Introduction: Many corporate organizations around the world are looking at new ways to improve the health and well-being of their employees. Many have begun to use m-health approaches and unique applications (apps) to provide assistance. In Germany, both m-health and occupational health management (OHM) are growing quickly. Therefore, we hypothesized that the combination-apps usage in OHM-is growing as well. We studied the usage of health apps in large corporations for health management of employed individuals. Methods: To understand the environment in Germany, a two-part study was conducted. First, an extensive literature search was done and second, interviews were conducted with 12 of the 20 biggest companies' health management representatives. Results: Using key search terms, 5,445 peer-reviewed journal articles traced with German databases and on PubMed were reviewed. Interestingly and somewhat surprising to the authors, none of them covered our specific topic. Interviews were conducted with 60% of the companies indicated. Only 3 out of 12 companies use apps. Four companies are piloting apps. With one exception, apps cover well-known areas such as food coaching, physical motion, smoking cessation, stress prevention, and other health-related subjects. One app used sensors in work clothing to prevent unhealthy motion. With a few exceptions, there has been no evaluation of the utility and utilization of apps. Discussion: Current app usage in corporate health management in Germany is surprisingly low. Apps need to be better evaluated. Main obstacles-which could be resolved in the future-are legal restrictions (especially on data security), the lack of company-owned smart phones, misfit of apps and corporate health strategy, a lack of app evaluation, and high app prices. Background: Digital technologies show a high potential for health promotion and prevention, but an analysis throughout the planning, implementation, and evaluation phases of setting-based health promotion has not yet taken place. It also remains unclear to what extent digital technologies promote participation, partnerships, empowerment, and equity in settings., Purpose: This study is aimed at exploring future trends and possible uses of technologies throughout the phases of setting-based health promotion over the next 5 years. Further, it discusses the use of technologies to build participation, partnerships, empowerment, and equity in settings, and highlights the differences in the predictions of experts from science and practice., Method: A two-stage web-based Delphi survey with experts in setting-based health promotion/prevention was conducted. We conducted a content analysis for open questions and a quantitative analysis for closed questions., Results: According to the experts (N = 42, complete participation in the first round of the survey), digital transformation will increasingly find its way into the various process phases over the next 5 years. In particular, technologies for behavioral change in hybrid formats are expected. The use of technology in the future can lead to more participation, partnerships, empowerment, and equity in settings on the one hand, but on the other hand can also reinforce exclusion and injustice if no suitable underlying conditions are provided., Discussion: Research is needed on technologies for changing setting structures. Many digital interventions rely on the participation of their users to have a positive impact. In various areas it can be observed that the use of digital interventions is often reduced or fully discontinued by the users after a short period of time. This is seen as one of the main factors that can limit the effectiveness of digital interventions. In this context, the concept of adherence to digital interventions is becoming increasingly important. Adherence to digital interventions is roughly defined as "the degree to which the user followed the program as it was designed," which can also be paraphrased as "intended use" or "use as it is designed." However, both the theoretical-conceptual and practical discussions regarding adherence to digital interventions still receive too little attention.The aim of this narrative review article is to shed more light on the concept of adherence to digital interventions and to distinguish it from related concepts. It also discusses the methods and metrics that can be used to operationalize adherence and the predictors that positively influence adherence. Digital technologies increasingly affect our daily lives and interact with our living environment. A high potential for prevention and health promotion is referred to digital interventions. So far, however, there is a lack of well-founded evidence on the effectiveness of such measures. This paper will address the challenges of evidence-based digital interventions in prevention and health promotion. The results are summarised in the form of a narrative review.So far, evidence-based medicine methods have not been sufficiently used in the evaluation of benefits and harms in the field of prevention and health promotion. The reasons for this are found in the complexity of the corresponding measures. This complexity is further increased by digital interventions. Nevertheless, it is urgently recommended to place a stronger focus on evidence-based interventions in order to enable meaningful and comprehensible evaluation procedures with regard to the effectiveness of digital interventions in prevention and health promotion.Digitalisation leads to new demands on prevention and health promotion. A critical perspective on the actual impact of digital interventions and their social implications is needed. The development of a solid knowledge base is necessary in order to promote acceptance of the technologies and to achieve sustainable implementation.

The rapid development and proliferation of digital health technologies have not only changed the medical professions, but offer great potential for public health, particularly in health promotion and disease prevention.At the same time, this emerging field is also characterized by conceptual and terminological fuzziness, a marked lack of high-quality evidence, and an absence of an honest discussion of unintended consequences and side effects. Further challenges for digital public health lie in the fact that the development of new health technologies is mainly driven by technological progress and less by evidence-based needs and research in public health.In this overview paper, we aim at conceptually denoting the field of digital public health, using principal public health functions as guiding principles. We discuss some current applications of digital health technologies in fulfilling public health functions and propose a needs-based development of digital health technologies.We will further address specific challenges to digital public health, in particular socio-economic differences in the usage of and profiting from digital health technologies, data protection and privacy issues, as well as ethical issues.

The discussion of digital health technologies, in particular medical and health apps, is currently dominated by a focus on their potential to reach large parts of the population for the dissemination of evidence-based health promotion and prevention content. However, potentially unintended consequences, side effects, and negative effects of digital health technologies are rarely discussed in public health.In this paper, via a narrative literature review, we propose a perspective on unintended consequences and side-effects of digital health technologies on multiple hierarchical levels of a socio-ecological model of health. Unintended consequences and side-effects of digital health technologies can be identified on an individual level, a level of social relationships, and a health services level.We propose a broader conceptualization of unintended consequences and side-effects of digital health technology together with a more thorough documentation of such effects using multiple levels in a socio-ecological approach. This would build a cumulative evidence base of unintended effects and shift the focus from development-centered discussion of risks and challenges to a comprehensive conception of side effects and undesirable effects of digital health technologies. The proposed division into three effect levels may be helpful here.

Adolescent cancer patients have to deal with many dependencies and obligations. Very often they are torn out of their social environment and become isolated because of changing therapy cycles and different treatment locations. This causes significant social and economic damage. The objective of this article is to present the first steps of an empirical exploration of the possibilities of mobile IT support for communication and coordination for this target group during treatment and aftercare. Special emphasis is put on the effects of mobile systems on the patient's perceived quality of life. The background we bring to the fore is a four-month field experiment conducted together with the cancer station of the hospital of Heidelberg University. We focus on particularities of and challenges for mobile information systems for patients in Germany and outline necessary future research aspects in this field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
