The role of emotions in student engagement has been examined in many studies. However, little is known about how emotional intelligence (EI) is related to engagement and other key learning outcomes in higher education. To fill this gap, this study examined how EI is associated with student engagement and how EI and engagement jointly predict key learning outcomes in higher education, including the students' GPA, generic outcomes, and satisfaction with the university experience. The study adopted a prospective longitudinal design involving 560 first-year students from 10 faculties of a university in Hong Kong. The data were collected at two-time points, namely before the start and after the end of the students' first year in the university. Structural equation modeling was employed to test the measurement and hypothesized models. Results indicated that EI positively predicted all dimensions of student engagement and promoted key learning outcomes (including GPA, generic learning outcomes, and students' satisfaction with the university) via the different dimensions of student engagement. The model also explained 16%, 44%, and 38% of the students' GPA, generic learning outcomes, and satisfaction with their university experience, respectively. This study provides empirical evidence on the positive effect of EI on the students' optimal functioning in the higher education context. Implications of the findings are discussed.

Introduction: Cervical cancer is the fourth most common female cancer worldwide. The prognosis for women with advanced-stage or recurrent cervical cancer remains poor and response to treatment is variable. Standardized management protocols leave little room for individualization. We report on a novel blood-based liquid biopsy for specific PIK3CA mutations as a clinically useful biomarker in patients with invasive cervical cancer., Methods: One hundred seventeen Hong Kong Chinese women with primary invasive cervical cancer and their pre-treatment plasma samples were investigated. Two PIK3CA mutations, p.E542K and p.E545K were measured in cell free DNA (cfDNA) extracted from plasma using droplet digital PCR. This liquid biopsy of PIK3CA in cervical cancer was correlated to clinico-pathological features to verify the potential of PIK3CA as a clinically useful molecular biomarker for predicting disease prognosis and monitoring for progression., Results: PIK3CA mutations, either p.E542K or p.E545K, were detected in plasma cfDNA from 22.2% of the patients. PIK3CA mutation status was significantly correlated to median tumor size (p<0.01). PIK3CA mutations detected in the plasma were significantly associated with decreased disease-free survival and overall survival (p<0.05)., Conclusions: As a liquid molecular biopsy, analysis of circulating PIK3CA mutations shows promise as a way to refine risk stratification of individual patients with cervical cancer, and provides a platform for further research to offer individualized therapy with the purpose of improving outcomes., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Inc. Although the rates of cervical squamous cell carcinoma have been declining, the rates of cervical adenocarcinoma are increasing in some countries. Outcomes for advanced cervical adenocarcinoma remain poor. Precision mapping of genetic alterations in cervical adenocarcinoma may enable better selection of therapies and deliver improved outcomes when combined with new sequencing diagnostics. We present whole-exome sequencing results from 15 cervical adenocarcinomas and paired normal samples from Hong Kong Chinese women. These data revealed a heterogeneous mutation spectrum and identified several frequently altered genes including FAT1, ARID1A, ERBB2 and PIK3CA. Exome sequencing identified human papillomavirus (HPV) sequences in 13 tumors in which the HPV genome might have integrated into and hence disrupted the functions of certain exons, raising the possibility that HPV integration can alter pathways other than p53 and pRb. We have investigated the role of cytokine lymphotoxin in tumour-stromal interactions in human ovarian cancer. We found that lymphotoxin overexpression is commonly shared by the cancer cells of various ovarian cancer subtypes, and lymphotoxin-beta receptor (LTBR) is expressed ubiquitously in both the cancer cells and cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs). In monoculture, we showed that ovarian cancer cells are not the major lymphotoxin-responsive cells. On the other hand, our co-culture studies demonstrated that the cancer cell-derived lymphotoxin induces chemokine expression in stromal fibroblasts through LTBR-NF-κB signalling. Amongst the chemokines being produced, we found that fibroblast-secreted CXCL11 promotes proliferation and migration of ovarian cancer cells via the chemokine receptor CXCR3. CXCL11 is highly expressed in CAFs in ovarian cancer biopsies, while CXCR3 is found in malignant cells in primary ovarian tumours. Additionally, the overexpression of CXCR3 is significantly associated with the tumour grade and lymph node metastasis of ovarian cancer, further supporting the role of CXCR3, which interacts with CXCL11, in promoting growth and metastasis of human ovarian cancer. Taken together, these results demonstrated that cancer-cell-derived lymphotoxin mediates reciprocal tumour-stromal interactions in human ovarian cancer by inducing CXCL11 in fibroblasts. Objective: To assess perioperative and short-term outcomes after tension-free vaginal mesh repair of pelvic organ prolapse in local Chinese women., Design: Case series., Setting: The urogynaecology unit of a university teaching hospital in Hong Kong., Patients: All women with stage III or more pelvic organ prolapse who underwent tension-free vaginal mesh repair with or without vaginal hysterectomy from May 2007 to June 2011., Main Outcome Measures: Perioperative and short-term outcomes., Results: In all, 47 women underwent the procedure during the study period. The mean operating time was 94 minutes, the mean estimated blood loss was 163 mL, and the mean hospital stay was 4 days. Four patients had visceral injuries, all of which were identified and repaired during the operation; all four patients recovered uneventfully. The mean duration of follow-up was 25 (standard deviation, 13) months. Pelvic organ prolapse quantification improved significantly; nine (19%) of the patients had recurrent stage II prolapse but only one was symptomatic, six (13%) had postoperative mesh exposure, three of whom underwent mesh excision. There were five (11%) who had de-novo urodynamic stress incontinence, which was mostly mild and managed conservatively. Overall 91% (43/47) were satisfied with their operative outcome., Conclusions: The success rate of tension-free vaginal mesh repair for the treatment of pelvic organ prolapse in local Chinese women was comparable to rates reported internationally. There was a high degree of subjective satisfaction with the procedure. There were low rates of mesh exposure and de-novo stress incontinence that was mostly asymptomatic or mild.

Introduction and Hypothesis: This study evaluated the responsiveness and minimal important differences (MID) of the Chinese Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory (PFDI) and Pelvic Floor Impact Questionnaire (PFIQ) in women undergoing urodynamic stress incontinence (USI) and/or pelvic organ prolapse (POP) treatment., Methods: One hundred and fifty-six women were assessed using the PFDI and PFIQ before and after they received continence surgery and or pelvic floor repair (PFR) surgery, or vaginal pessary. Symptom severity was recorded using a visual analog scale (VAS) before and after treatment as was rating of their satisfaction with the treatment they received. Responsiveness of the PFDI and PFIQ were evaluated by effect sizes, standardized response mean, paired samples t test or Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. MID in the PFDI and PFIQ for different treatments were determined by satisfaction rating, change in VAS scoring, and distribution-based methods., Results: There were significant improvements in the respective subscales of PFDI and PFIQ, demonstrating moderate to great responsiveness after different treatments. The estimation of MID for the Urinary Distress Inventory (UDI) was -30 to -14 and the Urinary Impact Questionnaire (UIQ) was -28 to -14 for women who underwent continence surgery. The MID for the Pelvic Organ Prolapse Distress Inventory (POPDI) was -44 to -21, the Pelvic Organ Prolapse Impact Questionnaire (POPIQ) -40 to -27, the UDI -22 to -16, the UIQ -37 to -31, the Colo-Rectal-Anal Distress Inventory (CRADI) -37 to -14, and the Colo-Rectal-Anal Impact Questionnaire (CRAIQ) -34 to -6 for women who underwent PFR surgery; and estimation of MID for the POPDI was -16, the POPIQ -29, the UDI -28, the UIQ -17, the CRADI -25, and the CRAIQ -31 for women who received a vaginal pessary. The MID of the respective subscales were supported by the distribution-based methods., Conclusions: The Chinese PFDI and PFIQ instruments are responsive to change in women undergoing continence surgery, PFR surgery or vaginal pessary for USI or POP.

Grief following miscarriage is a complex psychological response. This study was conducted to examine the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Perinatal Grief Scale (PGS). A total of 280 Chinese women completed the PGS immediately following a diagnosis of miscarriage (baseline) and were reassessed at 12 months follow-up. The factor structure of the Chinese PGS was explored. The convergent validity of the PGS was established by examining its correlations with the General Health Questionnaire-12 and Beck Depression Inventory at baseline. The reliability of the Chinese PGS was satisfactory. A two-factor structure accounting for 45% of the variance was identified. The Chinese PGS was positively correlated with General Health Questionnaire-12 and Beck Depression Inventory scores. The Chinese PGS was found to be a reliable and valid tool to measure grief following miscarriage.

Objectives: To evaluate the quality of life in women with urinary incontinence (categorised by urodynamic findings)., Design: Prospective cohort study on patients., Setting: Urogynaecology unit of a university teaching hospital in Hong Kong. PATIENTS. Female patients presenting to our clinic from July 2008 to December 2009 and having their urinary incontinence categorised by urodynamic study., Main Outcome Measures: Patient's quality of life was assessed using the Medical Outcomes Study Short Form, Urogenital Distress Inventory Short Form, and Incontinence Impact Questionnaire Short Form. Their quality of life was compared according to their urodynamic category and a subgroup analysis was performed on patients having continence surgery for urodynamic stress incontinence., Results: Among the 223 women studied, 46% had urodynamic stress incontinence, 18% had detrusor overactivity, 2% had both urodynamic stress incontinence and detrusor overactivity, and 34% had no urodynamic abnormality. In all, the Medical Outcomes Study Short Form scoring was lower than normal local population. The Medical Outcomes Study Short Form score in detrusor overactivity group was significantly lower than urodynamic stress incontinence group in vitality and mental health domains. Detrusor overactivity group also had higher scores in Incontinence Impact Questionnaire Short Form in travel, social and emotional health subscales and total score (46.3 vs 29.1; P<0.01). Women with urodynamic stress incontinence and required continence surgery had higher scores in Incontinence Impact Questionnaire Short Form., Conclusion: Women with urinary incontinence had impaired quality of life and it was comparable to other chronic medical diseases. Women with detrusor overactivity have more impaired quality of life than women with urodynamic stress incontinence. Severity of urodynamic stress incontinence did not correlate with quality of life. Women who opted for continence surgery had poorer quality of life.

Background: The rates of preterm birth in Chinese women and the potential effects of differing environments are poorly understood., Aim: To determine the rate of preterm birth in Chinese women in China, Hong Kong and Western Australia., Methods: The rates of preterm birth were obtained from records of 26,611 pregnancies in Jiangsu Province in mainland China, 48,976 pregnancies in Hong Kong and 185,798 pregnancies in Western Australia., Results: Preterm birth rates increased from 2.6 and 2.9% in urban and rural Jiangsu Province, respectively, and 2.5% in China-born women in Western Australia who required an interpreter; to 4.9% in China-born women in Western Australia who did not require an interpreter; to 5.6% in non-resident Chinese women in Hong Kong; and 7.6% for women resident in Hong Kong. Within Western Australia, the rate of preterm birth was significantly less in women who were born in China and declared themselves to be Chinese (4.4%) than Caucasians (7.8%), other women who declared themselves to be 'Asian' (8.7%) and women of Aboriginal heritage (14.5%)., Conclusions: The rate of preterm birth in China is relatively low but appears to differ in Chinese women in other environments. Differences between traditional Chinese and contemporary Western lifestyles, possibly including smoking and sexual practices, may contribute to the different rates of preterm birth. Further research in this area may provide avenues for the prevention of preterm birth and also help to prevent a possible rise in this complication of pregnancy as Chinese society continues on the path of economic and social reform., (© 2011 The Authors. Purpose: The aim of the study was to examine the role of neuroticism and mastery in predicting the quality of life (QOL) among Chinese gynecologic cancer survivors., Methods: A total of 184 women participated in this prospective longitudinal study. Participants were to rate their quality of life at baseline (T1) and one year later (T2). Neuroticism as a predictor of QOL was examined by controlling for baseline QOL, sociodemographic, and disease variables using hierarchical linear regression modeling. Mastery as a mediator between the relationship of neuroticism and QOL was also examined., Results: Bivariate correlations showed that the cancer site, time since diagnosis, neuroticism, and mastery at T1 were related to various aspects of QOL at T1 and T2. After controlling for cancer site, time since diagnosis, QOL at T1, high levels of neuroticism at T1 predicted poor physical and emotional QOL at T2, but mastery at T1 did not mediate the relationship between neuroticism at T1 and QOL at T2., Conclusions: Neuroticism is a salient personality variable that predicts poor emotional and physical well-being over time. Gynecologic cancer survivors high on neuroticism should be the target for intervention to reduce negative effects during the course of recovery.

Objective: to identify the antenatal taboos commonly practised by pregnant Hong Kong Chinese women; to explore the health beliefs behind these taboos; and to examine how pregnant women perceived and reacted to the cultural tradition., Design: general ethnography and in-depth interviews, followed by a quantitative self-reported survey., Setting: Antenatal clinic of a university-affiliated hospital in Hong Kong., Participants: consecutive samples of 60 women for in-depth interviews, and 832 women for the survey., Measurements: an inventory on the adherence and attitude towards antenatal taboos, and the Beck Depression Inventory that measures severity of depression., Findings: antenatal taboos were still commonly observed by contemporary Chinese women. Miscarriage, fetus malformation and fetal ill-health were the key cultural fears that drove contemporary Chinese women to observe the traditional taboos. About one-quarter and one-tenth of the women, respectively, felt unhappy and disputed with their families about the taboos. These women had significantly higher levels of depression in late pregnancy and during childbirth., Implications for Practice: health-care practitioners should be aware of the benefits and risks of traditional antenatal taboos on maternal health. Although some taboos can be socio-morally protective, the tension created by the observation of cultural tradition in modernity may impair maternal psychological well-being. Health-care providers in Western countries should be vigilant of the complex cultural tension faced by migrant Chinese mothers.

The objective of this study, a parallel study to global gene expression profiling, was to identify dysregulated microRNAs (miRNAs) associated with endometrioid endometrial adenocarcinoma (EEC), examine their correlation with clinico-pathological characteristics and identify predicted target genes of the dysregulated miRNAs. Using real-time quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), profiling of miRNA expression was performed in 30 EECs and 22 normal counterparts in which genome-wide gene expression had been previously profiled and reported. Clustering analysis identified 30 miRNAs which were significantly dysregulated in EEC. The expression of a sub-group of miRNAs was significantly correlated with clinico-pathological characteristics including stage, myometrial invasion, recurrence and lymph node involvement. By searching for predicted miRNA targets that were linked to the dysregulated genes previously identified, 68 genes were predicted as candidate targets of these 30 dysregulated miRNAs. miR-205 was significantly overexpressed in EECs compared with normal controls. After transfection of a miR-205 inhibitor, the expression of miR-205 in endometrial cancer cell line RL95-2 cells decreased whereas its predicted target gene, JPH4, showed increased protein expression. JPH4 seems to be a real miR-205 target in vitro and in vivo, and a candidate tumor suppressor gene in EEC. Based on this study in EEC, miRNAs predicted to be involved in tumorigenesis and tumor progression have been identified and placed in the context of the transcriptome of EEC. This work provides a framework on which further research into novel diagnosis and treatment of EEC can be focused.

Objective: To ascertain the prevalence of menstrual problems in adolescent girls and their health-seeking behaviour., Design: Questionnaire survey on menstruation, menstrual problems, medical consultation, and factors influencing girls seeking medical care., Setting: Secondary schools in the catchment area of a tertiary teaching hospital in Hong Kong., Participants: A total of 5609 girls from 10 secondary schools., Main Outcome Measures: Prevalence of menstrual problems and health-seeking behaviour of adolescent girls., Results: The mean age of the girls and their mean age at menarche were 15.1 (standard deviation, 2.0) years and 12.3 (1.1) years, respectively. The prevalence of menorrhagia, dysmenorrhoea, and menstrual symptoms were 17.9% (95% confidence interval, 16.9-19.1%), 68.7% (67.7-70.3%), and 37.7% (36.7-39.3%), respectively. The prevalence of menstrual symptoms (P<0.001) and dysmenorrhoea (P<0.001) increased with gynaecological age (calendar age minus age at menarche), whilst the proportion having short or long cycles decreased (P=0.002 and P=0.009). One in eight girls reported having been absent from school, whilst only 6.4% had sought medical care because of menses. Multivariate analysis indicated that seeking medical care for menorrhagia was dependent on the opinion of a family member (P=0.005), and for dysmenorrhoea on its severity (P=0.046) and anxiety about embarrassing questions (P=0.039)., Conclusions: The prevalence of menstrual problems in Hong Kong Chinese girls is high and causes significant disruption to their school and daily activities. However, only a minority seek medical advice.

Background: A woman's childbirth experience has an influence on her future preferred mode of delivery. This study aimed to identify determinants for women who changed from preferring a planned vaginal birth to an elective cesarean section after their first childbirth., Methods: This prospective longitudinal observational study involved two units that provide obstetric care in Hong Kong. A mail survey was sent to 259 women 6 months after their first childbirth. These women had participated in a longitudinal cohort study that examined their preference for elective cesarean section in the antenatal period of their first pregnancies. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify determinants for women who changed from preferring vaginal birth to elective cesarean section., Results: Twenty-four percent (23.8%, 95% CI 18.4-29.3) of women changed from preferring vaginal birth to elective cesarean section after their first childbirth. Determinants found to be positively associated with this change included actual delivery by elective cesarean section (OR 106.3, 95% CI 14.7-767.4) intrauterine growth restriction (OR 19.5, 95% CI 1.1-353.6), actual delivery by emergency cesarean section (OR 8.4, 95% CI 3.4-20.6), higher family income (OR 3.2, 95% CI 1.1-8.8), use of epidural analgesia (OR 2.6, 95% CI 1.0-6.8), and higher trait anxiety score (OR 1.1, 95% CI 1.0-1.3). The most important reason for women who changed from preferring vaginal birth to elective cesarean section was fear of vaginal birth (24.4%)., Conclusions: A significant proportion of women changed their preferred mode of delivery after their first childbirth. Apart from reducing the number of cesarean sections in nulliparous women, prompt provision of education to women who had complications and investigations into fear factors during vaginal birth might help in reducing women's wish to change to elective cesarean section.

This study assessed the impact of an information pamphlet on acceptance of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in Chinese women. The pamphlet increased the self-perceived knowledge on cervical cancer and HPV of the study subjects and had a positive influence on women accepting HPV vaccination for their daughters (p < .001).

Objective: To find the clinical and socio-demographic determinants for Hong Kong Chinese women who preferred elective caesarean section., Design: Cross-sectional interview survey., Setting: University teaching hospital, Hong Kong., Participants: A cohort of consecutive Hong Kong Chinese pregnant women (n=660) attending a government-funded obstetric unit catering deliveries in the New Territories in Hong Kong in 2002., Main Outcome Measures: The clinical and socio-demographic determinants of preference for elective caesarean section, in women who could have a trial of vaginal delivery., Results: The overall prevalence for maternal preference for elective caesarean section was 16.7% (95% confidence interval, 13.8-19.6). The factors associated with preferring elective caesarean section were: previous elective caesarean section (odds ratio=7.6; 95% confidence interval, 2.0-28.7) and previous emergency caesarean section (3.8; 1.8-8.2). Among nulliparous women, the prevalence of preference for elective caesarean section was 16.8% (95% confidence interval, 13.0-20.6). Conception by in-vitro fertilisation was found to be significantly associated with preferring elective caesarean section in nulliparous women (odds ratio=5.2; 95% confidence interval, 1.0-26.4)., Conclusion: Previous caesarean section and conception by in-vitro fertilisation were determinants for women preferring elective caesarean section.

Objective: The aim of the present study was to examine the behavioral and psychological responses of pregnant women during the 2003 severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak in Hong Kong., Methods: Ethnographic interviews were first conducted to identify the common psychological and behavioral responses to the outbreak. This was followed by a case-control study of 235 consecutive pregnant women recruited during the SARS epidemic, and a historical cohort of 939 pregnant women recruited a year before the outbreak. Both cohorts completed standardized rating scales on depression, anxiety, and social support., Results: Women in the SARS cohort adopted behavioral strategies to mitigate their risk of contracting infection. However, pregnant women tended to overestimate the risk of contracting SARS and nearly a third of the women were homebound. The anxiety level of the SARS cohort was slightly higher than that of the pre-SARS control. No statistical difference was found between the depression levels of the two cohorts., Conclusion: The improved social support experienced by pregnant women during SARS might have buffered the stress associated with an outbreak. However, clinicians should monitor for overestimation of infectious risk among pregnant women.

An analysis of gene expression profiles obtained from cervical cancers was performed to find those genes most aberrantly expressed. Total RNA was prepared from 29 samples of cervical squamous cell carcinoma and 18 control samples, and hybridized to Affymetrix oligonucleotide microarrays with probe sets complementary to over 20,000 transcripts. Unsupervised hierarchical clustering of the expression data readily distinguished normal cervix from cancer. Supervised analysis of gene expression data identified 98 and 139 genes that exhibited >2-fold upregulation and >2-fold downregulation, respectively, in cervical cancer compared to normal cervix. Several of the genes that were differentially regulated included SPP1 (Osteopontin), CDKN2A (p16), RPL39L, Clorf1, MAL, p11, ARS and NICE-1. These were validated by quantitative RT-PCR on an independent set of cancer and control specimens. Gene Ontology analysis showed that the list of differentially expressed genes included ones that were involved in multiple biological processes, including cell proliferation, cell cycle and protein catabolism. Immunohistochemical staining of cancer specimens further confirmed differential expression of SPP1 in cervical cancer cells vs. nontumor cells. In addition, 2 genes, CTGF and RGS1 were found to be upregulated in late stage cancer compared to early stage cancer, suggesting that they might be involved in cancer progression. The pathway analysis of expression data showed that the SPP1, VEGF, CDC2 and CKS2 genes were coordinately differentially regulated between cancer and normal. The present study is promising and provides potential new insights into the extent of expression differences underlying the development and progression of cervical squamous cell cancer. Objective: To evaluate the pregnancy outcomes of two policies of timing of induction of labor for post-term pregnancies., Study Design: It is a retrospective study in a University obstetric unit from 1997 to 2002. Five thousand eight hundred and ninety-two singleton, cephalic pregnancies with gestational age at delivery at or more than 41 completed weeks were studied. They were divided into two groups. Group A included women who delivered from January 1997 to February 1999 when the policy of the department was to induce labor for post-maturity at 42 weeks of gestation. Group B included those delivered between March 1999 and December 2002 when the timing of induction for post-term was advanced to 41 weeks. The intrapartum characteristics, delivery and perinatal outcomes were analyzed by Student's t-test and Chi-square test for continuous and categorical variables, respectively., Results: Two thousand one hundred and seventy-six women were studied in Group A and 3716 in Group B. Twenty-nine percent of these pregnancies in Group A required induction of labor whereas 20.3% were for post-term. In Group B, 58% of pregnancies had labor induction and 55% for post-maturity. For the pregnancies undergoing induction of labor for post-term, both the duration of labor (P<0.001) and the need of intrapartum epidural analgesia were increased (OR 1.3, 95% CI: 1.0-1.6) in Group B. However, there was no significant difference in the mode of delivery, apgar scores and stillbirths between the two study periods., Conclusion: Compared to routine induction at 42 weeks, induction at 41 weeks is associated with a significantly higher risk of use of medical interventions and associated complications, with no observable benefits.

The combined oral contraceptive (COC) pills, injectables, intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) and female sterilization are the most common contraceptive methods used by women. Women's choice, compliance and satisfaction with specific contraceptive methods are influenced by any impact of the method on their quality of life and sexual function. Anxiety regarding possible adverse effects of the contraceptive methods on their quality of life and sexual function is one of the common concerns. The aim of this prospective observational study was to determine the impact of the abovementioned contraceptive methods on the quality of life and sexual function of the users. A sample of 361 Hong Kong Chinese women who were first-time users of the following contraceptive methods completed the study: COC pills (n=87), injectables (n=67), IUCD (n=96) and female sterilization (n=111). Quality of life and sexual function of the subjects were assessed before and 3-4 months after use of the method by a standardized questionnaire. The questions were adopted from the validated Chinese versions of the World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL) questionnaire and the Derogatis Sexual Functioning Inventory (DSFI). In the female sterilization group, we found a significantly higher score for sexual satisfaction (p=.004) and sexual drive (p=.003) 3-4 months after sterilization, as well as an improved WHOQOL social domain score (p=.009). However, the other DSFI subscale scores and WHOQOL domain scores were not significantly different (p>.05). No significant difference was demonstrated in all the WHOQOL domain scores and DSFI subscale scores after use of COC pills, injectables and IUCD (p>.05). We conclude that the COC pills, injectables, IUCD and female sterilization all do not have significant adverse impact on quality of life and sexual function. After female sterilization, there is a significant improvement in sexual satisfaction and sexual drive.

Background: Although there have been many studies of the biological and psychosocial causations of postnatal depression, studies of sociocultural risk factors are rare., Aims: To investigate the sociocultural risk factors of postnatal depression using ethnographically informed epidemiological methods., Method: A total of 959 women were assessed at their first ante-partum visit (baseline), in the third trimester, immediately after delivery, and 3 months postpartum. Six domains of risk factors were examined. The dependent variable was postnatal depression (as defined by the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale) at 3 months post-partum., Results: Conflict with mother-in-law, marital dissatisfaction, past depression and antenatal depression independently predicted the occurrence of postnatal depression. The cultural practice of peiyue - a Chinese post-partum custom of mandated family support - was associated with better social support and a slightly lower risk of postnatal depression., Conclusions: Sociocultural aspects of the immediate puerperium shape maternal emotional well-being. In-law conflict is an important source of household distress in many Asian societies. The findings have implications for clinical practice and future studies.

Objectives: To evaluate the use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT), the prevalence of climacteric symptoms, and the knowledge about HRT., Methods: A prospective study was conducted by telephone interview among a randomly selected population-based sample of 978 Hong Kong Chinese women aged 40-60 years., Results: Of 414 women with a history of either natural or surgical menopause, 22 (5.3%) and 17 (4.1%), respectively, were either past or current users of HRT. The climacteric symptom scores of premenopausal women were significantly lower than those of perimenopausal women, but were comparable with those of postmenopausal women. The commonest climacteric symptom was 'muscle and joint pains' which was reported in 553 (56.6%) women, while only 228 (23.3%) and 151 (15.4%) women reported hot flushes and night sweating, respectively. Moreover, only 230 (23.5%) women realized that HRT could relieve menopausal symptoms and only 33 (3.4%) women were aware that HRT was protective against osteoporosis. In general, women with more climacteric symptoms, who had ever used HRT, and those with higher education level and higher family income, had better knowledge about HRT., Conclusions: Postmenopausal Hong Kong Chinese women have a low HRT usage rate and the majority of them are lacking of the knowledge about HRT.

Aim of the Study: To examine the lived experiences of a group of Hong Kong Chinese women diagnosed with postnatal depression., Background: Postnatal depression affects approximately 1 in 10 childbearing women in Hong Kong. However, most studies of postnatal depression have been carried out in Western societies and no qualitative research was found describing the experience of Hong Kong Chinese mothers with postnatal depression., Design: A phenomenological study was conducted. Data were collected by semi-structured interviews. A purposive sample of 35 women diagnosed with postnatal depression was interviewed. Interview data were analysed following Colaizzi's phenomenological methodology., Results: Themes that emerged describing participants' experiences included trapped in the situation, ambivalent towards the baby, uncaring husband, and controlling and powerful in-laws. Women felt hopelessness, helplessness and loss of control. They were trapped in a situation that had no way of escape except by violent means, such as homicide or suicide. Feelings towards the baby were ambivalent, both hate and love. Several women had injured, or had thought of injuring or killing, their babies and/or themselves. Women's unhappiness was attributed to a noncaring husband, and controlling and powerful in-laws. Generally, women did not seek help until their depression was diagnosed by screening tests., Conclusion: This study has revealed insights into how women experienced postnatal depression in Hong Kong, and what they perceived as contributing to their depression. These insights may be used to guide interventions for women and their families to raise awareness regarding the support childbearing women need.
