The existing conventional vehicle transportation landscape in India is grappling with challenges stemming from extensive air pollution, health risks, surging oil prices, limited fossil fuel resources, substantial oil import expenses and energy volatility. To counter these issues, Electric Vehicles (EVs) are progressively replacing internal combustion engines, offering a promising route toward decarbonization and mitigating climate concerns. EVs rely on electric motors powered by batteries, predominantly Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), known for their superior attributes such as low self-discharge, high energy density and extended life cycle. Nevertheless, LIB performance is significantly influenced by operating temperatures, with suboptimal conditions leading to decreased efficiency, power loss and faster aging. Addressing this, an effective Battery Thermal Management System (BTMS) becomes crucial to maintain batteries at optimal temperatures, enhancing their efficiency and safety. This study focuses on a computational analysis of passive heating systems employing Fins and Phase Change Materials (PCM) for 18650 Li-ion battery thermal management at low temperatures, with specific attention to battery module analysis. Numerical analysis using ANSYS FLUENT investigates the influence of varying PCM thickness on heat transfer, predicting temperature distribution and discussing its impact on battery output performance. The design of lithium‐ion battery pack to meet the power requirements of two‐wheeled electric bikes for Indian conditions is studied here. Theoretical calculations are performed based on the technical data collected from various resources in India. In particular, the two‐wheeled "Activa 6G" vehicle is considered for the analysis. Based on the numerical analysis, a relation between cell parameters such as: C‐rate, voltage, capacity, pack configuration, and vehicle dynamics parameters like: weight of the vehicle, payload, travel range per charge, and energy consumption, has been established. Commercial cylindrical cells, namely: 18650, 21 700, and 26 650 are used in all the calculations. The corresponding battery packs are designed considering a range of 100 km. Furthermore, simulations are performed to understand the voltage‐discharge characteristics, state of charge and variation of cell concentration with respect to time as the battery discharges. The studies are extended to analyze the battery thermal management to estimate the degradation and heat generation rate, and hence, the optimum operating parameters, that is, optimal electrode thicknesses and particle size to enhance the endurance. Based on the degradation and heat generation profiles, the life of the battery pack made of 26 650 cells is found to be better as compared to the battery packs made of 18 650 and 21 700 cells. Furthermore, the analysis is extended for battery packs made of 26 650 cells in four different configurations, considering air and mineral oil as the cooling fluids to estimate the maximum temperature and hence degradation characteristics. Tapered configuration is found to be the best configuration among the four, yielding lowest maximum temperature and capacity fading. On the other hand, when mineral oil is used as the cooling fluid in rectangular configuration, the maximum operating temperature is found to be reduced by 4.49 K. Renewable energy is the most prominent sustainable rescue to satisfy the present-day increasing energy demand. Storage technology must also mature to complement its large-scale integration feasibility and mitigate intermittent, unpredictable, and unscheduled electricity sources. With the enhancement in technology and sustainability impact, battery energy storage systems are gaining popularity. The wide range of applications and their constraints are reviewed in this literature. Different models, such as system-resilient, planning, operational, etc., are analyzed in the present context. Application of BESS is restricted due to the temperature rise caused by heat production as it operates, which may eventually lead to fire hazards. The battery thermal model can be coupled with equivalent circuit model. Integrating electrical ECM with the thermal model involves estimating terminal voltage and current. In this work, evaluations and comparisons of different ECM are demonstrated, and their advantages and disadvantages are juxtaposed concerning the model's structural complexity, accuracy, simulation run time, and differential equations. However, the storage capacity of the battery fades over time. Therefore, this paper reviews various causes of deterioration and different battery degradation models. This is followed by inspecting multiple active, passive, and hybrid battery thermal management systems. A novel model is proposed to realize optimal scheduling in conjunction with spatiotemporal parasitic redressal. Further, with the understanding of BTMS, the study attempts to correlate the safety issues related to BESS, earmarking some significant accidents through the root cause analysis. This work also highlights the abiding codes and standards. An intimately interconnected and explicable technological upliftment in the avenues mentioned above is leading India in the field of BESS, and a list of systems at an appreciable stage of development in India is presented towards the end.
