The article reports on the work of the Methods of Empirical Social Research section of the DGS, the German Society of Sociology in 2010, which included sessions organized by the section at the Congress of Sociology in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The author elaborates on the proceedings of section meetings such as the spring conference in Mannheim, Germany and the summer conference in Kassel, Germany. Publications of the section are also presented.

This article challenges the conventional wisdom that, since the circa 1974 discontinuation of policies encouraging temporary labor migration, female migration has significantly outnumbered male migration. Drawing on data from Belgium, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States, the article shows that the proportion of women in gross immigration is lower when the flows originate in developing rather than in developed countries. Women outnumber men only in terms of net migration. Each receiving country has its own variations on these generalizations, with the chief variables being the receiving countries' admission policies and the stage in migration history of the expatriate population. The article focuses on the migration trends experiences by several developed countries which include Australia, Canada, and the Federal Republic of Germany. It says that eight developed countries were found to have published data needed to assess changes in the regional composition of migration inflows, in which the data were based on permanent residents admissions, country of birth, and the number of incoming and outgoing migrants. It states that published datas which uses classification by country of origin are not ideal for the identification of developed and developing countries. It adds that a rise of refugee and asylum-seeker migration directed to most developed countries have witnessed in 1980.
