We present BreizhCrops, a novel benchmark dataset for the supervised classification of field crops from satellite time series. We aggregated label data and Sentinel-2 top-of-atmosphere as well as bottom-of-atmosphere time series in the region of Brittany (Breizh in local language), north-east France. We compare seven recently proposed deep neural networks along with a Random Forest baseline. The dataset, model (re-)implementations and pre-trained model weights are available at the associated GitHub repository (https://github.com/dl4sits/breizhcrops) that has been designed with applicability for practitioners in mind. We plan to maintain the repository with additional data and welcome contributions of novel methods to build a state-of-the-art benchmark on methods for crop type mapping. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In France, a national surveillance plan to monitor congenital Schmallenberg virus (SBV) outbreaks was set up in January 2012, and has shown that SBV had become widespread throughout the country since mid-2011. However, the number of SBV-infected farms cannot accurately be estimated through congenital SBV reporting alone. Therefore, GDS France (National Animal Health Farmers' Organization) conducted serological investigations in cattle and sheep holdings in several departments in spring 2012 to assess SBV exposure in 2011. A serological study was also conducted in the department of Saône-et-Loire (southern Burgundy) to establish an accurate local overview of circulation of virus in 2011 among cattle. The study was conducted following guidelines elaborated by the French Platform for animal health surveillance. Results indicated differences in within-herd seroprevalence between cattle herds and sheep herds in departments where outbreaks of congenital SBV were reported in early 2012 and a great heterogeneity in seroprevalence between areas (even between areas geographically close to each other). In departments which had been severely affected in early 2012, the overall impact of SBV infection in cattle herds during the 2012-2013 calving season will probably be low. On the other hand, given the low proportion of immunised ewes in sheep SBV outbreaks, sheep flocks which were already affected in early 2012 may once again face congenital cases of SBV [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new influenza virus, genus D, isolated in US pigs and cattle, has also been circulating in cattle in France. It was first identified there in 2011, and an increase was detected in 2014. The virus genome in France is 94%-99% identical to its US counterpart, which suggests intercontinental spillover.

Background: The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility of hemodynamic monitoring by bioreactance during the air evacuation of war casualties., Methods: From June 2011 to January 2012, the French Air Force used a noninvasive bioreactance monitor during the aeromedical evacuation of patients with severe battle injury. Patients were continuously monitored from takeoff (baseline) until arrival. Cardiac index, quality, and viability of signal and fluctuations in values were assessed during the entire flight., Results: Eighteen patients were included, and monitoring was possible for 16 patients. The implementation of the monitoring was found to be straightforward for both doctors and paramedics, and we observed no loss of signal or interference during the flights. Cardiac index decreased significantly during the takeoff and returned to baseline value after the 50th minute of flight., Conclusion: The application of noninvasive bioreactance hemodynamic monitoring is feasible and pertinent in the specific environment of aeromedical evacuation. This monitoring can be particularly useful during the strategic evacuation of patients with severe injury from field hospital to tertiary centers., Level of Evidence: Care management study, level V.

We report a case of scorpion envenomation occurring during combat in Tagab district, province of Kapisa, Afghanistan. A French soldier was stung by a yellow scorpion (suspected Androctonus australis) and sustained systemic envenomation with hemodynamic and neurological manifestations. We discuss the clinical features, prevention, and management of a scorpion sting.

Purpose: Evaluate heart failure management in a Military Hospital in 2005., Methods: Retrospective audit of 46 case records of patients hospitalised with heart failure within the framework of an accreditation procedure., Results: The left ventricular ejection fraction was evaluated in 85% of cases during the reference hospital stay. Systolic heart failure was detected in 63% of cases. At least one NT-proBNP assay was performed for each patient. A global assessment was systematically performed, except for the mini mental state examination in patients aged over 75 years who represented 80% of patients. Initial therapeutic education was provided for 50% of systolic heart failure patients. Prescription rates in systolic heart failure were 76% for angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, 7% for angiotensin receptor antagonists; 84% for at least one medicinal product in the above 2 classes; 68% for beta-blockers and 32% for spironolactone. A hospital discharge report was available for 93% of the patients. Elective re-admissions to hospital for uptitration of treatment concerned 10% of systolic heart failure patients. Emergency hospital re-admissions after a cardiovascular event (usually decompensation), concerned 35% of patients, after an average duration of one year of follow-up. These latter re-admissions, often repeated, led to 4% of additional hospital deaths. The initial hospital mortality rate was 13%., Conclusion: Therapeutic patient education is under development. Medication may still be optimised, both qualitatively and quantitatively. Surveillance is planned with a yearly audit.
