COVID-19 vaccines are one of the best tools to limit the spread of the virus. However, vaccine hesitancy is increasing worldwide, and France is one of the most hesitant countries. From the beginning of the COVID-19 vaccination campaign, health care workers (HCW) have been prioritized in the vaccination strategy but were also hesitant. This study was conducted to identify and understand the determinants of COVID-19 vaccination intention in the French context, with a view to promoting HCW vaccination. A qualitative study using individual semi-structured interviews of HCWs was carried out at the beginning of the vaccination campaign (January to April 2021) in a French university hospital. Interviews indicated that the vaccination intention of HCWs was influenced by confidence in the proposed vaccines, past experience with vaccines and disease, the opinions and vaccination status of others, and media handling of information related to COVID-19 vaccination. Improving HCW vaccination intention regarding COVID-19 vaccines could be achieved through the dissemination of clear, reassuring, scientific information. Information should be disseminated by HCWs and vaccination experts and adapted to local contexts. To improve the level of confidence and vaccination uptake through a compliance effect, it would be useful to promote positive COVID-19 vaccination experiences and increased rates of immunization. Background: COVID-19 vaccination is crucial to reduce the incidence of severe forms of the disease in the population. However, people who use drugs (PWUD) face structural and individual barriers to vaccination, and little is known about vaccination intention and factors associated with that intention among PWUD. This study aimed to estimate vaccination intention in PWUD and associated factors in the early stage of vaccination campaigns., Methods: We conducted cross-sectional study in France among PWUD, as part of the international EPIC program, a community-based research study coordinated by Coalition PLUS. It included 166 unvaccinated PWUD attending harm reduction centers. A questionnaire collected data on sociodemographic characteristics, COVID-19 related difficulties, and mental health, among other things. Multivariate logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with low vaccination intention., Results: Only 19% of participants reported strong intention to get vaccinated against COVID-19. Factors independently associated with low vaccination intention were younger age (aOR = 0.90, 95%CI = 0.85-0.95), lower education level (aOR = 2.67, 95% CI = 0.95-7.55), and unstable housing (aOR = 6.44, 95% CI = 1.59-40.34). The most-cited reasons for low intention were mistrust in COVID-19 vaccines (66.1%), fear of side effects (48.7%), and non-belief in vaccinations in general (25.2%)., Conclusions: This study highlights the need for targeted COVID-19 information and interventions to increase vaccine uptake in PWUD, especially those living in precarity. Community-based interventions and targeted government assistance could play a crucial role in addressing vaccine hesitancy in this population, not only for COVID-19 but for future epidemics., (© 2024. Background: Vaccination against pandemic influenza A/H1N1 is an effective strategy to mitigate the spread of the disease. While the vaccine is now available, social acceptance remains relatively uncertain in many societies. The purpose of this study was to examine the beliefs, attitudes and practices associated with the intention to get vaccinated against the A/H1N1 virus among the general population in France. Methods: A representative sample of 1001 individuals (stratified random recruitment procedure, ages 16–90 years) was interviewed by telephone. The questionnaire included a variety of items associated with socio-demographic characteristics, risk perceptions, illness perceptions, political attitudes and worldviews as well as intention to get vaccinated. Results: More than 6 out of 10 of the respondents indicated that they planned to get vaccinated when the vaccine becomes available. The same proportion of parents also reported the intention to vaccinate their children against the disease. In multiple regression analyses, socio-cognitive factors consistently predicting influenza A/H1N1 vaccination were: level of worry, risk perception and previous experience of vaccine against seasonal flu. Conclusions: The factors found to predict vaccination intention and their distribution are assumed to be a consequence of the fact that people perceive the risk of swine flu to be similar to that of seasonal flu. As a result, in the absence of an increase of the risk perception of pandemic influenza A/H1N1, a very low level of actual vaccination is forecasted. Behavioural change would require that the risks and consequences of pandemic influenza A/H1N1 be perceived as highly different from seasonal flu. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
