The article reports on the development of the Met Office Unified Model's (MetUM) Global Atmosphere 3.0 (GA3.0) and Global Land 3.0 (GL3.0) configurations in Europe. It notes that GA3.0 and GL3.0 is used for climate research and weather predictions. It also tackles the Global Atmosphere development process and the absorption of the shortwave (SW) radiation from the Sun.

Background and Objective: Health care costs represent a substantial an increasing percentage of global expenditures. One key component is treatment of respiratory diseases, which account for one in twelve deaths in Europe. Computational simulations of lung airflow have potential to provide considerable cost reduction and improved outcomes. Such simulations require accurate in silico modeling of the lung airway. The geometry of the lung is extremely complex and for this reason very simple morphologies have primarily been used to date. The objective of this work is to develop an effective methodology for the creation of hybrid pulmonary geometries combining patient-specific models obtained from CT images and idealized pulmonary models, for the purpose of carrying out experimental and numerical studies on aerosol/particle transport and deposition in inhaled drug delivery., Methods: For the construction of the hybrid numerical model, lung images obtained from computed tomography were exported to the DICOM format to be treated with a commercial software to build the patient-specific part of the model. At the distal terminus of each airway of this portion of the model, an idealization of a single airway path is connected, extending to the sixteenth generation. Because these two parts have different endings, it is necessary to create an intermediate solid to link them together. Physically realistic treatment of truncated airway boundaries in the model was accomplished by mapping of the flow velocity distribution from corresponding conducting airway segments., Results: The model was verified using two sets of simulations, steady inspiration/expiration and transient simulation of forced spirometry. The results showed that the hybrid model is capable of providing a realistic description of air flow dynamics in the lung while substantially reducing computational costs relative to models of the full airway tree., Conclusions: The model development outlined here represents an important step toward computational simulation of lung dynamics for patient-specific applications. This article presents a synthesis of some of the more significant findings from two recent surveys on working conditions and national strategies for their improvement in the European Union in the 1990s. As patterns and organization of employment have changed in the past decade, the consequences for health and safety present new challenges for legislators, the social partners, the regulatory agencies, and the specialists. These challenges are only partially met in most European member states. Because of the continued deregulation of employment, reduced public expenditure, and reduced trade union presence, the operation of strategies to implement a common framework of E.U. legislation is limited and often incomplete. This issue must be confronted if systems for promoting the well-being of people at work in Europe are to keep up with the rapidly changing nature of the risks that they face.

This article outlines the legislative requirements for preventive services in health and safety in 13 European countries and considers the implementation and coverage of such services. The author identifies the predominant models of preventive services operating in the European Union, then assesses the influence of the E.U. Framework Directive 89/391 on the development and integration of preventive services and the role of workers in their organization and accountability. Significant differences exist in the extent and functions of preventive services in European countries, including differences in coverage between southern and northern European countries, different degrees to which employees in small enterprises and large enterprises are covered by preventive services, and overall differences in legislative approach.

Nineteen European fertility centres participated in a controlled randomized trial aimed at comparing the effectiveness of five methods for the treatment of unexplained infertility. Each centre was invited to employ two of the five treatments being investigated, and the treatment allocated to individual patients was then decided by randomization. The treatments were superovulation alone, and superovulation together with one of the following procedures: intra-uterine insemination (IUI), intra-peritoneal insemination (IPI), gamete intra-Fallopian transfer (GIFT), in-vitro fertilization (IVF). All the patients admitted to the study had experienced greater than 36 months infertility prior to the start of the trial, and only patients less than 38 years of age were included in the investigation. Further, the study was confined to patients with normal Fallopian tubes, and where there was evidence of spontaneous ovulation. Yet another prerequisite for inclusion in the study was that the male partner was 'normal' as regards fertility. Due to unavoidable practical difficulties, the experimental design eventually obtained was severely unbalanced. Nevertheless, objective statistical comparisons were possible among the five treatments, using non-orthogonal analyses of variance. By the completion of the trial 444 patients had been treated in a total of 649 cycles. There was some statistical evidence that the pregnancy rate obtained from superovulation alone was inferior to that obtained by using superovulation together with one of the methods of assisted conception.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
