Background: Chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) is the most severe clinical form of peripheral artery disease (PAD), accounting for approximately 11%, and is strongly associated with the incidence of amputation, cardiovascular events, and mortality. The Global Vascular Guideline (GVG) proposed a new Global Anatomic Staging System (GLASS) for evaluating the anatomic complexity of arterial lesions. However, more research is required to evaluate outcomes after endovascular intervention in CLTI patients using the GLASS. Objective: Our study aimed to describe clinical characteristics, arterial lesions, and endovascular interventions according to three grades of GLASS in the Vietnamese population. We evaluated the technical success, mortality rate, and probability to preserve the limb according to the GLASS. Methods: All patients were diagnosed with CLTI and underwent infrainguinal endovascular intervention at the Department of Thoracic and Vascular Surgery, University Medical Center, Ho Chi Minh City from June 2020 to June 2022. All patients were evaluated before intervention and follow-up at 6 and 12 months after intervention. Patients were divided into three groups according to the GLASS, thereby comparing the technical success, mortality, and amputation rates. This retrospective study describes a series of cases. Results: The study sample evaluated 82 lower limbs of 82 patients, in which GLASS class I, II, and III lesions accounted for 36.6%, 43.9%, and 19.5% of the patients, respectively. The rates of technical success in the groups gradually decreased according to the complexity of the lesions (90%, 86.11%, and 56.25% for GLASS I, II, and III, respectively; p = 0.012). Notably, limb-based patency (LBP) at 12 months was significantly lower in the GLASS III group than in the GLASS I and II groups (22.22% vs 88.89% and 67.74%, respectively; p = 0.001). The amputation rates at 12 months in GLASS groups I, II, and III were 13.3%, 22.2%, and 50%, respectively (p = 0.021), while the mortality rates at 12 months were 0%, 8.33%, and 25%, respectively (p = 0.015). Conclusion: In patients with CLTI of higher GLASS stages, the rates of technical success were lower and the amputation and mortality rates were higher. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The widespread presence of microplastics (MPs) in water raises serious concerns on a global scale due to the negative effects on human health and ecosystems. Wastewater and sludge from preliminary plants of recycled plastic pellets are a significant continuous source of MP discharged into the environment. Wastewater and sludge samples were collected from three plastic recycling plants and analyzed for MPs (size from 0.15–5 mm). The average rate of MP emission was approximately 5.8–6.6% of the total investigations. The MP in water ranged from 14.3410 to 19.3395 g/l, of which 40% with size 2–5 mm, 32% (1–2 mm), 5% (0.5–1 mm), 14% (0.15–0.5 mm), and 9% with size less than 0.15 mm in average. MP in sludge varied from 472.2031 to 644.7620 g/kg, of which, 37% with size 2–5 mm, 24% (1–2 mm), 9% (0.5–1 mm), 12% (0.15–0.5 mm) and 18% less than 0.15 mm. In average, 2,695 particles/l and 287,600 particles/kg of MP size 0.15–5 mm was found in wastewater and sludge, which may have a potential risk to aquatic fauna and humans. Therefore, control microplastic emission from those sources will contribute significantly to reducing microplastics entering the surrounding environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The Scholarly Project provides medical students with an opportunity to conduct research on a health and health care topic of interest with faculty mentors. Despite the proven benefits of the Scholarly Project there has only been a gradual change to undergraduate medical education in Vietnam. In the academic year of 2020-2021, the University of Medicine and Pharmacy (UMP) at Ho Chi Minh City launched the Scholarly Project as part of an innovative educational program. This study investigated the impact of the Scholarly Project on the research skills perception of participating undergraduate medical students. Methods: A questionnaire evaluating the perception of fourteen research skills was given to participants in the first week, at midterm, and after finishing the Scholarly Project; students assessed their level on each skill using a 5-point Likert scale from 1 (lowest score) to 5 (highest score). Results: There were statistically significant increases in scores for 11 skills after participation in the Scholarly Project. Of the remaining three skills, ‘Understanding the importance of “controls”’ and ‘Interpreting data’ skills showed a trend towards improvement while the ‘Statistically analyse data’ skill showed a downward trend. Conclusion: The Scholarly Project had a positive impact on each student’s perception of most research skills and should be integrated into the revamped undergraduate medical education program at UMP, with detailed instruction on targeted skills for choosing the optimal study design and follow-up assessment. Objectives: The official implementation of clinical pharmacy in Vietnam has arrived relatively late, resulting in various stressors. This study aims to evaluate job stress level and suggest viable solutions. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on clinical pharmacists (CPs) in 128 hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC). Job stress questions were derived from the Healthcare Profession Stress Inventory (HPSI). Results: A total of 197 CPs participated, giving a response rate of 82.4%. Participants were found to have moderate job stress with an overall mean stress score of 1.5 (0.4) and stress rate of 52.8%. The sample size was statistically adequate and the HPSI was valid and reliable. Patient care responsibility was the main stressor, especially in public hospitals, followed by job conflicts. Lack of experience, low income, and inability to participate in clinical ward rounds caused significant stress to CPs regarding job recognition and job uncertainty. More practice-oriented training programs in bachelor curricula and clinical practice should be applied to help CPs gain more experience, self-confidence, and diminish job stress. Conclusion: CPs in HCMC have moderate stress. More practice-oriented training programs should be prioritized to lessen stress for CPs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) in Vietnam pioneered the practice of clinical pharmacy; however, hospitals in HCMC have faced numerous challenges that might influence the job satisfaction of clinical pharmacists (CPs). Additionally, there have been no official statistics about clinical pharmacy activities that have been reported so far. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine the current status of the clinical pharmacy profession and to analyze the key factors affecting job satisfaction of CPs in HCMC. This was a cross-sectional study. Self-administered questionnaires were distributed to all the CPs in all the 128 hospitals in HCMC via an online survey tool from May to June 2020. Only about 30% of the respondents were full-time CPs. The percentage of CPs participating in clinical wards was relatively low (52.79%). "Provide drug information for patients and medical employees" was the most common clinical pharmacy activity, with the percentage of CPs participating in it being nearly 90%. Overall, 74.1% of the 197 CPs surveyed were satisfied with their current job. The factors that they were satisfied with the most and the least were "Inter & Intra professional relationships" (95.9%) and "Income" (59.9%), respectively. The only demographic and work-related characteristic that had a statistically significant association with overall job satisfaction was "Ward round participation". Most clinical pharmacy tasks noted a high rate of participation from the CPs. Nevertheless, hospitals in HCMC was found to be experiencing a shortage of CPs and low levels of participation of CPs in ward rounds, and most CPs were unable to completely focus on clinical pharmacy tasks. Regarding CPs' job satisfaction-related aspects, income and ward round participation appear to be the two factors that should be increased, in order to enhance CPs' job satisfaction. Background HIV prevalence among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW) in Vietnam is high, whereas coverage of effective HIV prevention services has been inadequate. Studies have measured MSM and TGW demand for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) services, which led to the design of the first ever PrEP program in Vietnam, Prepped for PrEP (P4P).Methods: In March 2017, PrEP services were offered in Ho Chi Minh City as part of the P4P demonstration project, enabling same-day enrolment in three key population (KP)-led clinics and four public clinics. P4P aimed to assess acceptability and feasibility of PrEP services through calculating the rate of PrEP enrolment over time, and quarterly measures of continuation and adherence over an 18-month period.Results: A total of 1069 MSM and 62 TGW were enrolled in P4P. Average monthly PrEP enrolment among MSM increased five-fold from the first 3 months (March-June 2017) to the last 3 months of active enrolment (March-June 2018), whereas for TGW, no increased trend in PrEP enrolment per quarter was seen. Self-reported PrEP adherence was >90% at all time points among MSM, but varied from 11.1% to 88.9% among TGW. PrEP continuation was calculated at months 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 and 18. For MSM, it was 88.7% at month 3, 68.8% at month 12 and 46.6% at month 18, whereas for TGW, it was 87.1%, 54.8% and 52.8%, respectively. Multivariable regression identified that MSM with lower-than-average income (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 2.38 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.59-3.54), P = 0.000), aged >30 years (aOR 2.03 (95% CI: 1.30-3.40), P = 0.007) and with an increasing number of sex partners (aOR: 1.06 (1.01-1.11), P = 0.011) had greater odds of remaining on PrEP. For TGW, being aged >30 years was associated with continuing on PrEP (aOR 5.62 (95% CI: 1.05-29.9), P = 0.043).Conclusions: We found PrEP to be highly acceptable among MSM and moderately acceptable among TGW. Continuation rates were relatively high for the first roll-out of PrEP; however, those aged ≤30 years were much more likely to discontinue services. Scaling-up PrEP through differentiated and community-led and engaged PrEP service delivery will be key to effectively increase access and uptake over the next 5 years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: When Viet Nam launched the Expanded Programme on Immunization in 1981, it covered six vaccines, including measles. Subsequently, Viet Nam experienced a marked reduction in measles infections. A nationwide measles epidemic occurred in April 2014 and an investigation found that 86% of affected children aged 9 months to 10 years were not fully vaccinated; therefore, understanding the reasons for not vaccinating could improve vaccination coverage. Method: We performed a cross-sectional study to determine vaccination coverage and reasons for non-vaccination among children aged 9 months to 10 years in six districts in Ho Chi Minh City with the highest number of measles cases in 2014. Measles vaccination status of the youngest child in each household was determined and reasons for non-vaccination were investigated. A -2 test and multiple logistic regression were used to identify independent predictors of full vaccination. Results: In total, 207 children were enrolled during the study period in 2014. Full measles vaccination coverage was 55% in these households, and 73% of parents were aware of the importance of measles vaccination to protect their children. We found that the father's education level (under high school versus high school and above) and the site where the survey was conducted were significantly associated with vaccination status. Conclusion: The vaccination coverage was lower than the coverage reported by district preventive medicine centres of the seven study wards. Lack of the second vaccination was a key obstacle to eliminating the vaccination gap. A catch-up mass vaccination campaign or health promotion of measles vaccination directed towards parents should be considered to improve vaccination coverage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To determine the effectivity of bacteriophages in controlling the mass mortality of striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) due to infections caused by Aeromonas spp. in Vietnamese fish farms, bacteriophages against pathogenic Aeromonas hydrophila were isolated. A. hydrophila-phage 2 and A. hydrophila-phage 5 were successfully isolated from water samples from the Saigon River of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. These phages, belonging to the Myoviridae family, were found to have broad activity spectra, even against the tested multiple-antibiotic-resistant Aeromonas isolates. The latent periods and burst size of phage 2 were 10 min and 213 PFU per infected host cell, respectively. The bacteriophages proved to be effective in inhibiting the growth of the Aeromonas spp. under laboratory conditions. Phage treatments applied to the pathogenic strains during infestation of catfish resulted in a significant improvement in the survival rates of the tested fishes, with up to 100% survival with MOI 100, compared to 18.3% survival observed in control experiments. These findings illustrate the potential for using phages as an effective bio-treatment method to control Motile Aeromonas Septicemia (MAS) in fish farms. The article describes the case of a 25-year-old nurse in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam who developed hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), which is said to imply the presence of a Seoul virus (SEOV) strain. The patient had a 3-day history of high fever, chills, myalgia, nausea vomiting, hematuria and abdominal and lower back pain. The researchers' epidemiologic findings indicate that the source of the hantavirus infection was the patient's home, the only place where she had a history of exposure to rodents.
