Introduction: Therapeutic Patient Education (TPE) is one of the non-pharmacological management options proposed to patients with Alzheimer's disease and other cognitive disorders (AD2). It is supported by French health authorities and national plans to fight Alzheimer's disease but its implementation remains limited. Objectives: Our objectives were (i) to describe TPE programs proposed to AD2 patients in France, (ii) to report health care providers, patients and families' experience, (iii) specific difficulties encountered and solutions provided. Methods: We listed programs accepted by French regional health agencies, dedicated to AD2 patients with the experience of at least one complete educational process. We interviewed providers by phone. Results: Among the 49 programs accepted by French agencies, 30 met our criteria. These programs appeared extremely heterogeneous in their management, their territorial distribution and the clinical presentation of enrolled patients. Conducting a classic TPE pattern dealing with patients with cognitive disorders turned out to be challenging. Nevertheless, providers adjusted their educational plan and overcame barriers. Conclusion: This work highlights psychosocial impact and value of TPE on AD2 patients. Implementation is not simple, however, it brings new prospects to AD2 patients' management. Focus on coordination and harmonized practices between providers are essential keys to improvement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
