This article analyses Algerian cartoonist Ali Dilem's drawings from the first years of the décennie noire and contrasts them with his productions from the early months of 2019, when the Algerian demonstrators of the hirak ousted President Bouteflika. Dilem's career – spanning over 30 years – has made him a staple of Algerian and European news, whether in newspapers or on TV. Both popular and prolific, Dilem produces cartoons that illustrate what I call 'comic memory', a recording and remembering of the past through humour. A diachronic analysis of this large corpus of drawings sheds light on the social and subversive potentials of humour, but most importantly allows for a discussion of its mechanisms over time. Through a careful reading of Dilem's sardonic cartoons and their contexts of production, I show his work offers both a comic outlet unifying readers in a community of laughter, and a stern cultural commentary on how Algerians consider their history. In particular this article addresses two central motifs of Dilem's work, on the one hand Algerians' relationship to France, on the other hand the political pressures exerted on journalistic work in Algeria. Through themes such as censorship, racism and subversion, I explain how humour is a valuable source for memory studies. In fact, Dilem's work participates in creating a comic archive that keeps track of the mentalités and sheds light on media politics, aesthetics and the poetics of humour. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The policies carried out by France and Catholic Church towards Catholicism in the Middle-East and in Algeria present many similarities, event if the contexts are differents. Indeed, in Orient, native Christian people exist for centuries, whereas in Algeria, Catholic people are, in the vast majority, Europeans arrived in the 19th century. In addition, in one case, the politic framework is due to the surrenders, in the other case, it is a French department (1848). What were the strategies of the State towards Catholicism in Algeria between 1830 and 2018 and what positions did the Church adopt regarding the State, wether colonial or national? It will be the occasion to examine the so specific links built between the Catholic Church and the State, French and Algerian, from 1830, year of the arrival of the conquerors, to 2018, year of the beatification of the nineteen Catholic martyrs of the so-called black decade. Any one who studies the policy of the French colonialism in Algeria will notice clearly how cruel it was, during about a century and a half, the impact of which is still observable. such are the mines which were planted all along the Algerian borders on Challe and Maurice lines had killed approximately 4762 persons and disabled 12425 others and the number would increase .Adding to that the calamity of the atomic experiences that caused many victims. Thus, the French authorities, should be aware of the responsibility they have against all those rough crimes they committed and any one who took part in those crimes is to be condemned in front of all the world. The trauma of the Algerian War and of decolonization in the 1950s and 1960s triggered a new awareness in France, which, building on the thought of Camus, Sartre and M. Merleau-Ponty emerging from the experience of World War II and the division between East and West, contributed to a questioning of humanist thought. The work of the French poet Jean Sénac, who was born and lived in Algeria after independence, and who was assassinated in 1973, bears witness to this profound crisis in humanism in a decisive moment in history, philosophy and poetry. The poems published by Camus from 1954 onwards, together with the unpublished tragedy Le Soleil interdit, written between 1954 and 1958, represent the collapse of the humanist dream to reconcile 'citizens of beauty' into an Algeria united by fraternity. This article looks at the reporting of horse racing in French colonial Algeria. Imperial societies purposefully inject bias into journalistic records of sporting contests. The manner in which an occupying power undertakes this sociocultural task provides a meaningful window into the study of the occupation it conducts.

This article deals with the issue of secularization in France through the framework of two events in French history: the law proposed by former French president Jacques Chirac to ban any religious signs in schools and the controversy surrounding the possibility of having a Koran teacher in Algerian schools in 1892. The author discusses two types of the French concept of "laïcité," assimilationist and pragmatic, that were prevalent in these debates.

Environmental conditions ultimately leading to blooms of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella/tamarense were investigated at two Mediterranean sites (Annaba Bay, Algeria and Thau lagoon, France). Three years were examined in details: 1992 (a pre-Alexandrium period), 2002 (a year with the first bloom in Annaba) and 2010 (a year with a major bloom in Annaba). Most conditions were similar, but ammonium concentrations were much higher in Annaba (up to 100μM) than in Thau (up to 10μM). First records of A. catenella/tamarense were in 1995 for Thau and 2002 for Annaba, and coincided with soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) decreasing below a concentration of about 1μM. No other environmental variable could be related to those blooms. Thus, it is likely that the large reductions in SRP at both sites led to phosphorus limitation of a certain number of phytoplankton species and favored the development of A. catenella/tamarense., (Copyright © 2013 Académie des sciences.
