The article discusses the history of student groups, known as Landsmannschafte, associated with German Universities, including those founded at Leipzig in 1409, Heidelberg in 1385, and Jena in 1558. The groups were originally established as regional groups banded together for maintaining their self-interests within their respective universities, yet soon became publicly notorious for their code of conduct which included duelling and licentiousness. In the early nineteenth century, the Landsmannschafte were replaced as Corps, which only admitted members of the social upper-classes, with the head of each corps representing the student body on campus.
