This article studies the importance of the loss of family ties and its symbolic burden in the narrative of homeless people in familistic societies. The family is the main reason why poverty does not directly lead to social exclusion in southern European countries. However, the economic crises of the last two decades have weakened the ability of the family to protect its members. The new forms of poverty that imply processes of individualized social exclusion that lead to homelessness in southern Europe can be understood as a consequence of the overload currently suffered by families in those countries due to the recent economic crises. The loss of family ties in this type of society is so stigmatizing that, even if the person is living on the street for structural reasons such as having been unemployed and having lost their home due to the effects of the recent economic crises and not receiving aid from social services, always reproduces a characteristic story of self-victimization and mourning for not having had a good family that has helped him in times of need. Background/aims: When facial trauma involves elderly patients, the possible presence of frailty and comorbidities in victims of trauma may worsen the posttraumatic symptoms and decrease quality of life. The aim of this multicenter study was to assess the quality of life following surgical or non-operative management of maxillofacial trauma in elderly patients. Materials and methods: This cohort study was based on the administration of validated self-administered questionnaires to all the geriatric patients (70 years or more) with facial fractures from the involved maxillofacial surgical units across Europe, since 1st January 2019 to 31st June 2019. The following questionnaires were administered: SF36 questionnaire; the VFQ-25 questionnaire; the Oral Health Impact Profile – 14 (OHIP14). Outcome variables were VFQ-25 and OHIP-14 results. Results: A total of 37 patients (14 male and 23 female patients) met the inclusion criteria and were included in the study. Elderly patients had an improvement in almost all the categories examined by the SF-36 questionnaire 6 months after trauma, with the only exception of a worsening as for role limitations due to physical health. An improvement was observed in almost all the categories at SF-36 test. A worsening of scores of OHIP-14 for all the considered dimensions in the whole study population was observed too. Conclusions: Elderly patients following facial trauma experience significant emotional, social, and functional disturbances. We observed that emotional problems, energy/fatigue, social functioning, and generally social limitations played a great role in the decrease of QoL in elderly patients following maxillofacial trauma. The objective of the present study was to assess the demographic variables, causes, and patterns of edentulous atrophic fractures of the mandible managed at several European departments of oral and maxillofacial surgery. The results of this multicenter collaboration over a 10-year period are presented. The data of all patients with fractures of the atrophic edentulous mandible from the involved maxillofacial surgical units across Europe between January 1, 2008, and December 31, 2017 were recorded: gender; age; voluptuary habits; comorbidities; etiology; fracture sites; synchronous body injuries; atrophy of the mandible according to Luhr classification; eventual type of treatment; timing of the eventual surgery; length of hospital stay. A total of 197 patients (86 male and 111 female patients) with 285 mandibular fractures were included in the study. Mean age of the study population was 75 years. Statistically significant associations were found between Luhr classes I – II and condylar fractures on one hand (p <.0005), and between Luhr class III and body and parasymphyseal fractures on the other hand (p <.05). Finally, 135 patients underwent open reduction and internal fixation, 56 patients did not undergo any intervention, and 6 patients underwent closed reduction. No statistically significant association was observed between treatment, timing of treatment, comorbidities, and concomitant injuries. The management of edentulous atrophic mandibular fractures remains challenging. Treatment decisions should continue to be based on the clinician's previous experience and on the degree of bone resorption in edentulous mandible in relation to fracture subsites. Abstract: An Air Transport System has become an indispensable part of Europeʼs economic infrastructure. The Commercial Aeronautics Sector is well aware that it has to find an acceptable balance between the constant fierce competitive pressures upon it and the publicʼs expectations of cheaper fares but reduced environmental impact including community noise around airports and global warming. In order to achieve such a balance in the future, a strategy is required for competitive excellence dedicated to meeting societyʼs needs. The realization of this vision cannot be achieved without significant technology breakthroughs in the area of aerodynamics and other disciplines such as materials and structures. Improved aerodynamic designs and the introduction of new aerodynamic technologies should play not only a key role in improving aircraft performance but, also, contribute strongly to product cost and operability. Substantial R&T exploration and development require to be conducted in order to provide the required technologies. In this work, a review of those technologies which show a potential to deliver breakthrough improvements in the aerodynamic performance of the aircraft is shown. The focus of this report is on new aircraft configurations to reduce induced drag and noise, laminar and turbulent drag reduction technologies and flow control devices, which aims to improve the performance of the airplane under separated flow conditions of unsteady nature, and to reduce the complex high-lift devices. Most of these works have been exposed in previous KATnet conferences (Key Aerodynamic Technologies for Aircraft Performance Improvement), although a general overview of the current status of these technologies is included. This article reports the design, the breadboarding, and the validation of an ultrastable cryogenic sapphire oscillator operated in an autonomous cryocooler. The objective of this project was to demonstrate the feasibility of a frequency stability of 3×10-15 between 1 and 1000 s for the European Space Agency deep space stations. This represents the lowest fractional frequency instability ever achieved with cryocoolers. The preliminary results presented in this paper validate the design we adopted for the sapphire resonator, the cold source, and the oscillator loop. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The need to support radio science experiments and enhance navigation accuracy for the currently flying deep-space missions of the European Space Agency (ESA) has triggered the development of suitable tools in the agency's deep-space stations. This paper describes the modifications implemented in the ESA standard receiver, the Intermediate Frequency and Modem System (IFMS), for the above goals. These modifications were possible due to the highly flexible architecture of the IFMS. The European Space Agency (ESA) is today autonomously flying three interplanetary missions: Rosetta traveling to the comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko and the two orbiters Mars Express and Venus Express. The capability of supporting these and future deep-space missions is the consequence of a farsighted decision taken in 1996 to expand the ESA network of 15-m tracking antennas into the deep-space domain. The ambitious plan to provide around-the-clock coverage to all ESA interplanetary missions is almost completed: two deep-space antennas, located in New Norcia (Australia) and Cebreros (Spain), have been in operation since 2002 and 2005, respectively, while a third antenna is planned for 2011. This paper presents the two existing antennas starting from the underlying system requirements originated from the Rosetta mission, which was the most demanding in terms of required performance. The selected architecture is then described, followed by a detailed discussion about the critical performances that play a major role in deep-space support and the associated design issues. Abstract: The current magnetic confinement nuclear fusion power reactor concepts going beyond ITER are based on assumptions about the availability of materials with extreme mechanical, heat, and neutron load capacity. In Europe, the development of such structural and armour materials together with the necessary production, machining, and fabrication technologies is pursued within the EFDA long-term fusion materials programme. This paper reviews the progress of work within the programme in the area of tungsten and tungsten alloys. Results, conclusions, and future projections are summarized for each of the programme’s main subtopics, which are: (1) fabrication, (2) structural W materials, (3) W armour materials, and (4) materials science and modelling. It gives a detailed overview of the latest results on materials research, fabrication processes, joining options, high heat flux testing, plasticity studies, modelling, and validation experiments. Abstract: This paper shows a new continuous strain–stress map for Europe obtained from the direct inversion of earthquake focal mechanisms calculated from the centroid tensor method. A total of 1608 focal mechanisms have been selected with several quality criteria from different catalogues (CMT Harvard, ETH, Med-Net, I.G.N. and I.A.G.) from 1973 to the present day. Values for the maximum horizontal shortening direction and brittle strain–stress regime defined by the k′ ratio (e y/e z, horizontal maximum/vertical strain) have been calculated following in Europe and Pannonian Basin the slip model of tri-axial deformation. The individual results including Dey and the shape of the active brittle strain ellipsoid have been interpolated to a final 15′ regular grid taking into account the relationship between the tectonic horizontal strain–stress value and the vertical load. Both continuous strain regime and maximum horizontal shortening (Dey) maps show a good correlation with the primary tectonic forces generated along the plate boundaries, plate kinematics and also some local perturbations related with main crustal heterogeneities and topography, as well as significant spatial variations in integrated crustal strength.
