Introduction: The term "Mediterranean lifestyle" has gained increasing prominence in recent years, yet a specific definition remains elusive. In response, the Mediterranean Lifestyle Medicine Institute Board of Directors convened a multidisciplinary panel comprising international experts and leaders in lifestyle medicine. Their goal was to review existing literature and formulate a consensus definition of the "traditional Mediterranean lifestyle (tMedL)," referring to the historical way of living of the people in the Mediterranean region. This paper presents the agreed consensus statement and a comprehensive holistic definition of the term "traditional Mediterranean lifestyle." Methods: Major medical and social sciences electronic databases from inception to February 2023 were searched, employing keywords relevant to the Mediterranean lifestyle and its constituent elements (diet, physical activity, sleep, stress, socialization). Subsequently, definitions for each pillar were created and synthesized to derive a comprehensive definition of the "traditional Mediterranean lifestyle." Results: This proposed definition received ratification from the Mediterranean Lifestyle Medicine Institute's expert working group during the First International Mediterranean Lifestyle Medicine Conference held in June 2023 on the island of Leros, Greece. "The traditional Mediterranean lifestyle is characterized by its diverse and adaptable nature. Key facets encompass conviviality, lifelong social connectedness, purposeful living, strong community and familial bonds, harmony with nature and the environment, profound spirituality, adherence to religious practices, preservation of local customs, resilience cultivated through adversity, and a commitment to moderation across all spheres of life." Conclusions: This definition comprehensively outlines the primary lifestyle factors ingrained in Mediterranean inhabitants across generations. Its holistic nature furnishes a crucial conceptual framework for directing lifestyle medicine practitioners in assisting patients to mitigate diseases, promote overall well‐being, devise research initiatives to investigate the health ramifications of this lifestyle, and inform curriculum development. When we refer to scientific knowledge, we, implicitly or explicitly, refer to its three components, namely its conceptual framework, its methodological principles and its cultural aspects. The pendulum is a topic of science teaching and learning where all three of these aspects can be examined with the aim of gaining a holistic appreciation of the transformation of a natural phenomenon into a phenomenon of the physical sciences and how this can then be recontextualized into a topic of school science learning. The main objective of this study is to examine whether this richness of the pendulum as a topic of teaching is revealed in the school science textbooks in Greece and Cyprus, for both primary and secondary education. We will use an analytical mapping instrument in order to determine, whether the pendulum is introduced at some grade level and, if so, in what context. We will then use an interpretive instrument, which relies on taxonomy of science curricula into traditional, innovative and constructivist programs, in order to attach meaning to the analysis. Finally, we will formulate a series of proposals in relation to the educational value of the simple pendulum at the Greek and Cypriot gymnasium level.

Patients with autoimmune rheumatic diseases (ARDs) are at increased risk for pneumococcal infections and should be vaccinated against Streptococcus pneumoniae. Data on the rates of pneumococcal vaccination among patients with ARDs in Southern Europe are scarce. Here, we estimate the pneumococcal vaccination rate in patients living in Greece with ARDs, explore the patients' awareness regarding vaccination, and try to recognize factors that influence the vaccine uptake. Between October 2015 and September 2016, a structured questionnaire was provided to all consecutive patients with ARDs attending one outpatient clinic of our department. The survey included parameters concerning patients' demographics, underlying ARD and immunosuppressive medications, other comorbidities, vaccine type, knowledge about infection risk and necessity of vaccination. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to study any association of these factors with the vaccination uptake. Overall, 395 patients with ARDs (30.13% aged >65 years and 78.99% female) participated in our survey. The most frequent ARD was rheumatoid arthritis (43.04%); 40.51% of patients were receiving biologic agents and 44.56% steroids. Pneumococcal vaccination rate was 49.37%, while 45.06% of patients have been vaccinated during the last five years and only 8.21% of them had a second pneumococcal vaccine, as per national guidelines. The decision of vaccination was significantly influenced by the patient's age (>65 years) (p < 0.001) and the complete awareness of reasons for being vaccinated (p < 0.001), but not by presence of comorbidities, the type of ARD or administration of a biologic agent. The main reason for no vaccination was that it was not suggested by the caring physician (82.50%). In our cohort of patients with ARDs the pneumococcal vaccination was suboptimal. Better understanding of the significance of vaccination by the patient and suggestion for vaccination by the caring physician will improve vaccination uptake and optimize the clinical benefits among patients with ARDs. This article engages the challenge of island history as caught in between national historiography and local life stories. It focuses on Ro, a Greek islet bordering Turkey that has been imagined and idealized as a space of national resistance and resilience. The article unpacks the grand national narrative that has been developed with regard to the heroic life story of a solitary woman living on the island. It utilizes local counter-narratives as well as the life stories of other solitary individuals who have periodically lived on the island. To that extent, the article aims, on the one hand, to sensitize as to the politics of islandography and, on the other, to highlight the importance of social history in challenging hegemonic or colonial narratives as well as reimagining island space. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine whether firm-level asset investment effects in returns found for US firms occur within the Greek stock market.Design/methodology/approach The paper utilizes portfolio-level tests and cross-sectional regressions.Findings The authors find that growth in total assets is strongly negatively related to future stock returns of Greek firms. In fact, the relation remains statistically significant, even when the authors control for other strong predictors of future returns (i.e. market capitalization and book-to-market ratio). Furthermore, the authors find that a hedge trading strategy on asset growth rate consisting of a long (short) position in firms with low (high) balance sheet growth generates positive returns, confirming that investment growth has significant predictive power for future returns of Greek listed firms.Originality/value The paper adds to the literature on the generalization of asset pricing regularities attributable to accounting figures in an emerging market. The aim of the present study was to differentiate Mediterranean prickly pear according to geographical origin and Cypriot prickly pear according to botanical origin based on individual vitamins, antioxidants and mineral content combined with chemometrics. Seventy-four prickly pear samples were collected during the harvest periods 2019 and 2020 from Cyprus, Greece, Italy and Spain. Likewise, 43 prickly pear samples were collected from three different Cypriot cultivars (yellow, red and spineless) during the same harvest periods. UPLC-MS/MS was used to determine individual vitamins and antioxidants; ICP-MS was used to determine minerals and UV spectrophotometry was used to determine total antioxidants and antioxidant activities. Classification rate based on the cross validation method was 86.5% according to geographical origin using 24 chemical markers and 90.7% according to botanical origin using 14 chemical markers. Satisfactory differentiation of geographical and botanical origin of prickly pear was achieved using analytical data including specific chemical markers in combination with chemometrics. • Botanical and geographical differentiation of prickly pear from four Mediterranean countries was attempted. • Differentiation was based on individual vitamins, antioxidants and minerals. • 24 chemical markers were determined for geographical differentiation and 14 for botanical differentiation. • A classification rate of 90.7% was achieved for botanical differentiation. • A classification rate of 86.5% was achieved for geographical differentiation. The article describes the water balance method of groundwater recharge in three different environments in the eastern Mediterranean. A discussion of the groundwater recharge which was seen in Cyprus, Greece, and Jordan and the water balance model which was used in the areas for groundwater recharge estimations is presented. The use of the water balance model as an important tool for the management of the limited natural water resources, which require a detailed understanding of regional hydrogeological processes is discussed.

This study formulates a model for the investigation of international migration and tests the model with data on emigration from Greece to the United States. The model uses a Bernoulli-type differential equation and is based upon the existence of a pool of potential emigrants at the sending country created by the push-pull forces operating between a country of origin and a country of destination. Information flows from the receiving to the sending country also influence the migratory current. Applying the model to emigration from Greece to the U.S. from 1820 to 1980 reveals several interesting findings. The intensity of migration was greatly affected by events in Greece and was conditioned by the constraints introduced by changes in American immigration law. Economic reasons, for the most part, forced Greeks to emigrate, but political upheavals also played an important role. At the destination, the U.S. immigration quota system of 1924 (restrictive) and the immigration act of 1965 (facilitative) were particularly critical factors affecting emigration from Greece. Background: The continuously increasing survivorship of female breast cancer makes the monitoring and improvement of patients' quality of life ever so important. While globally there is a growing body of research on health-related quality of life 1 year after surgical treatment for non-metastatic breast cancer, up-to-date information regarding Greek patients is scarce.Objective: To measure the level of QoL of non-metastatic BC survivors in Greece 1 year after surgery.Methods: A sample of 200 female breast cancer survivors aged 18 to 75, who followed up as outpatients in five public hospitals were included in this cross-sectional study. All recruited patients agreed to participate in the study (100% response rate). Quality of life data were collected through the EORTC QLQ-C30 as well as BR23 questionnaires.Results: Cronbach's alpha for all scales of the two questionnaires was from 0.551 to 0.936 indicating very good reliability. According to the Multiple Linear Regression, older patients showed a lower future perspective (p = .031), with those living in rural areas, which was associated with more financial difficulties (p = .001). Women with tertiary education and those who had been hospitalized in a university hospital recorded better on global health status (p = .003 and .000 respectively). Patients who underwent chemotherapy reported better scores in the emotional function sub-scale (p = .025). Women with reconstruction and at least one complication appeared to have significantly better scores in future perspective and social function (p = .005, .002 respectively).Conclusions: Breast cancer survivors were found to have an overall good quality of life, functioning/symptoms scores and were satisfied with the provided care. The aim of this study was to determine and compare lead concentrations in breast milk between urban and rural women. Colostrum from 51 women living in the city of Thessaloniki (exposed to increased air lead concentration, 0.54 micrograms/m3) and from 40 women living in rural areas (exposed to significantly lower air lead concentrations) was analyzed by atomic absorption spectrometry. Urban women showed slightly higher lead concentrations (mean +/- SD: 0.090 +/- 0.029 micrograms/ml) than rural women (mean +/- SD: 0.084 +/- 0.024 micrograms/ml). This difference was not statistically significant. These results suggest that the lead content of human milk is not influenced by the concentrations of this environmental pollutant in the air.
