Background: The treatment of patients with headache represents an important part of a neurologist's activity. It requires sufficient training for neurology residents. In France, residents in neurology can complete this training by attending specialized consultations or by participating in a postgraduate training program called "Diplôme Inter‐Universitaire Migraine et Céphalées" (DIUMC). Objective: The objective of this cross‐sectional study was to investigate the French residents' knowledge in headache medicine and the impact of different types of training in headache medicine that are available in France. Methods: An anonymous survey was carried out among 548 French residents in neurology. Results: The questionnaires of 121 residents (22.1%) were analyzed. Among them, 54.5% (66/121) had no complementary training apart from the internship (Group 1), 21.5% (26/121) had attended only specialized consultations (Group 2), and 24% (29/121) had participated in the DIUMC (Group 3). There was no difference between all groups regarding the knowledge of the prevalence of primary or chronic headaches. There was almost no difference between the groups in the management of episodic migraine. In contrast, the management of tension‐type headache and chronic headache was better known by residents of Group 3 than residents of Group 1. In these two diseases, residents of Group 3 offered prophylactic treatment more often. Almost 29% of the residents (35/121) had read the French guidelines for the diagnosis and management of migraine. In Group 3, residents had read them significantly more often (1.6% in Group 1, 38.5% in Group 2 and 62.1% in Group 3, p < 0.001). Conclusion: This study shows the lack of knowledge among French neurology residents regarding headache medicine. It highlights the interest of specific training programs that could improve the practical and theoretical knowledge of future neurologists. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent social disturbance in France shows that a carbon tax has not been persuasively advocated. But it should be clear that unchanged laissez-faire economics will produce disaster in light of the facts about global heating and climate change. Abstract: The trace metal (TM) content in arable soils has been monitored across a region of France characterised by a large proportion of calcareous soils. Within this particular geological context, the objectives were to first determine the natural levels of trace metals in the soils and secondly, to assess which sites were significantly contaminated. Because no universal contamination assessment method is currently available, four different methods were applied and compared in order to facilitate the best diagnosis of contamination. First, the TM geochemical background was determined by using basic descriptive statistics and linear regression models calculated with semi-conservative major elements as predictors. The natural concentrations of trace metals varied greatly due to the high soil heterogeneity encountered on the regional scale and were more-or-less accurately modelled according to the considered TM. Second, the basic descriptive statistics and the linear regression methods were then compared with the enrichment factor (EF) method and multivariate analysis (PCA), in order to evaluate whether the concentrations measured in soils were abnormally high or not. The advantages and disadvantages of each method were discussed and their results used to identify the most probable contamination cases, the influence of the soils characteristics, as well as the agricultural land cover. The basic descriptive method was good as a first and easy approach to describe the TM ambient concentrations, but may misinterpret the natural anomalies as contaminations. Based on geochemical associations, the linear regression method provided more realistic results even if the relationships between major and trace metals were not significant for the most mobile TM. The EF method was useful to identify high point source contaminations, but it was not suitable when considering a large dataset of low TM concentrations. Finally, the PCA method was a good preliminary tool for the description of the global TM concentrations in a studied area, but it could only give indication on the highest contaminated points. By comparing the results of the different methods in the studied region, we estimated that 24% of the arable soils were contaminated by at least one trace metal, mainly Cu in vineyards/orchards and Cd, Pb and/or Zn in grazing lands. In addition, the calcareous soils exhibited globally higher natural and anthropogenic TM concentrations than non-calcareous soils, probably because of the lower TM mobility at alkaline pH. Summary: Aims: In France, there are currently more that 15 million members of sports clubs or associations who require a medical certificate confirming that they have no medical conditions that would prevent them from practicing their chosen sport. This creates a large amount of work for the general practitioners in France who are required to carry out the examinations and issue these certificates. From literature searches, it is evident that there is no real consensus on how the examination should be carried out except in the case of professional or high-level sports players. It is therefore up to each individual doctor to decide how to proceed. Methods: In order to gain further insight into this question, a questionnaire was sent to general practitioners. The intention was to know the practice of general practitioners and find solutions to make this examination easier. Results: The results of this survey show that during the examination, general practitioners ask the patient a number of routine questions regarding their general state of health and carry out a complete clinical examination. However, there are evidently some discrepancies in the search of the past history, in how the legislation is followed and which additional examinations are performed. The survey also revealed that most general practitioners think that it would be helpful if there were a well-defined protocol for this examination and that this would also result in a reduction in expenditure. The development of standardized procedures for data collection (SFMES form, patient''s questionnaire) and a well-defined protocol for the examination, approved by the Ministry of Sport, would be a considerable help in facilitating the work of general practitioners. Recent studies have shown that extensive chlorination of natural organic matter significantly affects chlorine (Cl) residence time in soils. This natural biogeochemical process must be considered when developing the conceptual models used as the basis for safety assessments regarding the potential health impacts of 36-chlorine released from present and planned radioactive waste disposal facilities. In this study, we surveyed 51 French forested areas to determine the variability in chlorine speciation and storage in soils. Concentrations of total chlorine (Cltot) and organic chlorine (Clorg) were determined in litterfall, forest floor and mineral soil samples. Clorg constituted 11-100% of Cltot, with the highest concentrations being found in the humus layer (34-689 mg Clorg kg-1). In terms of areal storage (53 - 400 kg Clorg ha-1) the mineral soil dominated due to its greater thickness (40 cm). Clorg concentrations and estimated retention of organochlorine in the humus layer were correlated with Cl input, total Cl concentration, organic carbon content, soil pH and the dominant tree species. Clorg concentration in mineral soil was not significantly influenced by the studied environmental factors, however increasing Cl:C ratios with depth could indicate selective preservation of chlorinated organic molecules. Litterfall contributions of Cl were significant but generally minor compared to other fluxes and stocks. Assuming steady-state conditions, known annual wet deposition and measured inventories in soil, the theoretical average residence time calculated for total chlorine (inorganic (Clin) and organic) was 5-fold higher than that estimated for Clin alone. In France, the interest in Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) prior to landfilling is actually growing. In the absence of acceptance criteria for the waste to be landfilled, an alternative to the intensive, high-technology MBT can only find its place in the French context if it shows substantial benefits from an environmental, economic or operational point of view. This paper presents an experiment of low-cost MBT of size reduced MSW without material splitting. The performance of an experimental, pilot-scale mechanical and biological treatment process has been studied on 37.5Mg of raw municipal solid waste. The mechanical process has been kept simple with only coarse shredding and no material recovery. The biological treatment, which was a low-cost forced aeration process, was monitored for 25 weeks. The biogas production potential of the waste was reduced by 90% to . The initial AT4 index of decreased to . After 25 weeks of aerobic treatment, the dry mass loss reached 37%, while the mass of waste going to landfill was reduced by 28%. The average performances of the process were explained by the biological process itself, which was not optimal, and also by the characteristics of the input waste. The high particle size of the treated waste and the high content of slowly biodegradable matter (such as paper and cardboard) may both be significant drawbacks for the biological stabilisation of waste. Due to its short-lived progeny, including gaseous radon isotopes that can be inhaled and its significant transfer into vegetation, radium poses a substantial concern in radiation risk assessment. Although the transfer of Ra from soil to plants has been previously documented, the distribution and speciation of radium within the plant tissues, particularly within trees, remain unclear. The temporal dimension of Ra transfer is also poorly known. Therefore, the transfer of radium and others alkaline earth cations in beech trees was investigated through the analysis of fine (<2 mm) roots and leaves corresponding to tree organs with a life cycle limited to one season. This study was conducted at the experimental Montiers (INRAE-Andra site, France) and Strengbach watershed (OHGE site, France) beech-forested site. The activity of 226Ra and the isotopic ratio (228Ra/226Ra) were measured in roots and leaves using gamma spectrometry. Additionally, the concentration of alkaline earth cations (Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba) was measured, to better constraint the mechanism of alkaline earth cation transfer through the xylem. The retention of these cations within the trees increases with the mass of the element, following the order Mg < Ca < Sr ≈ Ba < Ra, i.e.: light alkaline earth cations are more efficiently transferred from roots to leaves than heavy one. Our results suggest that these cations maintain their hydration shell during their ascent in stems and a low pH ion-exchange process rather than a complexation process with carboxylic group occurs. The decay of the (228Ra/226Ra) isotopic ratio over time during transfer within the trees allows us to quantify the slow Ra translocation from roots to the leaves, ranging from 1 to more than 16 years. This duration increases with the age of the trees. Hence, radioactive decay of Ra provides particularly valuable timescale information that is usually difficult to assess for Ca or other alkaline earth cations. Cadmium-116 is one of the favorable candidates for neutrinoless double-beta decay ( 0 ν β β ) searches from both theoretical and experimental points of view, in particular thanks to the high energy of the decay (2813.49 keV), the possibility of the industrial enrichment in 116 Cd and its use in the well-established production of cadmium tungstate crystal scintillators. In this work, we present low-temperature tests of two 0.6 kg 116 CdWO 4 crystals enriched in 116 Cd to 82 % as scintillating bolometers. These detectors were operated underground, with one at the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (LSM) in France and the second at the Laboratorio Subterraneo de Canfranc (LSC) in Spain. The two crystals are coupled to bolometric Ge light detectors in order to register the scintillation light. The double readout of heat and scintillation enables reduction in the background in the region of interest by discriminating between different populations of particles. The main goal of these tests is the study of the crystals' radiopurity and the detectors' performance. The achieved results are extremely promising, in particular, the detectors demonstrate a high energy resolution (11–16 keV FWHM at 2615 keV) and a high-efficiency discrimination of the alpha background ( ∼ 20 σ ). These results, achieved for the first time with large mass enriched 116 CdWO 4 crystals, demonstrate prospects of the bolometric technology for high-sensitivity searches of 116 Cd 0 ν β β decay. Abstract: A 46g BGO (Bi4Ge3O12) scintillating bolometer has been tested at 20mK as a prototype for dark matter direct detection in the frame of the ROSEBUD (Rare Objects SEarch with Bolometers UndergrounD) collaboration. The bolometer has been operated first in Orsay and then in an ultra-low background environment at the Canfranc Underground Laboratory. We analyze its response both in heat and light, and its particle discrimination capability. Light yield under γ-ray excitation at several energies (from 88.0 to 1633.3keV) and the relative light output for different particles (β/γ, α and neutrons) have been estimated. The analysis focuses on the discrimination of nuclear recoils, like those produced by hypothetical weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), against electron recoils, produced by β/γ radioactive background.
