Health care at Harlem Hospital in Harlem, New York City is in grave danger of being undermined by impending layoffs and reductions in doctors' hours, says the Doctors Council, which represents the public hospital's 200 physicians. The Council has reached out to a number of unions, community-based organizations and elected officials, including Manhattan Borough president C. Virginia Fields, city councilman Bill Perkins, whose district includes Harlem Hospital, councilwoman Christine Quinn, chairman of the Health Care Committee, and state senator David Paterson, among others. The protest is designed to send a message to both Columbia University, which has ordered layoffs, and the city's Health and Hospitals Corp., which runs the hospital. The unique relationship between Columbia University and Harlem Hospital is based on a multimillion-dollar affiliation agreement through which the university supplies doctors and interns to the Harlem-based health care facility and for which Health and Hospitals Corp. pays Columbia University millions of dollars.
