US Gulf of Mexico ports alone accounted for 80 per cent of the total--a massive US$160 billion of investment--much of it aimed at attracting the new cargoes due to come through the Panama Canal. All of this investment has paid off as more and more cargo has been diverted away from the US west coast ports and through the Panama Canal to destinations along the Gulf of Mexico that are closer to shippers' target markets. No longer must a shipment enter the US via Los Angeles or Seattle or any other west coast port. [Extracted from the article]
