High‐resolution records from past interglacial climates help constrain future responses to global warming, yet are rare. Here, we produce seasonally resolved climate records from subarctic‐Canada using micron‐scale measurements of oxygen isotopes (δ18O) in speleothems with apparent annual growth bands from three interglacial periods—Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 11, 9, and 5e. We find 3‰ lower δ18O values during MIS 11 than MIS 5e, despite MIS 11 likely being warmer. We explore controls on high‐latitude speleothem δ18O and suggest low MIS 11 δ18O values reflect greater contribution of cold‐season precipitation to dripwater from longer annual ground thaw durations. Other potential influences include changes in precipitation source and/or increased fraction of cold‐season precipitation from diminished sea ice in MIS 11. Our study highlights the potential for high‐latitude speleothems to yield detailed isotopic records of Northern Hemisphere interglacial climates beyond the reach of Greenland ice cores and offers a framework for interpreting them. Plain Language Summary: Few climate records pre‐dating the last ice age exist from high‐latitude North America, which inhibits our understanding of how regions with permafrost responded to past warming and how they might change in the future. Here, we help fill this data gap by using six speleothems (cave mineral deposits) from a cave in the Northwest Territories, Canada to produce climate records that span thousands of years during former warm periods of Earth's history. We find that speleothems that grew during an exceptionally warm super‐interglacial period 400,000 years ago have 3‰ lower oxygen isotope (δ18O) values compared to those that grew during a likely cooler interglacial 125,000 years ago. We explore potential explanations for the difference in δ18O across interglacials, and suggest that lower δ18O values during warmer periods reflect greater infiltration of cool‐season precipitation with longer annual ground thaw durations. This study highlights the importance of high‐latitude speleothems to provide detailed climate records beyond the range available from Greenland ice cores. Reconstructing past climate seasonality is fundamental to understanding the nature of past climate changes. This is especially true in the Arctic, where climate is intensely seasonal and proxies that can distinguish climate conditions of multiple seasons in a single year are relatively rare. We propose that submerged aquatic mosses, which are abundant subfossils in some Arctic lake sediments and have distinctive seasonal growth morphologies, can be used to estimate past lake water oxygen isotope composition (δ18O lw) across multiple seasons. Aquatic mosses are abundant, well preserved, and grow continuously in Arctic lakes whenever light is available, with some species displaying unique seasonal morphologies influenced by water temperature. Although Greenland paleorecords suggest that aquatic moss oxygen isotope values (δ18O om) reflect the δ18O values of lake water, no modern calibration between δ18O om and δ18O lw exists in Greenland. We present a modern δ18O om vs. δ18O lw calibration using multiple moss species or morphotypes from eight lakes and ponds near Pituffik (Thule), northwest Greenland. We find strong linear relationships (r2 = 0.76-0.85) between the δ18O om and δ18O lw values of multiple species or morphotypes across the range of relatively low δ18O lw values at Pituffik, and our results indicate isotopic fractionations are similar to those found previously at lower latitudes. To assess the potential of mosses as archives of seasonal δ18O lw values, we analyzed δ18O om in season-specific segments of moss strands, with seasons identified based upon growth morphology. Moss inferred lake water δ18O values (δ18O lwom) are higher in autumn than spring or summer, likely due to increasing contributions of 18O enriched precipitation and the cumulative effects of lake water evaporation throughout the ice-free season. For moss subsampled throughout summer, δ18O lwom values generally increased through the season in parallel with observed δ18O lw values. Potential temperature dependent fractionation effects during biosynthesis, however, remain unconstrained and should be further addressed with future research. Holocene paleotemperature records from ice-free margins of Greenland suggest spatiotemporal heterogeneity in the timing of key climate transitions following retreat of the Greenland Ice Sheet. However, the paucity of high-resolution climate records from this region limits our understanding of the timing, spatial variation, and drivers of Holocene climate variability. Here, we present a middle to late Holocene climate reconstruction based on δ18O of aquatic invertebrate (chironomid and cladoceran) remains and sediment geochemistry from lake sediments to elucidate millennial to submillennial-scale drivers of climate in southwestern Greenland. We establish that our site, Arrowhead Lake, is a through-flowing basin with an integrated signal of annual meteoric water with no evidence of significant evaporative enrichment. Core sediment geochemistry captures the transition from minerogenic-dominated to organic-rich sediments ∼8 cal ka BP. Chitin-based δ18O measurements of both chironomid head capsules and ephippia exhibit similar temporal variability through the record, broadly decreasing from 8.2 cal ka BP to present, concurrent with decreasing summer insolation and regional Neoglacial cooling. A simplified assumption that temperature is the sole driver of changes in isotopes of precipitation yields an estimated average temperature change from the middle to late Holocene at Arrowhead Lake of 2.1–3.0 °C, comparable to existing estimates of middle to late Holocene temperature decline in western Greenland. Depleted δ18O values after 3.3 cal ka BP correspond to the onset of Neoglacial cooling and independent evidence for a slowdown of the West Greenland Current, and suggests that both temperature and sea-ice variability were important controls on isotopic variability at this site. Highly depleted isotopic values at 8.2 cal ka BP followed by high isotopic variability in the early part of the middle Holocene suggests that our record may capture regional 8.2 ka cooling. Using transient climate forcing based on simulations from the Alfred Wegener Institute Earth System Model (AWI-ESM), we simulate the evolution of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) from the last interglacial (125 ka, kiloyear before present) to 2100 AD with the Parallel Ice Sheet Model (PISM). The impact of paleoclimate, especially Holocene climate, on the present and future evolution of the GrIS is explored. Our simulations of the past show close agreement with reconstructions with respect to the recent timing of the peaks in ice volume and the climate of Greenland. The maximum and minimum ice volume at around 18–17 ka and 6–5 ka lag the respective extremes in climate by several thousand years, implying that the ice volume response of the GrIS strongly lags climatic changes. Given that Greenland's climate was getting colder from the Holocene Thermal Maximum (i.e., 8 ka) to the Pre-Industrial era, our simulation implies that the GrIS experienced growth from the mid-Holocene to the industrial era. Due to this background trend, the GrIS still gains mass until the second half of the 20th century, even though anthropogenic warming begins around 1850 AD. This is also in agreement with observational evidence showing mass loss of the GrIS does not begin earlier than the late 20th century. Our results highlight that the present evolution of the GrIS is not only controlled by the recent climate changes, but is also affected by paleoclimate, especially the relatively warm Holocene climate. We propose that the GrIS was not in equilibrium throughout the entire Holocene and that the slow response to Holocene climate needs to be represented in ice sheet simulations in order to predict ice mass loss, and therefore sea level rise, accurately. The future response of the Antarctic ice sheet to rising temperatures remains highly uncertain. A useful period for assessing the sensitivity of Antarctica to warming is the Last Interglacial (LIG) (129 to 116 ky), which experienced warmer polar temperatures and higher global mean sea level (GMSL) (+6 to 9 m) relative to present day. LIG sea level cannot be fully explained by Greenland Ice Sheet melt (~2 m), ocean thermal expansion, and melting mountain glaciers (~1 m), suggesting substantial Antarctic mass loss was initiated by warming of Southern Ocean waters, resulting from a weakening Atlantic meridional overturning circulation in response to North Atlantic surface freshening. Here, we report a blue-ice record of ice sheet and environmental change from the Weddell Sea Embayment at the periphery of the marine-based West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS), which is underlain by major methane hydrate reserves. Constrained by a widespread volcanic horizon and supported by ancient microbial DNA analyses, we provide evidence for substantial mass loss across the Weddell Sea Embayment during the LIG, most likely driven by ocean warming and associated with destabilization of subglacial hydrates. Ice sheet modeling supports this interpretation and suggests that millennial-scale warming of the Southern Ocean could have triggered a multimeter rise in global sea levels. The cave site of Lapa do Picareiro, Portugal contains a deep (~10 m) sedimentary sequence representing much of the Middle and Upper Paleolithic, with abundant animal bones, lithic/bone/shell artifacts, and charcoal/ash in hearths. A deposition model based on 49 radiocarbon ages demonstrates average sedimentation rates of 0.1–0.3 mm a −1 between 9 and 45 ka. Extrapolation suggests an age at the base of the excavation of 65–78 ka. The cave sediments are primarily limestone éboulis derived from roof spalling, and muddy fine sediment derived from weathered soil infiltrating through bedrock joints and crevices. Bone preservation in the cave is good and disturbance by bioturbation, dissolution, or erosional processes appears to be limited. Most sedimentological parameters vary conservatively with depth, indicating stable sediment sources over time. Several parameters show good agreement with paleoclimate records over the radiocarbon‐dated section. The cold‐arid Heinrich stadials are represented by coarse‐clast beds with little fine sediment and magnetic susceptibility minima, and mild Greenland interstadials correspond with muddy beds and sharp peaks in magnetic susceptibility. This study complements ongoing archaeological excavation at the site and confirms that the sequence has the proper age, resolution, and preservation to inform on Late Pleistocene cultural and climatic transitions. Investigations of chronology play a key role in the majority of archaeological research endeavors and are particularly pertinent to examinations of culture-environment relationships, especially during periods characterized by rapid and marked climatic variability and environmental reorganization. Rigorous evaluations of available data and robust methods are required if one wishes to reconstruct reliable chronologies, and this is especially the case when examining periods that are associated with a relatively few radiometric measurements. Such is the case for the Upper Paleolithic archaeological record documented in present-day France from 32,000 to 21,000 calibrated years BP. We take into account critically examined radiocarbon measurements from contextually secure archaeological contexts and employ a recently-developed method of Hierarchical Bayesian Modeling to reconstruct the chronology of archaeological cultures from the Middle Gravettian to the Badegoulian. The calculated chronological intervals for each typo-technologically defined culture phase are compared to the Greenland ice core climatic record and a terrestrial paleoenvironmental record from Bergsee Lake (Southern Germany)—itself expressed in calendar years calculated with the same calibration curve employed in our age model—thereby permitting each archaeological culture to be correlated accurately with documented paleoclimatic variability. • Robust chronologies are needed to correlate past cultures with climate variability. • A recently-developed method of Hierarchical Bayesian Modeling is employed. • Temporal intervals for archaeological cultures are determined with this method. • Arguments are presented as to why this new Bayesian method is preferable. Ravine slopes at the recently discovered Nesseltalgraben site in southeastern Germany provide a unique last glacial sediment record for the Northern Calcareous Alps. The 21 m-long profile is dominated by fine-grained lacustrine-palustrine sediments overlain by several metres of glacifluvial gravels and lodgement tills of the Last Glacial Maximum and underlain by a diamicton. The age model includes 29 radiocarbon analyses and one paleomagnetic anomaly (Laschamp event) together providing a modelled age range from c. 59 to 29.6 ka cal BP, i.e. Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3. Apart from a description of the lithofacies, X-ray-fluorescence (XRF) scanning and elemental analyses provide high-resolution records of the geochemical composition. Multivariate analyses of XRF data separate Ca from other major elements. Carbonate contents, represented by Ca and total inorganic carbon, reach maxima in repeatedly occurring calcareous silty to sandy layers and are related to glacigenic origin. These indicate repeated inner-alpine local glaciations during stadials of MIS 3. Scanning electron microscopy and XRF data confirm the detrital origin of these layers. In contrast, organic matter and elements more resistant to chemical weathering (Si, Ti, Zr) accumulated during interstadials and concurrently elevated Rb/Sr ratios indicate intensified weathering. The high-frequency proxy variations determined for Nesseltalgraben reflect interstadial-stadial climate variability comparable with oxygen-isotope records from Greenland ice cores and Alpine speleothems. Thus, Nesseltalgraben is among the very few independently dated sediment records from continental Europe covering the entire MIS 3 and reflecting the full Dansgaard-Oeschger climate variability. • A 21 m sediment profile from the northern Alps provides a complete MIS 3 record. • Repeated inner Alpine glaciations are indicated by calcareous silt layers. • Geochemical variations reflect interstadials and stadials. • The Nesseltalgraben record resembles Dansgaard-Oeschger climate variability. Millennial-scale Dansgaard Oeschger (DO) variability at northern high latitudes has influenced climatic and environmental conditions in the Mediterranean during the last glacial period. There is evidence that the hemispheric transmission of the DO variability occurred at the end of DO event 25; however, the exact timing and the trigger that activated the environmental response in the Mediterranean remains incompletely understood. Here, we provide evidence that the clear millennial-scale teleconnection between Greenland and the Mediterranean started at ∼111.4 ka BP and was initiated by a sub-millennial scale cooling in Greenland (GI-25b). High-resolution sediment proxies and the pollen record of Lago Grande di Monticchio (MON), Italy, reflect climatic instability during the last millennium of the last interglacial, which was characterised by a first and short cooling episode (MON 1) at 111.44 ± 0.69 ka BP, coinciding with the Greenland cold sub-event GI-25b in duration and timing (within dating uncertainties). MON and Greenland (NorthGRIP ice core) also agree in recording a subsequent warm rebound phase that abruptly culminated in the stadial MON 2/GS-25, marking the transition into the last glacial period. In this study, we present the results of independent component analysis (ICA) of previously published Lake Van data covering the last 250 kyr BP, to shed light on the precipitation and temperature regime in eastern Anatolia. The data processed were the element intensities of Ca, Fe, K, Mn, and Si analyzed by XRF core scanner; concentrations of TOC and CaCO 3 content; and B* (color reflectance) from the Ahlat Ridge sediment record. Our analysis is based on application of ICA on the data by changing the initial random unit vector several times and clustering possible independent components through average-link agglomeration. As components extracted by ICA do not have a hierarchy, mutual information, which is a measure of information content between two random variables, is used as a measure of similarity by which to select candidate components. As a result, we argue, the independent component (Van-IC8), which shows the highest similarity to the Greenland δ 18 O record and visually similar to other regional temperature indicating data, can be read as a proxy for temperature variability. We also assert that the independent component (Van-IC7) which has the highest similarity to B* and visually similar to other regional precipitation proxies, and with the lake level reconstruction from another sediment profile from Lake Van is a proxy of precipitation variability across the region. Our results show that the region's temperature approximately maps onto global records, i.e. warm during interglacials and cold during stadials. However, the precipitation proxy reveals that the region was not dry, or at least as wet as it is today, during the end of the MIS 6 and the LGM. Abstract We present new sedimentological and environmental magnetic records spanning ∼3.2–2.2 Ma, during the intensification of Northern Hemisphere glaciation, from North Atlantic Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Site U1307 on Eirik Drift. Our new datasets and their high-fidelity age control demonstrate that while inland glaciers – and potentially also at times restricted iceberg-calving margins – have likely existed on southern Greenland since at least ∼3.2 Ma, persistent and extensive iceberg-calving glacial margins were only established in this region at 2.72 Ma, ∼300 kyr later than in northeastern and eastern Greenland. Despite a dramatic increase in Greenland-sourced ice-rafted debris deposition on Eirik Drift at this time, contemporaneous changes in the bulk magnetic properties of Site U1307 sediments, and a reduction in sediment accumulation rates, suggest a decrease in the delivery of Greenland-sourced glaciofluvial silt to our study site. We attribute these changes to a shift in depositional regime from bottom-current-dominated to glacial-IRD-dominated between ∼2.9 and 2.7 Ma, in response to a change in the depth of the flow path of the Western Boundary Undercurrent relative to our study site. Abstract According to the findings of a complex radiocarbon dated sedimentological, geochemical, anthracological, phytolite, malacological study implemented on an open 1036 cm wind-blown sand, loess, sandy loess and fossil soils profile of western part of brickyard at Katymár village in Hungary. Increased boreal mixed-leaved forest steppe and temperate grassland cover characterized the interstadials in the SE Great Hungarian Plain during the terminal phase of MIS3 stage and MIS2 stage. These interstadials correlate well with the Dansgaard-Oeschger (DO) interstadials 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and the post LGM warm interval (DO1) seen in the Greenland ice core oxygen isotope records. Intervening cold phases, on the other hand, their start correlating with Heinrich event 1, 2, 3, 4 and the LGM. These data overall confirm that millennial scale climate variability during MIS3 and MIS2 stages had profound effect on the terrestrial ecosystems in the continental interior of SE Europe leading to periodic mixed-leaved boreal forest steppe within mosaic structure expansions in the interstadias and cold steppe, taiga and tundra like spots mosaic and mixed vegetation expansion in the stadial phases. 1400–1500 year long drier interstadial and humid, extended vegetation covered stadial periods interchanged at Katymár sequence, therefore the vegetation and fauna development was different from the Atlantic and Central European schemes and inferred an independent local and regional South Carpathian Basin trend. Abstract Lake Sihailongwan in Jilin province, NE China, provides the first continuous and almost entirely seasonally laminated sediment record on the East Asian mainland comprising the complete Holocene, the Late-glacial period, and large parts of the Last Glacial. Sediment and palynological proxy data provide a finely resolved regional environmental history of the East Asian monsoon. A varve-based chronology (shl-vc2) has been established for the last 65,000 years and allows a detailed comparison with other long regional and global palaeoclimate records. Vegetation density of the study area depends, on the long run, on precessionally forced insolation changes, with superimposed millennial-scale variability during the Last Glacial. Periodic increase of organic carbon content and thermophilous tree species like Ulmus and Fraxinus and contemporary decrease of shrub Alnus precisely mirror millennial-scale climatic variations primarily known from Greenland ice-cores as Dansgaard-Oeschger cycles, as well as Late-glacial period climate changes. Percentages of trees & shrubs pollen and in particular lake productivity-related data reveal substantial differences between interstadial intensities, with those between 50 and 60 ka BP being more pronounced than the following ones. Abstract A stalagmite (FR16) from Frasassi Cave, located near the Adriatic coast of the Italian peninsula, offers a 16 kyr petrographic and stable isotope record spanning from 112.8 ± 1.5 ka to 96.6 ± 1.0 ka, corresponding to the interval from marine isotope stage (MIS) 5c to MIS 5d. The physical characteristics of FR16 calcite, allowed for a thorough understanding of the processes controlling isotopic changes, because fabrics as well are controlled by the environmental parameters within the cave that reflect external climate forcing. The FR16 δ13C profile matches fabric changes where columnar fabric usually corresponds to more negative values and micrite/microsparite layers to less negative δ13C values, and with the North Greenland Ice-core Project (NGRIP) δ18O record with more negative δ13C values during interstadials GI24 and GI23. This suggests a hydrological sensitivity for the two proxies, and their variability can be linked to recharge changes. On the other hand, the response to Greenland events appears subdued in the δ18O record and the trend mimics instead the Northern Hemisphere (NH) summer insolation with more negative δ18O values corresponding to the maximum insolation centred at ca. 105 ka. This behaviour can be explained by the higher sensitivity of δ18O to rainfall seasonality, moisture source and trajectories, whose combined effect attenuated the stadials/intersadials signal in the stalagmite. Abstract Newly acquired U Th dates on gypsum sands contained within Pleistocene lake sediments allow us to extend the record of climatic change in the Estancia Basin of central New Mexico back to ∼69 ka from a previous limit of ∼29 ka. Using a hydrologic balance index (HBI) that reflects variations in sediment mineralogy and bedding characteristics, we find strong similarities to speleothem oxygen isotopic records for the southwestern United States as well as to isotopic variations in Greenland ice cores. Intervals of wetter climate in the Estancia Basin generally appear to correlate to colder conditions in the North Atlantic and conversely. The existence of a pronounced dry period from 18.1 to 17 ka matches in timing the Extrapolar Climate Reversal of Asmerom et al. (2017) at Fort Stanton cave in southern New Mexico and confirms a different origin for this stadial-like event. Furthermore, the new U Th dates support the existing Estancia Basin interpretation of a dry Bølling/Allerød followed by a wet Younger Dryas, a result consistent with speleothem and wet meadow evidence from New Mexico and Arizona (Asmerom et al., 2010, 2017; Polyak et al., 2004; Hall et al., 2012; Wagner et al., 2010) but in conflict with an interpretation of speleothem evidence from central Texas (Feng et al., 2014). The investigation of trough mouth fans (TMFs), important paleoclimatic archives on mid- and high-latitude continental margins, has so far mainly been based on the integration of various types of acoustic data supplemented with short sediments cores. In consequence, sedimentological and chronological data about parts of TMFs deposited prior to the Last Glacial Maximum remains sparse. Here, we re-evaluate the upper part of ODP Site 987 drilled on the distal part of the Scoresby Sund TMF on the east Greenland continental margin, which records the former dynamics of the Scoresby Sund sector of the Greenland Ice Sheet. Based on a more detailed sedimentological description than previously available we find that lithological unit I, deposited over the last ~ 2.14 Ma, can be divided into two parts, a lower part dominated by glacimarine and marine deposits including some scattered, sandy turbidites and an upper part of debris flow deposits interbedded with sandy turbidites. The transition between these parts occurred at about 0.99 Ma, i.e. at the same time when the mode of ice-sheet variation changed globally, the average ice sheet size increased significantly and the periodicity of ice-volume variation increased from around 41 ka to approximately 100 ka (the “Mid-Pleistocene Transition”). On the distal Scoresby Sund TMF, this change appears to be reflected through a marked increase in the abundance of sandy turbidity flows accompanied by a longer run-out of some of the debris flows due to the delivery of larger sediment volumes during longer-lasting glacial maxima. Astronomical forcing (obliquity and precession) has been thought to modulate Dansgaard-Oeschger (DO) events, yet the detailed quantification of such modulations has not been examined. In this study, we apply the novel Holo-Hilbert Spectral Analysis (HHSA) to five polar ice core records, quantifying astronomical forcing's time-varying amplitude modulation of DO events and identifying the preferred obliquity phases for large amplitude modulations. The unique advantages of HHSA over the widely used windowed Fourier spectral analysis for quantifying astronomical forcing's nonlinear modulations of DO events is first demonstrated with a synthetic data that closely resembles DO events recorded in Greenland ice cores (NGRIP, GRIP, and GISP2 cores on GICC05 modelext timescale). The analysis of paleoclimatic proxies show that statistically significantly more frequent DO events, with larger amplitude modulation in the Greenland region, tend to occur in the decreasing phase of obliquity, especially from its mean value to its minimum value. In the eastern Antarctic, although statistically significantly more DO events tend to occur in the decreasing obliquity phase in general, the preferred phase of obliquity for large amplitude modulation on DO events is a segment of the increasing phase near the maximum obliquity, implying that the physical mechanisms of DO events may be different for the two polar regions. Additionally, by using cross-spectrum and magnitude-squared analyses, Greenland DO mode at a timescale of about 1400 years leads the Antarctic DO mode at the same timescale by about 1000 years. Paleoclimate proxies are being used in conjunction with ice sheet modeling experiments to determine how the Greenland ice sheet responded to past changes, particularly during the last deglaciation. Although these comparisons have been a critical component in our understanding of the Greenland ice sheet sensitivity to past warming, they often rely on modeling experiments that favor minimizing computational expense over increased model physics. Over Paleoclimate timescales, simulating the thermal structure of the ice sheet has large implications on the modeled ice viscosity, which can feedback onto the basal sliding and ice flow. To accurately capture the thermal field, models often require a high number of vertical layers. This is not the case for the stress balance computation, however, where a high vertical resolution is not necessary. Consequently, since stress balance and thermal equations are generally performed on the same mesh, more time is spent on the stress balance computation than is otherwise necessary. For these reasons, running a higher-order ice sheet model (e.g., Blatter-Pattyn) over timescales equivalent to the paleoclimate record has not been possible without incurring a large computational expense. To mitigate this issue, we propose a method that can be implemented within ice sheet models, whereby the vertical interpolation along the z-axis relies on higher-order polynomials, rather than the traditional linear interpolation. This method is tested within the Ice Sheet System Model (ISSM) using quadratic and cubic finite elements for the vertical interpolation on an idealized case and a realistic Greenland configuration. A transient experiment for the ice thickness evolution of a single dome ice sheet demonstrates improved accuracy using the higher-order vertical interpolation compared to models using the linear vertical interpolation, despite having fewer degrees of freedom. This method is also shown to improve a models ability to capture sharp thermal gradients in an ice sheet particularly close to the bed, when compared to models using a linear vertical interpolation. This is corroborated in a thermal steady-state simulation of the Greenland ice sheet using a higher-order model. In general, we find that using a higherorder vertical interpolation decreases the need for a high number of vertical layers, while dramatically reducing model runtime for transient simulations. Results indicate that when using a higher-order vertical interpolation, runtimes for a transient ice sheet relaxation are upwards of 10 to 57 times faster than using a model which has a linear vertical interpolation, and thus requires a higher number of vertical layers to achieve a similar result in simulated ice volume, basal temperature, and ice divide thickness. The findings suggest that this method will allow higher-order models to be used in studies investigating ice sheet behavior over paleoclimate timescales at a fraction of the computational cost than would otherwise be needed for a model using a linear vertical interpolation. The "inverse modelling through iterative forward modelling" (IMIFM) approach is used to reconstruct the last deglaciation climates from central equatorial African mountains. Unlike other approaches that use statistical models, it directly incorporates the effects of changes in atmospheric CO 2 concentrations on vegetation through a process-based vegetation model, but the results strongly depend on the model used. Therefore, two generally related but different equilibrium vegetation models are used for evaluating the dependence of the results on the choice of vegetation model. Our climate reconstructions show that long-term temperature increases during the last deglaciation, as seen in Greenland, were absent from many of the target sites. Moreover, there are few common long-term trends of climatic responses during the last deglaciation among central equatorial African mountains' sites despite the relatively close of those sites. No systematic climate responses were also found between the eastern and western sides of the Congo basin. While there is consistency in the long-term trends and their amplitudes regarding temperature reconstructions with both models, there are large differences between the sites in the long-term hydroclimatic reconstructions, particularly during arid periods. This difference may be attributed to the carbon-water use efficiency in the vegetation models. This study implies that the IMIFM approach is effective for climate reconstructions in equatorial African mountains, where modern pollen samples are not plentiful. Ice core records have long indicated that the Younger Dryas began and ended with large, abrupt climate shifts over Greenland. Key climatic features remain unknown, including the magnitude of warming during the Younger Dryas-Holocene transition along with the seasonality and spatial variability of Younger Dryas climate changes across Greenland. Here, we use geochemical and paleoecological proxies from lake sediments at Lake N14 in south Greenland to address these outstanding questions. Radiocarbon dating and diatom assemblages confirm early deglaciation and isolation of Lake N14 before ∼13,600 cal yr BP, consistent with previous work. Oxygen isotope ratios (δ18O) of chironomid head capsules, bulk aquatic moss, and aquatic moss-derived cellulose are used to reconstruct oxygen isotopes of past lake water and annual precipitation. Oxygen isotope proxies indicate annual precipitation δ18O values increased by 5.9–7.7‰ at the end of the Younger Dryas. Following the Younger Dryas, moss and cellulose δ18O values show a clear decline in precipitation δ18O values of 2–3‰ from ∼11,540–11,340 cal yr BP that may correspond with the Preboreal Oscillation. Reconstructed precipitation δ18O values then gradually increased from 11,300–10,100 cal yr BP. All three aquatic organic materials register similar shifts in precipitation δ18O values over time, and they closely parallel the δ18O shifts observed in ice cores. This evidence strongly supports the utility of these methods for reconstructing lake water δ18O, and furthermore precipitation δ18O values where lake water reflects precipitation. The relatively large shift in isotopic composition of precipitation at Lake N14 suggests that shifts in temperature, precipitation seasonality, and/or moisture sources at the end of the Younger Dryas were even larger in south Greenland than they were in central Greenland, most likely because of the proximity to major changes in North Atlantic Ocean circulation. The annual air temperature change estimated at Lake N14 at the end of the Younger Dryas is also very large (∼18 ± 7 °C) compared to the summer warming previously inferred from chironomid species assemblages there (∼6 °C). Millennial-scale climate oscillations of the last ice age registered in Greenland and Antarctic ice cores did not always vary in unison. A striking example is that the strongest Antarctic warming episodes occurred during Heinrich episodes in the North Atlantic region. Although the bipolar seesaw affords a possible explanation for such anti-phasing, it does not account for the equally striking observation that climate varied in unison between the hemispheres about half the time. Such phasing differences suggest the need for an alternative hypothesis in which the polar regions at times responded in unison to common forcing, and at other times left the impression of a bipolar seesaw. We posit that this impression arose from the effect of warmer-than-usual summers on continental ice sheets adjacent to the North Atlantic Ocean during each Heinrich episode. The relatively warm Heinrich summers produced discharges of meltwater and icebergs of sufficient volume to stimulate very cold winter conditions from widespread sea ice on a freshened ocean surface. The intervals between Heinrich episodes featured relaxation of sea-ice-induced winter severity from reduced summertime influx of meltwater and icebergs, indicating relatively cooler summer conditions. It is postulated that the causative variations in freshwater fluxes were driven by a climate signal most evident in Antarctic ice cores but also recognized in other paleoclimate records in both polar hemispheres. Due to a general scarcity of archives and a lack of temporally highly resolved records, the response of Central European ecosystems to abrupt climate change during the Late Pleistocene – and notably the Last Glacial – has remained insufficiently explored. To contribute to a better understanding of the impact of short-term climate variability on ecosystems in Central Europe north of the Alps during that time, we present a new, near-continuous pollen record from Füramoos, southern Germany. Except for a hiatus from 28 to 20 ka BP, the record spans the past 130 kyrs in centennial-scale resolution. Our pollen dataset is augmented by sedimentological (i.e., XRF core scanning, loss on ignition, and maceral analysis) and macrobotanical data. This new record represents the yet most complete, temporally highest resolved reconstruction of terrestrial ecosystem dynamics in Central Europe for the Last Glacial period. Our results show that temperate forests thrived at Füramoos during full interglacial conditions (i.e., MIS 5e and MIS 1), boreal forests developed during the early glaciation (MIS 5 d–5a), and a tundra vegetation prevailed during full glacial conditions (MIS 4–2). Fourteen transient expansions (contractions) of tree and shrub populations that are synchronous with increases (decreases) in weathering intensity can be firmly attributed to specific Greenland Interstadials (Greenland Stadials) of the NGRIP ice-core record. By comparing individual expansions/contractions of tree and shrub populations with Greenland δ18O ice ice-core and North Atlantic sea-surface temperature (SST) data, we show that during interstadials vegetation dynamics in Central Europe were closely linked to SSTs in the North Atlantic and decoupled from the climate recorded in Greenland; during stadials, the opposite pattern prevailed. The sensitivity of the climate system to changes in radiative forcing is crucial for our understanding of past and future climates. Especially important are feedbacks related to melting of ice sheets like the Greenland ice sheet (GIS) and its potential impact on the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC). These effects are likely to delay and dampen predicted long-term warming trends. Estimates of climate sensitivity may be deduced from palaeoclimate-reconstructions, but this raises the question whether past climate sensitivity is applicable to the future. Therefore we have analysed the impact of GIS melt water on the AMOC strength in two past warm climates (last interglacial and early present interglacial) and three future scenarios with three different model parameter sets. These model parameter sets represent three different model sensitivities to freshwater perturbation: low, moderate and high. In both the moderate and high sensitivity versions, we find for lower GIS melt rates (below 54 mSv, Sv = 10 m/s) a clear difference between past and future warm climates in the sensitivity of the AMOC to GIS melt. This difference is connected to the convective activity in the Labrador Sea and the amount of additional surface freshening due to sea ice melting. In contrast, for higher GIS melt rates (over 54 mSv) we find similar reductions of the AMOC strength in all cases. Considering the low sensitivity version of our model, we find that for all GIS melt rates the influence of freshwater forcing on the AMOC is independent of the background climate. Our results and implications are thus strongly determined by the parameter set considered in our model. Nonetheless, our results from two out of three model versions suggest that proxy-based reconstructions of past AMOC sensitivity to GIS melt are likely to be misleading if interpreted for future applications. To determine the long-term sensitivity of the Greenland ice sheet to a warmer climate, we explored how it responded to the Holocene thermal maximum (8-5 cal. kyr B.P.; calibrated to calendar years before present, i.e., A.D. 1950), when lake records show that local atmospheric temperatures in Greenland were 2-4 °C warmer than the present. Records from five new threshold lakes complemented with existing geological data from south of 70°N show that the ice margin was retracted behind its present-day extent in all sectors for a limited period between ca. 7 and 4 cal. kyr B.P. and in most sectors from ca. 1.5 to 1 cal. kyr B.P., in response to higher atmospheric and ocean temperatures. Ice sheet simulations constrained by observations show good correlation with the timing of minimum ice volume indicated by the threshold lake observations; the simulated volume reduction suggests a minimum contribution of 0.16 m sea-level equivalent from the entire Greenland ice sheet, with a centennial ice loss rate of as much as 100 Gt/yr for several millennia during the Holocene thermal maximum. Our results provide an estimate of the long-term rates of volume loss that can be expected in the future as regional air and ocean temperatures approach those reconstructed for the Holocene thermal maximum. Abstract: The Greenland Ice Sheet is a major component of the Arctic cryosphere and the magnitude of its response to future climate changes remains uncertain. Longer-term records of climate near the ice sheet margin provide information about natural climate variability and can be used to understand the causes of past changes in the Greenland Ice Sheet. As a proxy for Holocene climate near the ice sheet margin, we reconstruct the fluctuations of Bregne ice cap in the Scoresby Sund region of central east Greenland. Bregne is a small ice cap (2.5 km2 in area) and responds sensitively to summer temperatures. We employ a multi-proxy approach to reconstruct the ice cap fluctuations using geomorphic mapping, 10Be ages of boulders and bedrock and lake sediment records. Past extents of Bregne ice cap are marked by moraines and registered by sediments in downvalley lakes. 10Be ages of bedrock and boulders outboard of the moraines indicate that Bregne ice cap was within ∼250 m of its present-day limit by at least 10.7 ka. Multi-proxy data from sediments in Two Move lake, located downvalley from Bregne ice cap, indicate that the ice cap likely completely disappeared during early and middle Holocene time. Increasing magnetic susceptibility and percent clastic material from ∼6.5 to ∼1.9 cal ka BP in Two Move lake sediments suggest progressively colder conditions and increased snow accumulation on the highlands west of the lake. Laminated silt deposited at ∼2.6 cal ka BP and ∼1.9 cal ka BP to present registers the onset and persistence of Bregne ice cap during the late Holocene. 10Be ages of boulders on an unweathered, unvegetated moraine in the Bregne ice cap forefield range from 0.74 to 9.60 ka. The youngest 10Be age (0.74 ka) likely represents the age of the moraine whereas older ages may be due to 10Be inherited from prior periods of exposure. This late Holocene moraine marks the second largest advance of the ice cap since deglaciation of the region at the end of the last ice age. The oldest moraine in the forefield dates to ≤2.6 cal ka BP. One of the key uncertainties in future sea-level projections is attributed to the Greenland ice sheet (GrIS). Studying the response of the GrIS to climate changes during the past warm periods is helpful for understanding future changes in the GrIS. In this study, using three global climate models (Community Atmosphere Model version 3.1 and version 4.0 and Norwegian Earth System Model) and a three-dimensional ice sheet model, we investigate the climate and ice sheet changes over Greenland during the mid-Pliocene warm period (~3 Ma bp). The results show that the regionally averaged summer temperature over Greenland is 9.4-13.4 °C higher during the mid-Pliocene period than during the pre-industrial era and the annual mean precipitation is 65.2-108.3 mm a greater. In response to this warm-wet climate, the GrIS shows a substantial decrease in size during the mid-Pliocene, with little ice existing along the eastern coast of Greenland. Compared to that simulated in the control run, the global sea level is approximately 7.8-8.1 m higher during the mid-Pliocene due to the decrease in the size of the GrIS. Greenland climate variability is connected to internal and external sources of global climate forcing in six millennium simulations using Community Climate System Model, version 3. The external forcings employed are consistent with the protocols of Paleoclimate Modelling Intercomparison Project Phase 3. Many simulated internal climate modes are characterized over the years 850-1850, including the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC), the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO), the east Atlantic pattern (EA), the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), the North Atlantic sea ice extent, and the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO). Lagged correlation and multivariate regression methods connect Greenland temperatures and precipitation to these internal modes and external sources of climate variability. Greenland temperature and precipitation are found to relate most strongly to North Atlantic sea ice extent, the AMO, and the AMOC, that are themselves strongly interconnected. Furthermore, approximately half of the multidecadal variability in Greenland temperature and precipitation are captured through linear relationships with volcanic aerosol optical depth, solar insolation (including total solar irradiance and local orbital variability), the NAO, the EA, and the PDO. Relationships are robust with volcanic aerosol optical depth, solar insolation, and an index related to latitudinal shifts of the North Atlantic jet. Differences attributable to model resolution are also identified in the results, such as lower variability in the AMOC and Greenland temperature in the higher-resolution simulations. Finally, a regression model is applied to simulations of the industrial period to show that natural sources alone only explain the variability in simulated Greenland temperature and precipitation up to the 1950s and 1970s, respectively. Holocene paleoclimate records from Greenland help us understand the response of the Greenland Ice Sheet and regional oceanic and atmospheric circulation systems to natural climate variability in order to place recent changes in a longer-term perspective. Here biogeochemical analysis of a lake sediment core from southeast Greenland is used to define changes in moisture balance and runoff during the Holocene in a catchment near the margin of the Greenland Ice Sheet. A 1.6 m sediment core that spans the last 8.8 ka was recovered from Flower Valley Lake on Ammassalik Island. Magnetic susceptibility, diatoms, bulk biogeochemical properties (TOC, C/N, δ13Corg), and lipid biomarkers (n-alkanes; C16–C31) reveal changes in clastic sedimentation and the relative input of terrestrial- and aquatic-derived organic matter. Hydrogen isotope values (δD) of mid- (n-C25) and long-chain (n-C29, n-C31) n-alkanes allow reconstruction of δD of precipitation and summertime evaporation of lake water. Following a period of early lake ontogeny and landscape stabilization after deglaciation from 8.4 to 7.0 ka, the mid Holocene, 8.4–4.1 ka, is characterized by greater evaporative enrichment of the lake water as indicated by δD records. After 4.1 ka, there is a decrease in evaporative enrichment of the lake water. There is also an abrupt transition to more variable sedimentation marked by sharp increases in magnetic susceptibility, C/N, δ13Corg, and the concentration of long-chain n-alkanes, showing periodic delivery of terrestrial organic matter and clastic sediment to the lake. Higher insolation during the mid Holocene resulted in a warmer and drier climate with longer ice-free periods in the summer and enhanced evaporation of lake water. The reduction in insolation and colder temperatures during the late Holocene caused a reduction in evaporation of lake water over the last 4.1 ka and was accompanied by periodic increases in surface runoff, which correspond with intervals of cold Greenland Ice Sheet surface temperatures. Abstract: The composition and evolution of the silicate Earth during Hadean/Eoarchean times are widely debated and largely unknown due to the sparse geological record preserved from Earthʼs infancy. The short-lived 146Sm–142Nd chronometer applied to 3.8–3.7 Ga old mantle-derived amphibolites from the Isua Supracrustal Belt (ISB) in southwest Greenland has revealed ubiquitous 142Nd excesses in these rocks compared to modern samples and terrestrial Nd standards. Because the parent isotope, 146Sm, was extant only during the first few hundred million years of Solar System history, this implies derivation of the Greenland samples from a source formed in the Hadean. This mantle source is the oldest yet identified on Earth and therefore provides key information about the nature and evolution of early-differentiated reservoirs. In contrast, modern mantle-derived rocks from around the world do not have 142Nd anomalies, suggesting that the primordial heterogeneities detected in Earthʼs early mantle have been erased over time. In order to better constrain the rate at which early mantle heterogeneities have been re-homogenized, we produced new 146Sm–142Nd data for both 3.8 and 3.3 Ga old mafic rocks from different tectonic domains of the ISB, accompanied by their corresponding 147Sm–143Nd and 176Lu–176Hf systematics. The 3.8 Ga suite yields 142Nd excesses comparable to those detected previously in 3.7 Ga old ISB amphibolites, indicating that Eoarchean mafic ISB lavas originated from sources with similar differentiation histories despite being from different juxtaposed tectonic segments. Conversely, 3.3 Ga old amphibolites from the ISB do not show resolvable 142Nd anomalies compared to terrestrial Nd standards. Since Rizo et al. (2012) reported 142Nd anomalies in 3.4 Ga old ISB samples, the present data suggest that the primordial 142Nd heterogeneities in the Isua mantle disappeared between 3.4 and 3.3 Ga. The present data set consists of samples from a unique location where 500 million years of history of the early terrestrial mantle have been preserved, hence offering an exceptional opportunity to gain new insight into the compositional evolution and dynamic workings of Earthʼs primordial mantle. Geological evidence of paleoclimate conditions provide important constraints on paleoclimate models. Paleowinds are one of the central paleoclimate parameters in global circulation models used to reconstruct past climatic conditions. However, only a few climate proxies such as eolian dunes and shallow-water wave ripples provide information on paleowind directions. In this study, we present new paleoclimatic data based on lacustrine sediments with wave ripple marks in the Upper Triassic Fleming Fjord Group, central East Greenland deposited at very shallow water depth in the northern part of Pangaea in a mid-latitude, warm-temperate climate. Wave-ripple orientations are measured on 380 individual fossilized wave-rippled beds at four localities in the ~8500 km2 lacustrine basin. These ripple data are used to establish a geologic wind proxy and are compared to previously published general circulation models. Two wave ripple orientations are observed: The dominant ripple orientation and wave ripple characteristics indicate paleowinds from the Late Triassic SSE and NNW (154.5° and 334.5°), while a subordinate orientation indicate paleowinds from W or E (270° or 90°). This paleowind regime remained stable for at least ~7.5 million years during the mid-late Norian (218.5-211 Ma). These results correspond very well with some general circulation model results that suggest summer winds from the NNW and winter winds from the SSE. Based on the great compatibility between empirical data and general circulation model results, the wind pattern seems to have been greatly influenced by regional, Late Triassic mountain topography in the present-day Greenland and Norway channeling the paleowind in the northernmost part of the pre-Atlantic rift basin (the mid-Norwegian-east Greenland rift system). Abstract: Data from multiple ice and sediment cores in the North Atlantic show that Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage 3 (MIS 3) was characterized by recurring millennial-scale variations in climate, but the periodic behavior of the well-known millennial-scale variations, Heinrich events and Dansgaard–Oeschger events, is uncertain. We use oxygen isotope values from the Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2 (GISP2) and North Greenland Ice Core Project (NGRIP) ice cores and estimated sea-surface temperature derived from a Bermuda Rise marine sediment core as climate proxies to assess the periodic behavior of Heinrich events and Dansgaard–Oeschger events using Lomb–Scargle spectral decomposition and continuous time autoregressive models. We find that continuous time autoregressive models produce less variable estimates of periodicity for Heinrich events than Lomb–Scargle methods. Heinrich events during MIS 3 are periodic with an estimated periodicity of 6.29–6.49ka in the GISP 2 ice core, 6.71–6.76ka in the marine sediment core, and 7.89–8.23ka in the NGRIP core. There is insufficient evidence from these data to conclude that Dansgaard–Oeschger events exhibit a single periodicity during MIS 3. Abstract: The Peña Larga site, a rock shelter on the southern slopes of the Cantabrian cordillera (north Spain), is an archeological deposit covering nearly 4000years, from the early Neolithic to the middle Bronze Age (Atlantic/Subboreal chronozones). It was used both as a household and as a stable, with a hiatus in the Chalcolithic when it was used as a collective sepulcher. Nearly twenty-eight thousand small vertebrate elements were recovered from its seven stratigraphic units, of which 2553 items were identified to the genus and/or species levels. The assemblage is composed of mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. Of these, small mammals were used for paleoenvironmental reconstruction since they are very sensitive to climatic conditions, the sample sizes are large, and their preservation is good. Their distributions over time, measured in terms of relative abundance, serve as reliable proxies of habitat and climate change. The reconstruction of Peña Larga''s past environments based on small mammals roughly coincides with the pollen and the amphibian/reptile records on the local scale, and with that of an ice core from Central Greenland on the global scale. Spectral analysis is often based on the periodogram and on fitting a first-order autoregressive [AR(1)] process to data as climatological time series generally exhibit red noise spectra that can be well approximated by AR(1) models. When the periodogram exceeds some threshold at a frequency, the spectrum is said to differ from the AR(1) spectrum, and the frequency is generally taken as a member of the discrete spectrum. This traditional technique, however, must not be used without modifications for unevenly spaced data. Our purpose is to provide an AR(1) modeling tool that is more accurate than the TAUEST procedure commonly used for unevenly spaced paleoclimatical records. A periodogram based on an entire least square fit to unevenly spaced data is also introduced instead of the well-known Lomb-Scargle periodogram. The methodology is applied to two paleoclimatological records. Abstract: In recent years, increased awareness of the considerable potential offered by tephrochronology in palaeoclimatic studies has fuelled a renewed interest in the tephra record preserved within the Greenland ice-cores. This renewal has occurred in tandem with the development of continuous flow analysis techniques, which provide high-resolution volcanic aerosol records. These chemical records are of considerable value for identifying tephra horizons composed of glass shards and also provide the basis for a new high-precision ice-core timescale, thus allowing ages to be assigned to volcanic events. Tephra horizons of glass shards in the ice-cores play a critical role for (1) testing and building chronological frameworks for the ice-cores and other sequences, (2) synchronising disparate palaeoclimatic sequences and testing phase relationships, (3) atmospheric pathway reconstruction, and (4) verifying the source of volcanic aerosol peaks. Here we review the results of over 25years of research into tephra horizons in the GRIP, GISP2 and NGRIP cores. We provide high-precision ages for horizons based on recently developed timescales and draw together geochemical characterisations of the products of 45 volcanic events deposited on the Greenland ice sheet and identified in the cores. There is a clear disparity between the number of volcanic aerosol peaks and the number of tephra horizons of glass shards identified thus far. However, this synthesis highlights the critical role of the Greenland ice-cores, firstly in the reconstruction of the history of Icelandic volcanic eruptions, and secondly the considerable value of some tephra horizons in facilitating the correlation of these key climatic archives to North Atlantic marine sequences. Other noteworthy issues include the potential of these cores to preserve tephra horizons from more distal volcanic sources such as North America, to resolve the debate surrounding the Thera eruption, and the observation that some tephra horizons are preserved within the ice without coeval volcanic aerosol signals. During the last interglacial period, ~125,000 years ago, sea level was at least several meters higher than at present, with substantial variability observed for peak sea level at geographically diverse sites. Speculation that the West Antarctic ice sheet collapsed during the last interglacial period has drawn particular interest to understanding climate and ice-sheet dynamics during this time interval. We provide an internally consistent database of coral U-Th ages to assess last interglacial sea-level observations in the context of isostatic modeling and stratigraphic evidence. These data indicate that global (eustatic) sea level peaked 5.5 to 9 meters above present sea level, requiring smaller ice sheets in both Greenland and Antarctica relative to today and indicating strong sea-level sensitivity to small changes in radiative forcing. The Last Interglacial climatic optimum, ca. 128 ka, is the most recent climate interval significantly warmer than present, providing an analogue (albeit imperfect) for ongoing global warming and the effects of Greenland Ice Sheet (GIS) melting on climate over the coming millennium. While some climate models predict an Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) strengthening in response to GIS melting, others simulate weakening, leading to cooling in Europe. Here, we present evidence from new proxy-based paleoclimate and ocean circulation reconstructions that show that the strongest warming in western Europe coincided with maximum GIS meltwater runoff and a weaker AMOC early in the Last Interglacial. By performing a series of climate model sensitivity experiments, including enhanced GIS melting, we were able to simulate this configuration of the Last Interglacial climate system and infer information on AMOC slowdown and related climate effects. These experiments suggest that GIS melt inhibited deep convection off the southern coast of Greenland, cooling local climate and reducing AMOC by ~24% of its present strength. Abstract: Reconstructions of the palaeoclimate of the Early Cretaceous are controversial, varying from a warm-temperate greenhouse world to icehouse conditions. We studied calcareous nannofossil assemblages of sediments from North-East Greenland (Wollaston Forland and Kuhn Ø) of Late Ryazanian–Barremian age in order to better understand the palaeoclimate and palaeoceanography of the high latitudes. The calcareous nannofossil assemblages are characterized by abundant Crucibiscutum spp. and Watznaueria spp., Biscutum constans and other Boreal taxa. They show also influxes of Tethyan and low to mid latitudinal taxa like nannoconids (e.g. Nannoconus bermudezii, Nannoconus dolomiticus, Nannoconus steinmannii), pentaliths (Micrantholithus hoschulzii, Micrantholithus obtusus), conuspheres, Speetonia colligata and Cruciellipsis cuvillieri in the Upper Ryazanian and Lower Hauterivian. Reconstructed surface water conditions, indicated by fluctuations in the assemblage compositions, suggest cool conditions for the Late Ryazanian, a cold climate for the Valanginian, and warm climatic conditions for the Hauterivian–Barremian. High meridonial temperature gradients and cool–cold climatic conditions in the high latitudes caused supposedly the formation of deep water in the South Anyui Gulf in the Late Ryazanian–Valanginian. Palaeoceanographic changes, reflected in a counter-balanced ocean current system in the Greenland–Norwegian Seaway, allowed Tethyan biota to spread as far north as North-East Greenland during the Late Ryazanian. Abstract: We present a palaeoclimatic reconstruction of the last glacial cycle in Iberia (ca. 120,000–11,600cal yrs BP) based on multi-proxy reconstructions from lake sediments with robust chronologies, and with a particular focus on abrupt climate changes. The selected lake sequences provide an integrated approach from northern Iberia exploring temperature conditions, humidity variations and land-sea comparisons during the most relevant climate transitions of the last glacial period. Thus, we present evidence that demonstrates: (i) cold but relatively humid conditions during the transition from MIS 5 to MIS 4, which prevailed until ca. 60,000cal yrs BP in northern Iberia; (ii) a general tendency towards greater aridity during MIS 4 and MIS 3 (ca 60,000 to 23,500cal yrs BP) punctuated by abrupt climate changes related to Heinrich Events (HE), (iii) a complex, highly variable climate during MIS 2 (23,500 to 14,600cal yrs BP) with the “Mystery Interval” (MI: 18,500 to 14,600cal yrs BP) and not the global Last Glacial Maximum (LGM: 23,000 to 19,000cal yrs BP) as the coldest and most arid period. The last glacial transition starts in synchrony with Greenland ice records at 14,600cal yrs BP but the temperature increase was not so abrupt in the Iberian records and the highest humidity was attained during the Allerød (GI-1a to GI-1c) and not during the Bølling (GI-1e) period. The Younger Dryas event (GS-1) is discernible in northern Iberian lake records as a cold and dry interval, although Iberian vegetation records present a geographically variable signal for this interval, perhaps related to vegetation resilience. Abstract: West Greenland has been intensively studied to reconstruct and better understand past relative sea level changes and deglacial history. This study extends these efforts by linking sea level and deglacial history to the sedimentary infill successions of Kangerlussuaq Fjord and associated landward valleys. Based on published and new land- and sea-based geophysical data, radiocarbon dates and geological observations we have characterized the infill and reconstructed the sedimentation history during the Holocene. Based on a revised sea level curve and data presented in this paper we defined three depositional phases. Phase I (>7000 yr BP) is represented by dominant glaciomarine deposition associated with a tide-water glacier system. As the Greenland Ice Sheet (GIS) continued to retreat it became land based. During phase II (7000–1500 yr BP) two separate depocenters formed. Keglen delta depocenter arose from a temporary stabilization phase of the GIS and prograded rapidly over the glaciomarine deposits of Phase I. Further inland, proglacial lake formation and subsequent sedimentary infill associated with the ongoing GIS retreat is represents the second depocenter. The Watson River connected both depocenters by a flood plain which transferred sediment from the GIS to the Keglen delta. Ongoing sea level fall due to glacio-isostastic uplift combined with a gradually cooler and dryer climate resulted in terrace formation along the Watson River flood plain. Around 4000 yr BP, the GIS margin reached its most landward location and began to advance to its present location. The final phase (Phase III; <1500 yr BP) is represented by a stabilized GIS position and a relative sea level rise which led to aggrading conditions near the present-day delta plain of Watson River. We constructed an 800,000-year synthetic record of Greenland climate variability based on the thermal bipolar seesaw model. Our Greenland analog reproduces much of the variability seen in the Greenland ice cores over the past 100,000 years. The synthetic record shows strong similarity with the absolutely dated speleothem record from China, allowing us to place ice core records within an absolute timeframe for the past 400,000 years. Hence, it provides both a stratigraphic reference and a conceptual basis for assessing the long-term evolution of millennial-scale variability and its potential role in climate change at longer time scales. Indeed, we provide evidence for a ubiquitous association between bipolar seesaw oscillations and glacial terminations throughout the Middle to Late Pleistocene. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: We use an ice marginal "threshold lake", Lower Nordbosø, in southern Greenland to record episodes when the southern Greenland Ice Sheet (sGIS) was close to the present extent, represented by beds of clastic sediments whereas gyttja-deposition reflects periods when the glacier was behind the threshold, and no glacial meltwater input. The results show that the sedimentation was initiated at c. 10.6 cal ka BP when the ice margin had reached the present extent following the deglaciation. After this the ice margin remained close to the present extent until c. 6.9 cal ka BP when it retreated behind the threshold and first reappeared with a clear glacial signal at c. 3.0–2.8 cal. ka BP and from c. 0.5 cal ka BP until the present. An overall good correlation between clastic input into Lower Nordbosø and IRD events from Narsaq Sound suggests that they represent a general glacial proximity signal of the sGIS. Our data demonstrates that the sGIS behaved less vigorously to Holocene climate changes compared to previous reconstructions. The ice sheet only retreated behind the present ice extent from c. 6.9 to 3.0 cal ka BP and c. 2.8 to 0.5 cal ka BP in the mountainous southern Greenland, whereas the more sensitive low-lying Qassimiut lobe was behind its present margin from c. 9 ka until the Little Ice Age. The timing and nature of ice sheet variations on Greenland over the last ∼5 million years remain largely uncertain. Here, we use a coupled climate-vegetation-ice sheet model to determine the climatic sensitivity of Greenland to combined sets of external forcings and internal feedbacks operating on glacial-interglacial timescales. In particular, we assess the role of atmospheric pCO, orbital forcing, and vegetation dynamics in modifying thresholds for the onset of glaciation in late Pliocene and Pleistocene. The response of circum-Arctic vegetation to declining levels of pCO (from 400 to 200 ppmv) and decreasing summer insolation includes a shift from boreal forest to tundra biomes, with implications for the surface energy balance. The expansion of tundra amplifies summer surface cooling and heat loss from the ground, leading to an expanded summer snow cover over Greenland. Atmospheric and land surface fields respond to forcing most prominently in late spring-summer and are more sensitive at lower Pleistocene-like levels of pCO. We find cold boreal summer orbits produce favorable conditions for ice sheet growth, however simulated ice sheet extents are highly dependent on both background pCO levels and land-surface characteristics. As a result, late Pliocene ice sheet configurations on Greenland differ considerably from late Pleistocene, with smaller ice caps on high elevations of southern and eastern Greenland, even when orbital forcing is favorable for ice sheet growth. Abstract: A new centennial scale benthic foraminiferal record of late Holocene climate variability and oceanographic changes off West Greenland (Disko Bugt) highlights substantial subsurface water mass changes (e.g. temperature and salinity) of the West Greenland Current (WGC) over the past 3.6 ka BP. Benthic foraminifera reveal a long-term late Holocene cooling trend, which may be attributed to increased advection of cold, low-salinity water masses derived from the East Greenland Current (EGC). Cooling becomes most pronounced from c. 1.7 ka BP onwards. At this point the calcareous Atlantic benthic foraminiferal fauna decrease significantly and is replaced by an agglutinated Arctic fauna. Superimposed on this cooling trend, centennial scale variability in the WGC reveals a marked cold phase at c. 2.5 ka BP, which may correspond to the 2.7 ka BP cooling-event recorded in marine and terrestrial archives elsewhere in the North Atlantic region. A warm phase recognized at c. 1.8 ka BP is likely to correspond to the ‘Roman Warm Period’ and represents the warmest bottom water conditions. During the time period of the ‘Medieval Climate Anomaly’ we observe only a slight warming of the WGC. A progressively more dominant cold water contribution from the EGC on the WGC is documented by the prominent rise in abundance of agglutinated Arctic water species from 0.9 ka BP onwards. This cooling event culminates at c. 0.3 ka BP and represents the coldest episode of the ‘Little Ice Age’. Gradually increased influence of cold, low-salinity water masses derived from the EGC may be linked to enhanced advection of Polar and Arctic water by the EGC. These changes are possibly associated with a reported shift in the large-scale North Atlantic Oscillation atmospheric circulation pattern towards a more frequent negative North Atlantic Oscillation mode during the late Holocene. Abstract: The revised study of stratotypes and key sections of the Karginsky regiostage in the West Siberian Plain with the use of 230Th/U dating determinations and advanced 14C dating indicated that many 14C ages obtained in the 1960–1970s were incorrect, and revealed the pre-Karginsky age of the Karginsky regional substage stratotypes adopted in the modern Pleistocene stratigraphic schemes of West Siberia. The available 230Th/U and 14C data along with the new paleobotanical record provided substantial refinement of the Late Pleistocene succession of paleoclimatic events in the West Siberian Plain. The 5e5 and 5e1 optima corresponding to climatic events of the Greenland ice core and 5e2 and 5e4 pessima are revealed in boreal West Siberia. The obtained 230Th/U dating determinations, even with their wide tolerance interval, make it possible to recognize not only the major but certain minor climatic events within the Kazantsevsky interglacial in boreal West Siberia. Beds corresponding to MIS 5c are recorded in the middle reaches of the Ob River. The preceding cooling was comparable with that of the later stages of the Zyryansky glaciation and is correlated with MIS 5d, which suggests the beginning of the Zyryansky glaciation occurred in the second half of MIS 5. The obtained records do not require elimination or reducing of the range of the Karginsky regiostage. Abstract: Although progress has been made in recent years in reconstructing the environmental conditions at the Triassic/Jurassic Boundary (TJB), published records of atmospheric CO2 concentrations have been of low resolution and/or based on multi-taxon estimates. This is addressed here by reconstructing CO2 concentrations across the TJB using stomatal frequencies of four phylogenetically and ecologically distinct plant groups from two depositionally, geographically and taphonomically separate boundary sections in East Greenland and Northern Ireland, with stomatal proxy methods and regression analysis. The resulting CO2 records then are compared with an additional existing TJB record from a geological section in Sweden. The final results indicate that pre-TJB (Rhaetian), the CO2 concentration was approximately 1000ppm, that it started to rise steeply pre-boundary and had doubled to around 2000–2500ppm at the TJB. The CO2 concentration then remained elevated for some time post-boundary, before returning to pre-TJB levels in the Hettangian. These results are in very good accordance with published C-isotope, fire and leaf dissection records, and clearly indicate steeply rising and lingering CO2 concentration at the TJB. To ascertain the response of the southern Greenland Ice Sheet (GIS) to a boreal summer climate warmer than at present, we explored whether southern Greenland was deglaciated during the Last Interglacial (LIG), using the Sr-Nd-Pb isotope ratios of silt-sized sediment discharged from southern Greenland. Our isotope data indicate that no single southern Greenland geologic terrane was completely deglaciated during the LIG, similar to the Holocene. Differences in sediment sources during the LIG relative to the early Holocene denote, however, greater southern GIS retreat during the LIG. These results allow the evaluation of a suite of GIS models and are consistent with a GIS contribution of 1.6 to 2.2 meters to the ≥4-meter LIG sea-level highstand, requiring a significant sea-level contribution from the Antarctic Ice Sheet. West Greenland has had multiple episodes of human colonization and cultural transitions over the past 4,500 y. However, the explanations for these large-scale human migrations are varied, including climatic factors, resistance to adaptation, economic marginalization, mercantile exploration, and hostile neighborhood interactions. Evaluating the potential role of dimate change is complicated by the lack of quantitative paleoclimate reconstructions near settlement areas and by the relative stability of Holocene temperature derived from ice cores atop the Greenland ice sheet. Here we present high-resolution records of temperature over the past 5,600 y based on alkenone unsaturation in sediments of two lakes in West Greenland. We find that major temperature changes in the past 4,500 y occurred abruptly (within decades), and were coeval in timing with the archaeological records of settlement and abandonment of the Saqqaq, Dorset, and Norse cultures, which suggests that abrupt temperature changes profoundly impacted human civilization in the region. Temperature variations in West Greenland display an antiphased relationship to temperature changes in Ireland over centennial to millennial timescales, resembling the interannual to multidecadal temperature seesaw associated with the North Atlantic Oscillation.
