Further distortions occur depending on parents' categorization by income, occupation, or education. This paper addresses these issues using empirical data from Chile, France, and Malaysia. Objectives: Elevated total plasma homocysteine is a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and there is some evidence that omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) can modulate the effects of homocysteine-lowering B vitamins on AD related pathologies. Hence we investigated the relationship between total plasma homocysteine and cortical β-amyloid (Aβ) in older adults at risk of dementia. The role of erythrocyte membrane n-3 PUFAs (omega 3 index) on this relationship was also explored. Design: This is a cross-sectional study using data from the Multidomain Alzheimer Preventive Trial (MAPT); a randomised controlled trial. Setting: French community dwellers aged 70 or over reporting subjective memory complaints, but free from a diagnosis of clinical dementia. Participants: Individuals were from the MAPT trial (n = 177) with data on total plasma homocysteine at baseline and cortical Aβ load. Measurements: Cortical-to-cerebellar standard uptake value ratios were assessed using [18F] florbetapir positron emission tomography (PET). Total baseline plasma homocysteine was measured using an enzymatic cycling assay. Baseline omega 3 index was measured using gas chromatography. Cross-sectional associations were explored using adjusted multiple linear regression models. Results: We found that total baseline plasma homocysteine was not significantly associated with cortical Aβ as demonstrated using multiple linear regression models adjusted for age, sex, education, cognitive status, time interval between baseline and PET-scan, omega-3 index, MAPT group allocation and Apolipoprotein E ε4 status (B-coefficient -0.001, 95 % CI: -0.008,0.006, p = 0.838). Exploratory analysis showed that homocysteine was however significantly associated with cortical Aβ in subjects with low baseline omega-3 index (< 4.72 %) after adjustment for Apolipoprotein E ε4 status (B-coefficient 0.041, 95 % CI: 0.017,0.066, p = 0.005, n = 10), but not in subjects with a high baseline omega-3 index (B-coefficient -0.010, 95 % CI: -0.023,0.003, p = 0.132, n = 66). Conclusions: The role of n-3 PUFAs on the relationship between homocysteine and cerebral Aβ warrants further investigation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Objective: A germline and coding polymorphism (rs2230926) of TNFAIP3 (A20), a central gatekeeper of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kB) activation, was recently found associated with primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS)-associated lymphoma in a French cohort. We aimed to replicate this association.Patients and Methods: The rs2230926 polymorphism was genotyped in cases and controls of European ancestry from two independent cohorts from UK and France. Case control association tests were performed (Fisher's test) in the two cohorts, followed by a meta-analysis of the two cohorts.Results: The UK cohort included 308 controls and 590 patients with pSS including 31 with a history of lymphoma. The French cohort consisted of 448 controls and 589 patients with pSS including 47 with lymphoma. In both cohorts, the rs2230926 missense polymorphism was not associated with pSS. However, in the UK cohort, the rs2230926G variant was significantly associated with pSS-associated lymphoma (OR=2.74, 95% CI (1.07 to 7.03), p=0.0423, compared with patients with pSS without lymphoma, and OR=3.12, 95% CI (1.16 to 8.41), p=0.0314, compared with healthy controls) as observed in the French cohort. The meta-analysis of the two cohorts confirmed these results (OR=2.48, 95% CI (1.87 to 3.28) p=0.0037 and OR=2.60, 95% CI (1.91 to 3.53) p=0.0031, respectively).Conclusions: This study confirms the role of A20 impairment in pSS-associated lymphoma. Subtle germline abnormalities of genes leading to impaired control of NF-kB activation in B cells continuously stimulated by autoimmunity enhance the risk of lymphoma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chalk exposures in coastal cliff faces extend from Yorkshire to Devon in England and from Boulonnais to Normandy in France. The failure of chalk cliffs is a long-recognised hazard along parts of these coastlines; however, variation in the chalk's lithology, stratigraphy and physical properties coupled with changing topographic relief, means that the nature of the hazard is variable. This paper is concerned with cliff failures that may lead to chalk flow resulting in catastrophic flow slide or sturzstrom-like behaviour. The paper discusses the nature of chalk flows and how they relate to other types of flow-like sturzstroms. Recently published and unpublished work is used to unify simple mechanical index properties between the French and English coastal chalks. Some well-documented studies are then re-examined, using these results and in the light of new findings on sturzstroms to show how runout is controlled by chalk porosity. Finally, a series of physical model tests are described in which some of the controls on runout of the chalk are examined. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article examines the audiovisual magazine television programs of the Institute for Audiovisual Communication (INA) and their implications in television (TV) broadcasting in France. These are "Hiéroglyphes" and "Juste en Image." These works reflect the shift from modernist to postmodernist practice in broadcasting. They raise issues about the discourse in French public service broadcasting, popular memory, cultural heritage and authorship. Their emphasis on image places these audiovisual magazine programs in the center of the postmodern gilt market.

This article reports on the wine-growing region of Chinon in the Loire Valley of France. Chinon's relative obscurity is discussed, and attributed in part to its use of the cabernet franc grape variety. The flavor characteristics of the wine are discussed, and its promotion by the French Renaissance writer Rabelais.
