Mikania micrantha is an economically damaging invasive weed, which is widely naturalized in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. This weed has reported yield losses in various cash crops and plantation crops in South East Asia including India. M. micrantha was found to change the soil microbial communities (bacteria, fungi and actinomycetes) as well as the soil chemical properties. It enhances a significant increase in aerobic bacteria but decreases in anaerobic bacteria due to which infested soil were free from other weeds. Similarly, in soil chemical characteristics significant increases in pH, total N and P were observed and a decrease in soil organic matter where M. micrantha is prevalent. It has allelopathic properties which affect neighbouring crops, weeds, insects and pathogens. This weed produces allelochemicals (phenolics, flavonoids, alkaloids and terpenes) that may be released by volatilization and decomposition of plant debris. It was also found that the aqueous leaf extract of invasive weed M. micrantha inhibited seed germination and seedling growth of various cereals, vegetables, and other plants. A similar result was found in test crops but there was no affected case found in the greenhouse experiment. Background: Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is a persistent middle ear disease with high risk of irreversible complications in absence of timely management. It is a massive health problem in India having the highest prevalence rate (>4%) requiring urgent attention. Aims and Objectives: The aim of the study was to find out risk factors, microbiological profile, with their susceptibility pattern, and of ear discharge in CSOM patients to provide guidelines for the empirical treatment. Materials and Methods: Ear discharge samples from 135 clinically diagnosed CSOM patients were collected and processed. Microbial isolates were identified and drug susceptibility testing was conducted using Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. Results: Pseudomonas species (59/135, 43.70%) was the predominant isolate followed by Staphylococcus species (37/135, 27.40%) while Aspergillus species (10/12, 83.33%) was the predominant fungus isolated. No anaerobic bacteria were isolated on culture. Gram-negative bacilli were most susceptible to Meropenem (100%) and Amikacin (100%) while Pseudomonas species was to Imipenem (98.35%). Gram-positive cocci showed 100% susceptibility to Vancomycin, Linezolid, and Doxycycline. Conclusion: A continuous and periodic evaluation of microbiological pattern of CSOM and antimicrobial sensitivity of isolates is necessary for forming the basis of empirical treatment which shall aid in decreasing the potential risk of complications. Background: Intracranial abscesses have been a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge since time immemorial for both the microbiologists and the neurosurgeons. There is paucity of detailed studies documenting the infecting organism causing brain abscesses in South India. Aims: The study aimed at identifying and assessing the prevalence of aerobic, anaerobic bacteria and fungi associated with brain abscesses at a tertiary care hospital in South India. Methods and Material: Eight years data was collected from the records of culture reports from 2007 to 2010 and 2013 to 2018. The corresponding clinical case records were retrieved for the assessment of risk factors. Risk factors of brain abscess development were assessed based on clinical cases records. Results: Data from 140 brain abscess cases obtained over a period of 8 years were analyzed. Out of the 140 samples, 66 (47.14%) were culture positive in which 33 (50%) had single aerobic/facultative anaerobic bacteria, 20 (30.3%) had mixture of more than one aerobic/facultative anaerobic bacteria, 12 (18.18%) had single obligate anaerobic bacteria and 1(1.5%) sample had Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolated. Among the total 92 isolates, Pseudomonas aeruginosa (21/92, 23%) and Staphylococcus aureus (20/92, 22%) predominated. Bacteroides fragilis group was the most common obligate anaerobe isolated. There were no fungal isolates. As there were various isolates isolated, hence there is heterogeneity of isolates detected Neuroanatomically, parietal lobe (45/140, 32%) was the most common location. Otogenic infection was the major risk factor for parietal and temporal lobe abscess (P value <.05). Conclusions: It has become essential for the microbiologists to be aware of unusual isolates from brain abscess and its complex nature. Background and Objectives: Anaerobic infections are usually caused by the host's endogenous flora due to a breach in the anatomical barriers and Bacteroides spp. are the most notorious organisms associated with anaerobic infections. The identification of anaerobes has been a challenge since times. MALDI-TOF-MS is a boon for aiding the rapid detection of anaerobic organisms and has helped us to enlist the distribution of various anaerobic pathogens. Materials and Methods: This retrospective analysis (January 2018 to December 2019) was carried out in a tertiary care hospital in North India, in which the anaerobic microbiological profile of all patients admitted to surgical wards, ICU, and OPD of various departments (Orthopedics, Surgery, Gynecology, and Obstetrics) was reviewed. Samples received were immediately processed aerobically (5% sheep blood agar and Mac Conkeyagar) as well as anaerobically (RCM and freshly prepared sheep blood agar) as per the laboratory protocols. Results: Bacteroides fragilis (19.12%) was the most common anaerobe whereas among aerobes Escherichia coli (30.2%) followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae (10.34%) were most commonly isolated. The majority of patients were males (56%) and the most common presentation was with abscesses (21.4%). Polymicrobial infections (69.51%) outnumbered monomicrobial ones (30.48%). Conclusion: There is a paucity of literature on anaerobe isolation from surgical infections from our country which motivated us to study anaerobic infections and the high sample size in our institute enabled us to study surgical infections from an anaerobic perspective. Co-infection with ancillary pathogens is a significant modulator of morbidity and mortality in infectious diseases. There have been limited reports of co-infections accompanying SARS-CoV-2 infections, albeit lacking India specific study. The present study has made an effort toward elucidating the prevalence, diversity and characterization of co-infecting respiratory pathogens in the nasopharyngeal tract of SARS-CoV-2 positive patients. Two complementary metagenomics based sequencing approaches, Respiratory Virus Oligo Panel (RVOP) and Holo-seq, were utilized for unbiased detection of co-infecting viruses and bacteria. The limited SARS-CoV-2 clade diversity along with differential clinical phenotype seems to be partially explained by the observed spectrum of co-infections. We found a total of 43 bacteria and 29 viruses amongst the patients, with 18 viruses commonly captured by both the approaches. In addition to SARS-CoV-2, Human Mastadenovirus, known to cause respiratory distress, was present in a majority of the samples. We also found significant differences of bacterial reads based on clinical phenotype. Of all the bacterial species identified, ∼60% have been known to be involved in respiratory distress. Among the co-pathogens present in our sample cohort, anaerobic bacteria accounted for a preponderance of bacterial diversity with possible role in respiratory distress. Clostridium botulinum , Bacillus cereus and Halomonas sp. are anaerobes found abundantly across the samples. Our findings highlight the significance of metagenomics based diagnosis and detection of SARS-CoV-2 and other respiratory co-infections in the current pandemic to enable efficient treatment administration and better clinical management. Chronic osteomyelitis is a relapsing, persistent, low-grade inflammation of bone caused by various infectious agents. The present study, conducted over a two-year period, on specimens received from cases of chronic osteomyelitis was, to determine the frequency of isolation of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria and to analyse their antimicrobial susceptibility pattern. Specimens were processed for Gram stain, aerobic and anaerobic culture, and were identified according to standard techniques. Significant growth was observed in 102/204 specimens, in which aerobic growth was observed in 62 (60.8%) and anaerobic in 40 (39.2%). Resistance to metronidazole and clindamycin was observed in 6.7% and 30% of the anaerobic isolates, respectively. None of these were resistant to meropenem. A significant proportion of anaerobic isolates were found to be resistant to commonly used empirical drugs, such as clindamycin, thus necessitating a need for routine anaerobic susceptibility testing. Brain abscess accounts for 8% of all intracranial insults in developing countries. Anaerobic infections are missed in most cases due to difficult isolation techniques. This study was done to determine the anaerobic bacteriological profile of brain abscess, their distribution according to sociodemographic variables, anatomical location, management and the outcome during the subjects' stay in a neurosciences' speciality hospital. We included 190 cases of confirmed anaerobic brain abscess from the year 1998–2017. The median age was 22 years with more males (73% of 190 cases) than females. The Bacteroides spp. were the most common (64%) anaerobic organisms isolated followed by Gram positive anaerobic cocci (51%). While 67% of the samples showed purely anaerobic bacteria on culture, remaining were mixed. Introduction: Trophic ulcer is a dreaded complication of leprosy. Secondary infection compounds the damage to the already neglected ulcer. Aims: To find out the bacterial pathogens in the isolates from trophic ulcers of leprosy and to find the drug sensitivity of the aerobic isolates so as to start a suitable antibiotic therapy. Methodology: An institution-based, cross-sectional study done over a period of 2 years. Swab was taken from the deeper part of the ulcer. It was put on a suitable culture media. Bacteriological profile was determined and antibiogram was done subsequently. Results: Sixty patients with trophic ulcer secondary to leprosy were screened, among which all were screened for aerobic isolates and 38 were screened for anaerobic isolates. Among the aerobic isolates, 88% of patients were culture-positive. The most common organism was Staphylococcus aureus (37.7%), followed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (22.64%), Proteus mirabilis (15.09%), Escherischia coli (13.2%), Klebsiella (9.43%). Maximum overall sensitivity was seen with amikacin (93.1%) and linezolid (89.65%). Maximum overall resistance was noted with cotrimoxazole (58.62%) and coamoxiclav (51.72%). Among the 38 patients cultured for anaerobic isolates, 17 were culture-positive for anaerobic organisms. Isolates showing Peptococcus were 6 (15.7%), purely Peptostreptococcus were 4 (10.5%), purely bacteroides were 3 (7.8%), and mixed growths were 4 (10.5%). Conclusion: Secondary bacterial infection is quite common in leprosy trophic ulcers. The most common organism was Staphylococcus aureus. Isolates were mostly sensitive to amikacin and linezolid and resistant to cotrimoxazole and coamoxiclav. Anaerobic isolates were not uncommon, with Peptococcus being the most common among them. Background: Amebiasis, caused by Entamoeba histolytica (E. histolytica), is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in developing countries. Mortality due to amebiasis is mostly by extra intestinal infections, amebic liver abscess being the most common one. This study was conducted to determine the current epidemiological status, risk factors, associated microflora and strain variation of E. histolytica causing liver abscesses. Methods/Findings: A total of 115 liver abscess cases comprising of 107 (93%) males and 8 (6.9%) females were included in the study. Microscopic examination of pus samples from the abscesses and species discrimination using nested multiplex PCR showed the presence of E. histolytica in 101 (87.5%) cases. Data collected by face to face interviews using a pre tested questionnaire suggested intake of untreated drinking water (ORs: 6.4, p = 0.002), habit of alcohol consumption (ORs: 4.0, p = 0.019) and lack of urban services (ORs: 0.08, p = 0.017) to be major risk factors associated with E. histolytica infections. The study of associated bacterial flora through aerobic culture of liver aspirates and conventional PCR for detection of anaerobes revealed the presence of Fusobacterium (19, 25.5%), Peptococcus (19, 25.5%), Prevotella (18, 24.3%), Bacteroides (8, 10.8%), Staphylococcus aureus (3, 4%), Escherichia coli (2, 2.7%), Peptostreptococcus (2, 2.7%), Clostridium (2, 2.7%) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (1, 1.3%). Further to study the clonality, genotyping of E. histolytica targeting six tRNA-linked polymorphic STR loci (A-L, D-A, N-K, R-R, STGA -D and S-Q) was carried out which showed the presence of 89 different genotypes in the liver aspirate samples. Conclusion: The findings highlight the high prevalence of genetically diverse E. histolytica from the liver abscess cases in this geographical region. Clostridium sordellii is a gram-positive anaerobic bacteria most commonly isolated from skin and soft tissue infection, penetrating injurious and intravenous drug abusers. The exotoxins produced by the bacteria are associated with toxic shock syndrome. The anaerobic batch test (45 days at 37°C) was performed to describe the effect of thermal pretreatment at moderate temperatures (60, 80, and 100°C) over durations of 10 and 20 minutes on the enhancement of biogas production using hotel food waste from city of Jaipur, India. The results showed that the total cumulative biogas production with thermal pretreatment (100°C, 10 minutes) was 41% higher than the control. Also, this alternative gets first rank using multicriteria decision making model, VIKOR. This outcome was obtained due to the enhancement of degradation of organic compounds such as protein and volatile solids that occurred in the linear trend. Modified Gompertz and Logistic models were used to study the effect of different pretreatment parameters on lag time and biogas yield. Scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were also employed to investigate the effect of thermal pretreatment on the physiochemical properties of food waste. Anaerobic microbial communities in the anoxic zones degrade organic matter in estuarine sediments. Thermodynamic energy yield for the oxidation reactions with various electron acceptors decreases in the order of O 2 > NO 3 - > Mn 4 + > Fe 3 + > SO 4 2- > CO 2 . The predominant terminal electron accepting (TEA) process has an influence on the biogeochemical cycles of nutrients as well as the production of important greenhouse gases such as nitrous oxide and methane from estuarine sediments. The research questions of this study were (1) what are the environmental factors (pH, salinity, organic carbon, sulphate, redox potential) explaining variability in TEA activities such as nitrate reduction rate (NRR), iron reduction rate (IRR), sulphate reduction rate (SRR) and methane production rate (MPR) and (2) which is the predominant TEA process during degradation of organic matter. To determine the TEA activities, sediment samples collected from 13 sampling stations of Ashtamudi estuary during monsoon 2014 and summer 2015 were incubated with sulphate depleted artificial seawater, under anaerobic conditions for 72 h, in microcosms. Spatial variations dominated temporal variations for environmental variables. Nevertheless, biogeochemical processes showed a distinct seasonal variation. Total TEA activity was higher during summer than monsoon, indicating the higher heterotrophic microbial activity favored by high temperature. Individually, SRR was the maximum during summer, while NRR, IRR and MPR were the maximum during monsoon. Sulphate reduction was observed to be the predominant electron accepting process in all sampling stations with cumulative values of 3125.79 and 4046.07 nmol cm -3 day -1 during monsoon and summer respectively. This was followed by NRR, IRR and MPR. Although thermodynamically more favorable, NRR could not predominate due to scarcity of nitrate in sediments. Nevertheless, two-fold and five-fold increase in methanogenesis and denitrification were observed respectively during monsoon in sampling stations, which cannot be ignored, owing to the importance of methane and nitrous oxide as a potent greenhouse gas. Clostridium perfringens is a common anaerobic foodborne pathogen known to produce >20 toxins. In nature, this bacterium has 7 different toxinotypes (A-G) based on the presence of its 6 main toxins. The present study examined the occurrence of different toxinotypes of this bacterium in the ichthyofauna and aquatic environments of Kashmir Himalayan lakes, India. A total of 510 samples (210 water; 150 each of common carp and snow trout) were collected from 3 different lacustrine habitats (Dal, Anchar and Nigeen Lakes) of the region. By performing 16S rRNA PCR test, it was observed that all 210 water samples and 80 (26.66%) of 300 fish samples tested for this specific bacterial species were positive. Then by using multiplex-PCR targeting six virulence genes of C. perfringens , it was confirmed that all the 290 isolates from water and fish samples were positive for Toxinotype A, as only cpa toxin gene was amplified. Phylogenetic analysis of the amplified gene and its amino-acid sequences revealed 95%–98% homology with analogous sequences of this bacterial strain reported from China, Egypt and India. Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) continues to affect hospitalized patients and community populations worldwide. In contrast to the substantial resources invested in the diagnosis and prevention of CDI in high-income countries, this anaerobic toxigenic bacterium has been largely overlooked in low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs) such as India, where there remains a paucity of epidemiologic data evaluating the burden of CDI. Extensive multi-institutional studies describing C. difficile epidemiology in India have not yet been performed. Given recent economic growth in many Asian countries, with aging populations, increased access to healthcare and widespread inappropriate use of antimicrobials, C. difficile is likely to be highly prevalent and causing significant disease burden. Greater efforts are required to enhance awareness of this neglected pathogen, through educating healthcare practitioners to test for CDI. There is also an urgent need to strengthen laboratory capacity, and ideally establish a national reference laboratory, to help facilitate a greater understanding of the molecular epidemiology of CDI in India and other LMICs. Background: Abscesses are often polymicrobial in nature and require judicious combination of antimicrobial therapy in addition to surgical debridement for cure. Objectives: To find out the prevalence of aerobes and anaerobes in abscess and their antimicrobial susceptibility pattern. Methods: This prospective analysis included 120 pus samples from patients with superficial and deep abscesses, attending surgical departments over a period of one year. Both aerobic and anaerobic cultures were done and all isolates were subjected to antibiotic sensitivity using modified Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. Results: Out of total 134 isolates, 74.17% were aerobes, 20.83% were anaerobes and 5% were mixed infections. 106 (88.33%) were monomicrobial and 14 (11.67%) were polymicrobial. Staphylococcus aureus was predominant isolate (41.04%), followed by E.coli (17.91%) and Peptostreptococcus spp. (14.18%). Methicillin resistance in S. aureus was found to be 32.7% and 32.6% of the gram negative bacilli were extended spectrum beta-lactamase producers. All the anaerobes were sensitive to metronidazole, followed by chloramphenicol and clindamycin (91-100%). Conclusions: Continuous monitoring of antimicrobial susceptibility pattern in individual settings together with their judicious use is emphasised to minimise emergence of drug-resistant bacteria. Objective: Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is a prevailing and notorious infection in developing countries causing serious local damage and threatening complications. Early and effective treatment based on the knowledge of causing micro organisms and their sensitivity results in good clinical recovery and prevents from damage and complications. The study intended to identify the incidence of bacterial infection in the CSOM and to determine their sensitivity to current antibiotics. Methods: After clinical evaluation, middle ear secretion was taken for bacteriological examination from 250 patients meeting the inclusion criteria. All children with cholesteatoma and those with tumors occluding the (ear) canal were excluded. The samples were processed as per the standard microbiological techniques. Results: A total of 272 bacterial agents were isolated from 250 patients aged between 8 months and 65 years. 220 samples yielded pure growth and 22 were mixed, Pseudomonas aeruginosa (39.7%) was the commonest isolate followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus. Among anaerobic bacteria, Bacteriodes was the predominate bacteria isolated. Most of the isolates were resistant to commonly used antibiotics. ESBL evaluation revealed that 20.4 % of gram negative bacteria were extended beta lactamase producers. 63.4% of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, 20.3% of Klebsiella pneumoniae were the predominate organisms resistant to 3 GC. Conclusion: Pseudomonas aeruginosa was the most common bacteria isolated from chronic discharging ears followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae. Amikacin was found to be the most suitable drug followed by ceftazidime for Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The high rate of multiple drug resistance for frequently used antibiotics raises serious concern. Abstract: Soil and sewage act as a reservoir of animal pathogens and their dissemination to animals profoundly affects the safety of our food supply. Moreover, acquisition and further spread of antibiotic resistance determinants among pathogenic bacterial populations is the most relevant problem for the treatment of infectious diseases. Bacterial strains from soil and sewage are a potential reservoir for antimicrobial resistance genes. Accurate species determination for anaerobes from environmental samples has become increasingly important with the re-emergence of anaerobic bacteremia and prevalence of multiple-drug-resistant microorganisms. Soil samples were collected from various locations of planar India and the diversity of anaerobic bacteria was determined by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Viable counts of anaerobic bacteria on anaerobic agar and SPS agar ranged from 1.0×102 cfu/g to 8.8×107 cfu/g and nil to 3.9×106 cfu/g, respectively. Among clostrdia, Clostridium bifermentans (35.9%) was the most dominant species followed by Clostridium perfringens (25.8%). Sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of C. perfringens beta2 toxin gene (cpb2) fragment indicated specific phylogenetic affiliation with cluster Ia for 5 out of 6 strains. Antibiotic susceptibility for 30 antibiotics was tested for 74 isolates, revealing resistance for as high as 16–25 antibiotics for 35% of the strains tested. Understanding the diversity of the anaerobic bacteria from soil and sewage with respect to animal health and spread of zoonotic pathogen infections is crucial for improvements in animal and human health. The relationship between methanogenic flora and hydrogen (H(2)) production is considered to be a possible confounding factor in the interpretation of hydrogen breath tests (H(2)BT). Therefore, the present study was conducted prospectively and included 154 IBS patients (fulfilling Rome II criteria) and 286 age-and-sex-matched apparently healthy controls. Each subject underwent H(2)BT after overnight fasting using 25 g lactose. Methane and H(2) were measured using an SC Microlyser from Quintron, USA, at baseline and every 30 min for a total of 4 h. Subjects with fasting methane concentration <10 ppm were labeled as low methane producers (LMP) and >10 ppm as predominant methane producers (PMP). A rise >20 ppm over base line in hydrogen concentration was taken as +ve hydrogen breath test. IBS and control groups included 66.78% and 67.53% males, respectively. Mean age in the two groups were 48.52 +/- 30.54 years (range 15-68 years) and 45.67 +/- 30.54 years (range 15-78 years), respectively. Hydrogen breath test was +ve in 77/154 (50%) IBS patients and in 142/286 (49.65%) in controls (P > 0.05). It was also observed that the hydrogen breath test was -ve due to PMP in 5/77 (6.49%) of IBS patients and in 29/154 (20.14%) in controls. Background: Flatulence is a common symptom in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). This may be due to production of hydrogen by intestinal flora. With the presence of methanogenic flora, 4 mol of hydrogen (H(2)) are used with 1 mol of carbon dioxide (CO(2)) to produce 1 mol of methane (CH(4)), a process greatly reducing the volume of gas in the colon. However, the prevalence of methanogenic flora has not yet been reported in healthy and IBS patients from North India. Therefore, this study was planned.Methods: This study was conducted prospectively and included 345 patients with irritable bowel syndrome (fulfilling Rome II criteria) and 254 age- and gender-matched apparently healthy controls. Each subject underwent a hydrogen breath test using 10 g lactulose after an overnight fast. An SC Microlyser from Quintron, USA, was used to measure methane and hydrogen at baseline and at every 30 min for 4 h. Subjects with fasting methane concentration <10 p.p.m. were labeled as low methane producers (LMPs) and > 10 p.p.m. as predominant methane producers (PMPs).Results: The IBS and control groups included 66.78% and 67.53% men, respectively. Mean age in the two groups was 48.52 +/- 30.54 years (range 15-68 years) and 45.67 +/- 30.54 years (range 15-78 years), respectively. Prevalence of predominant methanogenic flora in IBS and control groups was 14.5% (50/345) and 34.6% (88/254), respectively (P < 0.001). Fifty-two out of 254 (20.6 %) were PMPs and 36 out of 254 (14.0%) were LMPs in controls. In contrast to this, IBS patients had 17 out of 354 (4.9%) that were PMPs and 33 out of 345 (9.6%) that were LMPs.Conclusion: Methanogenic flora was significantly lower in IBS patients from North India than in apparently healthy subjects. The microbial profile of an Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket Reactor based sewage treatment plant located at a suburb of Delhi, India, and possible risk due to the pathogenicity of the treated wastewater was investigated. Frequency of occurrence of Salmonella, Shigella and Vibrio was 100% at all the stages of sewage treatment. However, recovery of Vibrio was the highest among all the pathogens. The order of removal of all the pathogens was same at the different stages of the treatment. Ratio of counts of fecal coliforms (FC) and fecal streptococci (FS) at different stages of treatment showed the origin of contamination was from the human source. The average density of FC in the treated sewage was 4.6 × 105 MPN/100 ml, which exceeds the prescribed limit of 1,000 MPN/100 ml for the FC. The proposed national standard were evaluated with the help of potential risk on the basis of indicator to pathogen ratio, and the concept of Infective Dose (ID50) causing infection in 50% exposed population. The diversity population of microorganisms with the capability to use selenate as a terminal electron acceptor, reducing it to selenite and elemental selenium by the process known as dissimilatory selenate reduction, is largely unknown. The overall objective of this study was to gain an in-depth understanding of anaerobic biotransformation of selenium in the environment, particularly anaerobic respiration, and to characterize the microorganisms catalyzing this process. Here, we demonstrate the isolation and characterization of four novel anaerobic dissimilatory selenate-respiring bacteria enriched from a variety of sources, including sediments from three different water bodies in Chennai, India, and a tidal estuary in New Jersey. Strains S5 and S7 from India, strain KM from the Meadowlands, NJ, and strain pn1, categorized as a laboratory contaminant, were all phylogenetically distinct, belonging to various phyla in the bacterial domain. The 16S rRNA gene sequence shows that strain S5 constitutes a new genus belonging to Chrysiogenetes, while strain S7 belongs to the Deferribacteres, with greater than 98% 16S rRNA gene similarity to Geovibrio ferrireducens. Strain KM is related to Malonomonas rubra, Pelobacter acidigallici, and Desulfurornusa spp., with 96 to 97% 16S rRNA gene similarity. Strain pn1 is 99% similar to Pseudomonas stutzeri. Strains S5, S7, and KM are obligately anaerobic selenate-respiring microorganisms, while strain pn1 is facultatively anaerobic. Besides respiring selenate, all these strains also respire nitrate. The objective of this study was to determine the microbiological quality of farmed giant freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) collected from four freshwater farms located in Kerala (India). Microbiological counts on whole, deheaded, and deheaded and deveined prawn as well as on head and intestine were determined. Average counts (log10 cfu g-¹) on whole prawn were 6.9 (total mesophilic counts (TPC) at 37°C) and 4.1 (psychrotrophic count at 7°C). The results indicated that the aerobic counts were within the acceptable limit. The levels of enterococci and faecal coliforms in farmed M. rosenbergii were high. There was an increase in the numbers of enterococci and Staphylo- coccus aureus after deheading. The major groups of bacteria comprising the flora of M. rosenbergii were Aeromonadaceae, Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudo,nonas. Farmed M. rosenbergii carried pathogenic bacteria such as Enterococcus spp., S. aureus, Aeromonas hydrophila, A. veronii biovar sobria and Clostridium perfringens. The results of the study sug- gest adoption of good farming and post harvest practices to improve the microbiological quality of farmed freshwater prawn. Background: Paddy farming is one of the main occupations in coastal South India. Dermatological problems in paddy field workers have not received much attention.Aim: The purpose of this study was to study the dermatoses of the exposed parts of the body, viz. face, hands, and feet, in paddy field workers.Methods: Three hundred and forty-one workers were questioned and clinical findings noted. Scrapings for bacterial and fungal examination were taken by random selection.Results: Seventy-three per cent had work-related itching. Melasma was the commonest facial lesion (41.1%). The main problems on the hands were hyperkeratosis (26.4%), nail dystrophy (15.2%) and paronychia (8.8%). Common feet dermatoses included nail dystrophy (57.1%), pitted keratolysis (42.5%) and fissuring (23.5%). Common aerobic and anaerobic bacteria isolated from pitted keratolysis and intertrigo were Klebsiella and Clostridium species. Aspergillus species were the commonest fungus grown from intertrigo.Conclusions: Occupational dermatoses are common in paddy field workers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is paucity of information on the antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of oral anaerobic bacteria. In this study, an attempt has been made to evaluate the antimicrobial susceptibility/resistance trend of oral Gram negative bacteria from Indian subjects. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of 304 isolates against twelve different antibiotics were determined using gradient diffusion MIC strips. The organisms were isolated and identified based on phenotypic characteristics and included Porphyromonas gingivalis , Prevotella species, Tannerella forsythia, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcoitans, Eickenella corrodens and Capnocytophaga species. For each antimicrobial agent, MIC 50 and MIC 90 were calculated and expressed. Resistance to azithromycin, clindamycin, and amoxicillin was observed in most of the anaerobic bacterial species studied. High degree of susceptibility was observed to amoxillin-clavulanic acid, doxycycline and moxifloxacin. A single strain of P. melaninogenica was resistant to moxifloxacin. The susceptibility pattern varied with cephalosporins among species. Ceftriaxone showed highest and cefazolin least efficacy among cephalosporins. All anaerobic bacteria tested were susceptible to metronidazole. Strains of T. forsythia were more resistant to several antibiotics than other anaerobic bacteria. All three species of capnophilic bacteria displayed high degree of resistance to metronidazole and significant resistance to amoxicillin, azithromycin, clindamycin, cefazolin and cefuroxime. Amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, doxycycline, moxifloxacin and metronidazole appeared to be the most effective drugs against gram negative anaerobic bacteria. However, the MIC 50 and MIC 90 values against metronidazole were on the higher side of the normal indicating a potential for developing resistance. • This is the first study on the anti-microbial susceptibility pattern of oral gram negative anaerobes from India. • Resistance to clindamycin, azithromycin and amoxicillin was observed in most of the species studied. • All anaerobes studied were susceptible to metronidazole; however a high normal MIC 50 and MIC 90 values were common. • A. actinomycetemcomitans was the most resistant organism among capnophilic bacteria. The association of Prevotella bivia (P. bivia), a Gram negative obligate anaerobic bacillus with brain abscess has been rarely reported. We hereby, report a case of brain abscess in a 50-year-old man, who suffered a head trauma followed by decompression surgery 10 months ago. Aspirated pus sample grew Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and P. bivia sensitive to metronidazole. The patient recovered well after a brain abscess evacuation surgery and post-operative metronidazole therapy, confirming the pathogenic role of P. bivia in this case. • Most brain abscesses are of polymicrobial etiology. • This is the first report of brain abscess due to Prevotella bivia in India. • P. bivia and other pathogenic anaerobic bacteria can be rapidly identified by the MALDI-TOF MS. • Treatment with metronidazole for 10 days was found effective against this anaerobe. Background: Microbe-mediated redox transformation of arsenic (As) leading to its mobilization has become a serious environmental concern in various subsurface ecosystems especially within the alluvial aquifers. However, detailed taxonomic and eco-physiological attributes of indigenous bacteria from As impacted aquifer of Brahmaputra river basin has remained under-studied. Results: A newly isolated As-resistant and -transforming facultative anaerobic bacterium IIIJ3–1 from As-contaminated groundwater of Jorhat, Assam was characterized. Near complete 16S rRNA gene sequence affiliated the strain IIIJ3–1 to the genus Bacillus and phylogenetically placed within members of B. cereus sensu lato group with B. cereus ATCC 14579(T) as its closest relative with a low DNA-DNA relatedness (49.9%). Presence of iC17:0, iC15:0 fatty acids and menaquinone 7 corroborated its affiliation with B. cereus group, but differential hydroxy-fatty acids, C18:2 and menaquinones 5 & 6 marked its distinctiveness. High As resistance [Maximum Tolerable Concentration = 10 mM As3+, 350 mM As5+], aerobic As3+ (5 mM) oxidation, and near complete dissimilatory reduction of As 5+ (1 mM) within 15 h of growth designated its physiological novelty. Besides O2, cells were found to reduce As5+, Fe3+, SO42−, NO3−, and Se6+ as alternate terminal electron acceptors (TEAs), sustaining its anaerobic growth. Lactate was the preferred carbon source for anaerobic growth of the bacterium with As5+ as TEA. Genes encoding As5+ respiratory reductase (arr A), As3+ oxidase (aioB), and As3+ efflux systems (ars B, acr3) were detected. All these As homeostasis genes showed their close phylogenetic lineages to Bacillus spp. Reduction in cell size following As exposure exhibited the strain's morphological response to toxic As, while the formation of As-rich electron opaque dots as evident from SEM-EDX possibly indicated a sequestration based As resistance strategy of strain IIIJ3–1. Conclusion: This is the first report on molecular, taxonomic, and ecophysiological characterization of a highly As resistant, As3+ oxidizing, and dissimilatory As5+ reducing Bacillus sp. IIIJ3–1 from As contaminated sites of Brahmaputra river basin. The strain's ability to resist and transform As along with its capability to sequester As within the cells demonstrate its potential in designing bioremediation strategies for As contaminated groundwater and other ecosystems. Four closely related facultative anaerobe, moderately thermophilic, Gram positive rods (JS1T, JS5, JS11, and JS15) were isolated from sediment samples from a hot spring at Suryakund, Jharkhand, India. Colonies were pale yellow, rough surface with uneven edges on TSA after 72 h incubation. Heterotrophic growth was observed at 40-60°C and pH 5.5-11.5; optimum growth occurred at 55°C and pH 7.5. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed the strains belong to genus Anoxybacillus. DNA-DNA homology values among strains were above 70% and showed distinct ERIC and REP PCR profile. On the basis of morphology and biochemical characteristics, strain JS1T was studied further. Strain JS1T showed 99.30% sequence similarity with A. flavithermus subsp. yunnanensis, 99.23% with A. mongoliensis, 99.16% with A. eryuanensis, 98.74% with A. flavithermus subsp. flavithermus, 98.54% with A. tengchongensis, 98.51% with A. pushchinoensis, 97.91% with A. thermarum, 97.82% with A. kaynarcensis, 97.77% with A. ayderensis and A. kamchatkensis, 97.63% with A. salavatliensis, 97.55% with A. kestanbolensis, 97.48% with A. contaminans, 97.27% with A. gonensis and 97.17% with A. voinovskiensis. In 16S rRNA secondary structure based phylogenetic comparison, strain JS1T was clustered with Anoxybacillus eryuanensis, A. mongoliensis, and A. flavithermus subsp. yunnanensis and showed 15 species specific base substitutions with maximum variability in helix 6. Moreover, DNA-DNA relatedness between JS1T and the closely related type strains were well below 70%. The DNA G+C content was 42.1 mol%. The major fatty acids were C15:0 iso, C16:0 iso and C17:0iso. The polar lipids were a phosphatidylgylycerol, a diphosphatidylglycerol, a phosphatidylethnolamine, a phosphatidylcholine, a phosphatidyl monomethylethanolamine and four unknown lipids. Based on polyphasic approach, strain JS1T represent a novel species of the genus Anoxybacillus for which Anoxybacillus suryakundensis sp. nov. is proposed.
