The morphology and ontogeny of the trilobite Changaspis elongata based on 216 specimens collected from the Lazizhai section of the Balang Formation (Stage 4, Series 2 of the Cambrian) in Guizhou Province, South China are described. The relatively continuous ontogenetic series reveals morphological changes, and shows that the species has seventeen thoracic segments in the holaspid period, instead of the sixteen as previously suggested. The development of the pygidial segments shows that their number gradually decreases during ontogeny. A new dataset of well-preserved specimens offers a unique opportunity to investigate developmental traits after segment addition is completed. The ontogenetic size progressions for the lengths of cephalon and trunk show overall compliance with Dyar's rule. As a result of different average growth rates for the lengths of cephalon, trunk and pygidium, the length of the thorax relative to the body shows a gradually increasing trend; however, the cephalon and pygidium follow the opposite trend. Morphometric analysis across fourteen post-embryonic stages reveals growth gradients with increasing values for each thoracic segment from anterior to posterior. The reconstruction of the development traits shows visualization of the changes in relative growth and segmentation for the different body parts. The new dataset and growth gradient of the trunk suggest that the thoracic segment growth dynamics of early Cambrian to Silurian trilobites follow the same general continuous, steady-state growth gradient decreasing from posterior to anterior. A new species of Isotrema was recently discovered from Guizhou, China and is here named as I. brevilimbum. It is most similar to I. ovatifolium and I. wardianum, but differs in the morphology of leaves and flowers. A detailed description for the new species, along with line drawings, photographs, as well as morphological comparisons with similar species, are provided. A new species of permineralized ovule is reported from a previously undocumented diverse fossil plant assemblage preserved in volcaniclastic tuff from the Late Permian Xuanwei Formation at the Huopu coal mine in Guizhou Province, China. The ovule is large and platyspermic, with 180° rotational symmetry. It has a pronounced commissure that distally divides the integument into two valves. The integument comprises a two-part sarcotesta, a sclerotesta also divided into two parts, and an endotesta that is unusually thick in the central part of the ovule and at the apex. Fusion of the nucellus to the integument occurs only at the chalaza, and the nucellar apex is small, consisting of a proximal pollen chamber and a distally extending tubular projection. A single vascular bundle enters the base of the ovule and divides in the major plane at the boundary of the inner and outer sarcotesta to form two integumentary bundles, one to each side of the ovule, with the nucellar bundle continuing to the base of the nucellus, where it forms a small vascular cup. The gross morphology and the pattern of vascularization of the ovule fit the circumscription of the morphogenus Cardiocarpus Brongniart, to which the ovule is here assigned, but are distinct from previously recognized morphospecies leading to the erection of Cardiocarpus huopuensis sp. nov. In C. huopuensis sp. nov., tissues of the outer sarcotesta are rarely preserved and where present occur external to a zone of poorly preserved cells that suggests exfoliation of the outer sarcotesta through ontogeny. Although the identity and, hence, affinity of the parent plant for C. huopuensis sp. nov. are unknown, previous evidence shows ovules of this kind to be produced by either a coniferophyte or a seed fern (pteridosperm). Karst caves are widely distributed subsurface systems, and the microbiomes therein are proposed to be the driving force for cave evolution and biogeochemical cycling. In past years, culture-independent studies on the microbiomes of cave systems have been conducted, yet intensive microbial cultivation is still needed to validate the sequence-derived hypothesis and to disclose the microbial functions in cave ecosystems. In this study, the microbiomes of two karst caves in Guizhou Province in southwest China were examined. A total of 3,562 bacterial strains were cultivated from rock, water, and sediment samples, and 329 species (including 14 newly described species) of 102 genera were found. We created a cave bacterial genome collection of 218 bacterial genomes from a karst cave microbiome through the extraction of 204 database-derived genomes and de novo sequencing of 14 new bacterial genomes. The cultivated genome collection obtained in this study and the metagenome data from previous studies were used to investigate the bacterial metabolism and potential involvement in the carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur biogeochemical cycles in the cave ecosystem. New N2-fixing Azospirillum and alkane-oxidizing Oleomonas species were documented in the karst cave microbiome. Two pcaIJ clusters of the b-ketoadipate pathway that were abundant in both the cultivated microbiomes and the metagenomic data were identified, and their representatives from the cultivated bacterial genomes were functionally demonstrated. This large-scale cultivation of a cave microbiome represents the most intensive collection of cave bacterial resources to date and provides valuable information and diverse microbial resources for future cave biogeochemical research. IMPORTANCE Karst caves are oligotrophic environments that are dark and humid and have a relatively stable annual temperature. The diversity of bacteria and their metabolisms are crucial for understanding the biogeochemical cycling in cave ecosystems. We integrated large-scale bacterial cultivation with metagenomic data mining to explore the compositions and metabolisms of the microbiomes in two karst cave systems. Our results reveal the presence of a highly diversified cave bacterial community, and 14 new bacterial species were described and their genomes sequenced. In this study, we obtained the most intensive collection of cultivated microbial resources from karst caves to date and predicted the various important routes for the biogeochemical cycling of elements in cave ecosystems.
