The new German Radiation Protection Act (StrlSchG) of 31 December 2018 established a reference value of 300 Bq m−3 for the annual average radon activity concentration in buildings with recreation and living rooms, as well as in workplaces. It is expected that the reference value will be exceeded in a vast number of buildings throughout Germany and that radon protection measures will become indispensable. A simple and inexpensive radon protection measure for existing buildings is ventilation. In the scope of a joint project, ventilation systems with zone control and heat recovery are to be extended by the control parameter radon activity concentration. A highly sensitive, miniaturized radon monitor will be developed for this purpose, which can be integrated wirelessly into ventilation systems. Radon measurements were carried out in 13 apartments of an unoccupied heated apartment block in Germany over a period of three weeks in the wintertime. High radon activity concentrations were found on all three floors. The maximum values were 14000 Bq m−3 on the first floor, 6000 Bq m−3 on the second floor, and 2000 Bq m−3 on the third floor. Ventilation experiments were carried out in an apartment with high radon activity concentration. Two decentralized ventilation systems with heat recovery were installed in each of the two opposite outside walls. The controlling device of the system was activated wirelessly depending on the radon activity concentration. The radon activity concentration was reduced from 8000 Bq m−3 to 800 Bq m−3 in a first experiment in the living room. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the past, woodborers like A. punctatum and X. rufovillosum were widespread in historic furniture, households, and building structures, but as they need a high wood moisture content and central heating and climate control have become common today their occurrence is rare and often limited to open-air museums, rural museums, and historic buildings. In this paper, we report on the spread and transportation of different wood-boring beetles with wooden pallets, wooden transport boxes used for art transportation, and also the rising problem of different Lyctus species (powder post beetles) in new wood used in museums. Not only the native Lyctus linearis but also the introduced L. brunneus, L. cavicollis, and L. africanus can be found in transport boxes (nine cases in Germany between 2003 and 2015), infestations of new picture frames (three cases in Austria between 2010 and 2015), and new wood sold to carpenters in museum and conservation studios (used for new stretcher and picture frames, two cases in Austria). In some cases (two in Germany) a newly-laid parquet floor was infested by powder post beetles. The house longhorn beetle (H. bajulus), the furniture beetle (A. punctatum), and the Anobiid Oligomerus ptilinoides were all found infesting wooden pallets inside museum stores (five cases in Austria). New wooden pallets and transport boxes are treated once with heat after production, but our examples show that infestation and transportation of wood pests are still possible and are a new challenge for integrated pest management (IPM) in the future. We examine and discuss the materials used to transport art and possible measures to combat and prevent pests (plastic pallets or the use of other wood types). Consumption of domestic heating energy (space and water heating combined) in Germany has been falling in recent years. Official figures indicate it fell by 17 % in 2000-2011, from 669 to 564 TWh (temperature adjusted), while the population reduced by 2 % and the number of occupied dwellings increased by 3.4 %. German policy has strongly promoted deep thermal retrofits through regulation, information campaigns and subsidised loans. An important question is what portion of the reductions are due to progressive energy efficiency upgrade policy and what are due to other, non-technical factors such as demographic and behaviour change. We use national statistics and existing empirical studies to disaggregate the contribution of energy-efficiency improvements and nontechnical factors to the reduction in consumption. Our analysis suggests that around 20 % of the reductions are likely to be due to thermal retrofits of existing dwellings (insulation and new windows), 31 % due to boiler or heating system replacements, 1 % due to replacement of old dwellings with new, energy-efficient buildings, while some 45-50 % of the savings cannot be explained by these technical improvements. Most of these reductions appear to have occurred in non-upgraded, non-new dwellings. Although we do not know what caused these reductions, the finding is robust to very wide inaccuracies in figures for savings through technical improvements in buildings' energy efficiency. More research is needed to explore the extent to which this implies increasing fuel poverty, increasing skills and motivation among non-poor households to heat more economically, or the effects of demographic and lifestyle changes. Hygrothermal assessment is essential to the production of healthy and energy efficient buildings. This has given rise to the demand for the development of a hygrothermal laboratory, as input data to hygrothermal modeling tools can only be sourced and validated through appropriate empirical measurements in a laboratory. These data are then used to quantify a building's dynamic characteristic moisture transport vis-a-vis a much more comprehensive energy performance analysis through simulation. This paper discusses the methods used to establish Australia's first hygrothermal laboratory for testing the water vapor resistivity properties of construction materials. The approach included establishing a climatically controlled hygrothermal test room with an automatic integrated system which controls heating, cooling, humidifying, and de-humidifying as required. The data acquisition for this hygrothermal test room operates with the installation of environmental sensors connected to specific and responsive programming codes. The room was successfully controlled to deliver a relative humidity of 50% with ±1%RH deviation and at 23 °C temperature with ±1 °C fluctuation during the testing of the water vapor diffusion properties of a pliable membrane common in Australian residential construction. To validate the potential of this testing facility, an independent measurement was also conducted at the Fraunhofer Institute of Building Physics laboratory (IBP) Holzkirchen, Germany for the diffusion properties of the same pliable membrane. The inter-laboratory testing results were subjected to statistical analysis of variance, this indicates that there is no significant difference between the result obtained in both laboratories. In conclusion, this paper demonstrates that a low-cost hygrothermally controlled test room can successfully replace the more expensive climatic chamber. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Demand response has been noted as a major element of future smart energy systems. However, there is still a lack of knowledge about the demand response actions in different conditions—including climate, dynamic energy price, and building types. This study examines energy and cost saving potential of the rule-based demand response in district heating network, in three different building types, in Germany and Finland. The studied building types are apartment buildings, cultural centers, and office buildings. The real-time pricing-based demand response is applied to space heating under the climate conditions of Helsinki, Finland and Hamburg, Germany. Moreover, the typical synthetic dynamic price data, which are based on both counties' district heating production structure, is applied separately for each countries' cases. Simulations of this study are conducted with validated simulation tool IDA ICE. The results present that the demand response can provide energy and cost savings around 0.5–7.7% and 0.7–8.1% respectively, depending on the building type and country. The results indicate that marginal value of the control signal, climate conditions, and the dynamic price of the district heating have effect on the demand response saving potential.
