This study provides insights about attitudes toward heroes and role models in Germany and Israel. We expected German and Israeli school textbooks and teachers to provide varying renditions for the traumatic effects of World War II and the Holocaust, and for students to express different attitudes about the role of heroes in their lives. In contrast, the study found that German and Israeli adolescents share perceptions about heroes and role models, suggesting that either there are no such models today or that heroes and role models are overblown and dangerous for democracy. In doing so they reflect a broader consensus among their teachers and the school textbooks they use.

Over the past 20 years both Israel and Germany have become destination countries for unaccompanied minors (UM), albeit at different speeds and scales and in contrasting geopolitical settings. This article compares the reception and integration of UM in the two countries with a particular focus on their access to education and employment. The movement of UM over borders goes hand in hand with the drawing of legal, ideological, and conceptual boundaries within these two countries that discriminate between citizens and foreigners. However, the answers provided by the respective migration regimes could not be more different, even though both countries are signatories to the relevant international conventions on UM: while in Germany the primacy of child and youth welfare is applied, the Israeli authorities consider UM as illegal 'infiltrators' and a threat to national security and the Jewish State. A biography is provided of the Nazi German aviator and test pilot Hanna Reitsch. Particular focus is given to role in support of the German Nazi regime from 1933 through the end of World War II, including her reconnaissance mission to rescue the German leader Adolf Hitler in Soviet-occupier Berlin, Germany in 1945. Reitsch life in post-World War II West Germany is discussed.

This study presents German and Israeli youth's heroes and role models. Two hundred twenty-six students from 22 high schools took part in small group interviews. Despite differences in the normative place of the family in the two cultures, the comparison reveals significant similarities between their views and what attributes the subjects assign to their families. Three main models of family members as hero arise from the data: The Self-made Person; sacrifice and pro-social action; and contending with everyday reality. The results point to a) the fading of traditional heroes from the imagination of youth in post-industrial societies; b) the substantive place the family holds in young people's lives. I suggest that the rise of uncertainty and risk in the current socio-historical constellation, contributes to adolescents' choice of figures from their immediate environments that embody safety and a moral framework. The types of sound under discussion in the article include radio, telephone, gramophone, and motorized transportation. It is noted that the study is organized into historical chapters dealing with technological developments, German military history, and national socialist ideology.
