Background: Recessions following immediate implant insertion are frequently reported in the literature. Data regarding implant installation in presence of mucogingival recessions are rare., Purpose: This study observes soft tissue level changes following immediate implant insertion and provisionalization of implants with or without connective tissue grafts in the anterior maxilla in patients with initial mucogingival recession within a follow-up period between one and eight years., Materials and Methods: Twenty-six patients with marginal gingival recessions, which were designated for extraction and immediate implant insertion in the anterior zone of the maxilla (13-23), were included. Out of a larger group of immediate implants only single tooth replacements with 1 to 3 mm recession and a pre- and post-op CB-CT were selected. Facial bone deficiencies were grafted flaplessly with autologous bone in all sites. In a group of 13 patients the recessions (mean 2.3 ± 0.7 mm, range 1.0-3.0 mm) were grafted additionally by connective tissue (ABG + CTG), in the remaining 13 patients no soft tissue grafting (mean recession 1.8 ± 0.6 mm, range 1.0-3.0 mm) was performed (ABG). The marginal hard and soft tissue level, the width of the keratinized mucosa, the PES, and implant success were evaluated., Results: After a mean follow-up period of 45 months the recessions were significantly reduced in the ABG group from 1.8 to 0.9 mm. The improvement was even more pronounced in the ABG + CTG group (from 2.3 to 0.5 mm). The PES improved significantly in both groups. At final examination all implants were still in function. Within the observational period, in 5 of 13 implants a marginal bone loss of more than 1 mm was noticed in the ABG, but in none of the ABG + CTG group., Conclusions: These clinical results provide evidence that immediate implant placement might improve the facial soft tissue level. Statement of Problem: Tooth wear is an increasing problem in a society where people are living longer., Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of age, sex, and location of teeth on the severity of tooth wear and to determine the prevalence of dentin exposure in the general population of Germany., Material and Methods: Tooth wear was measured in casts of both jaws of 836 persons with a 6-point (0-5) ordinal rating scale. Linear random-intercept regression models with the covariates of age, sex, jaw, and tooth group (with the participant as a grouping variable) were computed to determine the association of these covariates with tooth wear of a single tooth., Results: The mean tooth wear score across all age groups, both sexes, and all teeth was 2.9 (standard deviation, 0.8), and the prevalence of teeth with exposed dentin was 23.4%. The participants' age was correlated with the mean tooth wear scores (r=0.51). The tooth wear level among women was on average 0.15 units lower than among men, and tooth wear was on average 0.59 units higher for anterior teeth than for posterior teeth., Conclusions: Increased tooth wear in anterior teeth may be due to the initially predominant guidance by anterior teeth, with age-related linear progress in tooth wear. Disseminated infection with Mycobacterium genavense was diagnosed in an adult grizzled giant squirrel (Ratufa macroura). Microscopical examination showed granulomatous inflammation in the brain, kidneys, lungs and maxilla with intracellular acid-fast bacilli. Objective: To give detailed insight into the space conditions and prevalence of spacing and crowding in schoolchildren at nine years of age. The reliability and validity of screening methods was also assessed., Design: Epidemiological survey., Setting: South-western part of Germany (Rhein-Neckar-Kreis); elementary schools in a region with a low orthodontic care rate., Sample and Methods: 494 nine-year-old German schoolchildren (237 males, 257 females, median age 9 years) were examined orthodontically in cooperation with the local community dentistry service. A special measurement ruler was developed to enhance validity and reliability of space measurements on location in the schools., Results and Conclusions: Concerning space conditions in the incisor segments: in the maxilla the variety encountered comprised both space excess and moderate to severe crowding. This was considerably larger in the maxilla than in the mandible. Severe crowding (> 5 mm) was found more often in the maxilla than in the mandible and affected around 2-3% of the maxillary dentitions. Also severe contact point displacements (IOTN Grade 4) were mainly restricted to the maxilla (prevalence approximately 3%). In the canine-premolar segments, the arch segments in males were in general around 0.5 mm larger than among the females, also within each dental stage. In general, the maxilla was more often affected by posterior crowding than the mandible. Anterior crowding seemed to be more prevalent than posterior crowding. With respect to the screening methods used in the present study, reliable and valid measurements were also found to be possible in schools. This may open up further opportunities for orthodontic screening by community dentistry services or similar organizations.

Objectives: Prevalence of bisphosphonate-associated osteonecrosis of the jaws within the catchment area of a university hospital maxillofacial unit and to review the outcome of treatment., Methods: In a retrospective study, all patients with osteonecrosis, osteomyelitis and osteoradionecrosis treated in the period from January 2000 to March 2005 in the department for Maxillo Facial Surgery at the University of Mainz, Germany were analysed., Results: Forty percent of the patients are grouped to odontogenic or surgically induced osteomyelitis. The second largest group (28%) were patients with osteoradionecrosis (ORN). Ten percent of all patients developed an osteonecrosis after treatment with bisphosphonates (BOJ). Eight percent showed osteomyelitis or sequester due to a trauma while 14% of all patients had osteomyelitis of unknown origin. All BOJ patients took bisphosphonates because of metastatic diseases of the bone (plasmocytoma, mamma carcinoma and prostate cancer) for up to 5 years. All had been administered a nitrogen-containing bisphosphonate (either pamidronat or zoledronat). Thirteen out of the 17 patients with BOJ and 14 of the 45 with ORN reported a possible trigger like previous tooth extraction, pressure denture sore or periodontal diseases., Conclusion: These findings support the association of bisphosphonate therapy and osteonecrosis of the jaw. The importance of this new disease is characterised by the growing number of patients. The role of dental trigger factors and the poor surgical outcome both seem to justify a prophylactic dental care concept in high-risk patients.

The comparison of the post-mortem dental findings and jaw bones with ante-mortem data of Josef Mengele, physician of the concentration camp of Auschwitz, makes evident, that there is positive identity by high probability.
