Abstract

The article reports that researchers from Lausanne, Switzerland and the Max-Born-Institute for Nonlinear Optics and Ultrafast Spectroscopy, Berlin, Germany have described strated laser operation of ytterbium-doped waveguide composed of an oxide of potassium, yttrium and tungsten. The performance of the buried waveguide was slightly inferior to the surface waveguide because of the higher doping concentration that can lead to higher reabsorption losses.

Abstract

The article focuses on the cooling of dilute gases through laser-based Doppler cooling. It is stated that this technique is limited to dilute gases. Recently, researchers in Germany have demonstrated a laser technology for cooling a highly dense gas mixture. They used ytterbium-doped crystals to achieve cooling to nearly cryogenic temperatures.

3. IPG Awarded Contract to Supply Fiber Lasers to German Automaker.

Abstract

The article reports that IPG Photonics Corp.'s German unit, IPG Laser GmbH, has received an order for continuous wave ytterbium fiber laser systems from BMW Group AG of Munich, Germany. BMW Group will use the lasers in the production line for the welding of automotive doors. The fiber lasers are set for delivery in the last quarter of 2008.
