Presents research which shows that the first surge of a volcanic eruption from Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79 instantly killed some people in the town of Herculanuem. Discovery of human skeletons from residents who had taken refuge in boat chambers along the beach; How the victims' postures indicate instantaneous death from thermally induced fulminant shock, rather than suffocation; Description of the skeletons.
