The article presents information related to the correspondence and travel writing in the Barcelona, Spains newspaper "La Vanguardia" during the period, 1890-1900. The article also examines the broader function and possible impact that the writings of three of the newspaper's most emblematic artist-correspondents had on the construction of Barcelona in the imagination of its middle-class citizenry. As reported, the article written by these artist-correspondents have received marginal critical attention in the light of their possible social and cultural significance. It is also reported that it is France, and its capital, that figures most prominently as a point of reference for Catalan readers on the pages of the newspaper in the 1890s.
