Terrestrial isopods (Oniscidea) are crustaceans that thrive in terrestrial environments. This study provides an overview of the major topics in terrestrial isopod research during the last 70 years in order to provide an example of publication practices in invertebrate zoology and to examine how basic research in this area is transferred to its applications. Co-citation analysis and bibliographic coupling based on citation data from the Web of Science Core Collection was used. Findings show that while research on terrestrial isopods expanded in applicative research prioritised by research policies, basic research continues to flourish. The most productive countries in the field include the major developed economies and several smaller nations. In the smaller countries, as well as in France and Italy, the bulk of woodlouse research is performed at a few institutions with traditions in this field. Some of the most influential works have been published in periodicals or monographs that are not indexed in Web of Science or Scopus and lack impact factors. Conference proceedings represent some of the most influential publications in the field. Our findings indicate that smaller and developing economies make significant contributions in invertebrate zoology if their research organisations can achieve continuity of research on a topic. Another conclusion is that journal metrics may be a misleading descriptor of the impact of studies and researchers in this field. Ultimately, these results identify several examples of how basic research in invertebrate zoology leads to applications with considerable socio-economic impact. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The characterization of microplastic (MP) contamination in marine species is increasing as concerns about environmental and food safety are more and more discussed. Here, we reported a quantitative and qualitative assessment of the contamination by anthropogenic particles (from visual sorting; AP) and MP (plastic-made) in the whole soft body or digestive tract of marine species. Four commercial species were studied, namely the Pacific oyster (Magallana gigas), the spiny spider crab (Maja sp.), the common sole (Solea solea) and seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax or punctatus). AP and MP uptake were studied over three to four seasons depending on the species. After tissues digestion, particles were extracted under a stereomicroscope and morphometric characteristics were reported. Then, polymers were identified by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. Seasonal variations were mainly described in the Pacific oyster as AP uptake was lower in autumn and MP uptake was higher in spring. These variations may be linked to the reproduction and growth cycles of this species. Moreover, seabass ingestion was lower in autumn compared to winter. Contamination in spider crabs and soles showed either weak or no seasonal trends, both quantitatively and qualitatively. Overall, AP contamination in all studied species ranged from 1.17 ± 1.89 AP.ind -1 (in sole) to 4.07 ± 6.69 AP.ind -1 (in seabass) while MP contamination ranged from 0.10 ± 0.37 MP.ind -1 (in sole) to 1.09 ± 3.06 MP.ind -1 (in spider crab). Fibers were mostly reported in all species (at least 77.7%), along with cellulosic polymers (at least 43.7%). AP and MP uptake were detected in all species and at almost all seasons, with the only exception of the common sole during autumn. Abstract: In Europe, the number of establishment of non-native species, especially from Ponto-Caspian area, has dramatically increased over the past decades and induced important changes in macroinvertebrate assemblages, mainly in large rivers. However, although many Ponto-Caspian species were established in adjacent countries, only two Ponto-Caspian amphipods were formally observed in French hydrosystems since 1996. To update our knowledge on the present distribution of the Ponto-Caspian species in France, we collected amphipods from 203 sites in the Rhine, Meuse and Seine River basins in 2008 and again in 2009. Thirteen amphipod species were found in the study area. Among them, four were first formally recorded in France (Dikerogammarus haemobaphes, Dikerogammarus bispinosus, Echinogammarus ischnus, and Echinogammarus trichiatus). Our study revealed three different corridors used by these species to arrive in France. We also observed a different pattern of colonization for each species, which might indicate some between-species differences in their preferences for environmental conditions. The snapshot of the early distributions of these recently established species may hence be used to study the invasion pattern in France in order to manage their potential impact in and outside France. The results of a 1-year long survey of trace metals concentrations (Al, Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Hg, Ni, Pb, Zn) measured in beach sand, limpets and, occasionally, in fish and shellfish from the North Cotentin area (France), where nuclear industries are implanted, are presented. The objective of these study was to provide useful data for the validation of models predicting the impact of these industries on the marine environment. Even if differences were noted between sites for various metals, the levels are consistent with existing data published for similar site and do not appear to give evidence of contamination by industrial sites. The occurrence and fate of alkylphenols in various matrices of the Seine River Estuary were studied. Nonylylphenols (NP) and nonylphenol polethoxylates (NPEs) were monitored in surface dissolved water, suspended particulate matter (SPM) and in a copepod, Eurytemora affinis from November 2002 to January 2004. NPs, nonylphenol mono and diethoxylates (NP1EO, NP2EO) and nonylphenol-ethoxy-acetic-acid (NP1EC) were detected and measured in all dissolved water and SPM samples whereas nonylphenoxy-acetic-acid (NP2EC) was only found sporadically in dissolved water samples. Seasonal variation of total concentrations of NPs and NPEs, ranging, respectively from 399 to 2214ngl−1 and from 405 to 9636ngg−1, were measured in the dissolved water and in the SPM. Significant decreases were observed in the water-column during the maximum biological activity periods in spring and autumn. Furthermore, increasing levels were observed in the SPM during the winter period. High concentrations of NP1EO and NP were detected in all copepod samples, ranging from 3423 to 6406ngg−1. In order to better understand the variable sensitivities of crustaceans to metals, we investigated the impact of cadmium exposure in 3 populations of Gammarus fossarum from different rivers of France. The first population lives in a Cd-contaminated river from a geochemical background, while the others inhabit Cd-free sites. Osmoregulation, a relevant biomarker to evaluate crustacean health following metal contamination, was used as a proxy to evaluate the intra- and inter-populationnal sensitivities to Cd. Specimens from each population were experimentally exposed to 9 μg Cd 2+ /L Cd for 7 days and hemolymph osmolality (HO) was then individually measured. In exposed populations, high inter-individual variations in HO values were noted, resulting in their separation into non-impacted and slightly or highly Cd-impacted (with lower HO) animals. In gills of impacted organisms, deep histopathological alterations and protein overexpression of Na + /K + -ATPase and V-H + -ATPase were observed through histology and immunolocalization, while non-impacted animals showed profiles comparable to controls. Moreover, the osmoregulatory processes in the population living in the Cd-contaminated site were impacted by acute Cd exposure in the laboratory as much as for one of the two populations originating from Cd-free sites. The observed changes did not reveal any obvious adaptive osmoregulatory phenomena at the population scale, but they may be due to differences in fitness between individuals and between populations in relation to the features of their respective environments, unrelated with the presence of the metal., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd.
