In the end of Plato's Ion, Socrates argues that some foreigners – between them Phanosthenes of Andros – would have reached the position of strategos in Athens. It is a paradoxical subject, that can be explained either from a historical point of view – in the context of the Athenian memory of the last campaigns of the Peloponnesian War – either from the point of view of the Platonic discussion on politics. The alleged presence of a foreigner in the highest military position in Athens, in the end of the 5th Century B.C.E., reveals the problem of delimitation of the space of politics.
