In the context of phosphorus (P) exhaustion and low P use efficiency (PUE) in crop production, a field trial was designed on a low-P soil in southwestern Germany in 2020 and 2021 to investigate the effects of P fertilizer type and liming on maize growth and P uptake and PUE. The experimental factors were (i) two P fertilizer types, rock phosphate (RP) and diammonium phosphate (DAP); (ii) lime application, lime and no lime; and (iii) two maize cultivars. The results showed that RP resulted in a lower leaf area index and light interception compared with DAP, a 33% lower silage yield, and a 29% lower P content at harvest. The PUE of RP was 18%, which was 37% lower than DAP. Soil liming reduced shoot biomass and led to 35% less shoot P content at the six-leaf stage. The maize cultivar Stabil expressed higher yielding and P acquisition characteristics. In conclusion, DAP cannot be replaced by placed RP, regardless of the lime application in silage maize production in this study. Detailed knowledge of a soil's lime requirement (LR) is a prerequisite for a demand-based lime fertilization to achieve the optimum soil pH and thus sustainably increasing soil fertility and crop yields. LR can be directly determined by the base neutralizing capacity (BNC) obtained by soil-base titration. For a site-specific soil acidity management, detailed information on the within-field variation of BNC is required. However, soil-base titrations for BNC determination are too laborious to be extensively applied in routine soil testing. In contrast, visible and near-infrared spectroscopy (visNIRS) is a time and cost-effective alternative that can analyze several soil characteristics within a single spectrum. VisNIRS was tested in the laboratory on 170 air-dried and sieved soil samples of nine agricultural fields of a quaternary landscape in North-east Germany predicting the soil's BNC and the corresponding lime requirement (LRBNC) at a target pH of 6.5. Seven spectral pre-processing methods were tested including a new technique based on normalized differences (ND). Furthermore, six multivariate regression methods were conducted including a new method combining a forward stagewise subset selection algorithm with PLSR (FS-PLSR). The models were validated using an independent sample set. The best regression model for most target variables was FS-PLSR combined with the second Savitzky-Golay derivation as pre-processing method achieving R2s from 0.68 to 0.82. Finally, the performance of the direct prediction of LRBNC (R2 = 0.68) was compared with an indirect prediction that was calculated by the predicted BNC parameters. Forest liming is a management tool that has and continues to be used extensively across northern Europe to counteract acidification processes from anthropogenic sulfur and nitrogen (N) deposition. In this study, we quantified how liming affects soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks and attempt to disentangle the mechanisms responsible for the often contrasting processes that regulate net soil carbon (C) fluxes. Using a paired plot experimental design we compared SOC stocks in limed plots with adjacent unlimed control plots at 28 experimental sites to 60 cm soil depth in mature broadleaf and coniferous forests across Germany. Historical soil data from a subset of the paired experiment plots were analyzed to assess how SOC stocks in both control and limed plots changed between 1990 and 2019. Overall, we found that forest floor C stocks have been accumulating over time in the control plots. Liming however largely offset organic layer buildup in the L/O f layer, and forest floor C stocks remained unchanged over time in the limed plots. This, in turn, meant that nutrients remained mobile and were not bound in soil organic matter complexes. Results from the paired plot analysis showed that forest floor C stocks were significantly lower in limed plots than the control (- 34 %, - 8.4 ± 1.7 MgCha-1) but did not significantly affect SOC stocks in the mineral soil, when all sites are pooled together. In the forest floor layers, SOC stocks exhibited an exponential decrease with increasing pH, highlighting how lime-induced improvements in the biochemical environment stimulate organic matter (OM) decomposition. Nevertheless, for both forest floor and mineral soils, the magnitude and direction of the belowground C changes hinged directly on the inherent site characteristics, namely, forest type (conifer versus broadleaf), soil pH, soil texture, and the soil SOC stocks. On the other hand, SOC stock decreases were often offset by other processes that fostered C accumulation, such as improved forest productivity or increased carbon stabilization, which correspondingly translated to an overall variable response by SOC stocks, particularly in the mineral soil. Lastly, we measured soil carbon dioxide (CO2) and soil methane (CH4) flux immediately after a re-liming event at three of the experimental sites. Here, we found that (1) liming doubles CH4 uptake in the long-term; (2) soil organic matter mineralization processes respond quickly to liming, even though the duration and size of the CO2 flush varied between sites; and (3) lime-derived CO2 contributed very little to total CO2 emissions over the measurement period (determined using stable isotope approaches). Mid‐infrared spectroscopy (MIRS) has proven to be a cost‐effective, high throughput measurement technique for soil analysis. After multivariate calibration mid‐infrared spectra can be used to predict various soil properties, some of which are related to lime requirement (LR). The objective of this study was to test the performance of MIRS for recommending variable rate liming on typical Central European soils in view of precision agriculture applications. In Germany, LR of arable topsoils is commonly derived from the parameters organic matter content (SOM), clay content, and soil pH (CaCl2) as recommended by the Association of German Agricultural Analytical and Research Institutes (VDLUFA). We analysed a total of 458 samples from six locations across Germany, which all revealed large within‐field soil heterogeneity. Calcareous topsoils were observed at some positions of three locations (79 samples). To exclude such samples from LR determination, peak height at 2513 cm−1 of the MIR spectrum was used for identification. Spectra‐based identification was accurate for carbonate contents > 0.5%. Subsequent LR derivation (LRSPP) from MIRS‐PLSR predictions of SOM, clay, and pH (CaCl2) for non‐calcareous soil samples using the VDLUFA look‐up tables was successful for all locations (R2 = 0.54–0.82; RMSE = 857–1414 kg CaO ha−1). Alternatively, we tested direct LR prediction (LRDP) by MIRS‐PLSR and also achieved satisfactory performance (R2 = 0.52–0.77; RMSE = 811–1420 kg CaO ha−1; RPD = 1.44–2.08). Further improvement was achieved by refining the VDLUFA tables towards a stepless algorithm. It can be concluded that MIRS provides a promising approach for precise LR estimation on heterogeneous arable fields. • Liming has been recognized to be beneficial for soil physical properties. • The physical resilience of a soil is related to its structural stability. • It may take several years to develop a sustainable structure system. Liming is a well-established practice to ameliorate acidic soils worldwide. However, the role of liming in soil structure formation and its relation to the nitrogen cycling is only little explored. We hypothesized that improved physical and mechanical soil properties, which are directly linked to soil structure, lead to lower nitrogen losses in an agricultural system. Water holding capacity, total pore volume, bulk density, hydraulic conductivity, shear stress and pre-compression stress were quantified in the topsoil of three surveys located in Germany on different soil types: Eutric Gleyic Cambisol (Loamic) (Magdeburg, Saxony-Anhalt), Haplic Luvisol (Neubrandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania) and Eutric Cambisol (Loamic) (Puch, Bavaria). The field experiments were arranged in a Randomized Complete Block Design and treated with two different rates of lime (calcium carbonate). Furthermore, three rates of nitrogen in form of urea or calcium ammonium nitrate were applied every year. Liming significantly increased the pH, plant available water capacity, total pore volume and decreased bulk density in the soils six months after application, but twelve months after lime application the soil structure collapsed again causes by ploughing and chiseling. We, therefore, assume a positive influence of lime application on soil physical parameters, if tillage is excluded at least initially. On the other hand, our results from the shear stress parameters and the pre-compression stress values indicate that their changes need time and we assume that it may take several years to develop a sustainable structure system. Modeling and monitoring of acidification patterns in a limed forest catchment in the Ore Mountains, SE Germany are presented. A lumped-parameter model, MAGIC, satisfactorily reproduced the main parameters of stream water chemistry. Despite repeated whole-catchment liming, between 1993 and 1999 stream water pH increased from 4.3 to only 4.6, while calcium concentrations declined slightly. Stream water sulfate concentration declined from 687 to 396 μeq l−1, and the pronounced effect of deposition decline during the 1990s was probably more important than liming. Despite being a natural soil-forming process, soil acidification is a major agronomic challenge under humid climate conditions, as soil acidity influences several yield-relevant soil properties. It can be counterbalanced by the regular application of agricultural lime to maintain or re-establish soil fertility and to optimize plant growth and yield. To avoid underdose as well as overdose, lime rates need to be calculated carefully. The lime rate should be determined by the optimum soil pH (target pH) and the response of the soil to lime, which is described by the base neutralizing capacity (BNC). Several methods exist to determine the lime requirement (LR) to raise the soil pH to its optimum. They range from extremely time-consuming equilibration methods, which mimic the natural processes in the soil, to quick tests, which rely on some approximations and are designed to provide farmers with timely and cost-efficient data. Due to the higher analytical efforts, only limited information is available on the real BNC of particular soils. In the present paper, we report the BNC of 420 topsoil samples from Central Europe (north-east Germany), developed on sediments from the last ice age 10,000 years ago under Holocene conditions. These soils are predominantly sandy and low in humus, but they exhibit a huge spatial variability in soil properties on a small scale. The BNC was determined by adding various concentrations of Ca(OH)2 and fitting an exponential model to derive a titration curve for each sample. The coefficients of the BNC titration curve were well correlated with soil properties affecting soil acidity and pH buffer capacity, i.e., pH, soil texture and soil organic matter (SOM). From the BNC model, the LRs (LRBNC) were derived and compared with LRVDLUFA based on the standard protocol in Germany as established by the Association of German Agricultural Analytic and Research Institutes (VDLUFA). The LRBNC and LRVDLUFA correlated well but the LRVDLUFA were generally by approximately one order of magnitude higher. This is partly due to the VDLUFA concept to recommend a maintenance or conservation liming, even though the pH value is in the optimum range, to keep it there until the next lime application during the following rotation. Furthermore, the VDLUFA method was primarily developed from field experiments where natural soil acidification and management practices depressed the effect of lime treatment. The BNC method, on the other hand, is solely based on laboratory analysis with standardized soil samples. This indicates the demand for further research to develop a sound scientific algorithm that complements LRBNC with realistic values of annual Ca2+ removal and acidification by natural processes and N fertilization. In response to a wide-spread decline in forest vitality associated with acid rain in the 1980s, liming of soils has been implemented in many federal states in Germany to buffer further acid deposition and improve availability of nutrients such as calcium and magnesium. As a consequence, it may also increase vitality and depth of fine-root systems and hence improve the drought tolerance of species such as Norway spruce [ Picea abies (L.) Karst.], which occurs mostly on acidic forest soils. However, the influence of repeated liming on drought tolerance of trees has never been studied. Here we compared the resistance, recovery and resilience of radial growth in P. abies in relation to drought in limed and control stands and assessed how the dosage and interval between lime application and drought year influences the radial growth response of P. abies. We analyzed radial growth in 198 P. abies trees of six experimental sites in south–west Germany. An analysis of the radial increment over the last 30 years allowed the analysis of drought events shortly after the first liming (short-term effect) as well as posterior drought events (mid- to long-term effects). Generalized linear models were developed to assess the influence of drought intensity, site and period since first liming on the drought tolerance of Norway spruce. Regardless of drought intensity, there was no general increase in drought resistance of Norway spruce in response to liming. However, drought resistance of radial growth improved on a loamy site that was additionally treated with wood ash 30 years after the first lime application. Furthermore, recovery and resilience of radial growth after severe drought events were generally better in spruce trees of limed treatments. This indicates a shorter stress period in spruce trees growing on limed soil, which may reduce their susceptibility to secondary, drought-related pests and pathogens. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Liming is an effective measure to increase the soil pH and to counterbalance soil acidification. Therefore, the liming recommendations (LRs) for agricultural practice consider two aspects: changing the initial pH to the desired pH and compensating for all pH decreases taking place within the liming interval. The separation of these aspects is essential to optimize LRs and to minimize lime losses to the environment. Therefore, we developed a pedotransfer function (PTF) to calculate the lime demand to change the initial pH to the desired pH and compared the results with the LRs for agricultural practice. Applying this PTF to a set of 126 soil samples that were analyzed for base neutralization capacity could explain approximately 78% of the variability in the pH changes after the addition of different amounts of Ca(OH)2. Consequently, the lime demand to change the initial pH to the desired pH increased by approximately one-sixth compared to the lime demand proposed by the liming recommendation scheme, which is commonly used in Germany. From the numerical difference between the lime demand according to the LRs and the PTF, we calculated the annual acidification rates based on the soil texture, organic matter content and initial pH. Decoupling the abovementioned two aspects of LRs might be helpful to optimize the LRs by adapting to different regions, diverse management strategies and a changing climate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

From 2011 until 2018, the German Agricultural Soil Inventory collected 3104 soil samples from arable land and permanent grassland. It is the first inventory that presents a harmonized, representative and reliable database for the soil pH across Germany. Additionally, it includes soil management data such as liming. Soil pH is one of the key variables of various important processes in agroecosystems. It affects nutrient availability, crop growth inhibition due to Al toxicity and soil structural properties. The soil pH should be within the desired range for optimum crop management, in Germany recommended by the Association of German Agricultural Analytic and Research Institutes. The mean soil pH (CaCl2) was 6.1 for the cropland and 5.5 for the grassland sites. About half of the sampling sites were below the optimum range. For half of these sites lime was not applied in the last ten years. Besides the anthropogenic impact, precipitation and parent material control the pH in Germany. In general, soils with lower pH value occurred on sandy soils in northern Germany whereas high pH values dominated on loess and carbonate-rich soils. Further factors influencing the soil pH will be analyzed to generate a model describing the interaction of liming practice and soil pH of German agricultural soils. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Liming agricultural fields is necessary for counteracting soil acidity and is one of the oldest operations in soil fertility management. However, the best management practice for liming in Germany only insufficiently considers within-field soil variability. Thus, a site-specific variable rate liming strategy was developed and tested on nine agricultural fields in a quaternary landscape of north-east Germany. It is based on the use of a proximal soil sensing module using potentiometric, geoelectric and optical sensors that have been found to be proxies for soil pH, texture and soil organic matter (SOM), which are the most relevant lime requirement (LR) affecting soil parameters. These were compared to laboratory LR analysis of reference soil samples using the soil's base neutralizing capacity (BNC). Sensor data fusion utilizing stepwise multi-variate linear regression (MLR) analysis was used to predict BNC-based LR (LRBNC) for each field. The MLR models achieved high adjusted R2 values between 0.70 and 0.91 and low RMSE values from 65 to 204 kg CaCO3 ha−1. In comparison to univariate modeling, MLR models improved prediction by 3 to 27% with 9% improvement on average. The relative importance of covariates in the field-specific prediction models were quantified by computing standardized regression coefficients (SRC). The importance of covariates varied between fields, which emphasizes the necessity of a field-specific calibration of proximal sensor data. However, soil pH was the most important parameter for LR determination of the soils studied. Geostatistical semivariance analysis revealed differences between fields in the spatial variability of LRBNC. The sill-to-range ratio (SRR) was used to quantify and compare spatial LRBNC variability of the nine test fields. Finally, high resolution LR maps were generated. The BNC-based LR method also produces negative LR values for soil samples with pH values above which lime is required. Hence, the LR maps additionally provide an estimate on the quantity of chemically acidifying fertilizers that can be applied to obtain an optimal soil pH value. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Soil pH is one of the key factors affecting soil fertility. For optimal plant growth on agricultural land, suitable liming management is recommended. The basis of appropriate soil pH management in agriculture is provided by recommendations on site‐specific optimum pH ranges and lime application. Aims: This study determined the current variability of soil pH of cropland and grassland in Germany, analysed the factors associated with this variability, evaluated pH management on German agricultural land and developed a national map of current pH values in agricultural soils. Methods: The study mainly focused on the topsoil layers of 2197 cropland sites (0–30 cm) and 812 permanent grasslands sites (0–10 cm) in the German Agricultural Soil Inventory, but reports soil pH (CaCl2) down to 50 cm. Random forest models were applied to identify environmental and management factors related to soil pH and develop a map of pH values in agricultural topsoils in Germany. The current pH status of the sampled sites was classified in accordance with German lime requirement recommendations. Results: The soil pH of both land‐use types showed a bimodal distribution, with peaks at pH 6.1 and 7.3 for cropland and pH 5.0 and 7.1 for grassland. Soils with pH <5 were mainly found on sandy soils in northern Germany and acidic parent material in southern Germany. Alkaline soils predominated in central and southern Germany on loess and carbonate‐rich material. The carbonate content was the major factor explaining soil pH variability, but its effect was restricted to pH values >6. Only 35.4% of the cropland sites and 23.9% of the grassland sites were within the recommended optimum pH range. The percentage of sites below the recommended pH range was greater for grassland than for cropland (52.0% and 41.0%, respectively). Conclusions: Soil pH of German agricultural land is influenced by natural factors and pH management. The first national inventory of soil pH showed that many agricultural soils exhibited pH values lower than those recommended. More conscientious pH management could help improve soil fertility and crop yield. This should be based on the regular topsoil pH analysis conducted by most farmers every five years, together with the determination of plant‐available potassium and phosphorus in soils. Soil acidification is caused by natural paedogenetic processes and anthropogenic impacts but can be counteracted by regular lime application. Although sensors and applicators for variable-rate liming (VRL) exist, there are no established strategies for using these tools or helping to implement VRL in practice. Therefore, this study aimed to provide guidelines for site-specific liming based on proximal soil sensing. First, high-resolution soil maps of the liming-relevant indicators (pH, soil texture and soil organic matter content) were generated using on-the-go sensors. The soil acidity was predicted by two ion-selective antimony electrodes (RMSEpH: 0.37); the soil texture was predicted by a combination of apparent electrical resistivity measurements and natural soil-borne gamma emissions (RMSEclay: 0.046 kg kg−1); and the soil organic matter (SOM) status was predicted by a combination of red (660 nm) and near-infrared (NIR, 970 nm) optical reflection measurements (RMSESOM: 6.4 g kg−1). Second, to address the high within-field soil variability (pH varied by 2.9 units, clay content by 0.44 kg kg−1 and SOM by 5.5 g kg−1), a well-established empirical lime recommendation algorithm that represents the best management practices for liming in Germany was adapted, and the lime requirements (LRs) were determined. The generated workflow was applied to a 25.6 ha test field in north-eastern Germany, and the variable LR was compared to the conventional uniform LR. The comparison showed that under the uniform liming approach, 63% of the field would be over-fertilized by approximately 12 t of lime, 6% would receive approximately 6 t too little lime and 31% would still be adequately limed. The European fire salamander (Salamandra salamandra) is a widespread species that occurs in a variety of habitats throughout its range. We studied if different environmental parameters influence presence as well as abundance of larvae within different local landscape units across a more than 5,000 km² large Central European study area. This knowledge is crucial to differentiate between habitat specific absence/low abundance and externally triggered extinctions or population declines, e.g. through newly emerging infectious diseases. Within our study area, the salamander plague, caused by the invasive fungus Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans, has recently been invoked as major factor for population declines in S. salamandra. We estimated larval habitat preferences of 135 European fire salamander populations (presence-absence only), and estimated larval abundances in 85 out of them. In the entire study area, regardless of landscape units, presence of European fire salamander larvae was positively affected by low elevation, a high number of pools (preferred larval microhabitats) and a high amount of consumable macrozoobenthos in the reproduction creeks as well as a high proportion of forest cover in the surrounding terrestrial habitats. Apart from some minor differences among landscape units when they were analysed separately, we observed in many cases a positive effect of a high number of pools (11 out of 56 overall models = 20%) and, furthermore, a negative effect of a late mapping date (mainly due to larval drift caused by heavy rainfalls in early summer and metamorphosis) on larval abundances (12 out of 56 overall models = 21%). Consequently, at least in this Central European study area, which includes mountainous regions up to 700 m a.s.l. ('West- and Osteifel', 'Hunsrück'), a mainly agriculturally used lime soil plateau ('Gutland') and a river valley ('Moseltal'), these habitat preferences can be used to differentiate between habitat-caused and disease-caused absence of European fire salamanders and also population declines using the larval population. For more than 40 years, farmers in Germany have used the fertilization recommendation schema provided by the Association of German Agricultural Investigation and Research Institutions (VDLUFA) to quantify the required lime (CaO) demand of arable mineral soils. To be applicable as guidelines in practice, the results of 30 years of fertilization experiments that studied the correlation between crop yields and the actual soil pH, the soil texture, and the soil organic matter (SOM) content were finally condensed into a look-up table system. However, because the original experimental data are no longer accessible, the purpose of this study is to reconstruct the interaction between the three soil parameters and their appropriate lime demands. Therefore, the class-based, stepwise approach of the look-up table system is transferred into a continuous, stepless approach using mathematical models. Under the precondition to preserve the pH-, texture- and SOM-dependent CaO amounts recommended in the look-up system (n = 317) to the greatest extent possible, the algorithm was successful; more than 99% of their variability could be explained by the models.
