This paper examines the intersectional origins of the Mouvement de libération des femmes (MLF) in France through analysis of one of its founding groups: Féminin, Masculin, Avenir (FMA). Complicating historiographical perceptions that the feminist revival of 1970 largely resulted from the revolutionary activity of May 1968 in France, this article argues that Women's Liberation also sprung from a transnational, multi‐issue activist network that predated the events of that year. FMA, though statistically insignificant in the vast arena of late‐1960s activism, boasted a disproportionately influential share of MLF activists who would go on to shape the principle theories of Women's Liberation in France. Their engagement with anti‐colonialism, Black liberation and Marxism facilitated their feminist activism, sharpened their theories of oppression and provided them with models of successful identity‐based social movements. FMA explored the intersections of race, class and gender before eventually abandoning these intersections in the name of 'women' as a class. This turn away from solidarity with anti‐racist and anti‐colonial movements in the name of feminism shaped the priorities of Women's Liberation for years to come. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Our starting-point is the idea that we are at a decisive moment in the history of memories of feminisms; an 'archival turn', to use Kate Eichhorn's expression. Our objectives are, to redefine the characteristics of this archival turn by analyzing examples of centers, and the projects of documentary and archival resource centers, in Spain and France in the 1990s and 2000s; second, to contextualized them regarding the evolution of archival concepts and practices, and third, to consider whether there is a dual paradoxical movement between institutionalization and community activism. Methodology: To test our starting hypothesis, we review the literature applying a strongly interdisciplinary approach: feminist and gender studies, archival studies, French Theory, and cultural studies. We base ourselves on case studies in Spain and France in order to make relevant comparisons. Results: The first observation we should make is that there is a continuity between the second and third feminist waves in relation to the issue of archives. The second is that there is a turn in the world of archives, but with original features: between reactivation and intensification, between institutionalization and autonomy, these feminist archival activisms have to do with both majority and minority feminisms. Exploring archives belongs more than ever to the repertoire of feminist actions. The third observation is the existence of communities that are heavily supported by feminist archival initiatives. Although Luc Ferry contrasted eco-feminism with the feminism of Simone de Beauvoir, the concept was coined by one of her close friends, Françoise d’Eaubonne, who, admittedly, is not well known. This is why the author presents an outline of her thinking and her early feminism and how the latter came to be combined with environmentalism to result in a theory which is as much eco-feminist as it is anarcha-feminist. Using popular feminist journalism as a source, this article explores the historical consciousness of 'second wave' French- and English-Canadian feminism. Eighteen newspapers from across the country are examined, from their first appearance in 1969 to the mid-1980s; their coverage of historical people and issues, their understanding of what is historically significant, and their efforts to reconstruct a feminist history are all interrogated. While this cohort of feminists is often characterized as white, middle class, and liberal in political orientation, feminist journalism suggested a more complex picture, in which class relations and imperialism figured prominently. The article suggests that we need to rethink taken-for-granted paradigms, including the tendency to collapse identity and politics into a unitary category. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Working within the framework of Mannheim's analysis of the notion of generations, this article takes two women trailblazers, Hubertine Auclert (1848–1914) and Christine Ockrent (1944–), and situates them within their own generations, but also illustrates the confluence and contradictions as their lives and work are examined across the divide of approximately a century. It proceeds to evaluate their careers as journalists alongside their engagement, or non-engagement, with the feminist Zeitgeist of their respective times, first in the context of citizenship, secondly in relation to their respective career aspirations and ‘rayonnement’, and thirdly with regard to the implication of their location in societal and gender terms. It concludes by contrasting the two women's media impact and approach to feminism: whereas Auclert was a pioneer using her newspaperLa Citoyenneas a vehicle for suffragist feminism, Ockrent has been an iconic figure for the advancement of a new generation of women multi-media journalists. The period 1880–1930 saw women composers achieve unprecedented prominence as composers of large-scale works. This success coincided with the first wave of feminist movements in England, France and Germany. This article views the junctions where these two groups of women met through the vehicle of the feminist press, documenting the tensions and misunderstandings that occurred between emerging women composers attempting to be taken seriously as creative entities and feminists seeking to improve the political, social and professional lot of women. The pervasive aesthetic of male musical genius remained unquestioned by many feminists in spite of examples of female creative brilliance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While the French feminist movements campaigning to obtain the right to vote between the 1870s and the 1930s are well known, the struggles for women's access to higher education and professional work have not yet been studied in depth. Although the French Third Republic (1871-1940) claimed to adhere to the principles of equality, meritocracy and the 'free competition of talents', which translated concretely into the creation of a system of scholarships, competitions and professional degrees which provided access to many of the professional careers, these doors remained largely closed to the first women attempting to enter them. The controversies that this situation provoked are the subject of this article, which draws from professional, parliamentary, press and activist sources. More broadly, through examining this particular series of controversies, the article aims to give an account of the mechanisms and arguments that are generally used to make such discriminations publicly acceptable within institutional spaces that are formally governed by the principle of equal access.
