A recent study conducted by researchers from Anhui Medical University in Hefei, China, has found that the mechanosensitive ion channel PIEZO1 plays a role in mediating inflammation in Crohn's disease. The study found that PIEZO1 was highly expressed in the ileum of patients with Crohn's disease and was associated with intestinal inflammation. The researchers discovered that PIEZO1 triggered calcium influx in intestinal epithelial cells, leading to mitochondrial dysfunction and activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome, which contributes to intestinal inflammation.
