Nowadays, citizens collaborate increasingly with scientists in citizen science (CS) projects on environmental issues. CS projects often have educational goals and aim to increase citizens' knowledge with the ultimate goal of fostering positive attitudes toward science. To date, little is known about the extent to which CS projects strengthen the positive interrelationship between knowledge and attitudes. Based on previous research, it has been suggested that the knowledge-attitude relationship could be further examined by focusing on different aspects: (1) different attitudinal domains, (2) topic-specific knowledge, and (3) its direction. Our study contributes to the clarification of the interrelation between scientific knowledge and attitudes toward science within the specific domain of urban wildlife ecology using cross-lagged panel analyses. We collected survey data on five attitudinal domains, topic-specific knowledge, scientific reasoning abilities, and epistemological beliefs from N = 303 participants before and after they participated in a CS project on urban wildlife ecology. Participants collected and analyzed data on terrestrial mammals in a German metropolitan city. Our results provide evidence for the relationship between knowledge and attitudes due to the topic-specificity of knowledge in CS projects (e.g., wildlife ecology). Our method provided a rigorous assessment of the direction of the knowledge-attitude relationship and showed that topic-specific knowledge was a predictor of more positive attitudes toward science.

Abstract: Presently known tick-borne diseases in Germany include Lyme borreliosis, tick-borne encephalitis (TBE-virus, western subtype), Q-fever, babesiosis and presumably ehrlichiosis. Blood samples of 4,368 forestry workers in the State of Baden-Wuerttemberg (B-W), southwestern Germany, were tested for the presence of antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, TBE-virus and Ehrlichia spp. (genogroup E. phagocytophila). Furthermore 12,327 ticks (Ixodes ricinus) collected in various areas of B-W were analysed by PCR and genotyping for the prevalence of pathogen RNA and DNA. The human seroprevalence rates of antibodies to B. burgdorferi sensu lato ranged from 18 % to 52 %, for TBE-virus from 0 % to 43 % and for Ehrlichia spp. from 5 % to 16 % in various counties of the State. The foci of B. burgdorferi and TBE-virus as indicated by antibody prevalence in humans are only partly overlapping with each other. The highest rates of TBE-virus antibodies are in concordance with available clinical data. However antibody prevalence up to 27 % in areas with no reports of clinical cases was found, suggesting that TBE occurs throughout the State of B-W, The prevalence of Ehrlichia spp. antibodies suggests that ehrlichiosis plays a role as a tick-borne disease in Germany, but as long as no clinical data are available, this will remain unclear. Investigations of ticks for TBE-virus (n = 9,189) by nested PCR showed prevalence rates from 0% to 2.3% and for Ehrlichia spp. (n = 1,963) from 2.6% to 3.1%. Examination of ticks (n = 3,138) for the presence of B. burgdorferi sensu lato DNA was performed by PCR and revealed prevalence rates from 13.9% up to 24%. Furthermore 1,106 samples positive for B. burgdorferi sensu lato were used for genotyping. B. afzelii DNA was found in 407 ticks (36.8%), followed by B. garinii (21.9 %), B. valaisiana (13.7%), and B. burgdorferi sensu stricto (9.9 %). Double infection was found in 6.4% and triple infection in 0.8% of the ticks. 10.5% of the positive samples could not be classified. Prevention of tick-borne diseases has to focus on behavioural intervention to reduce individual tick exposure by proper behaviour in the environment, as a large-scale control of the tick population seems impossible and thus reduction of Lyme borreliosis and TBE through tick control is unlikely. Vaccination against TBE-virus should not only be recommended for high endemic areas but also for persons with a high individual risk. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: During an outbreak of Q fever at a farmer''s market in Soest (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) in 2003, we examined 263 serum samples of presumably infected persons for Q fever antibodies. One hundred and seventy-one of these patients were tested positive for acute Q fever infection. Furthermore, 29 persons of certain risk groups like pregnant women () or patients with valvular heart disease () were examined. Among these, in four pregnant women and two heart patients an acute but asymptomatic infection could be diagnosed. With 30 patients we performed a serological follow-up for 8–60 weeks. In our study, phase 2 (PH2)-IgM antibodies as a marker for acute infection were present in all 30 patients 3–4 weeks after onset of clinical signs and disappeared 3–4 months later. Six weeks to three months after clinical manifestation, all patients developed PH1-IgG antibodies in low levels with no clinical signs of chronic Q fever. Three patients, including one pregnant woman showed high-level titres and were treated for chronic Q fever. Eleven patients with low PH1-IgG antibodies and all three patients with high titres developed IgA antibodies from 10 weeks after clinical manifestation; therefore PH1-IgA cannot be used as the only serological marker for chronic Q fever. Chronic infections were indicated only by a continuous increase of PH1 antibodies and a high persistence of PH2-IgG. We therefore conclude that the exclusion of chronic Q fever infection by a single serological examination cannot be done. At least three consecutive tests should be performed, that is 3, 6, and 9 months after initial Q fever infection. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) (Virion/Serion [Wuerzburg, Germany]), an indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) (BIOS/Focus [Cypress, CA]), and a nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were explored for diagnosis of acute Q fever in reference to time of serum collection. Serum samples of 22 patients with acute Q fever collected around the fifth day of illness were included. A sensitivity of 30% by ELISA and 80% by IFAT (P = 0.1) was found for the first 5 days of illness and 92% by ELISA and 83% by IFAT during the sixth and eleventh day. PCR revealed a positive result in 8 cases (36%) with 6 cases deriving from the first 5 days of illness. We conclude that ELISA aids especially in the diagnosis of Q fever after 5 days of illness. Coxiella burnetii, the causative agent of Q fever, and Rickettsia spp. are bacterial pathogens that can be transmitted by ticks of the genus Dermacentor (i.e., Dermacentor marginatus and D. reticulatus). In Germany, the occurrence of these ticks is currently limited to few areas. However, due to increasing temperatures, these vectors will likely extend their distribution in the future, and C. burnetii and Rickettsia spp. might spread with them. To assess the prospective risk of human infections by these agents, it is important to know their current distribution. We collected 666 adult Dermacentor spp. and 119 rodents, mainly Microtus arvalis, in 3 Q fever endemic areas in southern Germany. Ticks and rodent organ pools were screened by PCR for C. burnetii and Rickettsia spp. No evidence of C. burnetii infections could be found in ticks or rodents, suggesting that these animals do not play an essential role in the epidemiology of Q fever in Germany. Rickettsia raoultii and R. slovaca could be detected in 30.3% and 0.75% of all examined ticks, respectively. In contrast, no rickettsia infections could be found in any rodent samples. Both rickettsia species can cause tick-borne lymphadenopathy (TIBOLA), a usually mild human disease. Because of the possible transmission of these rickettsiae to humans, TIBOLA should be considered in the differential diagnosis of tick-borne diseases. Tularemia is a rare, notifiable zoonosis in Germany. Since November 2004, several lines of evidence including outbreaks in humans or animals and confirmed infections in indigenous hare and rodent populations have indicated a re-emergence of tularemia in different German federal states. Unfortunately, reliable basic information on the seroprevalence in different geographical regions, permitting the identification of risk factors, does not exist. Combining a sensitive screening assay with a highly specific confirmative immunoblot test, we performed a serological investigation on 2416 sera from a population-based, cross-sectional health survey of the city population of Leutkirch, Baden-Wuerttemberg. A total of 56 sera gave positive results indicating a seroprevalence of 2.32%. Thus, the seroprevalence is tenfold higher than that previously reported in a nationwide study in 2004. Francisella tularensis can cause a wide variety of clinical syndromes including severe, sometimes fatal disease. Missing epidemiological data on its spatial and temporal distribution in an endemic country complicate an appropriate risk assessment necessary for public health authorities to be prepared for an adequate outbreak management. This is of special concern regarding the extraordinary potential of F. tularensis as an agent of bioterrorism. Our investigation performed in a presumed low-risk area demonstrated that tularemia might be seriously underestimated in Germany and probably in other central European countries as well.

Tick-transmitted diseases like tick-borne encephalitis and Lyme Borreliosis have been well known in Germany for decades. Global climate changes may influence the emergence and reemergence of diseases. Ongoing research now gives an additional focus on other tick-borne pathogens such as Coxiella burnetii, Rickettsia conorii, Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Babesia spp., the causative agents of Q-fever, Mediterranean spotted fever, Anaplasmosis and Babesiosis, respectively. The epidemiology of these pathogens was investigated on ticks as well as on rodents, the main hosts. Therefore adults of Dermacentor spp. (n = 862) and rodents (n = 119) were collected and examined for the existence of C. burnetii and Rickettsia spp. by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). In none of the ticks and rodents C. burnetii could be detected, in contrast to Rickettsia spp. where the infection rate in ticks was about 20%. Over and above that, nymphs and adults of Ixodes ricinus were also collected and investigated by PCR for A. phagocytophilum (n = 5,424), Rickettsia helvetica (n = 1,187) and Babesia spp. (n = 3,113). Thereby infection rates of 1%, 8.9% and 1%, respectively, could be determined. The prevalence in rodents was 5.3% for A. phagocytophilum and 0.8% for Babesia microti. None of the rodents was R. helvetica positive.

Background: Cryptosporidium spp. cause enteritic disease worldwide. Besides those patients with an impaired immune system, the general population is also at risk., Patients and Methods: Stool samples from participants of a military field exercise were tested for enteritic pathogens and sera were analyzed for Cryptosporidium-antibodies. All participants received a questionnaire for assessing possible risk factors., Results: After a 5-day field training, 201 of a total of 450 soldiers (45%) developed acute gastroenteritis. Immediate microbiological analysis ruled out enteropathogenic bacteria and viruses as the cause of the disease. Only after hospitalization of one of the patients diagnostic procedures were expanded to the identification of parasites and Cryptosporidium parvum was identified. In addition, 14 fecal samples of 217 specimens were subsequently identified in a Cryptosporidium antigen ELISA. A serological analysis of 214 sera revealed 72% positive for specific IgG antibodies compared with 17% of a control group of soldiers who had not participated in the field training (relative risk 3.38; 95% CI 2.39-4.77; p < 0.001). Analysis of specific IgM levels was less conclusive. Epidemiological analysis of questionnaires correlated drinking of tap water, or consumption of various meals with gastroenteritis. However, the source of contamination could not be identified., Conclusion: Cryptosporidium spp. can cause acute enteritis even in healthy, young adults as demonstrated by this outbreak. Using serological methods, the extent of the outbreak could be estimated in a retrospective analysis.

Norovirus is increasingly recognized as a frequent cause of non-bacterial gastroenteritis. Despite a 10-fold increase in the number of cases reported following the availability of enzyme immunoassays, there are no reports yet from preterm neonates. We report on a sudden clustering of antigen-positive enzyme immuno assays results in a level III neonatal intensive care unit, involving 22 of 43 infants screened. Although antigen-positive samples were significantly associated with bloody stools (P<0.001) and gastric residues (P<0.02), norovirus infection could not be confirmed by reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction or electron microscopy. We question the validity of the so called norovirus-specific antigen assays and warn against overreacting to positive enzyme immunoassays results without reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction confirmation especially in the neonatal setting.

Background: In May 2003 the Soest County Health Department was informed of an unusually large number of patients hospitalized with atypical pneumonia., Methods: In exploratory interviews patients mentioned having visited a farmers' market where a sheep had lambed. Serologic testing confirmed the diagnosis of Q fever. We asked local health departments in Germany to identify notified Q fever patients who had visited the farmers market. To investigate risk factors for infection we conducted a case control study (cases were Q fever patients, controls were randomly selected Soest citizens) and a cohort study among vendors at the market. The sheep exhibited at the market, the herd from which it originated as well as sheep from herds held in the vicinity of Soest were tested for Coxiella burnetii (C. burnetii)., Results: A total of 299 reported Q fever cases was linked to this outbreak. The mean incubation period was 21 days, with an interquartile range of 16-24 days. The case control study identified close proximity to and stopping for at least a few seconds at the sheep's pen as significant risk factors. Vendors within approximately 6 meters of the sheep's pen were at increased risk for disease compared to those located farther away. Wind played no significant role. The clinical attack rate of adults and children was estimated as 20% and 3%, respectively, 25% of cases were hospitalized. The ewe that had lambed as well as 25% of its herd tested positive for C. burnetii antibodies., Conclusion: Due to its size and point source nature this outbreak permitted assessment of fundamental, but seldom studied epidemiological parameters. As a consequence of this outbreak, it was recommended that pregnant sheep not be displayed in public during the 3rd trimester and to test animals in petting zoos regularly for C. burnetii.

This study examined the occurrence of Coxiella burnetii (C. burnetii), the infectious agent of Q-fever, in sheep and sheep-ticks in Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany, as a possible source of infection in Q-fever outbreaks. Using PCR, we examined a total of 1066 Dermacentor ticks from 23 herds and 49 samples of tick excrement from 18 herds for C. burnetii. We found the infectious agent in one non-engorged tick and in one sample of tick excrement from the same herd, in Efringen-Kirchen (district Loerrach). Sequencing the PCR-products confirmed the amplifications as specific for C. burnetii. Further serological tests of random samples of the four districts of Baden-Wuerttemberg showed a seroprevalence from 0 to 1.4% using complement fixation test (CFT), as well as a 0.9 to 10.2% seroprevalence, using ELISA test. Serum samples from a Q-fever-suspicious herd resulted, however, in 6% (CFT) and 53% (ELISA) positive reactions. A comparison between CFT and ELISA showed both a correlation of the two test methods that increased with higher CFT titration levels and positive reactions using ELISA for 9.4% of the serums that had tested negative using CFT. The results of the present study reveal that ticks and their excrements are important vectors of transmission of Q-fever in Baden-Wuerttemberg. Investigations on C. burnetii using PCR as well as serological surveys of sheep are important instruments for diagnosis and disease control of Q-fever.

Tick-transmitted diseases like tick-borne encephalitis and Lyme borreliosis have been well known in Germany for decades. Ongoing research now gives an additional focus to a broad range of other bacteria and parasites in ticks like Anaplasma phagocytophilum, former Ehrlichia sp., Rickettsia sp. and Babesia sp. Knowledge about the prevalence of these infectious agents in ticks is an important prerequisite for risk assessment of human diseases. Therefore nymphs and adult Ixodes ricinus ticks were collected and examined for Anaplasma phagocytophilum (n = 5424 ticks), Rickettsia sp. (n = 1187), and Babesia sp. (n = 3113). For the detection of Anaplasma phagocytophilum, DNA from the 16S rDNA gene was amplified by nested PCR and hybridized with a DIG-labeled oligonucleotide probe. The examination of Rickettsia sp. was performed by single PCR. A partial sequence of the citrate synthase gene was amplified. As a target for the detection of Babesia sp., DNA from the 18S rDNA gene was amplified, also by single PCR. All positive PCR products were sequenced to control specificity. Anaplasma phagocytophilum was detected by PCR in n = 103 (1.9%) out of 5,424 examined ticks from 11 investigation areas. However, not all positive PCR products hybridized using DIG-labeled oligonucleotide probe. Thus, the result of sequencing indicated that only 1.0% (n = 54) belonged to Anaplasma phagocytophilum and nearly half of these PCR products (0.9%) were identified as Wolbachia sp. Rickettsia sp. in Ixodes ricinus ticks from 3 areas were found in n = 105 (8.9%) out of 1,187 ticks examined (range from 13.3% to 5.6%). Sequencing showed Rickettsia helvetica exclusively. In about 2.6% of Rickettsia-positive ticks, double infection with Anaplasma phagocytophilum was found. Babesia sp. was detected in n= 31 (1.0%) out of 3,113 ticks examined, which originated from 4 different areas. By sequencing, n = 28 (90.0%) were identified as Babesia divergens. Three of all Babesia-positive ticks were identified as harboring Babesia microti. The detection of Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Rickettsia sp. and Babesia sp. demonstrates their possible role as a source of human infection in Germany.

In the context of an international outbreak of multiresistant Salmonella Typhimurium DT 104 that was correlated to the consumption of halvah ("helva," an Asian candy made from sesame seed), we examined several sesame seed products for the occurrence of Salmonella. Of 117 ready-to-eat food items containing sesame, we isolated salmonellae from 11 (9.4%) samples. In addition to finding Salmonella Typhimurium DT 104 in the halvah involved in the outbreak, we also isolated different Salmonella Typhimurium strains out of halvah from other manufacturers and countries of origin, as well as Salmonella Offa, Salmonella Tennessee, and Salmonella Poona from sesame paste (tahini) and sesame seed, which is sold for raw consumption in cereals.

Hantavirus, originally named after the Hantaan River in Korea, is the aetiologic agent for the Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS) in the asian region, in the Americas for the Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS). In Middle Europe hantaviruses are responsible for the "Nephropathia Epidemica" (NE), a mild form of HFRS. Hantaviruses belong to the family of Bunyaviridae. Like other members of this family their genome consists of three segments of single stranded RNA (ss-RNA) leading to various subtypes, strongly associated with different rodent hosts. There are two major groups, the hantaan lineage harbored by murine rodents and the Puumala lineage harbored by arvicolidae ("old world") and sigmodontidae ("new world"). Infected rodents may develop chronic infections for months or even life-long and may shed infectious virus with urine and feces. The primary mode of infection of man occurs by inhaling contaminated aerosols or soil particles. The collection of epidemiologic data in the state of Baden-Württemberg was realized in three different steps: Collection and localisation of clinical cases (n = 62): A concentration of clinical cases in the middle of the state was found. The examination of the seroprevalence of exposed persons: By the examination of 4000 sera from forest workers, a seroprevalence with an average of 2.1% was found. In the districts of Reutlingen and Tübingen seroprevalences up to 9% were found. This leads to the assumption that there are endemic areas. Epidemiologic studies of reservoir hosts: Serologic surveys of rodents (n = 1150) in the described areas yielded to a seroprevalence up to 10-30%. Virus carriers were determined with RT-PCR and nested-PCR testing. The prevalence in the rodent population showed an average of 10%. The isolated subtypes were all identified as members of the Puumala-lineage. The origin of sporadic infections with Hantavirus of the Hantaan-lineage in Baden-Wuerttemberg is still unknown.

The prevalence of different genospecies of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in infected ticks could be a determinant for the risk of acquiring Lyme borreliosis (LB) and its clinical presentation. A total of 7373 ticks and 2761 samples from LB patients from the same area in southwest Germany were analyzed by PCR to assess the frequency of the occurrence of LB-associated genospecies. Fifteen percent of the tick samples and 19% of the human samples were found positive for the presence of B. burgdorferi sensu lato. Further identification of 1106 B. burgdorferi sensu lato positive tick samples by reverse line blotting and 125 positive patient samples by nested PCR using species-specific primers revealed the occurrence of B. afzelii, B. burgdorferi sensu stricto, B. garinii and B. valaisiana. Both single-species and mixed infections were noted and a similar distribution of the different genospecies was found in ticks compared with human samples. It was also the purpose of this study to obtain more information about a possible correlation between the distribution of Borrelia species and clinical syndromes of LB. Skin biopsies of 59 patients with acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans and cerebrospinal fluid samples from 78 patients with possible neuroborreliosis were analyzed. In conclusion, the distribution of the different genospecies in ticks is the decisive factor for the occurrence of the different Borrelia genospecies in samples from LB patients. Borrelia afzelii is the predominant genospecies in all kind of samples from the observed area and there seems to be no association of particular Borrelia genospecies with distinct clinical manifestations of LB.

Between the turn of the years 98/99 and 99/2000, stool samples from various health departments in the south of Germany were sent to the LGA (Landesgesundheitsamt Baden-Württemberg). Different testings as bacteriological routines for enterobacteriaceae and virological antigen screenings of the stool samples for adeno-, astro- and rotaviruses lead to negative results. Additional RT-PCR tests for the presence of Norwalk-RNA showed nearly 40% of positive samples. From 14 group infections between december 98 and january 2000, 286 samples in total were sent to the LGA, 118 of them gave positive results for the norwalk agent. For the verification of the analysis, some random samples were sent to the Robert-Koch-Institut, div. of molecular virology at Berlin, where the results were confirmed.

The risk of Borrelia burgdorferi infection and the value of antibiotic prophylaxis after tick bite are controversial. In this study, performed in two areas of southwestern Germany, ticks were collected from 730 patients and examined by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for B. burgdorferi. To assess whether transmission of B. burgdorferi occurred, the patients were clinically and serologically examined after tick removal and during follow-up examinations. Data from all tick bites gave a total transmission rate of 2.6% (19 patients). Eighty-four ticks (11.3%) were PCR positive. Transmission occurred to 16 (26.7%) of 60 patients who were initially seronegative and could be followed up after the bite of an infected tick. These results indicate that the transmission rate from infected ticks in Europe is higher than previously assumed. Examination of ticks and antibiotic prophylaxis in the case of positivity appears to be indicated.

In order to elucidate the epidemiological importance of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in Germany, the prevalence of antibodies against hantaviruses was determined in 13,358 sera from residents of various geographic regions, 1,284 sera from occupational risk groups and 287 sera from chronic hemodialysis patients. Serological investigations were performed using a highly specific transferable solid phase enzyme immunoassay based on the recombinant nucleocapsid proteins of a Hantaan and a Puumala serotype strain. The overall antibody prevalence was found to be 1.68%. In the serum panels from western and southern Germany, it was determined to be 1.83% on average in contrast to only 0.8% in the panel from eastern Germany. An endemic focus revealing an antibody prevalence of 3.12% was detected in a low-mountain area called Suebian Alb, which is located in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg. Occupational risk groups and a group of chronic hemodialysis patients showed a significantly elevated antibody prevalence ranging from 3.3% to 10%. The Puumala serotype was found to be the prevailing virus, but the percentage of sera predominantly recognizing the Hantaan nucleocapsid protein increased towards the south and the east and was significantly elevated in dialysis patients.

Ocellate furcocercariae from the lymnaeid snail Radix auricularia have been identified as causative agents of swimmer's itch, which has become increasingly common in the 'Tunisee' near Freiburg. On an average 11.0%, maximally 25.0%, of the snails were parasitized with these trematode larvae. The Trichobilharzia parasitizing rate in the intermediate hosts found here was thus approximately 10-100 times higher than the Trichobilharzia prevalence described so far. Dwarf mallards (Anas platyrhynchos, blood red) were experimentally infected with Trichobilharzia cercariae from the 'Tunisee'. From the 13th day p.i. miracidia could be found in their faeces by means of the hatching method. The trematode eggs had the shape of an elongated spindle, with a pointed and a rounded end. The sexually differentiated adult worms were localized only in the hepatic and enteric veins. They had an average length of 4.0 mm (3.2-4.6 mm) and a width of 125 microns. Their tegument was strongly folded and had tegumental spines in the oral and ventral suckers, in males in addition along the canalis gynaecophorus. The most striking internal organ was the gut filled with hematin and separated in 2 caeca at its anterior end. Its form and localisation as well as those of the sexual organs were important criteria for the differentiation of the different Trichobilharzia species. The Trichobilharzia species found in the 'Tunisee' clearly differed from Trichobilharzia szidati both morphologically and physiologically. The latter has been considered, until now, to be the main causative agent of swimmer's itch in Germany. Moreover, the adult trematodes from the 'Tunisee' could not be associated with any other species of this genus. We propose therefore the name Trichobilharzia franki n. sp. for the species from the Tunisee.

Alveolar echinococcosis is by far the most dangerous human parasitosis in Central Europe. For the one part this is due to the fact that the parasite is localised in the liver, and for the second part it is due to the infiltrative growth of the larval cestode tissue. The life cycle of echinococcus multilocularis takes place primarily between the fox as final host and mice as intermediate hosts. In this cycle, man is an accidental host and is infected orally via the intake of cestode eggs. The individual channels of infection and their frequency have so far only been subject to speculation. The infection rate of foxes is highest in the range of the Swabian mountain pastures (known as Schwäbische Alb) (up to 55 per cent), but recently values of more than 30% have been registered in the adjacent areas as well. No accurate data are available on the infection rate in humans; seroepidemiological data indicate a prevalence between 0.1 and 0.5 per thousand. IHA, IIFT and ELISA are the most frequently used methods in serodiagnostics of echinococcosis. The specific E. multilocularis antigen should be used instead of the commercially available E. granulosus antigen when examining patients for alveolar echinococcosis. In clinical diagnostics, sonography and especially CT are well tried. If the parasitic infestation is discovered early, radical surgery is the method of choice. Chemotherapy with mebendazole (e.g. Vermox) is still unsatisfactory despite improvements. Possibly an echinococcus therapy of foxes via baits containing praziquantel may be a possibility to minimize the transfer to the human organism.

People of Southern Germany as well as European and non European asylum applicants were examined for Toxocara-infection by means of an ELISA with excretory/secretory antigen of Toxocara canis-larvae; in default of a reference method the cut off was defined statistically. In the Stuttgart area, the average seroprevalence of healthy blood donors was 4.8%; children aged 1-7 years showed a seroprevalence of 2.1%. However the low percentage in children sera is probably not the effect of a lower risk of infection, but may result from the fact that most of the tested children live in city areas. Non-Europeans and Eastern Europeans showed a significantly higher seroprevalence (13.7% or 17.7% respectively) in comparison to the blood donors from Southern Germany. This indicates a higher risk of infection in these countries. It was possible to determine the different risk factors for a Toxocara canis-infection with some of the test-participants in Southern Germany. Compared to the low-risk-group (seroprevalence 1.9%), the test groups with risk factors showed a significant increase in seroprevalence: dog-owners 5.6%, owners of domestic cattle 9.4%, cat owners 10.9%, farmers 22.6%. In the presence of several risk factors an additive effect on the seroprevalence could be found: In the test group with one risk factor the seroprevalence (9.2%) was lower than in the test groups with two (10.8%) or three risk factors (18.6%). Considering the high prevalences found in this study and the possible dangerous complications of Toxocara canis-infections, medical and hygienic measures seem to be advisable.
