Supporters of university honors programs argue that these programs benefit the university and entire student body while critics argue that honors programs reproduce socioeconomic and racial privileges. In an attempt to address these issues, researchers used quantitative survey data to compare the background characteristics, behaviors, and attitudes of honors and non-honors students at a medium-sized public university in the Southeast. Findings indicate racial and gender differences between the two groups, but similarities exist in economic backgrounds. The findings also show that honors students differ significantly from their non-honors peers in academic and behavioral measures. The information in the study supports the argument that honors programs bring benefits to the entire educational system rather than simply creating a privileged class of students, and that honors programs are thus worthy of the financial resources that institutions commit to them.

The course withdrawal decision includes both monetary and time costs for the student. Institutional costs include the misallocation of scarce seats to noncompleting students. Understanding the course withdrawal decision process can aid advisors and administrators as they seek ways to improve retention and progression. This study uses 21,318 course outcomes from introductory business core courses for the period 2003 to 2013. Our results suggest a higher withdrawal probability for students with merit-based scholarships and with a previous history of withdrawals. Online courses and withdrawal-related policy changes are also important factors in the withdrawal decision. Individuals who are less likely to withdraw include those with a high GPA or SAT score, students with more experience, summer school attendees, and Black students. In addition, students in introductory economics or business law classes were less likely to withdraw than those taking introductory accounting courses. Variables such as need-based aid, gender, and age did not impact the course withdrawal decision.

This paper analyzes the economic impact that selected "look and feel" or aesthetic building restrictions have on housing prices and housing availability in Georgia counties. We model the median value of homes using ordinary least squares, and as a robustness check, we also use a partial least squares structural equations model. We also estimate a supply of housing, as measured by single family housing permits, using a negative binomial regression. We find that aesthetic building restrictions do not have a statistically significant impact on the value of single-family homes or their supply. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research on the academic ethic of Latino college students has not yet been conducted. In order to begin filling this gap in the literature, we surveyed Latino students at a state university to determine whether those who had an academic ethic in high school performed better in college. We also assessed the perceived helpfulness of a variety of factors (1st-year seminar, freshman orientation, parents, peers, high school teachers and guidance counselors, college professors, etc.) in students' experience transitioning from high school to college. This paper investigates gender differences in the academic ethic and academic achievement among college students. The authors used the survey data collected from students attending Georgia Southern University, a unit of the University System of Georgia and one of two regional universities in the state. Results from the analysis indicate that women are more likely to possess an academic ethic than men and that women also tend to have higher GPAs. Furthermore, regression analysis with GPA as the dependent variable revealed differences between men and women in terms of significant predictors. For women, active participation in student clubs or groups is positively associated with GPA. For men, employment is negatively related with GPA. The authors used Coleman's (1988) concept of social capital, Chodorow's (1978) psychoanalytic feminist theory, and Gilligan's (1982) theory of women's development as the methods for data analysis in an attempt to build a potential theoretical explanation for these findings and to guide future research.

This article attempts to answer two key questions regarding the contemporary nature of ethnic identity: (1) How strong is the ethnic identity among members of Irish organizations in UNITED States, Georgia? and (2) How does membership in Irish organizations contribute to the maintenance of ethnic identity? Age, frequency of attendance of religious services, importance of religion in forming/maintaining ethnic identity, importance of ethnic organizations for forming/maintaining ethnic identity, and importance of family in the formation of ethnic identity were all related to ethnic identity. Ethnic organizations, particularly those that have distinctively ethnic purposes, are an important part of ethnic social structure. The importance of ethnic organizations and particularly the importance of family as transmitters of ethnic identity were most significantly related to the strength of ethnic identity. Forty percent of survey respondents reported that ethnic organizations were very important in the formation and maintenance of their ethnic identity. Ethnicity is used as a basis for social networks and social rituals. Interviewees provided examples of the role that ethnic organizations played in their lives, the community, and in the maintenance of their ethnic identity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ethnicity is constructed among white European Americans in a variety of ways. This paper focuses on the interrelationships between religion and ethnicity among members of Irish organizations in Savannah, Georgia. The scholarly literature is mixed regarding the impact these concepts have on each other. The link between religion and ethnicity is variable depending on a variety of situational factors. Our research found that white Catholics in Savannah were often considered to be Irish, even if they were not Irish, and if they were Irish they were considered Catholic, even if they were not Catholic. While we found that the frequency of attendance of religious services and the importance of religion in forming/maintaining ethnic identity are significantly related to the strength of one's ethnic identity, the importance of family and membership in ethnic organizations are even more strongly related to the strength of one's ethnic identity. In 107 patients with coronary disease and severe left ventricular dysfunction, we examined the prognostic power of viability identified by dobutamine stress echocardiography. At a mean follow-up of 27 months, patients with viable myocardium who underwent revascularization had a significant survival advantage over all other patients (2-year survival 83.5% vs 57.2%, p = 0.0037).
