In continuous cover forestry, plenter silviculture is regarded as an elaborated system for optimizing the sustainable production of high-quality timber maintaining a constant but heterogeneous canopy. Its complexity necessitates high silvicultural expertise and a detailed assessment of forest stand structural variables. Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) can offer reliable techniques for long-term tree mapping, volume calculation, and stand variables assessment in complex forest structures. We conducted surveys using both automated TLS and conventional manual methods (CMM) on two plots with contrasting silvicultural regimes within the Black Forest, Germany. Variations in automated tree detection and stand variables were greater between different TLS surveys than with CMM. TLS detected an average of 523 tree stems per hectare, while CMM counted 516. Approximately 9.6% of trees identified with TLS were commission errors, with 6.5% of CMM trees being omitted using TLS. Basal area per hectare was slightly higher in TLS (38.9 m3) than in CMM (38.2 m3). However, CMM recorded a greater standing volume (492.7 m3) than TLS (440.5 m3). The discrepancy in stand volume between methods was primarily due to TLS underestimating tree height, especially for taller trees. DBH bias was minor at 1 cm between methods. Repeated TLS inventories successfully matched an average of 424 tree positions per hectare. While TLS adequately characterizes complex plenter forest structures, we propose enhancing this methodology with personal laser scanning to optimize crown coverage and efficiency and direct volume measurements for increased accuracy of wood volume estimations. Key message: We provide a set of allometric models for wild cherry trees (Prunus avium L.) established in agroforestry systems. A total of 70 trees in southwestern Germany were surveyed using terrestrial laser scanning and analysed using quantitative structure models. The derived allometric models provide a stable base for biomass estimation in comparable agroforestry systems. Our biomass model, based on volume estimates converted to biomass, shows no significant differences to a previous study in the same region on the same species, although it was conducted on agroforestry trees under a different management regime. Context: Wild cherry (Prunus avium L.) is a common tree species in agroforestry systems (AFS). Utilised for either fruit production or for high-value timber production, it is a highly relevant species, yet even basic allometric models are lacking. Aims: The aim of this study was to develop a set of allometric models for wild cherry trees in AFS. Within this context, we present an innovative non-destructive approach to estimate bark and wood volume separately by applying bark thickness models to 3D models of trees. To assess model applicability to different AFS, we compared our allometric model for above-ground biomass with a previous biomass model for wild cherry trees under different management in the same region. Methods: Wild cherry trees (n = 70) located within AFS in southern Germany were scanned with a terrestrial laser scanner. Quantitative structure models were used to derive tree dimensions and above-ground volume per tree. Using additional auxiliary data, the target variables were derived, and corresponding allometric models were fitted. Results: The allometric models estimating above-ground volume, oven-dry biomass, carbon content and nutrient content based on diameter at breast height (DBH) showed excellent fits (R2adj ≥ 0.97). The comparisons with a similar study conducted in the same region suggested that management practices such as pruning have only a minor influence on the relationship between DBH and above-ground tree biomass. The nutrient content in the trees decreased in the order Ca > N > K > Mg > P. Conclusions: The derived allometric models provide valuable information on this important agroforestry tree species. Our findings can both inform management practices in AFS and advance ecological understanding of these systems. Driven by developments in the automotive industry, the availability of compact consumer-grade LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) sensors has increased significantly in recent years. Some of these sensors are also suitable for UAV-based surveying tasks. This paper first discusses the differences between consumer-grade and survey-grade LiDAR systems. Special attention will be paid to the scanning mechanisms used on the one hand and to different solutions for the transceiver units on the other hand. Based on the technical data of two concrete systems, the consumer-grade DJI Zenmuse L1 sensor and the survey-grade scanner RIEGL VUX-1UAV, the expected effects of the sensor parameters on the 3D point cloud are first discussed theoretically and then verified using an exemplary data set in Hessigheim (Baden-Württemberg, Germany). The analysis shows the possibilities and limitations of consumer-grade LiDAR. Compared to the low-cost sensor, the high-end scanner exhibits lower range measurement noise (5–10 mm) and better 3D point location accuracy. Furthermore, the higher laser beam quality of high-end devices (beam divergence, beam shape) enables more detailed object detection at the same point density. With moderate accuracy requirements of 5–10 cm, however, applications in the geodetic-cartographic context also arise for the considerably less expensive consumer-grade LiDAR systems. The objective of the study was to evaluate the volumetric wear of four composite materials for CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing) systems. The materials evaluated were: Cerasmart (CER), Shofu Block HC (SBH), Tetric CAD (TEC) and Brava (BRA). All the samples (n = 40) were subjected to simulated brushing (100,000 cycles). Wear was evaluated by superimposing pre-and post-brushing scans obtained with an intraoral optical scanner (CEREC Primescan; Dentsply Sirona, Germany), which were subsequently imported into the OraCheck software 5.0 (Dentsply Sirona, Germany). The data were analyzed by ANOVA test and Tukey's HSD test was used for multiple comparisons. Cerasmart showed the least wear after brushing. All the tested materials exhibited mass loss. Agroforestry systems provide important ecosystem functions and services. They have the potential to enrich agricultural monocultures in central Europe with structural elements otherwise absent, which is expected to be accompanied by a surplus of ecosystem functions. Here we used quantitative measures derived from terrestrial laser scanning in single-scan mode to describe the structural complexity, the canopy openness, the foliage height diversity and the understory complexity of four common agroforest systems in central Europe. We accessed silvopasture systems with grazing ponies and cattle as well as fellow deer, short rotation forests with agricultural use between the tree rows, tree orchards with grazing sheep and Christmas tree plantations on which chickens forage. As a reference, we used data for 65 forest sites across Germany, representing different forest types, various dominant tree species, stand ages and management systems. We found that overall stand structural complexity is ranked as follows: forest > silvopasture systems > short rotation forest > tree orchard > Christmas tree plantation. Consequently, if overall structural complexity of an agricultural landscape shall be enriched, there is now strong evidence on how this may be achieved using agroforests. However, if the focus lies on selected structures that serve specific functions, e.g. dense understory to provide animal shelter, specific types of agroforests may be chosen and the ranking in overall structural complexity may be less important. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate marginal fit of yttrium tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (Y-TZP)' copings with different finish line designs fabricated with various digital scanners and milling systems. Methods: Three model plastic teeth were prepared with three finish line designs: Design-1, continuous chamfer; Design-2, chamfer with shallow depression; Design-3, chamfer with deep depression. The "master models" were replicated using elastomeric polyvinyl siloxane impression material and poured in type IV stone generating 90 dies, 30 dies for each design. Dies were scanned and copings were milled utilizing three digital scanners and computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) systems: System-1, InEos Red Scan (Sirona Dental Systems, Germany), Vitablocks® Mark II (VITA, Germany) copings milled by Cerec® inLab (Sirona Dental Systems, Germany); System-2, Cerec® AC Connect with BlueCam (Sirona Dental Systems, Germany), Vitablocks® Mark II (VITA, Germany) copings milled by Cerec® inLab (Sirona Dental Systems, Germany); and System-3, NobleProcera™ Optical Scanner (NobleBiocare™), procera zirconia coping milled by a Noble Procera™ milling machine (NobleBiocare™). Copings were seated on their respective "master models" and secured with uniform force. Eight measurements per coping were performed at pre-established points, with a metallurgical microscope (Zeiss, Germany) connected to a high precision digital video-micrometer (Javelin JV6000, California, USA) at 200 × magnification. Results: The tested systems demonstrated marginal gaps ranging from 12.4 to 26.6 µ m. Results for marginal fit of milled copings fabricated using three systems with different finish line designs differed significantly (p < 0.05). Procera zirconia copings scanned and milled with NobleProcera™ exhibited significantly lower marginal gaps compared to other specimen groups. However, InEos Red Scan/Vitablocks® Mark II/Cerec® inLab showed maximum marginal gaps among the study specimens. Conclusions: CAD-CAM manufactured Y-TZP' copings exhibited marginal gaps ranging from 12.49 to 26.6 µ m. The CAD-CAM fabrication system was a significant factor influencing the marginal misfit of Y-TZP' copings. Margin design exhibited system dependent influence on the marginal misfit. Kinematic laser scanning is widely used for the fast and accurate acquisition of road corridors. In this context, road monitoring is a crucial application, since deficiencies of the road surface due to non-planarity and subsidence put traffic at risk. In recent years, a Mobile Mapping System (MMS) has been developed at the University of Bonn, consisting of a GNSS/IMU unit and a 2D laser scanner. The goal of this paper is to evaluate the accuracy and precision of this MMS, where the height component is of main interest. Following this, the applicability of the MMS for monitoring the planarity and subsidence of road surfaces is analyzed. The test area for this study is a 6 km long section of the A44n motorway in Germany. For the evaluation of the MMS, leveled control points along the motorway as well as point cloud comparisons of repeated passes were used. In order to transform the ellipsoidal heights of the MMS into the physical height system of the control points, undulations were utilized. In this respect, a local tilt correction for the geoid model was determined based on GNSS baselines and leveling, leading to a physical height accuracy of the MMS of < 10 mm (RMS). The related height precision has a standard deviation of about 5 mm. Hence, a potential subsidence of the road surface in the order of a few cm is detectable. In addition, the point clouds were used to analyze the planarity of the road surface. In the course of this, the cross fall of the road was estimated with a standard deviation of < 0.07 %. Yet, no deficiencies of the road surface in the form of significant rut depths or fictive water depths were detected, indicating the proper condition of the A44n motorway. Tree saplings are exposed to a competitive growth environment in which resources are limited and the ability to adapt determines general vitality and specific growth performance. In this study we analyzed the aboveground spatial neighborhood of oak [ Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl.] and beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) saplings growing in Germany, by using hemispherical photography and terrestrial laser scanning as proxy for the competitive pressure saplings were exposed to. The hemispherical images were used to analyze the light availability and the three-dimensional (3D) point clouds from the laser scanning were used to assess the space and forest structure around the saplings. The aim was to increase the precision with which the biomass allocation, growth, and morphology of the saplings could be predicted by including more detailed information of their environment. The predictive strength of the models was especially increased through direct neighborhood variables (e.g., relative space filling), next to the light availability being the most important predictor variable. The biomass allocation patterns within the more light demanding oak were strongly driven by the space availability around the saplings. Diameter and height growth variables of both species reacted significantly to changes in light availability, and partly also to the neighborhood variables. The leaf morphology [as leaf-area ratio (LAR)] was also driven by light availability and decreased with increasing light availability. However, the branch morphology (as mean branch weight) could not be explained for oak and the model outcome for beech was hard to interpret. The results could show that individuals of the same species perform differently under constant light conditions but differing neighborhoods. Assessing the neighborhood of trees with highly precise measurement devices, like terrestrial laser scanners, proved to be useful. However, the primary response to a dense neighborhood seemed to be coping with a reduction of the lateral light availability aboveground, rather than responding to an increase of competition belowground. The results suggest continuing efforts to increase the precision with which plant environments can be described through innovative and efficient methods, like terrestrial laser scanning. "A picture is worth a thousand words": a famous quote about knowledge dissemination but also literally true. The documentation of cultural heritage (CH) monuments is carried out by measurements and photos and stored in 3d models – not by textual information alone. So what could be a more straightforward way to inform the public about CH than visual information? This approach can be extended not only by providing static images or videos from predefined angles but by giving the user the opportunity to interactively explore the virtual representation and interact with the scene. Recent advances in contemporary Virtual Reality (VR) have made it available to more people as prices have dropped. New devices have entered the market so that VR is not limited to VR labs, but is available even at home. With modern head-mounted displays the user can immerse himself in the virtual CH monument to explore and interact with it. Game engines offer tools for rapid development of interactions and help to produce visually appealing worlds.In this paper is presented the generation of a virtual 3D model of Rumeli Hisarı, an Ottoman fortress at the Bosporus in Istanbul, Turkey (Fig. 1) and its processing for data integration into the game engine Unity. The project has been carried out as a co-operation between BİMTAŞ, a company of the Greater Municipality of Istanbul, Turkey and the Photogrammetry & Laser Scanning Lab of the HafenCity University Hamburg, Germany with the aim of a VR application for an immersive and interactive visualisation of the fortress using the VR system HTC Vive. The workflow from data acquisition to VR visualisation, including the necessary programming for navigation, is described. The position sensitivity of a planar segmented double-sided germanium strip detector, with 10 × 10 electrical segmentation in orthogonal directions, has been studied using the coincidence method. The coincidences were set up between an imaging scanner and the PSPGe (Position Sensitive Planar Germanium) detector using a positron source, 22Na, and analyzed by employing the Positron Annihilation Correlation principle. A collimated 241Am source scan was also performed to find position resolution along X and Y axes using low energy gamma-ray source. The primary objective of this work is to study the charge carrier transportation for gamma-ray interactions inside the PSPGe detector. In order to select the electrodes of interest and to obtain the pulse shapes for each event, two-dimensional images have been processed. The net charge induced on the surface of the electrode, calculated using the pulse shape analysis procedure, has been used to profile the position resolution and gamma interaction depth. The present study is an input for the deployment of PSPGe detector in the future decay spectroscopy experiments to be performed at the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) in Germany. This work investigates the gamma interaction depth by calculating the rise-time of traces stored for each gamma interaction inside the detector volume, providing ≈ 1 mm resolution along the depth. The position resolution of the detector in lateral directions, determined using the amplitude difference of the transient charges, has also been found to be ≈ 1 mm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Full-waveform small-footprint laser scanning and airborne hyperspectral image data of a forest area in Germany were fused to get a detailed characterization of forest reflective properties and structure. Combining active laser scanning data with passive hyperspectral data increases the information content without adding much redundancy. The small-footprint light detection and ranging (lidar) waveforms on the area of each 5 m × 5 m HyMap pixel were combined into quasi-large-footprint waveforms of 0.5 m vertical resolution by calculating the mean laser intensity in each voxel. As exemplary applications for this data set, we present the estimation of crown base heights and the ease of displaying vertical and horizontal slices through the three-dimensional data set. As a consequence of the identical geometry of the voxel bases and the hyperspectral image, they could be joined as a multi-band image. The combined spectra are well suited for interpretations of pixel content. In a test classification of tree species and age classes, the joint image performed better than the hyperspectral image alone and also better than the hyperspectral image combined with lidar percentile images. The retention of structural elements such as habitat trees in forests managed for timber production is essential for fulfilling the objectives of biodiversity conservation. This paper seeks to predict tree-related microhabitats (TreMs) by close-range remote sensing parameters. TreMs, such as cavities or crown deadwood, are an established tool to quantify the suitability of habitat trees for biodiversity conservation. The aim to predict TreMs based on remote sensing (RS) parameters is supposed to assist a more objective and efficient selection of retention elements. The RS parameters were collected by the use of terrestrial laser scanning as well as unmanned aerial vehicles structure from motion point cloud generation to provide a 3D distribution of plant tissue. Data was recorded on 135 1-ha plots in Germany. Statistical models were used to test the influence of 28 RS predictors, which described TreM richness (R2: 0.31) and abundance (R2: 0.31) in moderate precision and described a deviance of 44% for the abundance and 38% for richness of TreMs. Our results indicate that multiple RS techniques can achieve moderate predictions of TreM occurrence. This method allows a more efficient and objective selection of retention elements such as habitat trees that are keystone features for biodiversity conservation, even if it cannot be considered a full replacement of TreM inventories due to the moderate statistical relationship at this stage. Rock cliffs are a significant component of world coastal zones. However, rocky coasts and factors contributing to their erosion have not received as much attention as soft cliffs. In this study, two rocky-cliff systems in the southern Baltic Sea were analyzed with Airborne Laser Scanners (ALS) to track changes in cliff morphology. The present contribution aimed to study the volumetric changes in cliff profiles, spatial distribution of erosion, and rate of cliff retreat corresponding to the cliff exposure and rock resistance of the Jasmund National Park chalk cliffs in Rugen, Germany. The study combined multi-temporal Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data analyses, rock sampling, laboratory analyses of chemical and mechanical resistance, and along-shore wave power flux estimation. The spatial distribution of the active erosion areas appear to follow the cliff exposure variations; however, that trend is weaker for the sections of the coastline in which structural changes occurred. The rate of retreat for each cliff–beach profile, including the cliff crest, vertical cliff base, and cliff base with talus material, indicates that wave action is the dominant erosive force in areas in which the cliff was eroded quickly at equal rates along the cliff profile. However, the erosion proceeded with different rates in favor of cliff toe erosion. The effects of chemical and mechanical rock resistance are shown to be less prominent than the wave action owing to very small differences in the measured values, which proves the homogeneous structure of the cliff.
