The survival of the extensive livestock system, the practice for most farmers in the livestock industry in Ghana depends heavily on the natural pastures as forage resource. To efficiently use the rangelands, knowledge of the species composition, especially that of poisonous plants is essential. Documented knowledge in Ghana is scanty; documentation and dissemination of the knowledge resource would enable a wider access and wider benefit to stakeholders. A study was conducted in Ghana on poisonous plants with the aim to discover the existence and diversity of poisonous plants and associated antidotes affecting livestock for documentation and preservation of knowledge. 70 different items were cited; 22 were poisonous plants for which antidotes were not cited, 28 were poisonous plants with known antidotes and 32 antidotes. There were 575 citations of plants from 194 reported cases of suspected plant poisoning, categorized as poisonous plants for which no antidotes were cited (146), poisonous plants with cited antidotes (147) and antidotes (282). 50 plants species were identified and belonged to 29 plant families. Some plants were known only by local names. There was an extensive knowledge of the diversity of poisonous plants and antidotes within the ecological zones along with possible antidotes. Questions: Do lianas alter the relative success of tree species during regeneration? Are the effects of lianas on tree seedlings moderated by canopy openness? How are patterns of biomass allocation in tree seedlings affected by liana competition? Location: Tropical moist semi-deciduous forest in Ghana. Methods: Seedlings of the trees Nauclea diderrichii (pioneer), Khaya anthotheca (non-pioneer light demander) and Garcinia kola (non-pioneer shade bearer) were planted with the lianas Acacia kamerunensis (fast growing) and Loeseneriella rowlandii (slow growing) in large and small gaps (ca. 15% and 8% PAR respectively) and in the forest understorey (ca. 4% PAR). Seedling survival, growth and biomass allocation were measured. Results: Canopy openness moderated the interaction between liana and tree seedlings. The nature of the interaction was both liana and tree species specific and displayed temporal variation. Acacia competition effects were stronger in sites with greater canopy openness. In big gaps, Acacia reduced significantly the biomass of Nauclea by 32% and Khaya by about 50%. Khaya growth in leaf area was five times greater without Acacia, while Nauclea and Garcinia were not affected. Acacia was more plastic than Loeseneriella in response to the environment and the tree species. Our results show that while Loeseneriella, with lower rates of growth, did not affect seedling growth of the three species evaluated, Acacia could alter the relative success of tree species during regeneration. Conclusions: There is evidence that competitive effects by Acacia on tree regeneration through competition could modify tree species capacity to establish. Albizia adianthifolia (Schumach) W. F. Wright, a N-fixing legume tree, has a wide distribution in Africa, in Ghana occurring in high rainfall forests and in seasonally droughted forests, and is associated in the Ghanaian forest zone with dry, infertile sites. We hypothesised that A. adianthifolia hosted different rhizobial strains in different forest types, and that these different strains would show different growth responses to moisture stress and different motility and mortality in droughted soil. Three isolates, extracted from seedlings of A. adianthifolia growing in three forest types differing in seasonal drought, were identified as Bradyrhizobium elkanii and exposed to varying levels of osmotic stress. Growth responses varied between the three strains, one of which displayed clear signs of drought tolerance. A novel approach using soil leaching columns was used to test the effects of soil pore water (in terms of neck diameter) on both the survival and movement of wet and dry forest rhizobial isolates through soil columns. The responses of the isolates were significantly different, the pore neck diameter, marginally insignificant and the drought treatment insignificant. Thus the dry forest isolate survived better in all treatments, and showed less response to the treatments, than the isolate from the wet forest. The results offer preliminary evidence that Bradyrhizobium elkanii strains from A. adianthifolia in Ghana have evolved in response to local differences in seasonal water availability.
