Between c.1845 and 1900 the firm of Alfred Marne in Tours produced enormous amounts of books for youngsters in paper case bindings covered with embossed coloured paper, which often had a lithograph pasted on the upper board. Extant copies of the same edition show different combinations of paper and lithographs. They prove that Mame had his books bound in batches, meant for various kinds of clients. Using the case of the anonymous publications of mystical theological treatises by French noblewoman Jeanne Marie Bouvier de la Motte-Guyon in the late 17th and early 18th century, the article discusses the politics of publishing controversial religious texts and the circulation of non-written knowledge in France and Europe in the early modern period. It argues that the role of Madame Guyon in the debate about Quietism and her persecution by Church authorities in the 1690s illustrate that knowledge about an author depended on both printed and oral means of transmission. It also considers the relevance of Guyon's sex and gender in the controversy.

A recent discovery of a second example of a previously unknown London printer's device (an earlier version of McKerrow 57 used in Paris c. 1512) provides an opportunity to discuss the activity of Paris printers in providing specialist titles for the London market. It is noted that literary piracy became such a problem in France that Emperor Napoleon III initiated a series of reforms to literary property law. In 1866 a law was passed to protect copyrights held by authors for 50 years after the author's death. In the first half of the 19th century, it is noted that authors were typically not paid well by publishers, but that they were free to move freely between publishers.
