Concerns of equity with respect to the community college model in East Asia persist in educational research. In this study, we described and analysed students' "lived experience" in community colleges in Hong Kong in terms of the "warming up" or "cooling out" of their educational desire. Semistructured interviews with 14 graduates of community colleges in Hong Kong were conducted to determine how their experiences at community colleges affected their educational expectations and the extent to which community colleges help students reconsider their educational disadvantages in a competitive, meritocratic and massified higher education system. The qualitative interview data were inductively thematised into four aspects of college experience in relation to their educational expectations. The data revealed that Hong Kong's community colleges help some students develop their capabilities and change their educational expectations through democratic admissions, liberal pedagogic environments, learner-centred formative assessment and student services for strategic university articulation. Rather than cooling-out students' educational desire (characterised by gradual disengagement, objective denial, alternative achievement), community colleges in Hong Kong provide a second chance for failing and disadvantaged students to pursue a university education, but this warming-up function applies only to students who benefitted from the liberal mode of assessment and discovered and developed their academic capabilities in their college experience. The paper ends with a critical analysis of the problem of such warming up of educational desire and the extent to which community colleges can empower disadvantaged students for a good life. Aim: This study aimed to understand the perceptions and experiences of sexual violence among Chinese men who have sex with men (MSM) in Hong Kong. Design: The study adopted a qualitative descriptive design with thematic analysis. Methods: Thirty‐one Chinese MSM were recruited in Hong Kong from May to June 2019 using purposive sampling. Individual semi‐structured interviews were conducted with the participants. The interview data were transcribed verbatim from the recordings and analysed using Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis approach. Results: Four themes were identified: (1) different forms of sexual violence, from physical to virtual; (2) inner struggles with fears and worry; (3) low awareness and perceived risk of sexual violence – 'it has nothing to do with me' and (4) dilemma towards sexual violence prevention. Conclusion: The study provided qualitative evidence regarding the experiences and perceptions of sexual violence among Chinese MSM in Hong Kong. Physical and image‐based forms of sexual violence were identified, which led the participants to experience psychological distress, fear of contracting human immunodeficiency virus/other sexually transmitted infections, notoriety within the gay community, and discrimination and stigmatization within their family and workplace. To reduce the risk of sexual violence, some participants were cautious about the venue in which they engaged in sex and the habit of sharing sexually explicit photos with others. However, some participants had low awareness and perceived risk of sexual violence. Impacts: This study was the first to fill the research gap on sexual violence issues among Chinese MSM using dating apps in Hong Kong. The qualitative findings enhanced the scholarly understanding of Chinese MSM's perceptions and experiences of sexual violence. The study findings can help nursing staff and other healthcare professionals to develop tailored primary, secondary and tertiary sexual violence prevention programmes for MSM or beyond. Support care is rarely assessed and offered to people with long-term neurologic conditions, particularly Parkinson's disease. This study aimed to assess the symptom burden and unmet support care needs in people with mild to severe Parkinson's disease. Cross-sectional study. Patients with Parkinson's disease were recruited from neurologic outpatient clinics from 3 East and Southeast Asian regions, including Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Thailand. A standardized set of questionnaires assessing unmet care needs [Palliative care Outcome Scale (POS)], disease-specific symptom burden (POS–Symptoms–Parkinson's Disease), generic health-related quality of life (HRQOL) (EQ-5D-3L), and sociodemographic and clinical background. Completed questionnaires (n = 186) were collected from 64 Hong Kong Chinese, 64 Taiwanese, and 58 Thai patients. Their mean age was 67.23 ± 8.07, 54% were female, and 80% had mild-to-moderate disease. Their mean POS score was 10.48 ± 6.38, indicating moderate unmet support needs. Two-thirds of the participants rated constipation, fatigue, leg problem, and daytime somnolence as the most prevalent and burdensome symptoms. Patients from Hong Kong and Taiwan prioritized psychosocial and spiritual support, whereas Thai patients prioritized physical needs and emotional concerns. Multivariate adjustment for demographics and clinical characteristics showed that high psychological, spiritual, and practical burdens are associated with young age, male gender, and advanced disease stages. Patients experience significant symptom burden and moderate unmet support needs at the early to middle stage of Parkinson's disease. Routine assessment of changes in symptom burden should start early. The timely referral of support care services should provide appropriate psychospiritual and practical support in addition to motor training. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic condition that results in not only physical deterioration but also a spectrum of psychosocial outcomes that demand continuous adjustment and coping. Previous qualitative research into the illness experiences has been conducted mainly in Western populations, yet little is known about Chinese PD patients' adjustment. The aims of this qualitative description study were to (a) understand the illness and adjustment experiences, (b) explore the reasons for psychological distress and (c) discern the adjustment strategies adopted along the course of illness, from the perspective of Hong Kong Chinese PD patients. Individual semi‐structured interviews were conducted with 14 patients from January to June, 2016. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Two themes emerged from the interviews: confronting the changes caused by Parkinson's disease and adjusting to living with Parkinson's disease. Participants reported experiencing turmoil due to progressive loss of functions and abilities, changes in role and identity and unattended emotional needs in the course of their illness. Considering the chronic and fluctuating nature of PD, rehabilitation programs should be applied to address not only the physical symptoms but also the psychological needs of PD patients. Background: Psychological distress is prevalent among people with Parkinson's disease (PD) and aggravates their motor symptoms, thereby leading to increased disability, high healthcare costs, and poor health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The under-recognition and adverse effects of the pharmacological management of anxiety and depression among the PD population are considerable. Thus, adopting a Complementary and Alternative Management (CAM) approach to address this problem is important. Yoga, one of the most common "mind-body" CAM therapies, can improve the psychological wellbeing of people with chronic illnesses. However, limited research on the effects of yoga in people with PD has been conducted. This study will determine the effects of yoga on the psychological wellbeing of people with mild-to-moderate PD and will compare these effects with those of stretching and resistance training exercises.Methods: A community-based, single-blind, randomized trial will be conducted. A total of 126 subjects will be recruited and randomly divided into yoga (n = 63) or stretching and resistance exercise (n = 63) groups. For 8 weeks, the yoga group will receive a weekly 90-min session of yoga, and the control group will receive a weekly 60-min session of stretching and resistance exercises. The primary outcome will be the level of psychological distress measured using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. The secondary outcomes will include the severity of motor symptoms measured by the Movement Disorders Society - Unified Parkinson's Disease Scale - Part III Motor Examination; mobility, balance, and fall risk measured by the Timed Up and Go test; spiritual wellbeing measured by the Holistic Wellbeing Scale; and HRQoL measured by the Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire-8. Assessment will be conducted at baseline, 8th, and 20th weeks of follow-ups.Discussion: This study will be the first randomized trial to compare the effect of yoga versus stretching and resistance training exercises in a PD population. Results will contribute to the value of yoga as a therapeutic option for managing psychological distress in PD patients. Multiple outcomes including psychological, physiological, and spiritual and HRQoL will also be measured to elucidate the potential mechanisms of yoga. The effect of yoga on people with chronic illnesses will further be elucidated. Objectives: Depressive symptoms are common in older people; most previous research on elderly depression focused on individual-level characteristics or neighborhood socioeconomic status. Modifiable neighborhood characteristics of older people dwelling in low-income communities are under-studied. This study aims to identify potentially modifiable social and physical neighborhood characteristics that influence depressive symptoms independent of individual-level characteristics among older Chinese. Method: Data came from a cross-sectional survey conducted in four low-income public rental housing estates in Hong Kong in 2012. We interviewed a total of 400 elderly residents. The structured questionnaire covered demographics, activities of daily living, recent fall history, neighborhood support networks, and perceived proximity by walk to community facilities. Multiple regression was used to test whether inclusion of neighborhood factors in addition to individual characteristics increases model fit in explaining depressive symptoms in elders with low socioeconomic status. Results: At individual level, activities of daily living and income significantly predicted depressive symptoms. Receiving support from friends or neighbors is associated with fewer depressive symptoms. However, participants who received organizational support had a 1.17 points of increase on the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15). At-ease walkable proximity to medical facilities was positively associated with a better GDS score. Conclusion: Neighborhood support networks and perceived proximity by walk to community facilities contribute significantly to depressive symptoms among low-income elders. Programs and policies that facilitate neighborhood support and commuting or promote facility accessibility may help ameliorate depressive symptoms common among low-income elders. Abstract: This study aims to investigate levels of POPs in meat, edible oils, nuts, milk and wine collected from Hong Kong. Naphthalene, pp-DDE, beta-, gamma-HCH and PBDE 47 were detected in most of the food items. Goose liver accumulated the highest PAHs (47.9ngg−1 wet wt), DDTs (25.6), HCHs (13.0), PCBs (4.17), PBDEs (468pgg−1 wet wt) among all the selected food. Meat and nut groups had significant (p <0.01 or 0.05) correlations between lipid contents and concentrations of PAHs (meat: r =0.878), HCHs (meat: r =0.753), DDTs (meat: r =0.937; nuts: r =0.968) and PCBs (meat: r =0.832; nut: r =0.946). The concentrations of DDTs, HCHs and PCBs in vegetable oil were lower, but HCHs in fish oil were higher, when compared with other countries. The concentrations of PAHs, DDTs, PCBs and PBDEs in food tested in the present study were all below various safety guidelines. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The objective of this study was to quantify organic chlorinated pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in blood plasma collected from 111 healthy residents in Hong Kong to assess the levels of these pollutants in the general population during the period of March to April, 2008. Concentrations of these residues in blood plasma obtained from the Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Naphthalene, phenanthrene, p,p'-DDE, PCB-180, and PBDE-47 were detected in 100% of the participants. Females had significantly greater concentrations of acenaphthylene (female: 93.3 ng/g lipid; male: 39.8, p < 0.05), anthracene (22.3; 15.3, p < 0.05), fluoranthene (138; 125, p < 0.05), p,p'-DDE, p,p'-DDT, PCB-183, BDE-99 than males. Blood of smokers contained significantly greater (p < 0.05) concentrations of acenaphthene, benzo(a)pyrene, p,p'-DDE, p,p'-DDT, PCB-138, BDE-47, and BDE-99 than did blood of nonsmokers. Positive correlations were found between concentrations of each class of pollutant, with respect to seafood diet habit, Body Mass Index (BMI), and age. Concentrations of HCHs and DDTs in blood plasma of healthy Hong Kong residents were greater than those of other countries, and it was found that smoking, consumption of a seafood diet, BMI, and age could influence concentrations in human blood. Background: Even though the negative impacts of nocturia on sleep quality and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) have been documented in previous research, their interrelationship has been poorly studied. This study aimed to explore whether nocturia would affect sleep quality, which in turn affects HRQOL.Methods: Participants aged 40 and above were randomly recruited from a Hong Kong public primary care clinic. Participants were asked to report the average number of nocturia (waking up at night to void) pisodes per night over a 1-month period. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the 12-Item Short Form Health Survey version 2 (SF-12 v2) were administered. The mediation analysis was tested using multistage regression approach and bootstrap method.Results: Of the 500 subjects who completed the survey, 31.2% reported symptomatic nocturia (having ≥2 nocturia episodes per night), and 60.4% experienced poor sleep quality (a PSQI global score > 5). Respondents with symptomatic nocturia had a poorer HRQOL in the domains of physical functioning (PF), role physical (RP) and social functioning (SF), general health (GH), vitality (VT) and physical component summary (PCS) of the SF-12 v2 than those without. Compared with the respondents without poor sleep quality, those with poor sleep quality had poorer HRQOL across all domains and summaries of the SF-12 v2. Mediation analysis found that sleep quality fully mediated the association between nocturia and the PF, RP and SF domains of the SF-12 v2, respectively, and partially mediated the association between nocturia and the GH, VT and PCS domains of the SF-12 v2, respectively.Conclusions: We found that sleep quality mediated the association between nocturia and HRQOL. Objective: To explore factors associated with depression and COVID‐19 related fear among pregnant women and new mothers. Design: A cross‐sectional survey was conducted in China from July 2020 to July 2021. Sample: A total of 3027 pregnant and new mothers were recruited. Measurement: Sociodemographic characteristics and the perceptions of the COVID‐19 pandemic were collected. The Patient Health Questionnaire‐9 (PHQ‐9) and the Fear Scale was used to assess the depressive and fear level towards the COVID‐19 pandemic, respectively. Results: Approximately 17.2% of the participants had depression (PHQ‐9 ≥10). In Hong Kong, participants who perceived that they have increased knowledge to prevent infection were less likely to have depression (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 0.83; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.74–0.94). There was no association between perceived severity if infected and severity of spread and the depression level in our sample. An inverse relationship was found between the COVID‐19 related fear level and perceived knowledge to prevent infection (Beta‐coefficient [β] = ‐0.20; 95% CI = ‐0.38 to ‐0.02). Conclusion: Public health nurses need to promote accurate and up to date COVID‐19 related information at clinical and community settings and implement effective screening for depression and fear symptoms to identify these high‐risk groups to improve women's psychological well‐being. Introduction: Mindfulness training (MT) has shown preliminary efficacy as a behavioral treatment for smoking cessation. We examined the effect of a brief-MT intervention on smoking cessation for Chinese women in workplaces in Hong Kong, China.Methods: In this pilot randomized controlled trial, 213 daily smokers were recruited from workplaces and computer-randomized into the intervention (n = 114) or control (n = 99) groups. Participants in both groups received a self-help booklet. Participants in the intervention group additionally attended 2 sessions of a brief-MT workshop. The primary outcome was self-reported 7-day point-prevalence abstinence (PPA) at 6 months. Secondary outcomes were biochemically validated abstinence (exhaled CO < 4 ppm and salivary cotinine < 10 ng/mL) and smoking reduction at 6 months. Analyses were done by intention to treat. We conducted a post-trial qualitative evaluation on participants in the intervention group (n = 14). Data were analyzed thematically.Results: At 6-month follow-up, self-reported 7-day PPA were similar between the intervention and control groups (18.4% vs. 21.2%; P = 0.61). Very few participated in biochemical validation (n = 17), and validated abstinence and smoking reduction rates showed no significant difference (5.3% vs. 11.1%, P = 0.12 and 20.2% vs. 20.2%, P = 1.00, respectively). A posteriori analysis showed that brief-MT participants who were psychologically engaged with the intervention had greater 6-month PPA. Qualitative evaluation showed brief-MT reduced stress but its effectiveness was restrained by the insufficient home practice.Conclusions: This pilot trial on a brief-MT intervention for smoking cessation on Chinese women in workplaces showed feasibility, but improving compliance is needed to maximize the efficacy in future fully powered trials.
