A primary method of mitigating environmental problems in industrial districts, or so-called industrial clusters, in emerging economies is through shared environmental infrastructure. Yet the social justice and equity aspects of these projects claiming to be green and sustainable have rarely been investigated and interrogated, especially in authoritarian systems. Drawing on actor-network theory and environmental politics, this article examines how unjust sustainability may occur in collective environmental solutions such as shared environmental infrastructure in China. Through a case study of a furniture-coating centre to be built in a well known furniture manufacturing cluster in the Shunde District of Guangdong Province, this article investigates how the resulting local controversy unfolded and how the power dynamics between the local state and the protesting communities played out. The result shows that power asymmetry in collective environment actions may result in injustice and inequity concerns that trigger local controversies. Controversies, in turn, offer an opportunity for the power struggle between enrolment and counter-enrolment, which may challenge unequal power relations. The behaviours and tactics deployed by different actor groups in local controversies depend to a certain extent on the constraints and opportunities present within China's multi-scalar environmental governance. Summary: Adolescents' sleep problems and their association with mental health is an important public health concern. This study aimed to investigate sleep and mental health status and the association of sleep with mental health in Chinese high school students. Data came from a cross‐sectional study in Guangdong province which included 42,077 high school students. Sleep quality and sleep duration were obtained through self‐report. The Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS‐21) was used to measure mental health. The association between sleep quality, sleep duration, and mental health was analysed using logistic regression. The prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms were 35.27%, 42.32%, and 21.87% in high school students, respectively. And only 17.71% and 34.41% of the high school students had very good sleep quality and ≥8 h sleep duration, respectively. Poorer sleep quality and shorter sleep duration were risk factors for mental health problems in high school students. Compared to high school students with very good sleep quality and ≥8 h sleep duration, the high school students with poor or very poor sleep quality and <6 h sleep duration had the highest risk of depression symptoms (odds ratio [OR] 5.02, 95% confidence interval [CI] 4.40–5.72), anxiety symptoms (OR 6.02, 95% CI5.25–6.89), and stress symptoms (OR 6.12, 95% CI5.30–7.06). Considering the combined association of sleep quality and sleep duration on mental health, it is important not only to ensure that high school students have sufficient sleep duration, but also to improve their sleep quality. Strain SZW01 was isolated from sea sediment collected from Shenzhen in Guangdong province, China, and was later identified as Aspergillus fumigatus by16S rDNA sequence analysis. Various chromatographic processes led to the isolation and purification of three compounds from the fermentation culture of SZW01, including a new compound, 2,6'-dihydroxy-2,4'dimethoxy-8'-methyl-6-methoxy-acyl-ethyl-diphenylmethanone (1), and two known compounds: fumigaclavine C (2) and alternarosin A (3), as characterised by UV, IR, 1 D, 2 D-NMR and MS data. The antioxidant and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities of these compounds were evaluated. The result illustrated that compound 1 exhibited a moderate antioxidant activity and stronger α-glucosidase inhibitory activity than acarbose. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Citri Sarcodactylis Fructus (CSF) has pharmacological effects such as anti-inflammatory and antihypertensive, and is widely used as medicine and tea. Due to the different physical and chemical properties of CSF from each growing area, we quickly distinguish CSF from different regions by determining the characteristic flavor. This study aimed to investigate the variations in volatile flavors of different CSF originating from Jinhua (JFC), Guangdong (GFC), and Yunnan (YFC). Sensory evaluation, combined with gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), was employed to analyze the volatiles of CSF. GC-IMS showed each sample exhibited its characteristic peak, with YFC demonstrating higher peak areas compared to the others. GC-MS showed that terpenes constituted the highest proportion of volatiles in CSF samples, with limonene and γ -terpinene being the major components in finger citron. Odor activity value (OAV) in combination with principal component analysis (PCA) demonstrated that specific compounds such as dimethyl anthranilate, 1,3,8- p -menthatriene, 2-undecanone, and geranyl propionate contributed significantly to the flavor profile of JFC. Similarly, α -Pinene, β -phellandrene, anethole, and meta -cymene played key roles in the flavor profile of GFC, whereas (Z)- β -ocimene, 1,8-cineole, citronellol, 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one, β -ionone, and p -cymene were identified as characteristic flavor compounds of YFC. Sensory evaluation showed significant flavor distinctions among the three types of CSF, with JFC exhibiting a prominent fruit aroma, GFC showing an evident herbal flavor, and YFC possessing a distinct floral aroma in its overall profile. These findings provided information on the differentiation of CSF originating from various geographical regions at a molecular level. While climate change is widely acknowledged, the role of government support in adaptation is less understood. We narrow this knowledge gap by modelling adaptation as a three‐stage process where a farmer sequentially decides: (i) whether there is a need for adaptation; (ii) whether there are constraints that prevent adaptation; and (iii) whether such constraints are removed through government support. We develop a triple‐hurdle model to describe this decision‐making process and empirically estimate the impact of government support using a rural household survey from Guangdong Province, China. It is found that government support is positively associated with raising the odds of adaptation by about one quarter. This magnitude is larger than the estimates in recent literature, suggesting government support is more effective for farmers bound by constraints. Background: The epidemiology of hepatitis D virus (HDV) in China is fairly unknown. The mechanisms whereby HDV leads to accelerated liver disease in hepatitis B virus (HBV)/HDV co-infected patients and the histological characteristics of chronic hepatitis D (CHD) patients need further investigation. Methods: The prevalence of HDV was retrospectively evaluated in all consecutive hospitalized patients with chronic HBV infection from May 2005 to October 2011. HBV/HDV co-infected patients and HBV mono-infected patients were compared clinically and histologically. Significant histological abnormality was defined as significant necroinflammation (grade ≥A2) and/or significant fibrosis (stage ≥ F2). Results: 6.5% of patients (426/6604) tested positive for IgM anti-HDV. HDV was more common in patients over 50 years old than those under 50 (11.7% vs. 5.1%, P<0.001). HBV/HDV co-infected patients had higher frequencies of end-stage liver disease (ESLD) than HBV mono-infected patients, and HDV co-infection was an independent risk factor for ESLD (OR: 1.428, 95%CI: 1.116–1.827; P = 0.005). The HBV DNA levels in the HBV/HDV group were significantly lower than the HBV group in chronic hepatitis patients (median: 6.50 log10copies/mL vs 6.80 log10copies/mL, P = 0.003), but higher than the HBV group in ESLD patients (median: 5.73 log10copies/mL vs 5.16 log10copies/mL, P<0.001). When stratified by alanine aminotransferase (ALT) level, 46.7%, 56.5% and 80.5% of CHD patients had significant necroinflammation and 86.7%, 87.0% and 90.3% had significant fibrosis with ALT 1–2×upper limit normal (ULN), 2–5×ULN and>5×ULN respectively. Conclusion: The prevalence of HDV is not low in patients with chronic HBV infection. HDV may contribute to progression to ESLD through late-phase HBV DNA reactivation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Climate change is expected to increase occupational heat stress, which will lead to diminished work performance and labor losses worldwide. However, sub-regional analyses remain insufficient, especially for countries with a heterogeneous spatial distribution of working populations, industries and climates. Here, we projected heat-induced labor losses in China, by considering local climate simulations, working population characteristics and developing an exposure–response function suitable for Chinese workers. We showed that the annual heat-induced work hours lost (WHL), compared to the baseline of 21.3 billion hours, will increase by 121.1% (111.2%–131.1%), 10.8% (8.3%–15.3%), and −17.8% (−15.3%–−20.3%) by the end of the century under RCP(Representative Concentration Pathways)8.5, RCP4.5, and RCP2.6, respectively. We observed an approximately linear upward trend of WHL under RCP8.5, despite the decrease in future working population. Notably, WHL will be most prominent in the southern, eastern and central regions, with Guangdong and Henan accounting for a quarter of national total losses; this is largely due to their higher temperature exposure, larger population size, and higher shares of vulnerable population in total employment. In addition, limiting global warming to 1.5 °C would yield substantial gains. Compared to RCP2.6, RCP4.5, and RCP8.5, all provinces can avoid an average of 11.8%, 33.7%, and 53.9% of annual WHL if the 1.5 °C target is achieved, which is equivalent to avoiding 0.1%, 0.6%, and 1.4% of annual GDP losses in China, respectively. This study revealed climate change will exacerbate future labor losses, and adverse impacts can be minimized by adopting stringent mitigation policies coupled with effective adaptation measures.
