Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly used in wildlife surveying, including estimation of population densities. It is essential that we evaluate and test new survey methods to guide optimal sampling strategies. This study aimed to assess the accuracy of using a UAV‐mounted thermal infrared (TIR) camera to count red deer Cervus elaphus populations, and how this was influenced by flight season, height and velocity, in order to help guide future census design. We flew 57 flights across a captive population of red deer in a 13 ha deer park enclosure of semi‐natural habitat, representative of the species' range in northern Germany. Flights and image assessments were performed with no prior knowledge of actual population size. Accuracy was quantified by comparing real population size (known only to deer park staff) and independently estimated population sizes from UAV TIR images. Accuracy was significantly influenced by ecological season (early and late winter, spring and early summer) and height. Across all seasons, lower flights (100 m) performed better than higher ones (120 m), with lower flights in early winter and early summer being on average accurate to within 1% of actual population counts. For the season where we had the largest range of temperatures between flights (late winter) we found that accuracy was highest when temperatures were lowest. Flights were also able to identify all five stags (defined as a male deer ≥ 2 years old) present in early summer, but not in spring. Deer appeared to avoid the landing/take‐off area, but there were no noted behavioural responses to drones flying over animals when at constant height and velocity during surveys. Our results indicate that UAV‐mounted TIR camera have the potential to accurately count populations of large ungulate species, but that flight season, height and potentially temperature need to be taken into account to maximise accuracy. The method of choice for treatment of sacral chordomas is en bloc tumor removal via sacrectomy or sacral amputation in varying degrees depending on the initial tumor extent. Besides local tumor control, the preservation of neurological function is equally important to minimize postoperative bladder and bowel dysfunction. Removal of sacral tumors is complicated by the complex regional anatomy of the pelvis and the surrounding visceral and retroperitoneal structures. We aim to describe the surgical workflow for a fully navigated high sacral amputation facilitated by integration of an intraoperative computed tomography (iCT)-based spinal navigation system. An iCT-based spinal navigation system (AIRO® CT scanner, Brainlab AG, Feldkirchen, Germany) was used to perform intraoperative navigation with an image-guidance system and infrared tracking camera (BrainLab CurveTM, Brainlab AG, Feldkirchen, Germany) in combination with the spinal navigation set by Brainlab (Brainlab AG, Feldkirchen, Germany) to perform a fully navigated high sacral amputation. We demonstrate the successful implementation of iCT-based spinal navigation during high sacral amputation and the key advantages of this technique throughout the surgery. iCT-based spinal navigation is a useful complementing technique for en bloc high sacral amputations that renders the surgery safer and more accurate. Purpose: This article investigates the qualities and thermal effects of a novel electrosurgical device (PT) which has been designed by ERBE Elektromedizin GmbH, Germany, for the preparation of critical locations such as in skin-sparing or nipple-sparing techniques and compares it to a standard device (SD) in a porcine ex vivo breast model using an heat map generated by infrared thermography.Methods: In total, 42 abdominal wall specimens of porcine tissue consisting of the skin and the underlying subcutaneous and muscle layer were alternately dissected using one of the devices and pre-settings. During the preparation with the two devices, the epicutaneous temperature was measured by an infrared camera (VarioCam, Jenoptik, Germany) and the maximum temperature as well as the slope of the temperature rise was analysed.Results: The use of PT shows significantly lower values for [Formula: see text] compared to SD. This effect was independent from the chosen mode. Using the same instrument in different modes, the use of AutoCut mode showed a significant reduction of [Formula: see text] at all indicated time points (SD: p < 0.0001 and PT: p < 0.0001). In summary, the combination of AutoCut + PT showed the lowest rise in temperature, whereas the combination of DryCut + SD led to the highest rise in temperature. The temperature difference between these two settings was 13.84 °C, which means a possible temperature reduction of 67% can be achieved by the right choice of device and its tailored mode.Conclusions: The novel PT shows a significant reduction in epicutaneous temperature and a significant reduction of the slope of temperature rise most probably by a more focused application of energy compared to SD. The article offers information on the use of aerial surveys combined with computer-linked thermal infrared cameras to monitor ungulates and identify specific species with high-resolution colour images. The authors used this method in three German national parks and a German/French biosphere reserve and demonstrates that the non-invasive method is cost-effective and is applicable to various landscapes.

Knowledge about laminar–turbulent transition on operating multi megawatt wind turbine (WT) blades needs sophisticated equipment like hot films or microphone arrays. Contrarily, thermographic pictures can easily be taken from the ground, and temperature differences indicate different states of the boundary layer. Accuracy, however, is still an open question, so that an aerodynamic glove, known from experimental research on airplanes, was used to classify the boundary-layer state of a 2 megawatt WT blade operating in the northern part of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. State-of-the-art equipment for measuring static surface pressure was used for monitoring lift distribution. To distinguish the laminar and turbulent parts of the boundary layer (suction side only), 48 microphones were applied together with ground-based thermographic cameras from two teams. Additionally, an optical camera mounted on the hub was used to survey vibrations. During start-up (SU) (from 0 to 9 rpm), extended but irregularly shaped regions of a laminar-boundary layer were observed that had the same extension measured both with microphones and thermography. When an approximately constant rotor rotation (9 rpm corresponding to approximately 6 m/s wind speed) was achieved, flow transition was visible at the expected position of 40% chord length on the rotor blade, which was fouled with dense turbulent wedges, and an almost complete turbulent state on the glove was detected. In all observations, quantitative determination of flow-transition positions from thermography and microphones agreed well within their accuracy of less than 1%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
