Abstract

The article looks into the clerical leadership and Catholic violence in France and the Netherlands from 1560 to 1585. A comparison between France and the Netherlands suggests that the engagement of Catholic lay people resulted to the admission that their input was instrumental to the survival of the Church. The author argues that Catholic violence in France was not an instinctive response in defense of traditional religion.
