One American to whom the recent trend of affairs in Europe must have brought especial distress is Andrew D. White, perhaps the most distinguished example of the scholar in politics the United States produced during his generation. Fortunately, a man of 83 can bear these things with more philosophy than one of half that age. White not only received part of his higher education at Oxford, Paris, Saint Petersburg, and Berlin, but he has twice served in a diplomatic capacity at the Russian court—once as attaché and once as Minister—and has been at various times the Minister and Ambassador to Germany.
