Introduction: Root canal sealing materials play a crucial role in an endodontic procedure by forming a bond between the dentinal walls and the gutta-percha. The current study aims to analyse the dentinal tubule penetration and adhesive pattern, including the push-out bond strength of six commercially available root canal sealers. Methodology: Eighty-four mandibular first premolars were split into seven groups (and n = 12), Group 1: Dia-Root, Group 2: One-Fil, Group 3: BioRoot RCS, Group 4: AH Plus, Group 5: CeraSeal, Group 6: iRoot SP, Group 7: GP without sealer (control). Two groups were made, one for dentinal tubule penetration and the other for push-out bond strength; the total sample size was one hundred sixty-eight. Root canal treatment was performed using a method called the crown down technique, and for obturation, the single cone technique was used. A confocal laser scanning microscope (Leica, Microsystem Heidel GmbH, Version 2.00 build 0585, Germany) was used to evaluate dentinal tubule penetration, and Universal Testing Machine was utilised to measure the push-out bond strength (Shimadzu, Japan) using a plunger size of 0.4 mm and speed of 1mm/min. Finally, the adhesive pattern of the sealers was analysed by HIROX digital microscope (KH-7700). Statistical analysis was carried out by a one-way Anova test, Dunnet's T3 test, and Chi-square test. Results: Highest dentinal tubule penetration was noticed with One-Fil (p<0.05), followed by iRoot SP, CeraSeal, AH Plus, Dia-Root also, the most negligible value was recorded for BioRoot RCS. Meanwhile, BioRoot RCS (p<0.05) demonstrated the greater value of mean push-out bond strength, followed by One-fil, iRoot SP, CeraSeal, AH Plus and Dia-Root. Regarding adhesive pattern, most of the samples were classified as type 3 and type 4 which implies greater sealing ability and better adherence to the dentinal wall. However, BioRoot RCS revealed the most type 4 (p<0.05), followed by AH Plus, One-Fil, CeraSeal and Dia-Root. Conclusion: The highest dentinal tubule penetration was shown by One-Fil compared to other groups. Meanwhile, BioRoot RCS had greater push-out bond strength and more adhesive pattern than other tested materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Investigations of historical conservation materials on historical stained glass windows of the Naumburg Cathedral in Germany offered an opportunity for the study of polymers, naturally aged in a non-controlled environment. This allowed the conservation history of the cathedral to be traced and expanded by valuable insights. The historical materials were characterized through the use of spectroscopy (FTIR, Raman), thermal analysis, PY-GC/MS, and SEC on taken samples. The analyses show that acrylate resins were predominantly used for conservation. The lamination material from the 1940s is particularly noteworthy. Epoxy resins were also identified in isolated cases. Artificial aging was used to investigate the influence of environmental influences on the properties of the identified materials. Through a multi-stage aging program, influences of UV radiation, high temperatures and high humidity can be considered in isolation. Piaflex F20, Epilox, Paraloid B72 as a modern material and combinations of Paraloid B72/diisobutyl phthalate and PMA/diisobutyl phthalate were investigated. The parameters yellowing, FTIR spectra, Raman spectra, molecular mass and conformation, glass transition temperature, thermal behavior, and adhesive strength on glass were determined. The effects of the environmental parameters on the investigated materials are differentiated. UV and extreme temperatures tend to show a stronger influence than humidity. The comparison of the artificially aged samples with the naturally aged samples from the cathedral shows that the latter were less aged. Recommendations for the conservation of the historical stained glass windows were derived from the results of the investigation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Liassodites obsti gen. et sp. nov., an Early Jurassic member of Trachypachidae, is described from Western Pomerania (Germany). An epoxy resin transfer method is applied for the preparation of three-dimensionally preserved fossil. An annotated list of Palaeozoic and Mesozoic trachypachid genera was elaborated. For each trachypachid fossil member and erroneously placed genus, a short diagnosis or available arguments on systematic position are proposed. The relations of the subfamilies Eodromeinae and Coptoclaviscinae (Coptoclavidae) are discussed. The description of Liassodites obsti gen. et sp. nov. makes it possible to suppose that the currently recognised hiatus between families Carabidae and Trachypachidae is not great enough to regard them as two separate families. The genus Coptoclavisca should be regarded as a member of Trachypachidae or Carabidae (including Trachypachinae). The new genus Apermunda gen. nov. is proposed for Petrodromeus minor. Novunda nom. nov. is proposed for Unda and the following binominal names are changed: Novunda angulata comb. nov., N. cursoria comb. nov., N. microplata comb. nov., N. pachycephala comb. nov. and N. chifengensis comb. nov. A synonymy of Evertus and Fortiseode is established, with change of species name: Evertus pervalimand comb. nov. The taxa Beipiaocarabus, Leptopodocoleus (including Leptopodocoleidae), Praedodromeus, Procalosoma, Xinbinia, 'Eodromeus' viriosus, 'Unda' chonggezhuangensis and 'Unda' pandurata, 'Karadromeus' xiangfanggouensis are regarded as incertae sedis. • Epoxy sealer + β-TCP, and Epoxy sealer + NAC showed low cytotoxicity. • Addition of NAC improved the antimicrobial property against E. faecalis. • Incorporating β-TCP or NAC improves the adhesiveness and biocompatibility. This in vitro study was designed to evaluate the biocompatibility, adhesiveness, and antimicrobial activity of epoxy resin-based sealer associated with N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) or beta-tricalcium phosphate nanoparticles (β-TCP) as an experimental retro-filling material. Cytotoxicity was assessed using 2,3-Bis-(Methoxy-4-Nitro-5-Sulphophenyl)-2H-Tetrazolium-5-Carboxanilide (XTT) and Sulforhodamine B (SRB) assays after exposing human periodontal ligament fibroblasts to extracts of the materials for 1, 3, or 7 days. For the adhesive resistance test, root canals (48 single-root teeth) were instrumented with Reciproc #40 files (VDW GmbH, Germany) and obturated. After 7 days, the apices were sectioned and a retrograde cavity prepared and filled with the experimental materials (Mineral trioxide aggregate, Epoxy sealer, Epoxy sealer + NAC, and Epoxy sealer + β-TCP). For the push-out test, one 2-mm thick slice was obtained from the apical third of each specimen. Antimicrobial activity was performed using agar diffusion method. Biofilms were grown in microplates and exposed to the extracts of retro-filled materials, followed by analysis of growth inhibition on agar plates. Epoxy sealer in association with β-TCP or NAC showed better bond strength while Mineral trioxide aggregate allowed for the lowest adhesion. Mineral trioxide aggregate, Epoxy sealer + β-TCP, and Epoxy sealer + NAC showed low cytotoxicity. Epoxy sealer was the most cytotoxic. In antimicrobial activity assays, all materials had no effect on Candida albicans. Addition of NAC improved the antimicrobial property of Epoxy sealer against Enterococcus faecalis compared to unmodified Epoxy sealer (P < 0.05). Background Workers exposed to epoxy products are at risk of developing allergic contact dermatitis. Objectives To compare workers throughout the German construction industry with and without skin allergy to epoxy resins, hardeners, and/or reactive diluents, and to investigate which determinants are related to the development of epoxy allergy. Methods A questionnaire was completed by 179 epoxy allergy cases, and 151 epoxy workers as controls. Crude and adjusted odds ratios ( ORs) and 95% confidence intervals ( CIs) were estimated by the use of backwards stepwise logistic regression analysis. A multiple imputation approach was used to deal with missing data. Results Epoxy allergy was associated with an unusually high level of exposure to epoxy products [ OR 2.13 (95% CI: 1.01-4.51)], wearing short sleeves or short trousers [ OR 2.38 (95% CI: 1.03-5.52)], and not always using the correct type of gloves [ OR 2.12 (95% CI: 1.12-4.01)]. A monotonic increasing risk was found with increasing exposure hours per week [ OR 1.72 (95% CI: 1.39-2.14)]. Not using skin cream was inversely associated with epoxy allergy [ OR 0.22 (95% CI: 0.08-0.59)]. Years working with epoxy products were inversely associated with epoxy allergy [ OR 0.41 (95% CI: 0.27-0.61) per 10-year increase], suggesting a healthy worker survivor effect. Abstract: The Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik in Greifswald is building up the stellarator fusion experiment Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X). To operate the superconducting magnet system the vacuum and the cold structures are protected by a thermal insulated cryostat. The plasma vessel forms the inner cryostat wall, the outer wall is realised by a thermal insulated outer vessel. In addition 254 thermal insulated ports are fed through the cryogenic vacuum to allow the access to the plasma vessel for heating systems, supply lines or plasma diagnostics. The thermal insulation is being manufactured and assembled by MAN Diesel & Turbo SE (Germany). It consists of a multi-layer insulation (MLI) made of aluminized Kapton with a silk like fibreglass spacer and a thermal shield covering the inner cryostat surfaces. The shield on the plasma vessel is made of fibreglass reinforced epoxy resin with integrated copper meshes. The outer vessel insulation is made of brass panels with an average size of 3.3×2.0m2. Cooling loops made of stainless steel are connected via copper strips to the brass panels. Especially the complex 3 D shape of the plasma vessel, the restricted space inside the cryostat and the consideration of the operational component movements influenced the design work heavily. The manufacturing and the assembly has to fulfil stringent geometrical tolerances e.g. for the outer vessel panels +3/−2mm. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Introduction: Bio-C Sealer (BC; Angelus, Londrina, PR, Brazil) and Sealer Plus BC (SPBC; MK Life, Porto Alegre, Brazil) are new ready-to-use bioceramic endodontic sealers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the biocompatibility and bioactive potential of BC and SPBC sealers in comparison with AH Plus (AHP; Dentsply DeTrey Gmbh, Konstanz, Germany) in subcutaneous tissue of rats., Methods: Polyethylene tubes filled with materials and empty tubes, serving as the control group, were implanted in the subcutaneous tissues of rats. After 7, 15, 30, and 60 days, the tubes with connective tissue were removed, and inflammatory cells (ICs)/mm 2 and immunolabeled cells for interleukin (IL)-6 were evaluated. Osteocalcin and von Kossa analysis were also performed. Data were submitted to analysis of variance and Tukey tests, with a significance level of 5%., Results: At 7 days, SPBC showed lower ICs than BC (P < .05). AHP exhibited greater immunolabeled cells for IL-6 (P < .05). After 15 days, BC showed lower ICs and IL-6 compared with other materials. At 30 days, SPBC and AHP showed higher values for ICs (P < .05). After 60 days, calcium silicate sealers did not show statistical difference (P > .05) for ICs and IL-6, with values lower than AHP (P < .05). The materials showed positive structures to von Kossa staining. BC exhibited osteocalcin labeling in all periods. SPBC showed osteocalcin labeling from 15-60 days. Introduction: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of ultrasonic activation (UA) of endodontic sealers on dentin tubule penetration and the bond strength to root dentin., Method: One hundred single-rooted teeth were prepared with 40.06 nickel-titanium instruments and divided into 2 groups: with or without UA. Three resin-based sealers (MTA Fillapex [Angelus Dental Solutions, Londrina, PR, Brazil], Sealer Plus [MK Life Medical and Dental Products, Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil], and AH Plus [Dentsply, DeTrey GmbH, Konstanz, Germany]; n = 20) and 2 calcium silicate-based sealers (Sealer Plus BC [MK Life Medical and Dental Products] and EndoSequence BC [Brasseler, Savannah, GA], n = 20) were used and subdivided (n = 10) according to the protocols. Fluo-3 (Thermo Fisher Scientific, Waltham, MA) and rhodamine B dyes were added to the calcium silicate- and resin-based sealers, respectively. In the UA groups, the activation was performed for 40 seconds followed by lateral compaction. Samples were transversely sectioned to evaluate the dentin tubule penetration and the bond strength to root dentin. The penetration data were analyzed with the Student t test, 1-factor analysis of variance, and Bonferroni tests. Bond strength was evaluated using the Student t test, Kruskal-Wallis, and Dunn post hoc test., Results: Resin-based sealers showed the highest tubule penetration without UA (P < .05). UA significantly enhanced MTA Fillapex and Endosequence BC dentin tubule penetration (P < .05). AH Plus and Sealer Plus BC improved their bond strength to root dentin after UA (P < .05). AH Plus/UA, Sealer Plus/UA, and Sealer Plus BC/UA presented the highest bond strength values (P < .05). Aim: To evaluate in a laboratory setting the effects of Endosequence BC Sealer HiFlow (Brasseler USA, Savannah, GA, USA), a novel calcium silicate-based sealer developed for use in warm canal filling techniques, on human periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSCs)., Methodology: Eluates of EndoSequence BC Sealer HiFlow (BCHiF) (Brasseler USA), EndoSequence BC Sealer (BCS) (Brasseler USA) and AH Plus (AHP) (Dentsply DeTrey GmbH, Konstanz, Germany) were placed in contact with hPDLSCs. The characterization of the chemical elements of the root canal sealers was assessed using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX). Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to determine the ion release of the sealers. MTT assay and wound healing techniques were used to determine cell viability and migration, respectively. Cell morphology and cell attachment were assessed using a direct contact technique of hPDLSCs onto the surface of the sealers and analysed by SEM. The bioactivity potential was carried out with the Alizarin Red and qPCR testing methods. The statistical differences were evaluated using one-way anova and Tukey's test (P < 0.05)., Results: ICP-MS and EDX revealed significantly more zirconium in BCHiF than BCS (P < 0.05), whereas BCS had slightly higher levels of Ca 2+ than BCHiF (P < 0.05). The cell viability assay revealed no relevant differences between BCS and BCHiF when compared with the control group (P > 0.05). Both BCS and BCHiF had similar rates of cell migration to the control group at 24 and 48 h. Cell morphology and adhesion capacity were also similar for BCS and BCHiF groups, whilst the AHP group was associated with reduced adhesion capacity. The Alizarin Red assay revealed a significant difference between the BCS and the control group (P < 0.001), as well as for the BCHiF group (P < 0.001). Finally, BCS and BCHiF promoted overexpression of osteo/cementogenic genes., Conclusions: In general, EndoSequence BC Sealer HiFlow possesses suitable biological properties to be safely used as a root canal filling material and promote increased expression of oste/cementogenic genes by hPDLSCs., (© 2020 International Endodontic Journal. Introduction: The aim of the present study was to assess the effects of different silicate-based sealers (ie, BioRoot RCS [Septodont, Saint Maur des Fosses, France], ProRoot ES [Dentsply Sirona, York, PA], and MTA Fillapex [Angelus, Londrina, PR, Brazil]) on cytokine production and viability of human periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs). AH Plus (Dentsply DeTrey GmbH, Konstanz, Germany) was used as a reference material., Methods: PDLSCs were cultured either in 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional conditions (in 0.15%-0.5% PuraMatrix [BD Biosciences, Bedford, MA]) for 24 hours with eluates from set endodontic sealers. Additionally, the toxicity of eluates from endodontic sealers was evaluated using an in vitro root model experimental procedure. PDLSC viability was determined using the 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide assay. PDLSC culture medium was used for cytokine quantification (interleukin [IL]-6, IL-8, growth-regulated oncogene, IL,-4 and IL-10) using the HCYTMAG-60K-PX41 Milliplex kit (EMD Millipore, Burlington, MA)., Results: In 2-dimensional culture conditions, BioRoot RCS revealed a good PDLSC viability rate. ProRoot ES had no effect on PDLSC viability regardless of the dilution. MTA Fillapex was strongly cytotoxic even at the lowest extract dilutions (1:1, 1:2, and 1:4). Encapsulation of PDLSCs in PuraMatrix tended to decrease the cytotoxic effect of the sealers. In the 3-dimensional in vitro root model experimental procedure, BioRoot RCS, ProRoot ES, and MTA Fillapex revealed a cytocompatibility pattern. Different calcium silicate-based sealers exhibited different proinflammatory cytokine production. BioRoot RCS greatly stimulated the release of IL-10 and, to a lesser degree, IL-4 by PDLSCs (P < .05)., Conclusions: BioRoot RCS and ProRoot ES did not induce proinflammatory cytokines and promoted anti-inflammatory cytokine secretion by PDLSCs that may have a positive local impact by attenuating an initial inflammatory response., (Copyright © 2020 American Association of Endodontists. Introduction: This study evaluated the effect of residual substances derived from irrigant solutions and intracanal medications on the rheological properties of a silicone, gutta-percha, and bioactive glass-based sealer in comparison with an epoxy resin-based sealer., Methods: Thin films of contaminants (0.5 μL) (3% sodium hypochlorite [NaOCl], chlorhexidine digluconate [CHX], 17% EDTA, calcium hydroxide, 40% citric acid, or distilled water [DW]) were applied along with freshly mixed GuttaFlow Bioseal (GFB; Coltene/Whaledent, Langenau, Germany) or AH Plus Jet (Dentsply DeTrey, Konstanz, Germany) on the lower plate of a dynamic rheometer. Rheological measurements were performed in oscillating mode at the strain amplitude, angular frequency, and constant temperature of 0.01%, 10 rad/s, and 37°C, respectively. Samples without contaminants served as controls. All measurements were performed 5 times. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and 1-way analysis of variance followed by the Student-Newman-Keuls test were performed to analyze the results (P < .05)., Results: The contaminants did not alter the setting time of GFB compared with the controls; however, CHX and calcium hydroxide decreased its complex viscosity (ƞ*) (P < .05). The setting time of AH Plus Jet was increased by DW, CHX, citric acid, and EDTA (P < .05). All contaminants decreased its ƞ* at the setting point (P < .05). NaOCl led to the greatest alteration of its rheological parameters., Conclusions: Irrigant solutions and intracanal medications adversely affected at least 1 of the tested rheological properties of both sealers, except for DW and 3% NaOCl, which did not alter any rheological property of GFB., (Copyright © 2019 American Association of Endodontists. Aim: To evaluate bone tissue reactions in rats to an MTA-based endodontic sealer with and without the addition of various concentrations of C3A or C3A + Ag., Methodology: Bone tissue reactions were evaluated in 45 Wistar rats after 7, 30 and 90 days (n = 5 per period). Three surgical cavities were prepared on the right femur and filled with 0.2 mL MTA Fillapex, MTA Fillapex + C3A and C3A + Ag at various concentrations: AH Plus (Dentsply DeTrey GmbH, Konstanz, Germany), EndoSequence BC (Brasseler USA, Savannah, GA, USA) or no sealer (negative control). By the end of each experimental period, animals were randomly euthanized. The samples were histologically processed and analysed using a light microscope. The presence of inflammatory cells, fibres and hard tissue barrier formation was evaluated. Data were analysed statistically using nonparametric tests to compare the differences between groups. Multiple groups were compared using the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U-tests with a Bonferroni correction at P = 0.05., Results: The inflammatory response significantly decreased from 30 to 90 days (P < 0.05). Fibre condensation was similar amongst the groups at 07 and 30 days after intervention (P > 0.05). At 90 days, however, fibres were absent in most specimens of EndoSequence BC Sealer, AH Plus, MTA Fillapex and the control group, whilst they were still observed in samples of the modified sealers (P < 0.05). At 90 days, all specimens of AH Plus, EndoSequence BC Sealer and control group had complete formation of hard tissue barrier. In the MTA Fillapex group, as well as in the modified sealers groups, partial deposition of mineralized tissue was noticed., Conclusion: The hypothesis tested that the incorporation of C3A and C3A + Ag particles to MTA Fillapex would improve bone tissue repair was partially accepted, since modified MTA Fillapex did not have the same repair potential as the commercial bioceramic material., (© 2019 International Endodontic Journal. Background: In Germany, occupational skin diseases rank first in the occupational skin disease statistics for many years. Especially, occupationally acquired contact allergies as well as multi-sensitization are the most important predictors for a poor prognosis and persistent eczema., Objectives: To update the spectrum and sensitization frequencies of most frequent allergens from the standard series in Germany in patients with occupationally acquired type IV sensitizations in general and within different occupational groups., Methods: Data of all employed patients (age range: 16-68 years, n = 14234) patch tested between 2003 and 2013 in the German Departments of the Information Network of Departments of Dermatology (IVDK) and diagnosed occupationally acquired contact dermatitis after patch testing were analyzed. The control group was composed of all other patients (n = 31706) within the same time frame, in which occupationally acquired allergic contact dermatitis was negated explicitly., Results: The prevalence Ratio (PR; indicating risk) was significantly increased for: Thiuram-mix (PR 5.63 95 %CI 4.97-6.4), zinkdiethyldithiocarbamate (PR 6.22 95 %CI 4.76-8.22), mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) (PR 3.88 95 %CI 3.09-4.89), mercapto-mix without MBT (PR 3.23 95 %CI 2.59-4.03), N-isopropyl-N'-phenyl-p-phenylene diamine (IPPD) (PR 2.3195 %CI 1.87-2.86), epoxy resin (PR 2.82 95 %CI 2.45-3.25), chloromethylisothiazolinone/methylisothiazolinone (MCI/MI) (PR 2.19 95 %CI 1.97-2.42) and compositae mix II (PR 2.05 95 %CI 1.45-2.89). They were the predominant occupational allergens and were at least associated with a doubled risk (PR ≥ 2.0) for acquiring occupationally allergic contact dermatitis. The highest risk increase was identified in employees in the health services, in agriculture, metal industry, food and service industry as well as building trades, Conclusions: A limited number of occupationally relevant allergens cause the majority of sensitizations in the workforce, if standard series allergens are concerned. Data analysis of national and international contact allergy data bases provide valuable information on sensitization rates and profiles in skin risk occupations to implement targeted prevention strategies. To diagnose occupational allergic contact dermatitis in individual cases additional testing of occupation related patch test series as well as patients' own products is commonly inevitable.

It states that the new plant in Esslingen produces specialty epoxy resins for various uses including composites for marine, automotive, and mass transit. Furthermore, it says that the plant in Montenegro specializes in the production of urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins.
