The purpose of this study is to understand the drivers of cloud droplet formation in orographic clouds. We used a combination of modeling, in-situ and remote sensing measurements at the high-altitude Helmos Hellenic Atmospheric Aerosol and Climate Change station ((HAC)2), which is located at the top of Mt. Helmos (1314 metres above sea level), Greece during the Cloud-AerosoL InteractionS in the Helmos background TropOsphere (CALISTHO) campaign in Fall 2021 (https://calishto.panacea-ri.gr/) to examine the origins of the aerosols (i.e., local aerosol from the Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL), or long-range transported aerosol from the Free Tropospheric Layer (FTL) contributing to the Cloud Condensation Nuclei (CCN), their characteristics (hygroscopicity, size distribution and mixing state), as well as the vertical velocities distributions and resulting supersaturations. We found that the characteristics of the PBL aerosol were considerably different from FTL aerosol and use the aerosol particle number and equivalent mass concentration of the black carbon (eBC) in order to determine when the (HAC)2 was within the FTL or PBL based on timeseries of the height of the PBL. During the (HAC)2 cloud events we sample a mixture of interstitial aerosol and droplet residues, which we characterize using a new approach that utilizes the in-situ droplet measurements to determine time periods where the aerosol sample is purely interstitial. From the dataset we determine the properties (size distribution and hygroscopicity) of the pre-cloud, activated and interstitial aerosol. The hygroscopicity of activated aerosol is found to be higher than that of the interstitial or pre-cloud aerosol. A series of closure studies with the droplet parameterization shows that cloud droplet concentration (N d) and supersaturation can be predicted to within 25 % of observations when the aerosol size distributions correspond to pre-cloud conditions. Analysis of the characteristic supersaturation of each aerosol population indicates that droplet formation in clouds is aerosol-limited when formed in FTL airmasses – hence droplet formation is driven by aerosol variations, while clouds formed in the PBL tend to be velocity limited and droplet variations are driven by fluctuations in vertical velocity. Given that the cloud dynamics do not vary significantly between airmasses, the variation in aerosol concentration and type is mostly responsible for these shifts in cloud microphysical state and sensitivity to aerosol. With these insights, remote sensing of cloud droplets in such clouds can be used to infer either CCN spectra (when in the FTL) or vertical velocity (when in the PBL). In conclusion, we show that a coordinated measurement of aerosol and cloud properties, together with the novel analysis approaches presented here allow for the determination of the drivers of droplet formation in orographic clouds and their sensitivity to aerosol and vertical velocity variations. Since 2018, the Aeolus satellite of the European Space Agency (ESA) has acquired wind HLOS (horizontal line-of-sight) profiles throughout the troposphere and up to the lower stratosphere, filling a critical gap in the Global Observing System (GOS). Aeolus, carrying ALADIN (Atmospheric LAser Doppler INstrument), the first UV HSRL (High Spectral Resolution Lidar) Doppler lidar ever placed in space, provides also vertically resolved optical properties of particulates (aerosols and clouds). The present study focuses on the assessment of Aeolus L2A particulate backscatter coefficient (baseline 2A11), retrieved by the Standard Correct Algorithm (SCA), in the eastern Mediterranean, a region hosting a variety of aerosol species. Ground-based retrievals acquired by lidar instruments operating in Athens (central Greece), Thessaloniki (northern Greece) and Antikythera (southwestern Greece) serve as reference. All lidar stations provide routine measurements to the PANACEA (PANhellenic infrastructure for Atmospheric Composition and climatE chAnge) network. A set of ancillary data, including sun-photometric observations (AERONET), reanalysis products (CAMS and MERRA-2), satellite observations (MSG-SEVIRI and MODIS Aqua) and backward-trajectories modelling (FLEXPART), is utilized towards an optimum characterization of the probed atmospheric conditions under the absence of a classification scheme in Aeolus SCA profiles. First, emphasis is given on the assessment of Aeolus SCA backscatter coefficient under specific aerosol scenarios over Antikythera island. Due to the misdetection of the cross-polar component of the backscattered lidar signal, Aeolus underestimates the aerosol backscatter coefficient by up to 33 % when non-spherical mineral particles are recorded (10 July 2019). A good performance is revealed on 3 July 2019, when horizontally homogeneous loads of fine spherical particles are confined below 4 km. For other two cases (8 July 2020 and 5 August 2020), due to noise issues, the SCA performance degrades in terms of depicting the stratification of aerosol layers composed of particles of different origin. According to the statistical assessment analysis of 43 identified cases, a poor-to-moderate performance is revealed for the unfiltered (aerosols plus clouds) SCA profiles, which improves substantially when cloud-contaminated profiles are excluded from the collocated sample. This improvement is evident at both Aeolus vertical scales (regular scales have 24 bins and mid-bin scales have 23 bins), and it is justified by the drastic reduction in the bias (from 0.45 to 0.27 Mm -1 sr -1 for SCA and from 0.69 to 0.37 Mm -1 sr -1 for SCA mid-bin) and root mean square error (from 2.00 to 1.65 Mm -1 sr -1 for SCA and from 1.88 to 1.00 Mm -1 sr -1 for SCA mid-bin) scores. In the vertical, the SCA performance degrades at the lowermost bins due to either the contamination from surface signals or the increased noise levels for the aerosol retrievals. Among the three PANACEA stations, the best agreement is found at the remote site of Antikythera with respect to the urban sites of Athens and Thessaloniki. Finally, all key Cal/Val (calibration and validation) aspects necessary for future relevant studies, the recommendations for a possible Aeolus follow-on mission and an overview of the ongoing related activities are thoroughly discussed. According to the statistical assessment analysis for 46 identified cases, it is revealed a poor-to- moderate performance for the unfiltered (aerosols plus clouds) Aeolus profiles which improves substantially when cloud contaminated profiles are excluded from the collocated sample. This positive tendency is evident at both Aeolus vertical scales (regular, 24 bins and mid-bin, 23 bins) and it is justified by the drastic reduction of the bias and root-mean-square-error scores. In vertical, Aeolus performance downgrades at the lowermost bins (attributed to either the surface reflectance or the increased noise levels for the Aeolus retrievals and to the overlap issues for the ground-based profiles). Among the three PANACEA stations, the best agreement is found at the remote site of Antikythera with respect to the urban sites of Athens and Thessaloniki. Finally, all key Cal/Val aspects necessary for future relevant studies, the recommendations for a possible Aeolus follow-on mission and an overview of the ongoing related activities are thoroughly discussed. In this study we investigate the climatological behavior of the aerosol optical properties over Thessaloniki during the years 2003-2017. For this purpose, measurements of two independent instruments, a lidar and a sunphotometer, were used. These two instruments represent two individual networks, the European Lidar Aerosol Network (EARLINET) and the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET). They include different measurement schedules. Fourteen years of lidar and sunphotometer measurements were analyzed, independently of each other, in order to obtain the annual cycles and trends of various optical and geometrical aerosol properties in the boundary layer, in the free troposphere, and for the whole atmospheric column. The analysis resulted in consistent statistically significant and decreasing trends of aerosol optical depth (AOD) at 355 nm of -23.2 and -22.3% per decade in the study period over Thessaloniki for the EARLINET and the AERONET datasets, respectively. Therefore, the analysis indicates that the EARLINET sampling schedule can be quite effective in producing data that can be applied to long-term climatological studies. It is also shown that the observed decreasing trend is mainly attributed to changes in the aerosol load inside the boundary layer. Seasonal profiles of the most dominant aerosol mixture types observed over Thessaloniki have been generated from the lidar data. The higher values of the vertically resolved extinction coefficient at 355 nm appear in summer, while the lower ones appear in winter. The dust component is more dominant in the free troposphere than in the boundary layer during summer. The biomass burning layers tend to arrive in the free troposphere during spring and summer. This kind of information can be quite useful for applications that require a priori aerosol profiles. For instance, they can be utilized in models that require aerosol climatological data as input, in the development of algorithms for satellite products, and also in passive remote-sensing techniques that require knowledge of the aerosol vertical distribution. Mean optical and microphysical aerosol properties of long-range transported biomass burning (BB) particles and mixtures are presented from a 9-year (2011–2019) data set of multiwavelength Raman lidar data, obtained by the EOLE lidar over the city of Athens (37.58° N, 23.47° E), Greece. We studied 34 aerosol layers characterized as: (1) smoke; (2) smoke + continental polluted, and (3) smoke + mixed dust. We found, mainly, small-sized aerosols with mean backscatter-related (355 nm/532 nm, 532 nm/1064 nm) values and Ångström exponent (AE) values in the range 1.4–1.7. The lidar ratio (LR) value at 355 nm was found to be 57 ± 10 sr, 51 ± 5 sr, and 38 ± 9 sr for the aerosol categories (1), (2), and (3), respectively; while at 532 nm, we observed LR values of 73 ± 11 sr, 59 ± 10 sr, and 62 ± 12 for the same categories. Regarding the retrieved microphysical properties, the effective radius (reff) ranged from 0.24 ± 0.11 to 0.24 ± 0.14 μm for all aerosol categories, while the volume density (vd) ranged from 8.6 ± 3.2 to 20.7 ± 14.1 μm−3cm−3 with the higher values linked to aerosol categories (1) and (2); the real part of the refractive index (mR) ranged between 1.49 and 1.53, while for the imaginary part (mI), we found values within 0.0108 i and 0.0126 i. Finally, the single scattering albedo (SSA) of the propped particles varied from 0.915 to 0.936 at all three wavelengths (355–532–1064 nm). The novelty of this study is the provision of typical values of BB aerosol properties from the UV to the near IR, which can be used in forecasting the aerosol climatic effects in the European region. The PANhellenic infrastructure for Atmospheric Composition and climate change (PANACEA) campaign took place in July 2019, to assess the presence of aerosols both in situ and at different heights, in selected cities of Greece suffering from high air pollution levels. One of these sites was the city of Volos (39.21° N., 22.57° E). Vertical profiles of the aerosol backscatter coefficient (b aer) and the particle linear depolarization ratio (δ p) of maritime polluted, urban, smoke and dust mixtures were measured during using the mobile depolarization Aerosol lIdAr System (AIAS). 42 aerosol layers were characterized, out of which 40% were of urban origin, 26% of smoke origin, 21% maritime polluted aerosol layers and 12% dust mixtures. The maritime polluted and urban aerosols showed a mean δ p value at 532 nm of 4 ± 1%, within a range of 2–6% and 2–5%, respectively. The smoke aerosols showed a mean δ p value of 6 ± 1%, within a range of 3–9%, while the dust mixtures showed a mean δ p of 20 ± 4%, ranging from 13 to 29%. Finally, the majority of these layers were observed above 250 up to 2000 m height asl., although the dust mixtures reached 3000 m height asl. • Vertical profiles of the b aer and the δ p of maritime polluted, urban, smoke and dust mixture aerosols. • The maritime polluted and urban aerosols showed a mean δ p at 532 nm of 4±1 %, within a range of 2-6 % and 2-5 %, respectively. • The smoke aerosols showed a mean δ p value of 6±1 %, within a range of 3-9 %. • The dust mixtures showed a mean δ p of 20±4 %, ranging from 13 to 29 %.
