Citrinin (CIT), a mycotoxin known to exert nephrotoxicity, is a contaminant in food and feed. Since CIT contamination is not regularly analyzed, data on its occurrence and especially levels in food commodities are insufficient for conducting a conventional exposure assessment. Yet, human biomonitoring, i.e., an analysis of CIT and its metabolite dihydrocitrinone (DH-CIT) in urine samples allows to estimate exposure. This study investigated CIT exposure in young (2–14 years) and adult (24–61 years) residents of three federal states in Germany. A total of 179 urine samples from children and 142 from adults were collected and analyzed by a targeted LC-MS/MS based method for presence of CIT and DH-CIT. At least one of the biomarkers was detected and quantified in all urines, which indicated a widespread dietary exposure to the mycotoxin in Germany. Interestingly, the biomarker concentrations of CITtotal (sum of CIT and DH-CIT) were higher in children's urine (range 0.05–7.62 ng/mL; median of 0.54 ng/mL) than in urines from adults (range 0.04–3.5 ng/mL; median 0.3 ng/mL). The biomarker levels (CITtotal) of individual urines served to calculate the probable daily CIT intake, for comparison to a value of 0.2 µg/kg bw/day defined as 'level of no concern for nephrotoxicity' by the European Food Safety Authority. The median exposure of German adults was 0.013 µg/kg b.w., with only one urine donor exceeding this provisional tolerable daily intake (pTDI) for CIT. The median exposure of children was 0.05 µg/kg bw per day (i.e., 25% of the pTDI); however, CIT exposure in 12 individuals (6.3% of our study group) exceeded the limit value, with a maximum intake of 0.46 µg/kg b.w. per day. In conclusion, these results show evidence for non-negligible exposure to CIT in some individuals in Germany, mainly in children. Purpose and aim of the study: The paper aim is to analyse qualitatively youth genderbased discrimination in employment. Design / Methodology / Approach: The methodology of exploratory case study research was employed in this research. The method of data collection was observation. Observation was chosen, as it is an effective method of collecting qualitative data for building an adequate picture related to the phenomenon investigated. The obtained data were processed via pedagogical interpretation. The data were summarised. Main Findings: Young engineering specialists have not been affected by gender based discrimination in employment. This finding based on the qualitative study is in accordance with the quantitative data received from a questionnaire survey recently implemented in selected countries of the European Union. Originality: The originality of the paper is shown by a qualitative analysis of youth gender-based discrimination in employment, as there is a gap in such studies. Introduction: Suicidal behaviour still cannot be sufficiently predicted. Exposure to suicidal behaviour in the personal social environment is assumed to moderate the individual's transition from suicidal ideation to suicidal behaviour within the integrated motivational–volitional model of suicidal behaviour (IMV model). This study aimed to investigate this moderating effect in a German high‐risk sample. Methods: We interviewed 308 psychiatric inpatients (53% female) aged 18 to 81 years (M = 36.9, SD = 14.30) admitted after attempted suicide (53%) or due to an acute suicidal crisis (47%) regarding exposure events in their social environment. Four types of exposure events were analysed using moderation analyses: familial suicides/suicide attempts and non‐familial suicides/suicide attempts. Additionally, the numbers of reported exposure events were compared between patients with and without a recent suicide attempt as well as between patients with lifetime suicide attempts and lifetime suicidal ideation. Results: Neither moderating effects of exposure events on the relationship between lifetime suicidal ideation and recent suicidal behaviour nor group differences between suicidal ideators and suicide attempters regarding the exposure events were found. Conclusions: Exposure events might have differential and possibly protective effects on suicidal behaviour—depending on type and quality (intensity, personal relevance and recency) of event—and on the outcome (suicide vs. suicide attempt). Palm oil is one of the most widely used vegetable oils by the food industry but there is limited information on actual intake. A detailed intake assessment of palm oil for Spain and Germany was conducted. For Spain, mean palm oil intakes ranged from 2.06 g/day in the elderly to 4.54 g/day in children and adolescents, while high-level intakes ranged from 10.34 g/day in the elderly to 20.88 g/day in toddlers. For Germany, mean palm oil intakes ranged from 3.06 g/day in toddlers to 6.22 g/day in the very elderly, while high-level intakes ranged from 13.61 g/day in toddlers to 30.10 g/day in the elderly. For both countries, the main contributing food categories to mean palm oil intake were biscuits, cakes, bread, breakfast cereal and margarine. In summary, the present paper provides a realistic assessment of the intake of palm oil in two EU countries for different population groups. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DON and ZEN residues in the blood and urine of dairy cows can be used to predict the outer exposure to DON and ZEN expressed per kilogram diet for a risk evaluation based on comparisons to critical dietary concentrations. This method was used to evaluate the exposure of dairy cows from 12 farms located in Brandenburg, Germany, fed rations with unknown DON and ZEN concentrations (N = 244). The corresponding diet concentrations predicted by different methods from analyzed blood and urine samples varied significantly amongst farms from 0 to 1.6 mg/kg for DON and 0 to 3.0 mg/kg for ZEN at a reference dry matter content of 88% but independently of lactational state (post-partum vs. early lactation). This significant variation was noticed below the critical dietary DON concentration of 5 mg/kg, while the ZEN concentration in one farm exceeded the critical ZEN level of 0.5 mg/kg markedly. Predicted DON concentrations of rations increased with the proportion of maize silage, while the high ZEN concentration found in one farm was most likely related to a higher proportion of sugar beet pulp supposedly highly contaminated by ZEN. Exceeding the critical dietary ZEN concentration and significant variations in DON contents below the critical level was not related to performance, reproductive performance, and health-related traits of cows. For a more consistent evaluation of possible associations between the inner exposure of cows to DON and ZEN, more frequent longitudinal observations of both mycotoxin residue levels and performance and health traits are required., (© 2024. Beta‐blocker overdose is potentially harmful due to the strong blood pressure‐lowering and heart rate‐lowering effects. However, conflicting data exist as to their differential toxicity, single‐substance exposures and the effect of co‐exposure with additional antihypertensive medication. For this, a 10‐year retrospective, explorative analysis of the Mainz Poison Center/Germany database with regard to circumstances of beta‐blocker exposure, doses, symptoms and treatment was carried out. Analyses were restricted to adult patients with single‐substance exposures and co‐exposures with one additional antihypertensive substance. Written follow‐up information was obtained in half the cases. A total of 2967 cases were analysed, of which 697 were single‐substance exposures. Metoprolol was most frequently reported followed by bisoprolol, atenolol, propranolol and sotalol. Metoprolol showed a linear dose‐symptom relationship, whereas propranolol and sotalol seemed to have a threshold dose beyond which symptoms aggravated. Symptoms did not differ substantially, except for more seizures being reported with propranolol, and more CNS depression/vomiting with sotalol. Activated charcoal was used in 38%, gastric lavage in 11%, temporary pacemaker in 3%, glucagon in 1%, intubation for respiratory insufficiency and cardiopulmonary resuscitation in 1% and 0.5%. All patients recovered. In 174 co‐exposure cases, the distribution of poisoning severity and rate of worsening of symptoms was comparable with single‐substance exposures except one patient deceased after bisoprolol and verapamil co‐exposure. In adults with beta‐blocker overdose, no significant differences in poisoning severity among beta‐blockers were detected, and no fatalities were observed with single‐substance exposures. Background : Exposure is an effective intervention in the treatment of pathological anxiety, but it is insufficiently disseminated. Therapists' negative attitudes towards exposure might be of relevance when considering factors contributing to the non-application of this intervention. Aims : In order to be able to measure concerns in German-speaking therapist populations, the study aimed at validating a German version of the Therapist Beliefs about Exposure Scale. Method : The scale was translated into the German language and validated in a sample of 330 German licensed cognitive behavioural therapists. Results : In the present sample, the mean total score was significantly lower than in the original study including US-American therapists. Confirmatory factor analysis did not confirm the proposed one-factor model, while the exploratory factor analysis indicated that more than one factor is necessary to explain the structure of negative attitudes towards exposure. The internal consistency was high. Higher scores (more negative beliefs) were significantly correlated with older age, holding a master's degree (vs PhD), not being specialized in the treatment of anxiety disorders and with less experience with performance of exposure gained during clinical training. Negative beliefs about exposure were further associated with the self-reported average number of sessions spent on exposure in current treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder and panic disorder, and with negative attitudes towards application of exposure sessions presented in case vignettes. Conclusions : The German adaptation provides the opportunity of measuring concerns regarding application of exposure in German-speaking therapist populations. The efficacy of exposure is beyond doubt, which is reflected in guidelines recommending its application in the treatment of anxiety disorders and post‐traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Research suggests exposure to be underutilized in clinical practice in the United States and Europe. A systematic investigation of the dissemination of exposure in Germany is lacking. The present study examined the dissemination and application frequency of exposure among German cognitive behavioural therapists working in routine care. In an online‐based survey, 331 psychotherapists provided information on treatment of patients with panic disorder, phobia, and PTSD. By means of multinomial logistic regression analysis, application frequency of exposure (non‐users vs. users vs. frequent users) was predicted by various therapist characteristics. Younger age and less negative beliefs about exposure significantly predicted the affiliation to the frequent users group compared to the non‐users in the treatment of panic disorder or phobia. Concerning treatment of PTSD, only negative beliefs about exposure was identified as significant predictor. Sex, educational level, and number of exposure sessions performed during clinical training were not of predictive value. Current findings suggest that negative beliefs about exposure and age impact the frequent provision of exposure to patients. 9H-carbazole is generated from incomplete combustion of diverse fossil fuels and biomass, in tobacco smoke and from industrial processes, while halogenated carbazoles have natural and anthropogenic sources. We analyzed 9H-carbazole and 14 halogenated carbazoles in dust samples from 14 schools, 13 daycare centers, and 13 residences, as well as 5 indoor air samples from residences in Munich, Germany. Overall, we present first data of various carbazoles in different indoor environments without visible combustion sources. The median (95th percentile) values of the halogenated analytes mainly detected in the entire study group were 10.3 ng/g (308 ng/g) for 9H-carbazole, 13.3 ng/g (735 ng/g) for 3,6-dichloro-9H-carbazole, 6.2 ng/g (159 ng/g) for 1,3,6-tribromo-9H-carbazole, and 1.2 ng/g (21.1 ng/g) for 2,7-dibromo-9H-carbazole. For most of the target analytes, the highest concentrations were observed in dust samples from schools, and the lowest were found in residences. In the air samples, all analytes were found only at low levels, with median values of 7.7 pg/m 3 for 9H-carbazole and 6.1 pg/m 3 for 2,3,6,7-tetrachloro-9H-carbazole. For 9H-carbazole, “typical” and “high” non-dietary intake of children through dust ingestion using median and 95th percentile values were calculated to be 0.03 ng/kg b.w. and 1.1 ng/kg b.w. daily, respectively. Due to limited toxicological information and exposure data for other relevant pathways (e.g., dietary intake), the risk assessment is inconclusive. Nevertheless, there are indications that 9H-carbazole has carcinogenic properties and that halogenated carbazoles have dioxin-like toxicities. Therefore, further research is essential. For decades, plasticizers have been produced in high quantities to improve the flexibility and durability of products. One possible replacement product is alkylsulfonic acid phenylesters (ASEs), marketed as Mesamoll®. This study aimed to quantify the ASE dust contamination of residences and daycare centers to obtain insight into the recent exposure situation. ASEs were quantified in dust samples collected from 25 residences and 25 daycare centers using GC/MS measurements. Median (95th percentile) values of the sum of tetra- to heptadecylphenylesters are higher in daycare centers, with a value of 19.6mg/kg (216mg/kg), compared to residences, with a value of 7.6mg/kg (171mg/kg). A daily non-dietary intake of 0.08 and 0.86μg/kg b.w., respectively, was observed using the median and 95th percentile values obtained from dust samples. These levels are 1250 and 115 times below a previously set temporary tolerable daily intake value. The German Environmental Specimen Bank (ESB) continuously collects 24-h urine samples since the early 1980s in Germany. In this study we analyzed 300 urine samples from the years 2007 to 2015 for 21 phthalate metabolites (representing exposure to 11 parent phthalates) and combined the data with two previous retrospective measurement campaigns (1988 to 2003 and 2002 to 2008). The combined dataset comprised 1162 24-h urine samples spanning the years 1988 to 2015. With this detailed set of human biomonitoring data we describe the time course of phthalate exposure in Germany over a time frame of 27 years. For the metabolites of the endocrine disrupting phthalates di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP) and butylbenzyl phthalate (BBzP) we observed a roughly ten-fold decline in median metabolite levels from their peak levels in the late 1980s/early 1990s compared to most recent levels from 2015. Probably, bans (first enacted in 1999) and classifications/labelings (enacted in 2001 and 2004) in the European Union lead to this drop. A decline in di-isobutyl phthalate (DiBP) metabolite levels set in only quite recently, possibly due to its later classification as a reproductive toxicant in the EU in 2009. In a considerable number of samples collected before 2002 health based guidance values (BE, HBM I) have been exceeded for DnBP (27.2%) and DEHP (2.3%) but also in recent samples some individual exceedances can still be observed (DEHP 1.0%). A decrease in concentration for all low molecular weight phthalates, labelled or not, was seen in the most recent years of sampling. For the high molecular weight phthalates, DEHP seems to have been substituted in part by di-isononyl phthalate (DiNP), but DiNP metabolite levels have also been declining in the last years. Probably, non-phthalate alternatives increasingly take over for the phthalates in Germany. A comparison with NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) data from the United States covering the years 1999 to 2012 revealed both similarities and differences in phthalate exposure between Germany and the US. Exposure to critical phthalates has decreased in both countries with metabolite levels more and more aligning with each other, but high molecular weight phthalates substituting DEHP (such as DiNP) seem to become more important in the US than in Germany. Perfluoroalkyl- and polyfluoroalkyl-substances (PFAS) have been detected in many types of environmental media and biota including humans. We determined volatile PFAS, including fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOHs), fluorotelomer acrylates (FTACs), perfluorooctane sulfonamides (FOSAs), and perfluorooctane sulfonamidoethanols (FOSEs), in indoor air of residences and schools in Germany. FTOHs, FTACs, FOSEs, and FOSAs were quantified with median levels in schools (in residences) of 11,783 pg/m 3 (13,198 pg/m 3 ), 737 pg/m 3 (450 pg/m 3 ), 130 pg/m 3 (278 pg/m 3 ), and 243 pg/m 3 (110 pg/m 3 ), respectively. Using our data and previously published results in a simplified model based on the medians and 95th percentiles, the “typical” and “high” daily non-dietary exposures were calculated to be 4.2 ng/kg body weight (9.9 ng/kg b.w.) for Σ-FTOHs and 0.1 ng/kg b.w. (0.8 ng/kg b.w.) for Σ-FOSEs/FOSAs in children. Inhalation was the dominant intake pathway for FTOHs; however, dust ingestion contributed significantly to the total intake of FOSEs/FOSAs. In organisms, 8:2 FTOH is degraded to perfluorooctanoate (PFOA). Assuming that 1% of 8:2 FTOH is converted to PFOA, 8:2 FTOH exposure in Germany has a negligible contribution to the total daily PFOA exposure, which is mainly driven by dietary intake. Flood risk analyses are often estimated assuming the same flood intensity along the river reach under study, i.e. discharges are calculated for a number of return periods T, e.g. 10 or 100 years, at several streamflow gauges. T-year discharges are regionalised and then transferred into T-year water levels, inundated areas and impacts. This approach assumes that (1) flood scenarios are homogeneous throughout a river basin, and (2) the T-year damage corresponds to the T-year discharge. Using a reach at the river Rhine, this homogeneous approach is compared with an approach that is based on four flood types with different spatial discharge patterns. For each type, a regression model was created and used in a Monte- Carlo framework to derive heterogeneous scenarios. Per scenario, four cumulative impact indicators were calculated: (1) the total inundated area, (2) the exposed settlement and industrial areas, (3) the exposed population and 4) the potential building loss. Their frequency curves were used to establish a ranking of eight past flood events according to their severity. The investigation revealed that the two assumptions of the homogeneous approach do not hold. It tends to overestimate event probabilities in large areas. A lot of research has been devoted to explaining immigrants' acquisition of the language of the receiving country. However, less attention has been paid to explaining the acquisition of the heritage language among children of immigrants. The most important determinant for young children is exposure to the language. Language exposure can occur in various contexts, such as within the family, during preschool, through peers or via media. Our empirical analysis therefore explores which of these contexts is most statistically significant for the acquisition of the heritage language among children of Turkish immigrants. Using data from the project Preschool Education and Educational Careers among Migrant Children, we show that all contexts are important at different age levels but the acquisition of the heritage language is mainly determined by the exposure to it within the family. Lead is a highly toxic contaminant with food being the major source of exposure for the general public. The second German food consumption survey (Nationale Verzehrsstudie II - NVS II) with about 20 000 participants (15 371 for dietary history interviews used for this study) allowed for an updated exposure assessment for the German population. Based on these comprehensive data, information on consumption of 545 individual food items by the German population was generated. Lead concentrations in food were compiled from the German food monitoring programme, European countries' authority programmes and the published literature, covering the years from 2000 to 2009, and were multiplied with consumption data to obtain estimates of lead intake from food. Average lead concentrations per main food group were highest for meat(including offal), followed by fish (including seafood), vegetables and cereals. Due to high consumption, beverages contributed most to the intake of the general public, followed by main groups vegetables, fruits & nuts and cereals. Lead intake from food was estimated to be 0.53 and 0.72 µg kg-1 bw and day for average and high-end consumers, respectively. This is close to (average consumers) respectively above (high-end consumers) a reference value derived from a recent health risk evaluation performed by EFSA, using the benchmark approach. Uncertainties in these estimates pertain to the influence of values below the limit of quantification and some foods not considered due to lacking occurrence data. In conclusion, the estimated lead intake of the German population from food is still close to health-based reference values. Further efforts to reduce lead intake are required. Cadmium is a very toxic contaminant with food being the major source of exposure for the general public. Based on these comprehensive data, information on the consumption of 545 individual food items by the German population was generated. Cadmium concentrations in food were compiled from the German food monitoring programme, European countries' authority programmes and the published literature, covering the years from 1993 to 2008, and were multiplied with consumption data to obtain estimates of cadmium intake from food. Consumption-weighted mean cadmium concentrations per main food group were highest for cereals, followed by oily seeds & fruits, and vegetables. Due to both high consumption and considerable occurrence of cadmium, cereals and vegetables contributed most to the intake of the general public, followed by the main groups beverages, fruits & nuts, and dairy products (including milk). Cadmium intake from food was estimated to be 1.46 and 2.35 µg kg-1 bw week-1 for average and high-end consumers, respectively. This corresponds to 58% for average and 95% for high-end consumers, respectively, of a reference value derived from a recent health risk evaluation performed by EFSA, using the benchmark approach. Uncertainties in these estimates pertain to the influence of values below the limit of quantification and some foods not considered due to lacking occurrence data. In conclusion, the estimated cadmium intake of the German population from food is still close to health-based reference values. Further efforts to reduce cadmium intake are required. Purpose: In a potash mine in the center of Germany, stationary measurements 40 cm above ground level have revealed occasional increases in the carbon dioxide (CO) levels that exceed the 0.5 vol.% German occupational exposure limit (OEL). This study, therefore, aimed to examine the individual exposures of potash miners to CO at their underground workplaces. Methods: 119 miners were equipped with personal CO detectors to log the individual CO exposures during underground work. We decided to use electrochemical monitors due to their compactness and minimal mass. Furthermore, generated CO measurements with precipitated overshooting and false positive CO values were studied using diverse CO test gases and different fumigation times. Results: The personal detectors showed short-term CO peak exposures at very high concentrations in a limited number of workers. Twenty-two threshold limit value violations were observed according to the present OEL, and the personal CO monitoring allowed categorization into three exposure groups, low ( n = 83), moderate ( n = 26) and high burdens ( n = 10) of CO. Conclusions: The electrochemical sensors used have numerous properties that can potentially influence the assessment of exposures. The current findings suggest that assessing similar exposure scenarios, with respect to elevated and strongly fluctuating CO concentrations, the behavior of electrochemical sensors should be taken into consideration. Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin and -furan (PCDD/F) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyl (dl-PCB) exposure from food were estimated using new food consumption data from the recent German food consumption survey (Nationale Verzehrsstudie II – NVS II). Based on these comprehensive data, information on the consumption of 545 individual food items by the German population was derived. Concentrations of dioxin-like compounds in food were compiled from the German Food Monitoring Programme (GFMP), the German Dioxin Database, other German authority programmes, European countries’ authority programmes and the published literature covering the years 2000–2010. By multiplication with consumption data, estimates of intake from food were determined. The main food groups contributing most to the intake of the general public aredairy products(including milk),meatandfish(including seafood), followed – due to high consumption – by the main groupvegetables. The combined intake of PCDD/F and dl-PCB (as toxic equivalents – TEQ) from food was estimated to be 2.11/1.53 pg kg–1 bw and day and 3.56/2.85 pg kg–1 bw and day (upper/lower bound) for average and high-end consumers, respectively. The estimated intake of average consumers is close to a reference value derived by the Scientific Committee on Food in 2001. Uncertainties in these estimates pertain to the influence of values below the limit of quantification (upper/lower bound ratio) and some foods not considered due to the lack of contamination data. Abstract: Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are used in a wide variety of products such as electronic devices, upholstery and carpets and in insulation boards. The study presented here aimed to quantify the amounts of BFRs in house dust in Germany. For this purpose 20 residences' dust samples were collected from vacuum cleaner bags and analysed with LC–MS/MS and simultaneously with GC/MS. Using GC/MS, the median (95th percentile) concentrations of PBDEs (sum of tetra- to hepta-congeners), BDE 209, Σ-HBCD (sum of three congeners), and decabromodiphenylethane (DBDPE) were 42ng/g (230ng/g), 950ng/g (3426ng/g), 335ng/g (1545ng/g), and 146ng/g (1059ng/g), respectively. Using LC–MS/MS some “novel” flame retardants were found in median concentrations of 343ng/g (bis(2-ethyl-1-hexyl)tetrabromophthalate, TBPH), and 28ng/g (tetrabromobisphenol A, TBBPA). Whilst 1,2-bis-(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane (BTBPE) and 2-ethyl-1-hexyl-2,3,4,5-tetrabromobenzoate (EH-TBB) could not be detected. Based on these measurements an exposure assessment for the sum of tetra- to heptabrominated congeners, BDE 209, and Σ-HBCD resulted in a “high” daily intake for toddlers (based on 95th percentiles) of 1.2ng/kg b.w., 0.69ng/kg b.w., and 8.9ng/kg b.w., respectively. For TBPH the “high” intake was calculated at 4.1ng/kg b.w. and for DBDPE at 5.3ng/kg b.w. A clear tendency was observed to apply “novel” BFRs in Germany. Moreover, the results suggest that the recent exposure to PBDEs and HBCD via house dust in Germany is well below the levels that are associated with health effects. Background: The purpose of the present study is to introduce an adapted protocol of in vivo exposure for fear avoidant back pain patients and its implementation in the German health care system without multidisciplinary teams. Case studies demonstrated promising effects but three preceding randomized controlled trials (RCTs) could not support the former results. More empirical support is necessary to further substantiate the effectiveness of in vivo exposure. Methods: A total of 108 chronic low back pain patients are randomly assigned to one out of three conditions (A: exposure_long (15 sessions), B: exposure_short (10 sessions) or C: control condition cognitive behavioral therapy (15 sessions)). The inclusion criteria are: back pain ⩾3 months and a sufficient level of fear-avoidance. An effect evaluation, a process evaluation and an economic evaluation are conducted. Primary outcomes are pain-related disability and pain intensity. Secondary outcomes are: emotional distress, fear avoidance, catastrophizing and costs. Data are collected at baseline, upon completion of the intervention, after 10 sessions, and at six months following completion of treatment. Besides the comparison of exposure in vivo and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), we additionally compare a short and a long version of exposure to analyze dose response effects. Discussion: This is, to our knowledge, the first RCT comparing in vivo exposure to psychological treatment as usual in terms of cognitive behavioral therapy. Results will help to find out whether a tailored treatment for fear avoidant back pain patients is more effective than a general pain management treatment. Human biomonitoring measures the internal exposure of humans to chemicals from various sources, such as food, everyday objects, or the air we breathe, by analyzing blood and urine, for example. To promote and coordinate human biomonitoring in Europe, the European Human Biomonitoring Initiative (HBM4EU) was launched in 2017 and involves 30 countries, the European Environment Agency, and the European Commission. The project was completed in June 2022.Comparable and reliable exposure data were collected and consistently assessed for a wide range of environmental chemicals. Other important achievements of the initiative were the establishment of a quality assurance program, a concept for standardizing future HBM studies, a common strategy for deriving health-based guidance values (HBM-GVs), and the establishment of national committees in the partner countries. The exposure data generated are accessible via the Information Platform for Chemical Monitoring (IPCHEM) and the EU HBM Dashboard. Publications are freely available through the HBM4EU online library.Overall, the results show that exposures of the EU population to many chemicals are too high, such as phthalates and perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS), and that policy action is still needed. Abstract: We developed a generic spatio-temporal model to quantify individual exposure to air pollution, using personal activity profiles derived from GPS and diaries, ambient air quality, and an indoor model. To enhance accessibility and reusability, the model approach is deployed as a web service. The model is applied to estimate personal exposure towards PM10 and PM2.5 for ten individuals in Münster, Germany. Modelled daily averages range for PM10 between 17 and 126 and between 6 and 84 μg m−3 for PM2.5. Comparison with personal monitoring data shows good agreement at temporal resolutions from 5 min to one day. Uncertainties in the model results are considerable and increase with higher exposure levels. Large deviations between modelled and measured exposure can often be explained by missing data on indoor emissions or insufficiently detailed activity diaries. The developed model allows the assessment of individual exposure with uncertainties on a high spatio-temporal resolution. By providing the methodology through a web service interface and using generic indoor parameter distributions, the model can be easily transferred to new application areas or could be provided for public use to identify hazardous exposure events. Abstract: The present study was performed to characterise in-stream pesticide exposure within the Palatinate vineyard region in south-west Germany, evaluate the influence of buffer strip widths and identify mitigation measures for the relevant entry pathways. In-stream water and sediment samples that were taken at nine sampling sites of different buffer widths following intense rainfall, and edge-of-field runoff that were sampled in erosion rills were analysed regarding 28 active ingredients of pesticides including copper. In-stream samples contained a mix of 8±4 pesticide compounds, resulting in total pesticide concentrations of 1.4–8.9μgl−1 for water and 16–670μgkg−1 dw for sediment. Following an exceptional rainfall event with a previous 34-day drought period, pesticide concentrations reached 7.0–83.4μgl−1. Fungicides were the most important pesticides found and were significantly correlated with the pesticide application frequency and rate. The calculated toxicity values per sample (TUmax) indicated that both organic pesticides and copper concentrations likely cause ecotoxicological effects in the field. The buffer strip width was of little importance for pesticide in-stream concentrations because pesticide entry occurred mainly via the field path network and erosion rills. Pesticide in-stream concentrations were significantly and positively correlated with the concentrations detected in erosion rills (R 2 =0.56). As possible risk mitigation measures, we suggest the implementation of grassed field paths and vegetated ditches or wetlands. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This study aimed at statistically investigating the association between the internal exposure of children and young adults to uranium (U) and epidemiologically relevant external determinants of exposure. The investigation was performed with data from two studies within the framework of the German health-related environmental monitoring program: The German Environmental Survey for Children (GerES IV) conducted by the Federal Environment Agency ( Umweltbundesamt) with data on 1,780 children 3-14 years of age and their home environment and the German Environmental Specimen Bank ( ESB, section: human specimens) with data on 2,253 students 20-29 years of age. Both studies provided data on the U levels in human urine for all probands. GerES IV furthermore provided an extensive environmental and demographic database on, e.g., U levels in drinking water. The data from GerES IV and ESB were linked by GIS to spatially relevant exposure information, including background values of U in stream sediments and in upper and lower soils, U levels in mosses and particulate matter in the lower atmosphere, precipitation and elevation as well as forest density. Bivariate correlation analysis and two decision tree models showed moderate but significant associations between U in human urine and U levels in drinking water, stream sediments and upper and lower soils. Future investigations considering additional epidemiologically relevant data sets may differentiate the results. Abstract: Spatial planning is considered to be one of the main instruments available to govern adaptation to climate change and climate change impacts in spatial contexts. To meet this challenge spatial planning authorities require information concerning climate change impacts on a regional and local scale level. This paper presents an assessment framework for exploring the impacts of climate change in the context of spatial planning. The framework employs indicators for exposure to climate stimuli and sensitivity to climate change induced impacts. A particular focus was put on producing a comparable classification method with regard to the set of indicators. The application of the framework allows a comprehensive evaluation and comparison of the results for the impacts addressed. The framework was applied at a regional level for the whole of Germany. An indicator based model was developed assessing 11 potential impacts with relevance for the German spatial planning system. Relevant indicators of sensitivity and exposure were compared for a common assessment and spatial analysis of climate change induced potential impacts related to NUTS 3 districts. The impact analysis is applied for three different IPCC greenhouse gas emission scenarios (A2, B1, A1B) and three future periods (2011–2040, 2041–2070, 2071–2100). The assessment provides new information on the spatial distribution of different potential impacts of climate changes in Germany. Abstract: The implementation of a geodata-based probabilistic pesticide exposure assessment for surface waters in Germany offers the opportunity to base the exposure estimation on more differentiated assumptions including detailed landscape characteristics. Since these characteristics can only be estimated using field surveys, water body width and depth, hydrology, riparian buffer strip width, ground vegetation cover, existence of concentrated flow paths, and riparian vegetation were characterised at 104 water body segments in the vineyard region Palatinate (south-west Germany). Water body segments classified as permanent (n=43) had median values of water body width and depth of 0.9m and 0.06m, respectively, and the determined median width:depth ratio was 15. Thus, the deterministic water body model (width=1m; depth=0.3m) assumed in regulatory exposure assessment seems unsuitable for small water bodies in the study area. Only 25% of investigated buffer strips had a dense vegetation cover (>70%) and allow a laminar sheet flow as required to include them as an effective pesticide runoff reduction landscape characteristic. At 77 buffer strips, bordering field paths and erosion rills leading into the water body were present, concentrating pesticide runoff and consequently decreasing buffer strip efficiency. The vegetation type shrubbery (height>1.5m) was present at 57 (29%) investigated riparian buffer strips. According to their median optical vegetation density of 75%, shrubberies may provide a spray drift reduction of 72±29%. Implementing detailed knowledge in an overall assessment revealed that exposure via drift might be 2.4 and via runoff up to 1.6 fold higher than assumed by the deterministic approach. Furthermore, considering vegetated buffer strips only by their width leads to an underestimation of exposure by a factor of as much as four. Our data highlight that the deterministic model assumptions neither represent worst-case nor median values and therefore cannot simply be adopted in a probabilistic approach. The article discusses a study which examined the link between extrapulmonary cancer and radon in 58,000 German uranium miners from 1946 to 2003. The Wismut models used to assess confounding effects of five covariables are also explained. Excess relative risk (ERR) per unit of cumulative radon exposure in Working Level Months (WLM) was computed using internal Poisson regression. The author notes that combined effects of other covariables still need to be investigated.

Background and objective: Nickel is one of the most prevalent causes of contact allergy in the general population. This study focuses on human exposure to airborne nickel and its potential to induce allergic sensitization. Materials and methods: The study group consisted of 309 children at school-starter age living in the West of Germany in the vicinity of two industrial sources and in a rural town without nearby point sources of nickel. An exposure assessment of nickel in ambient air was available for children in the Ruhr district using routinely monitored ambient air quality data and dispersion modelling. Internal nickel exposure was assessed by nickel concentrations in morning urine samples of the children. Results: The observed nickel sensitization prevalence rates varied between 12.6% and 30.7%. Statistically significant associations were showed between exposure to nickel in ambient air and urinary nickel concentration as well as between urinary nickel concentration and nickel sensitization. Furthermore, an elevated prevalence of nickel sensitization was associated with exposure to increased nickel concentrations in ambient air. Conclusion: The observed associations support the assumption that inhaled nickel in ambient air might be a risk factor for nickel sensitization; further studies in larger collectives are necessary. Abstract: Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) are used as flame retardants in a wide variety of products. As part of the Integrated Exposure Assessment Survey (INES), this study aimed to characterize the exposure of an adult German population using duplicate diet samples, which were collected daily over seven consecutive days, and indoor air and house dust measurements. Our study population consisted of 27 female and 23 male healthy subjects, aged 14–60years, all of whom resided in 34 homes in southern Bavaria. In these 34 residences the air was sampled using glass fiber filters and polyurethane foams and the dust was collected from used vacuum cleaner bags. The median (95th percentile) daily dietary intake of six Tetra- to HeptaBDE congeners was 1.2ng/kg b.w. (3.3ng/kg b.w.) or 67.8ng/day (208ng/day) (calculated from the 7-day median values of each study subject). Concentrations in indoor air and dust (cumulative Tri- to DecaBDE congener readings) ranged from 8.2 to 477pg/m³ (median: 37.8pg/m³) and 36.6 to 1580ng/g (median: 386ng/g), respectively. For some congeners, we identified a significant correlation between air and dust levels. The median (95th percentile) blood concentration of total Tetra- to HexaBDE congener readings was 5.6 (13.2)ng/g lipid. No significant sex differences were observed, but higher blood concentrations were found in younger participants. Using a simplified toxicokinetic model to predict the body burden from exposure doses led to results that were of the same order of magnitude as the measured blood concentrations. Based on these measurements and given our exposure assumptions, we estimated for the total tetra- to heptabrominated congener count an average (high) comprehensive total daily intake of 1.2ng/kg b.w. (2.5ng/kg b.w.). Overall, our results suggest that dietary exposure is the dominant intake pathway at least in our study population, responsible for 97% (average intake) and 95% (high intake) of the total intake of an adult population. Abstract: A clinical study, conducted in Germany, compared two methods of estimating exposure to cigarette smoke. Estimates of mouth level exposure (MLE) to nicotine, 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK), pyrene and acrolein were obtained by chemical analysis of spent cigarette filters for nicotine content. Estimates of smoke constituent uptake were achieved by analysis of corresponding urinary biomarkers: for nicotine; total nicotine equivalents (nicotine, cotinine, trans-3′-hydroxycotinine plus their glucuronide conjugates), for NNK; (4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol (NNAL) plus glucuronide, for pyrene; 1-hydroxy pyrene (1-OHP) plus glucuronide and for acrolein; 3-hydroxylpropyl-mercapturic acid (3-HPMA) plus the nicotine metabolite cotinine in plasma and saliva. Two hundred healthy volunteer subjects were recruited; 50 smokers of each of 1–2mg, 4–6mg and 9–10mg ISO tar yield cigarettes and 50 non-smokers (NS). Smokers underwent two periods of home smoking, each followed by residence in a clinic. Smoking was permitted ad libitum, and spent cigarette filters, cigarette consumption data, 24h urine, as well as plasma and saliva samples were collected. Significant correlations (p <0.001) were found between MLE and the relevant biomarker for each smoke constituent. The Pearson correlation coefficients (r) were 0.83 (nicotine), 0.76 (NNK), 0.82 (acrolein) and 0.63 (pyrene). Mean MLE estimates for nicotine, NNK and pyrene showed a dose response in line with ISO tar yield smoked, with 10mg>4mg>1mg, and for acrolein 10mg>4mg>*1mg (where * indicates not significant at 95% confidence level). The mean exposure estimates from biomarkers for nicotine, NNK and acrolein also showed a dose response in line with ISO tar yield with 10mg>4mg>1mg>NS, and for pyrene 10mg>*4mg>1mg>NS. This study shows that estimates of exposure obtained by filter analysis and biomarkers of exposure correlate significantly over a wide range of smoke exposures and that filter analysis may provide a simple and effective alternative to biomarkers for estimating smokers’ exposure. In industrialized nations, human lead exposure has decreased significantly in recent decades. Nevertheless, due to its toxic effects, this heavy metal remains a public health concern with children and adolescents being particularly at risk. In Europe nowadays, oral intake via food and drinking water is the predominant exposure pathway for lead. The objective of the present study was to investigate the association between dietary factors and blood lead (PbB) level of 3- to 17-year-old children and adolescents living in Germany, using data from the fifth German Environmental Health Survey (GerES V) and the Child and Adolescent Health Survey (KiGGS Wave 2). GerES V and KiGGS Wave 2 are two national population-representative studies conducted between 2014 and 2017, including measurement of lead concentrations in blood from 720 children and adolescents aged 3–17 years (mean age = 10.21, SD age = 4.36). Using multiple linear regression, sociodemographic and environmental characteristics as well as dietary factors could be identified as significant exposure determinants of PbB concentrations. Lead intake via domestic tap water was the strongest predictor of elevated PbB levels with 27.6% (p-value<.001) higher concentrations of highest compared to none lead intake via tap water. Other foods which were found to be relevant to PbB levels were meat, fruit, and fruit juice. While meat or fruit consumption were each associated with about 13% (p-value <.05) lower PbB levels, fruit juice drinking was associated with up to 12.2% (p-value =.04) higher PbB levels. In conclusion, results indicate the importance of dietary habits for lead exposure in children and adolescents. To protect vulnerable groups, it is recommended that future research and lead-reducing measures pay more attention to dietary links. The article presents an analysis of radiation doses to fetuses of pregnant crew and air travelers during commercial flights. Some of the particles whose fluence spectra were considered in the analysis include neutrons, protons, photons, electrons and muons. It outlines the estimates for the fetal fluence-to-dose conversion coefficients for cosmic ray radiations. The analysis has revealed that the dose to the fetus can exceed a recommended fetal dose limit of 1 millisievert after 10 round trips on commercial flights between Toronto, Ontario and Frankfurt, Germany.

We analysed urine samples from the 2001/2002 pilot study of the German Environmental Survey on Children (GerES IV) for the concentrations of the di-n-butylphthalate (DnBP) metabolite mono-n-butylphthalate (MnBP) and the butlybenzylphthalate (BBzP) metabolite mono-benzyl-phthalate (MBzP). The study population consisted of 239 children (106 boys, 133 girls) aged between 2 and 14 years (median 8.5 years). We applied two calculation models to estimate the daily intake for the two parent phthalates from metabolite excretion. One was based on the creatinine-related metabolite concentrations; the other was based on the volume-related metabolite concentrations. Median urinary metabolite concentrations were 174 μg/l (136 μg/g creatinine) for MnBP and 19.7 μg/l (15.3 μg/g creatinine) for MBzP. Such levels have been determined in German children before. Compared to the USA, German median MnBP levels were about 3–10 times higher, whereas MBzP levels were in the same range. Median daily intakes calculated with the creatinine-based model were 4.07 (range: 0.66–76.4; 95th percentile: 14.9) μg/kg body weight (bw)/day for DnBP and 0.42 (range: 0.06–13.9; 95th percentile: 2.57) μg/kg bw/day for BBzP. Daily intakes calculated with the volume-based model were approximately two times higher with a median of 7.61 (range: 0.91–110; 95th percentile: 30.5) μg/kg bw/day for DnBP and a median of 0.77 (range: 0.05–31.3; 95th percentile: 4.48) μg/kg bw/day for BBzP. Using the creatinine model, 28 (11.7%) of the 239 children exceeded the TDI for DnBP of 10 μg/kg bw/day defined by the European Union. Employing the volume model, 89 (37.2%) children exceeded the TDI. For BBzP, no preventive limit values (TDI or RfD) were exceeded. For both phthalates and independent of the model, we found increasing daily intakes with decreasing age. Abstract: Organophosphorus pesticides and pyrethroids are widely used in German agriculture and residential settings. Their occurrence in human biological samples can be used as an indicator for the exposure of children to these compounds. Using multivariate evaluation the routes of exposure can be identified. In the pilot study of GerES IV, metabolites of pyrethroids and organophosporus pesticides were analysed in urine of children aged 2–17 years ( and 363). The 95th percentiles for the metabolites of the pyrethroids in urine were: cis-DCCA 0.74μg/l, trans-DCCA 1.7μg/l, DBCA 0.52μg/l, F-PBA<0.1μg/l, and 3-PBA 2.4μg/l. 3-PBA was detected in 90% of the samples. The 95th percentiles for the organophosphorus metabolites in urine were: DMP 118μg/l, DEP 20μg/l, DMTP 124μg/l, DETP 11μg/l, DMDTP 11μg/l, DEDTP<1.0μg/l. DMTP was the metabolite most frequently detected in the samples (90%). Based on the metabolites analysed in urine the exposure to organophosphorus pesticides is mainly influenced by age, consumption of fresh fruits and fruit juice, living in an urban area, and season. A rough estimation revealed that the ADI values for organophosphorus pesticides might be exceeded. However, these results require further exploration. The exposure to pyrethroids is influenced by age, sampling location, consumption of boiled vegetables, and the use of biocides indoors at home. In addition, a significant correlation between permethrin in house dust and the metabolite concentrations in urine could be observed. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) has been used for the determination of 232Th and 238U in urine of unexposed Jordanian subjects living in six cities. The range of 232Th excretion in all subjects was found to be 1.4–640 μBq d−1 with an average of 34.8 μBq d−1 (geometric mean 15.8 μBq d−1). Results showed no statistically significant correlation with age and residential area. The average value obtained is in agreement with levels considered normal in some recent publications. The average value of 238U in all samples was found to be 3955 μBq d−1 (geometric mean 1107 μBq d−1), which is higher than reported figures from Germany and India, but in agreement with those figures given in ICRP publication, number 23. The mean values of the different groups were found to be proportional to age up to 60 years. A noticeable drop is observed for subjects greater than 60 years old. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

In this paper, we present the estimation of surface NO 2 concentrations over Germany using a machine learning approach. TROPOMI satellite observations of tropospheric NO 2 vertical column densities (VCDs) and several meteorological parameters are used to train the neural network model for the prediction of surface NO 2 concentrations. The neural network model is validated against ground-based in situ air quality monitoring network measurements and regional chemical transport model (CTM) simulations. Neural network estimation of surface NO 2 concentrations show good agreement with in situ monitor data with Pearson correlation coefficient (R) of 0.80. The results also show that the machine learning approach is performing better than regional CTM simulations in predicting surface NO 2 concentrations. We also performed a sensitivity analysis for each input parameter of the neural network model. The validated neural network model is then used to estimate surface NO 2 concentrations over Germany from 2018 to 2020. Estimated surface NO 2 concentrations are used to investigate the spatio-temporal characteristics, such as seasonal and weekly variations of NO 2 in Germany. The estimated surface NO 2 concentrations provide comprehensive information of NO 2 spatial distribution which is very useful for exposure estimation. We estimated the annual average NO 2 exposure for 2018, 2019 and 2020 is 15.53, 15.24 and 13.27 µ g/m 3 , respectively. While the annual average NO 2 concentration of 2018, 2019 and 2020 is only 12.79, 12.60 and 11.15 µ g/m 3 . In addition, we used the surface NO 2 data set to investigate the impacts of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on ambient NO 2 levels in Germany. In general, 10–30% lower surface NO 2 concentrations are observed in 2020 compared to 2018 and 2019, indicating the significant impacts of a series of restriction measures to reduce the spread of the virus. Parabens are antimicrobial preservatives used in a wide range of consumer products such as personal care products, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and food. Consequently, the general population is ubiquitously exposed to these substances via dermal absorption, ingestion, and inhalation. Parabens promote estrogenic activity and are hence under assessment as endocrine disrupting substances. Urine samples from 3- to 17-year-old children and adolescents (N = 516) living in Germany were analysed for concentrations of nine parabens in the population representative German Environmental Survey for Children and Adolescents 2014–2017 (GerES V). Detection rates and urinary concentrations of the parabens decreased with increasing length of the alkyl chain. Methyl paraben was quantified in 97% of the samples with a geometric mean (GM) concentration of 7.724 μg/L (6.714 μg/g creatinine), ethyl paraben was quantified in 69% (GM: 0.943 μg/L and 0.825 μg/g crea), and n -propyl paraben in 31% (GM: 0.563 μg/L and 0.493 μg/g crea). Concentrations of iso -propyl paraben, butyl paraben, iso -butyl paraben, and benzyl paraben were below the limit of quantification in most samples. Pentyl paraben and heptyl paraben were not detected in any of the samples. Paraben concentrations in urine were found to be associated with frequent usage of leave-on personal care products and cosmetics. Cumulative exposure to parabens (back-calculated daily intakes, expressed as hazard index) was found to be on a level raising concern in up to 14% of the population, mainly driven by n -propyl paraben, and depending on the level of conservativeness and point-of departures used for calculation. • First representative exposure data on nine parabens for 3-17-year-olds in Germany. • Ubiquitous exposure of children and adolescents to several parabens. • Leave-on cosmetics associated with higher paraben exposure than rinse-off products. • Hazard index exceeding 1 in up to 14% of the population. • Lower exposure in Germany than in the US, Canada, and South Korea. N -methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and its substitute N -ethyl-2-pyrrolidone (NEP) are aprotic solvents used in many technical applications, but also in carpets, and consumer products such as cleaning agents, and cosmetics. NMP and NEP are classified as reproductive toxicants. As a substance of very high concern (SVHC), NMP is included in the European REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation of Chemicals) candidate list for authorisation. NMP and NEP metabolites were measured in more than 2100 urine samples of 3- to 17-year-old children and adolescents, participating in the population-representative German Environmental Survey for Children and Adolescents 2014–2017 (GerES V). The two NMP metabolites 5-hydroxy- N -methyl-2-pyrrolidone (5-HNMP) and 2-hydroxy- N -methylsuccinimide (2-HMSI) could be detected and quantified in all urine samples, and the two NEP metabolites 5-hydroxy- N -ethylpyrrolidone (5-HNEP) and 2-hydroxy- N -ethylsuccinimide (2-HESI) in 32% and 87% of the urine samples. Geometric mean concentrations were 103.1 µg/L (88.21 µg/g creatinine) for the sum of NMP metabolites and 11.86 µg/L (10.15 µg/g creatinine) for the sum of NEP metabolites, thus remaining below the current health-based human biomonitoring values. For NMP, highest exposure was found in young children, but exposure pathways could not be revealed. Exposure to NEP was highest in adolescents and participants with low socio-economic status or migration background. Associations to usage of personal care products suggested the choice of products to have a distinct impact on NEP exposure. The presented data can be used by the German Human Biomonitoring Commission to derive new reference values (RV95) for NMP and NEP for children and adolescents in Germany. The UV filter 4-methylbenzylidene camphor (4-MBC), used in cosmetics, the antioxidant butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), used inter alia as a food additive and in cosmetics, and the plasticizer tris(2-ethylhexyl) trimellitate (TOTM), used mainly in medical devices as substitute for di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), are suspected to have endocrine disrupting effects. Human biomonitoring methods that allow for assessing the internal exposure of the general population to these substances were recently developed in a German cooperation to enhance the use of human biomonitoring. First-morning void urine samples from 3- to 17-year-old children and adolescents living in Germany were analysed for metabolites of 4-MBC (N = 447), BHT (N = 2091), and TOTM (N = 431) in the population-representative German Environmental Survey on Children and Adolescents 2014–2017 (GerES V). 4-MBC metabolites were found in quantifiable amounts only in single cases and exposure levels remained well below health-based guidance values. In contrast, ubiquitous exposure to BHT became evident with a geometric mean (GM) urinary concentration of the metabolite BHT acid of 2.346 μg/L (1.989 μg/g creatinine) and a maximum concentration of 248 μg/L (269 μg/g crea). The highest GM concentration was found in young children aged 3–5 years, yet no specific sources of exposure could be identified. Also, TOTM metabolites were found in quantifiable amounts only in very few samples. None of these findings could be related to previous hospital treatment or exposure via house dust. Benzene and acrylamide are carcinogenic substances contained inter alia in tobacco smoke. The mercapturic acid metabolites of benzene, N -acetyl- S -phenyl-L-cysteine (SPMA), and of acrylamide, N -acetyl- S -(3-amino-3-oxopropyl)-cysteine (AAMA) and N -acetyl- S -(3-amino-2-hydroxy-3-oxopropyl)-cysteine (GAMA), were analysed in 2260 first-morning void urine samples from children and adolescents aged 3–17 years, participating in the population-representative German Environmental Survey on Children and Adolescents, GerES V 2014–2017. SPMA was detected in 98% of the participants with a geometric mean (GM) of 0.097 μg/L urine. Smokers had about 10-fold higher levels of the benzene metabolite SPMA than non-smokers. The sample comprises of 48 self-reported smokers, mainly in the oldest age group (14-17-year-olds). Second-hand smoke exposure, living near busy or very busy roads, and using domestic fuels for heating were additionally associated with higher benzene metabolite levels. SPMA levels in GerES V were lower compared to levels found in other countries, which in part however may reflect different proportions of smokers. The acrylamide metabolites AAMA and GAMA were detected in 100% of the participants with a GM of 72.6 μg/L urine for AAMA and 15.0 μg/L urine for GAMA. Smoking children and adolescents had about 2.5-fold higher AAMA levels than non-smoking ones. The frequency of consumption of french-fried potatoes and potato crisps consumption was also positively associated with urinary AAMA and GAMA levels. Compared to the urinary AAMA and GAMA levels in Germany and other countries, levels in GerES V tended to be higher than in the few studies reported. The urinary levels of the benzene biomarker SPMA, and the acrylamide biomarkers AAMA and GAMA build the basis to derive reference values for the exposure of children and adolescents in Germany. The results reveal options for exposure reduction mainly in personal choices regarding smoking and diet, but also requiring policy to maintain efforts in non-smoking regulations and improving ambient air quality. The synthetic fragrance 2-(4-tert-butylbenzyl)propionaldehyde, also known as lysmeral, butylphenyl methylpropional, lilial, or lily aldehyde, is widely used in cosmetics, personal care products, laundry detergents, and air fresheners. It is classified as suspected to be harmful to fertility and possibly endocrine disrupting. Its maximum concentration in cosmetics is limited. First-morning void urine samples (N = 2133) were analysed for several metabolites of lysmeral (Chemical Abstract Service (CAS) No.: 80-54-6). Samples were collected in the population-representative German Environmental Survey for Children and Adolescents 2014-2017 (GerES V) from German residents aged 3-17 years. Four main metabolites tert-butylbenzoic acid, lysmerol, lysmerylic acid, and hydroxy-lysmerylic acid were found in quantifiable amounts in 100%, 99%, 40%, and 23% of the samples, respectively, with geometric mean concentrations of 10.21 μg/L (8.658 μg/gcrea) for tert-butylbenzoic acid, 1.528 μg/L (1.296 μg/gcrea) for lysmerol, and below the limit of quantification of 0.2 μg/L and 0.4 μg/L for lysmerylic acid and hydroxy-lysmerylic acid, respectively. Girls had higher urinary concentrations of lysmeral metabolites than boys. Usage of fragrances, fabric softener, and personal care products, especially perfume, was positively associated with urinary concentrations of lysmeral metabolites. Source identification builds a basis to derive proposals for reduction of exposure. These results can also provide the foundation for developing reference values for urinary metabolite concentrations of lysmeral in children and adolescents in Germany that will facilitate recognising future exposure trends. Dechloranes, like Dechlorane Plus® are commonly used flame retardants identified by the EU as substances of very high concern (SVHC) because of their persistence and bioaccumulation potential. To characterize the dechlorane exposure of Germans in the last two decades, 180 archived blood plasma samples of the German Environmental Specimen Bank (students aged 20-29 years) collected at six time points between 1995 and 2017 were analyzed for four dechloranes; namely Dechlorane Plus® (syn- and anti-DDC-CO), dechlorane 602 (DDC-DBF), and dechlorane 603 (DDC-Ant). These were quantified using a GC-MS/MS method. Overall, anti- and syn-DDC-CO were detected in 88% and 98% of the samples, whereas DDC-DBF and DDC-Ant were found in 40% and 37% of the samples, respectively. The median (95th percentile) values were 1.0 ng/g lipid weight (l.w.) (3.0 ng/g l.w.). for anti-DDC-CO, 0.6 ng/g l.w (1.9 ng/g l.w.). for syn-DDC-CO, 0.1 ng/g l.w (0.6 ng/g l.w.). for DDC-DBF, and 0.1 ng/g l.w (0.2 ng/g l.w.). for DDC-Ant. The 95th percentile concentrations of the sum of syn- and anti-DDC-CO decreased from 4.2 ng/g l.w. in 1995, to 2.9 ng/g l.w. in 1999, and subsequently increased to 3.7 ng/g l.w. in 2008, and up to 5.9 ng/g l.w. in 2017. A statistically significant decrease with time was observed for DDC-DBF and DDC-Ant, but not for DDC-CO. Our medians found in blood samples in 2017 are similar to those observed in Germany in 2013/14, but higher compared to values reported in other European countries. 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole (2-MBT) is widely used as a vulcanisation accelerator and is contained in many products made from natural rubber, e.g. car tires. Additionally, it is used as a fungicide in paint or fibre. Systemically human exposure to 2-MBT can occur via dermal and oral uptake or inhalation. Locally, 2-MBT can cause skin sensitisation. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified 2-MBT as probably carcinogenic to humans. 516 urine samples of 3- to 17-year-old children and adolescents living in Germany were analysed for the concentration of 2-MBT in the population representative German Environmental Survey for Children and Adolescents 2014-2017 (GerES V). 2-MBT was quantified above the limit of quantification (LOQ) of 1.0 μg/L in 50% of the 516 samples analysed. The geometric mean of urinary 2-MBT concentration was 1.018 μg/L and 0.892 μg/gcreatinine, the arithmetic mean was 1.576 μg/L (1.351 μg/gcrea). The median concentration was below the LOQ. Analyses of subgroups revealed higher 2-MBT concentrations in children aged 3-5 years compared to 14- to 17-year-old adolescents. All urinary 2-MBT concentrations were well below the health-based guidance value HBM-I for children of 4.5 μg/L. Therefore, current exposure levels are - according to current knowledge - not of concern. For the first time, reference values can be derived for 2-MBT for children and adolescents in Germany. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) mainly originate from incomplete combustion of organic materials and are, among other sources, found in traffic emissions, smoked or barbecued food, leafy vegetables, and tobacco smoke. Some PAH or their metabolites are hazardous for health and classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic to reproduction. Urine samples from 3- to 17-year-old children and adolescents living in Germany were analysed for concentrations of metabolites of the PAH fluorene, naphthalene, phenanthrene, and pyrene in the population-representative German Environmental Survey for Children and Adolescents GerES V (2014-2017). PAH metabolites were analysed in urine samples of 516 participants and could be quantified in 88-100% of the samples. Geometric mean concentrations were: 0.785 μg/L (0.688 μg/gcreatinine) for 1-OH-naphthalene, 4.233 μg/L (3.706 μg/gcrea) for 2-OH-naphthalene, 0.139 μg/L (0.122 μg/gcrea) for 1-OH-phenanthrene, 0.085 μg/L (0.075 μg/gcrea) for 2-OH-phenanthrene, 0.131 μg/L (0.115 μg/gcrea) for 3-OH-phenanthrene, 0.045 μg/L (0.040 μg/gcrea) for 4-OH-phenanthrene, 0.058 μg/L (0.050 μg/gcrea) for 9-OH-phenanthrene, 0.511 μg/L (0.448 μg/gcrea) for Σ-OH-phenanthrene, and 0.099 μg/L (0.087 μg/gcrea) for 1-OH-pyrene. Analyses of subgroups revealed higher PAH metabolite concentrations in young children compared to adolescents, and also in residents of former East Germany compared to those living in former West Germany. Increased urinary PAH metabolite concentrations were found in participants using domestic fuel for heating or gas for cooking. Plastic objects were identified as another potential source of exposure. Urinary concentrations of naphthalene and fluorene metabolites were elevated in active smokers and to the same extent in non-smokers exposed to passive smoking. Comparison with previous cycles of GerES revealed a decrease over time and a further decline in the still significant differences in urinary PAH metabolite concentrations of participants living in former East versus West Germany. During the population representative German Environmental Survey of Children and Adolescents (GerES V, 2014-2017) 2256 first-morning void urine samples from 3 to 17 years old children and adolescents were analysed for 21 metabolites of 11 different phthalates (di-methyl phthalate (DMP), di-ethyl phthalate (DEP), butylbenzyl phthalate (BBzP), di-iso-butyl phthalate (DiBP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP), di-cyclohexyl phthalate (DCHP), di-n-pentyl phthalate (DnPeP), di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), di-iso-nonyl phthalate (DiNP), di-iso-decyl phthalate (DiDP) and di-n-octyl phthalate (DnOP)). Metabolites of DMP, DEP, BBzP, DiBP, DnBP, DEHP, DiNP and DiDP were found in 97%-100% of the participants, DCHP and DnPeP in 6%, and DnOP in none of the urine samples. Geometric means (GM) were highest for metabolites of DiBP (MiBP: 26.1 μg/L), DEP (MEP: 25.8 μg/L), DnBP (MnBP: 20.9 μg/L), and DEHP (cx-MEPP: 11.9 μg/L). For all phthalates but DEP, GMs were consistently higher in the 3-5 years old children than in the 14-17 years old adolescents. For DEHP, the age differences were most pronounced. All detectable phthalate biomarker concentrations were positively associated with the levels of the respective phthalate in house dust. In GerES V we found considerably lower phthalate biomarker levels than in the preceding GerES IV (2003-2006). GMs of biomarker levels in GerES V were only 18% (BBzP), 23% (MnBP), 23% (DEHP), 29% (MiBP) and 57% (DiNP) of those measured a decade earlier in GerES IV. However, some children and adolescents still exceeded health-based guidance values in the current GerES V. 0.38% of the participants had levels of DnBP, 0.08% levels of DEHP and 0.007% levels of DiNP which were higher than the respective health-based guidance values. Accordingly, for these persons an impact on health cannot be excluded with sufficient certainty. The ongoing and substantial exposure of vulnerable children and adolescents to many phthalates confirms the need of a continued monitoring of established phthalates, whether regulated or not, as well as of potential substitutes. With this biomonitoring approach we provide a picture of current individual and cumulative exposure developments and body burdens to phthalates, thus providing support for timely and effective chemicals policies and legislation. Background: Lead pipes have been used in drinking water installations for a long time. Only since 1973 have their use in new buildings been strongly discouraged; nevertheless, they are still found in old buildings. Furthermore, lead-containing alloys are still used today in components such as fittings. This results in an avoidable pollution of drinking water. The health significance of this pollution is acknowledged by a reduction of the currently valid limit value from 10 µg/l to 5 µg/l by the new EU drinking water directive passed in 2020. This directive provides for a transition period of 15 years., Objectives: The relevance of a stricter limit value for lead in drinking water will be evaluated based by the results of routine analyses, and the necessary public health measures to prevent exposure of vulnerable groups will be formulated., Material and Methods: A retrospective analysis of routine samples from the city of Bonn, which an accredited drinking water laboratory had examined in the years 1997-2019, was performed., Results: Of the 16,060 samples analyzed, 75.36% were below the quantitative limit of quantification. The median of the quantifiable samples was above the future limit for lead in drinking water in each year considered. No effect of the last transition period of 10 years (2003-2013) could be detected., Discussion: Even though no systematic studies on lead pollution in German municipalities are available, the subject is still highly topical. Lead exposure from drinking water installations is a completely avoidable health risk, but it can only be regulated by consistent enforcement of the applicable rules by the health authorities. The health authorities must be adequately equipped in terms of personnel, material, and financial resources.

Recent studies have reported interspecific differences in how bee species respond to various stressors. Evaluating the exposure and responses of different bee species to plant protection products is considered an essential part of their risk assessment. This study was conducted to assess the impacts of thiacloprid-prochloraz mixture on buff-tailed bumblebees (Bombus terrestris) and red mason bees (Osmia bicornis) in a worst-case scenario under semi-field conditions. Bumblebee colonies or solitary bee trap nests were confined in tunnels with flowering oilseed rape. The recommended maximum application rates of 72 g thiacloprid/ha and 675 g prochloraz/ha were applied as a tank mixture during bee flight in full flowering oilseed rape. Several parameters such as flight and foraging activity, population parameters, and exposure level were investigated. Our results show adverse effects of the combination of thiacloprid and prochloraz on the reproductive performance of red mason bees. The number of cocoons produced by O. bicornis was significantly reduced in the treatment compared to the control group. Regarding bumblebees, we found no effects of the thiacloprid-prochloraz mixture on any observed parameters of colony development. The maximum detected concentrations of both active substances three days after application were higher in O. bicornis pollen mass compared to B. terrestris stored pollen. We conclude that this worst-case scenario of thiacloprid-prochloraz exposure poses a high risk to solitary bees and thus the use of such mixture should be restricted.

Environmental conditions influence human health and interact with other factors such as DNA, lifestyle, or the social environment. Earth observations from space provide data on the most diverse manifestations of these environmental conditions and make it possible to quantify them spatially. Using two examples - the availability of open and recreational space and the spatial distribution of air pollution - this article presents the potential of Earth observations for health studies. In addition, possible applications for health-related issues are discussed. To this end, we try to outline key points for an interdisciplinary approach that meets the conceptual, data technology, and ethical challenges.

Background: Plant poisoning in small children (from 0.5 to <6 years of age) is the third most frequent cause for phone contact with a poison center. For prevention of poisonings, a list of poisonous plants that should not be planted close to playgrounds or other places frequently visited by children was published in 2000 by the Bundesanzeiger. This list has been reevaluated and updated by the "Toxicity of Plants" working group of the Committee of the Assessment of Intoxications at the Federal Institute of Risk Assessment (BfR)., Materials and Methods: Relevant plants were taken from a recent publication. A literature search was conducted in PubMed concerning all plant poisonings in children and the toxic ingredients of plants. Also, monographs and the database POISINDEX were integrated in the evaluation. A classification was made for plants that after oral, dermal, or ocular contact of small quantities could cause severe, moderate, mild, or no intoxications in small children., Results: Based on data of exposure and potentially toxic ingredients of the involved plants, a risk assessment was executed, which diverges from other publications because it concerns the actual basic risk of an intoxication. In total, 251 plants were reevaluated. For 11 plants, there was a high risk, for 32 a moderate, for 115 a mild, and for 93 plants no risk of intoxication could be determined., Conclusion: The new assessment of evaluating a toxicity risk for small children on the basis of exposure data and including the toxicity of ingredients allows for a more realistic assessment of the risk of poisoning with outdoor plants. In this way, infant exposure carrying a high risk of intoxication can be identified.
