This paper aims to analyse the status of Gibraltar, both internally and in the European Union (EU) during the Brexit era. Therefore, it will examine its evolution and the limitations that this territory has had to face along the way, until it became a British overseas territory (BOT). Moreover, this paper will take into account the particularities of Gibraltar that have led to the enjoyment of an ad hoc status in the EU. This status has meant that Gibraltar, unlike the rest of BOT, has been part of the EU with a specific regime. However, once the United Kingdom leaves the EU, Gibraltar, against its will, will see this privileged status ended. Finally, this paper will analyse how the lack of sovereignty of this territory leads to specific limitations when deciding on its own interests. In short, Brexit is one of the main challenges that Gibraltar has had to face throughout its modern history and sets a dangerous precedent in order to face its future on the international scene.
