BACKGROUND: Pterygium is a commonly occurring ocular pathology, characterized by a benign proliferation of conjunctiva which extends onto the corneal surface. Abnormal tear film and meibomian gland (MG) dysfunction have been linked to pterygium development. AIMS: This study was done to evaluate the changes taking place in the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) score and other tear film parameters with MG parameters in patients of primary pterygium as well as evaluation of the relation between them In pterygium. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: This was a case-control study, done in a tertiary care hospital in North India. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients presenting to the ophthalmology outpatient department with a diagnosis of pterygium were enrolled in the pterygium study group along with their gender- and age-matched controls. Both groups were evaluated for OSDI score and other tear films and MG parameters were compared. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED: The results were analyzed using SPSS version 24.0. A P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: The OSDI score was significant among the study groups with a P= 0.006 and the MG parameters of MG expression score, lid margin abnormality, and meiboscore were also significant with a P= 0.002, 0.002, and < 0.01, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: There is a positive association between pterygium, tear film abnormality, and MG disease (MGD). A strong association was also established between MGD and dry eye. Purpose: To evaluate and analyze the outcomes of sutureless and glue-free limbal-conjunctival autografting in cases of primary as well as recurrent pterygium.Methods: This prospective interventional study was carried out between February 2019 and February 2020 at a tertiary care hospital in North India. A.total of 70 patients with pterygium underwent sutureless and glue-free limbal-conjunctival autograft. The patients were divided into two groups: group 1 patients with primary pterygium (n = 45), group 2 patients with recurrent pterygium (n = 25). The patients were followed up till 12 months postoperatively.Results: The mean age of the patients in group 1 and group 2 was 37.04 ± 8.69 years and 32.52 ± 6.49 years, respectively (P = 0.04). Postoperatively, no recurrence was recorded in group 1. Recurrence was noticed in two patients (8%) of group 2. The BCVA changed from 78.73 ± 9.86 letters to 80.15 ± 7.29 letters (P = 0.45) and from 79.6 ± 6.44 letters to 79.8 ± 5.86 letters (P = 0.45) in group 1 and group 2, respectively. Graft edema was found in seven (15.55%) cases of group 1 and four (16%) cases of group 2. Graft retraction was found in two (4.44%) cases of group 1 and three (12%) cases of group 2.Conclusion: Sutureless and a glue-free limbal-conjunctival autograft is a safe and effective treatment option for primary as well as recurrent pterygium. Purpose: Analysis of complication profile after pterygium excision, in primary and recurrent pterygia.Methods: Retrospective analysis of all the patients who had undergone pterygium excision in a tertiary center in South India from 2010 to 2018 was analyzed. A total of 2356 eyes in 2028 patients were included in the study. Patients who had undergone conjunctival autografting for primary pterygium, conjunctival limbal autografting for recurrent pterygium, vertical split conjunctival autografting for double head pterygium were included in the study. In all the surgical procedures fibrin glue was used for fixation of the autograft. The follow-up period ranged from 6 months to 75 months, with an average of 17 months. Patients with less than 6 months of follow-up were excluded from the study.Results: The following postoperative complications were noted, Sub-conjunctival hemorrhage in 912 eyes (38.7%), edema of the graft in 522 cases (22.15%), graft loss in 22 cases (0.93%), graft retraction in 692 cases (29.37%) and sliding of the graft was seen in 9 cases (0.38%). Granuloma was seen in 4 cases (0.16%) at the host site and 5 cases (0.21%) at the donor site. Recurrence was seen in 34 patients (1.44%). Other severe complications like corneal melt were seen in only 1 case (0.04%) who was operated on for recurrent pterygium. In comparison between primary and recurrent pterygia; subconjunctival hemorrhage, edema of the graft, graft loss, and recurrence was significantly (P < 0.05%) higher in recurrent pterygia.Conclusion: Various complications can occur post pterygium surgery as listed above. Selecting a proper procedure for a particular type of pterygium with a proper graft fixation technique will improve the outcome with minimal complications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Aims: Chhattisgarh is an endemic region for rhinosporidiosis infection in Central India. This high prevalence can be explained by suitable hot tropical environment as well as social practice of common bathing of public with animals outdoor, mainly in ponds and river. There are more than 200 ponds in and around Bilaspur district, mainly in Ratanpur region. However, due to limited literature describing rhinosporidiosis from this part of India, it remains neglected and still not recognized as a serious health-care issue and any definite government or private measures/initiatives are not taken to counter this problem. Materials and Methods: It is a retrospective demographic study analyzing 113 consecutive biopsies received from different clinical departments in a tertiary care center with a histological diagnosis of rhinosporidiosis over a period of 7 years from January 2011 to December 2017. Results: Most of the patients presented in the otorhinolaryngology (86.7%) department, followed by ophthalmology (10.6%). The mean age of the patients was 23.4 years, with a range of 3–70 years. A male-to-female ratio of about 3:2 was noted. Nasal cavity was the most common site of involvement (90/113), followed by conjunctiva (7/113), nasal cavity with oropharynx (6/113), and eyelid (3/113). Patients' complaints showed a varying range from nasal block, nasal mass, bleeding, bleed on touch, difficulty in breathing, and conjunctival mass. Two of the cases presented as recurrent rhinosporidiosis. Conclusion: Rhinosporidiosis is endemic and possesses a great health-care burden in Chhattisgarh. The socioeconomic status, outdoor bathing, and cultural practice in rural areas are the major factors contributing to newer cases. An urgent government initiative to decontaminate public water bodies and public health education through health-care workers and nongovernment organizations is the need of the hour to curtail the incidence of rhinosporidiosis. Rhinosporidiosis, a chronic granulomatous disease, is caused by Rhinosporidium seeberi. It is an endosporulating microorganism causing polypoidal ocular mass. A clinician needs to have high degree of suspicion for oculosporidiosis, as it is more common in nasal cavity and other respiratory passage as compared to ocular lesion. The authors intend to increase awareness among ophthalmologists through this case series. It was intended to evaluate profile, clinical presentation and recurrence rate of ocular rhinosporidiosis in a tertiary care setting in Eastern India. The present case series is about 15 patients diagnosed with rhinosporidiosis, that was reported within one year. Age range was 6-50 years, with male:female was 9:6. All patients underwent total excision with around 2 mm lesion free margin and electrocautery of base. Postoperatively, antibiotic and lubricant eye drops were given, a follow-up schedule was day 1, 7, 30, six months and one year. Majority of the patients showed involvement of lower tarsal conjunctiva (eight), followed by upper (four), then bulbar conjunctiva (one), lower lid (one), and lacrimal sac (one). All patients recovered completely postoperatively. At one year follow-up no patient had any recurrence. Ocular rhinosporidiosis may have diverse presentation from chalazion, papilloma, keratoconjunctivitis etc. This disease is often missed because of poor pathological back up at many centres. Purpose. To compare the outcomes of trabeculectomy using two different routes of bevacizumab administration as an adjunct in patients with primary open angle glaucoma. Methods. Prospective, randomized, masked trial that included 180 eyes of 180 patients of documented primary open angle glaucoma were eligible for surgery. Patients were randomized to receive either a single intraoperative dose of subconjunctival bevacizumab (1.25 mg, Group I) or topical bevacizumab (5 mg/ml) for 30 days (Group II). One eye was randomly selected, if both were eligible for surgery. All patients underwent a complete ocular and systemic examination. Bleb morphology was examined and scored as per Moorfields system (MBGS) at 1, 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months postoperatively. Visual field, fundus photography, and disc analysis were performed. Outcome measures (at one year) included (1) comparison of bleb morphology in both groups, (2) proportion of patients achieving surgical success, and (3) side effects of treatment. Results. The groups did not differ with respect to age, sex, and crystalline lens status. Group II patients had significantly lower vascularity scores for central (P = 0.042) and peripheral bleb areas (P = 0.023) and peripheral nonbleb area (P = 0.03). A significantly larger proportion of Group II (n = 88) patients achieved average vascular scores of less than 2.5 (P = 0.0056 , Fisher's test) than Group I (n = 85). The groups did not differ in terms of surgical success (96% vs. 94%; P = 0.54). No major complications were noted in either group. Conclusion. Purpose: To describe the clinical features, treatment, and outcomes of conjunctival melanoma in Asian Indians. Methods: Retrospective study of 42 patients. Results: The mean age at presentation of conjunctival melanoma was 43 years (median, 45 years; range, 9-78 years). There were 20 (48%) males and 22 (52%) females. Nineteen patients (45%) had a known history of a preexisting pigmented conjunctival lesion. Bulbar conjunctiva (n = 28; 67%) was the most common tumor epicenter, and medial ocular surface quadrant (n = 15; 36%) was more commonly involved. The mean tumor basal diameter was 12 mm (median, 10 mm; range, 4-30 mm), and the mean tumor thickness was 4 mm (median, 2 mm; range, 1-30 mm). Majority of the patients had a pigmented tumor (n = 33; 79%). The tumors arose de novo (n = 17, 41%) or were associated with conjunctival nevus (n = 9; 21%) or primary acquired melanosis (n = 16, 38%). Wide excisional biopsy, adjunctive cryotherapy, and amniotic membrane grafting were performed in 27 (71%) patients, 11 (29%) underwent orbital exenteration, and 4 were lost to follow-up prior to definitive treatment. Over a mean follow-up period of 24 months (median, 9 months; range, <1 to 136 months), four (11%) patients had tumor recurrence, seven (18%) had locoregional lymph node metastasis, and four (11%) developed systemic metastasis and died due to metastatic disease. Objectives: To report the microbiological spectrum of conjunctival flora and prevalence of biofilm-forming Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in conjunctival flora in chronic dacryocystitis.Design: Prospective, case-control study.Methods: We included patients with unilateral chronic dacryocystitis, and their unaffected eyes as control. Microbiological profile and antibiotic susceptibility of the isolates was determined by standard microbiological procedures. S. aureus isolates were further evaluated for Methicillin resistance by Oxacillin resistance screening agar method and mecA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and for biofilm synthesis by Congo red agar method, Microtitre plate (MTP) assay, and ica A and ica D PCR.Results: We found 95 patients with unilateral chronic dacryocystitis. Aerobic Gram-positive isolates (74.2%, n = 72) were more than Gram-negative (25.7%, n = 25) or anaerobic isolates (20.5%, n = 25). S. aureus was most common (46.4%, n = 45), followed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (10.3%, n = 10). Gram-positive isolates showed highest sensitivity to Linezolid (100%) and higher generation fluoroquinolones. Gram-negative isolates showed good sensitivity (>90%) to all tested antibiotics. S. aureus isolates showed MRSA prevalence as 93.5% and 96.9% by Oxacillin resistance screening agar method and mecA PCR, respectively. Biofilm formation was found in 71.8% MRSA isolates by MTP assay and 58.1% MRSA isolates were resistant to ≥3 classes of antibiotics.Conclusions: Gram-positive organisms, specifically S. aureus, are the major etiological agent in chronic dacryocystitis. Introduction: Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) spread mainly through respiratory droplets and contact routes. Long-term use of spectacles may prevent repeated touching and rubbing of the eyes. Aim: To know the association between infection with SARSCoV-2 and wearing of spectacles. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in which 304 patients of Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) were selected. Their spectacles wearing behaviour were assessed through a questionnaire. Spectacles wearing behaviour of general population were obtained from older studies (for comparison). Risk of COVID-19 was calculated in long-term spectacles wearers as well as in persons not using spectacles. Chi-Square test was used for statistical analysis. Results: In this study, total 58 patients showed the behaviour of using spectacles continuously during day time and always on outdoor activities. The risk of COVID-19 was found 0.48 in spectacles wearing population as compared to 1.35 in population not using spectacles. The calculated Risk Ratio (RR) was 0.36. It indicates that the risk of COVID-19 was 2-3 times less in spectacles wearing population than the population not using spectacles. The protective effectiveness of the spectacles was found statistically significant (p-value=0.00113). Conclusion: The present study showed that the risk of COVID-19 was about 2-3 times less in spectacles wearing population than the population not wearing those. Objective: Diabetic retinopathy is a serious complication of diabetes mellitus that may lead to vision loss. Retinal problems are more likely to occur as the illness advances. Micro- and macro-vascular angiopathy is both linked to diabetes mellitus. Examining the impact of diabetes on blood vessels is one approach to understanding the disease's outward symptoms. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the morphology and breadth of conjunctival vessels in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus and to establish a correlation between these alterations and clinical retinal changes., Patients and Methods: A case-control study was conducted in the Department of Ophthalmology, KIMS, Koppal, Karnataka. The study included diabetic patients who voluntarily participated and were assessed at the Ophthalmology Outpatient Department (OPD). The general and ophthalmic history was taken for both cases and control. The best corrected visual acuity was estimated. Each subject, including cases and controls, had a general and ophthalmic history recorded. The anterior segment was evaluated with a slit lamp. After completing the clinical examination, the subjects underwent a conjunctival vessel imaging study using the slit lamp. The imaging included the study of conjunctival vessel morphology using ImageNet., Results: Both the test and control groups are comparable in terms of age and gender. The severity of diabetic retinopathy was shown to correlate with the conjunctival width range. Mild diabetic retinopathy is characterized by a conjunctival width of 30-34 microns (mean: 34.9), moderate diabetic retinopathy by 35-39 microns (mean: 37.3), severe diabetic retinopathy by 40-44 microns (mean: 42.4), and proliferative diabetic retinopathy by 50-54 microns (mean: 45.6)., Conclusions: Diabetes mellitus patients have larger conjunctival arteries as the disease becomes more severe. Dilated and tortuous conjunctival arteries are visible indicators that correlate with worsening diabetic retinopathy. This could be used for screening to ensure timely referral.

Purpose: Ophthalmic complications in diabetes such as retinopathy, cataract, and infections have been extensively studied. Recently, attention has been drawn toward ocular surface changes in diabetes mellitus (DM). This study has been carried out to investigate the tear film and ocular surface abnormalities in type II DM patients.Materials and Methods: A total of 83 participants (130 eyes) were enrolled: 53 diabetics (80 eyes) and 30 healthy controls (50 eyes). Of the 53 diabetics, 24 patients (42 eyes) had some diabetic retinopathy. The tear film and ocular surface were evaluated using Schirmer test, tear film break-up time (TBUT), keratoepitheliopathy score (KES), Rose Bengal Staining (RBS) test, and conjunctival impression cytology.Results: When compared with the healthy controls, diabetics showed significantly reduced Schirmer, TBUT measurements and the higher grades of KES and RBS test (P < 0.001). Impression cytology analysis showed goblet cell loss and conjunctival squamous metaplasia in diabetics.Conclusion: Tear film abnormality is a significant feature of diabetic ocular surface diseases. These abnormalities are likely on account of poor quality and function of tears, combined with the subnormal ocular surface. Therefore, all diabetic patients especially those with evidence of retinopathy changes should undergo routine early examination and follow-up of tear function and ocular surface parameters. Purpose: To determine the trends in the microbial spectrum and antibacterial susceptibility patterns of non-viral conjunctivitis over 16 years., Methods: Microbiology data were reviewed from 2006-2021 for all the patients with clinically and culture-proven infectious conjunctivitis. Conjunctival swabs and/or conjunctival scrapings were collected for microbiological workup, and the demographic and antibiotic susceptibility data were extracted from the EMR (Electronic Medical Record). For statistical analysis, χ 2 -test was performed., Results: Of the 1711 patients, 814 (47.57%) were culture positive and 897 (52.43%) were culture negative. Of the total culture-proven conjunctivitis cases, 775/814 (95.20%) were bacteria, and 39/814 (4.80%) were fungi. Among these bacterial isolates, 75.74% were gram-positive bacteria, while 24.26% were gram negative. The predominant gram-positive pathogens isolated were S. epidermidis (16.7%), S. aureus (17.9%) (p < 0.05), and S. pneumoniae (18.2%), while Haemophilus spp. (36.2%) (p < 0.05) was the most often isolated gram-negative bacteria (36.2%), and Aspergillus spp. was the most commonly isolated fungus (50%). The susceptibility of gram-positive bacteria to cefazoline increased from 90.46 to 98% (p = 0.01), whereas the susceptibility for gatifloxacin decreased in both gram-positive (81-41%; p < 0.0001) and gram-negative bacteria (73-58%; p = 0.02)., Conclusions: Increasing resistance of ocular isolates to mainstay antibiotics is a concern, and this data can assist healthcare practitioners in making informed choices regarding the treatment of ocular infections with ophthalmic antibiotics., (© 2023. Purpose: The purpose was to study the efficacy of interferon alpha 2b (INF α2b) in the treatment of ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) and analyze its cost-effectiveness in India.Study Design: This was a retrospective study of thirty patients with OSSN treated with topical INF α2b (1 MIU/cc) ± perilesional INF α2b (5 MIU/cc).Results: The tumor involved cornea (n = 9, 30%), conjunctivo-limbal-corneal surface (n = 19, 63%), or bulbar conjunctiva (n = 2, 7%). The mean basal dimension of the tumor was 16 mm. The tumors belonged to Tis (n = 6, 20%) or T3 (n = 24, 80%) based on the American Joint Committee Classification, 7th edition. In the six patients with Tis, three cycles of topical INF α2b were used for immunoprevention. In the remaining 24 patients, INF α2b was advised for immunoreduction, but served as immunotherapy with 100% tumor regression in 22 (92%) cases, and resulted in 95% immunoreduction in 2 (6%) cases. Complete tumor regression by immunotherapy (n = 22) was achieved with a mean number of three topical INF α2b cycles and two perilesional injections. All these 22 patients received three additional topical INF α2b cycles after complete tumor regression. For immunoreduction (n = 2), both patients received six cycles of topical INF α2b which was three perilesional INF α2b injections. The mean total treatment cost per patient with INF α2b was INR 9164 ($US 137). Based on maximum basal diameter of tumor at presentation, the mean total treatment cost per patient with INF α2b was INR 4866 ($US 73) for eyes with microscopic evidence of tumor residue (n = 6), INR 9607 ($US 143) for tumors ≤10 mm (n = 13), and INR 10,985 ($US 164) for tumors >10 mm (n = 11), with two patients needing additional surgical excision for complete tumor control.Conclusion: INF α2b can be used for immunoreduction, immunotherapy, or immunoprevention of OSSN. Background: Pterygium is an ocular surface disorder with prevalence rates ranges from 0.3% to 29% in different parts of the world. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has been detected in increased amounts in pterygium epithelium, compared with normal conjunctiva. Bevacizumab is a recombinant, humanized anti-VEGF antibody suggested as a possible adjunctive therapy for pterygium excision that appears to have a role in prevention of recurrence. We conducted this study to evaluate the role of subconjunctival bevacizumab in primary pterygium surgery in Indian patients.Methods: In this randomized prospective clinical study, the patients were randomized into two groups of 30 patients each. Study group received 1.25 mg/0.05 ml subconjunctival bevacizumab 1 week before pterygium surgery with conjunctival autograft. Control group received 1.25 mg (0.05 ml) subconjunctival normal saline 1 week prior to pterygium surgery with conjunctival autograft. Patients were followed up at day 1, day 7, 1 month and 3 months. The main outcome measures were morphology of pterygium after injection, intra-operative ease, recurrence of pterygia, and any complications.Results: After giving bevacizumab, there was statistically significant improvement in grade, color intensity, size of pterygium, and symptoms of patients. Intra-operatively, less bleeding was observed by the surgeon. No statistically significant difference regarding reduction in astigmatism, improvement of visual acuity, and complications were observed in two groups. Recurrence was noted in five patients (8.33%) in total study population at the end of 3 months. It was present in two patients (6.67%) in Group A and three patients (10%) in Group B.Conclusion: Single preoperative administration of subconjunctival injection bevacizumab given 1 week before the pterygium excision with conjunctival autograft decreases the vascularity of newly formed blood vessels, hence may decrease recurrence rate though not in our study. Aim: To analyze surgical outcome of pterygium excision with conjunctival autografting in pediatric population ≤16 years. Settings and Design: Retrospective case series. Materials and Methods: A case sheet review of 145 patients (167 eyes) aged ≤16 years consecutively presented with pterygium from April 2008 to August 2014 in the single center was done. Twenty-six eyes of 25 children who underwent pterygium excision with conjunctival autograft were analyzed. Different techniques used to secure conjunctival autograft in a position were multiple interrupted 8-0 vicryl sutures, single 8-0 vicryl suture in the center of graft and sutureless glue free. Outcome measures were a failure of surgery and recurrence. Results: Of the total 167 eyes, 26 eyes of 25 children, mean age 13.07 ± 3.08 years (range 7-16 years) were managed surgically with pterygium excision and conjunctival autograft. The rest of the patients were managed conservatively. In 18 eyes, the graft was secured with multiple sutures, in 6 eyes with a single suture, whereas in 2 eyes, sutureless glue-free graft opposition was done. Mean follow-up was 8.03 months. No case of graft retraction, graft dehiscence or graft displacement was found. Recurrence occurred in 6 eyes and managed surgically. Conclusions: Occurrence of pterygium is not uncommon in the pediatric population. A single suture or sutureless glue-free technique may be good alternative for securing conjunctival autograft after pterygium excision in children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Objectives: Palmar creases may become as pale as the surrounding skin in severe anemia. However, its sensitivity for assessing severe anemia is questionable, especially in Indian perspective. The study was conducted to evaluate the value of palmar creases in detecting severe anemia. Materials and Methods: Patients with laboratory confirmed anemia were assessed for pallor of palmar creases without information of patient's hemoglobin (Hb) value to the observer. Sensitivity and specificity of palmar creases pallor were assessed for severe anemia. Role of clinical signs such as severe pallor of conjunctiva, tongue and nail-beds and pulmonary ejection systolic murmur were also assessed for predicting severe anemia. Results: Of 200 patients, 50 had severe anemia (Hb <7 g/dL). Only six patients with Hb <7 g/dL were found to have creases looking similar pale to surrounding skin. Average Hb level of them was 4.05 ± 0.82 g/dL. No patients with Hb =7 g/dL had pale palmar creases. In severely anemic patients, its sensitivity is only 12%, but specificity is 100%, and positive likelihood ratio is >1200. Severe pallor of conjunctiva, tongue and nail-beds and pulmonary ejection systolic murmur were more sensitive, but specificity of them was less for severe anemia. Conclusions: Color of palmar creases is a poorly sensitive indicator of the severe anemia especially in Indians due to the pigmentation of creases. Hence, the absence of palmar crease pallor is not likely to be of use in ruling out severe anemia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The conjunctiva is a thin and flexible mucus membrane that provides a protective barrier to the eye. Very few histopathologic studies have been conducted on conjunctival biopsies in eastern India. Materials and Methods: 120 conjunctival biopsies from 117 patients (76 males, 41 females) received during 8 years (January 2003-December 2010) were included in this study. Results: Histologic diagnoses were: degenerative lesions in 38 cases (31.66%), benign epithelial lesions in 23 cases (19.16%), premalignant and malignant epithelial lesions in 27 cases (22.5%), melanocytic lesions in 10 cases (8.33%), lymphoid in 7 cases (5.83%), and miscellaneous in 15 cases (12.5%). Conclusion: Squamous papilloma was the commonest benign tumor, whereas the commonest malignant tumor was squamous cell carcinoma. Purpose: To describe the clinical features, histopathology, treatment, and outcomes of patients with ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) presenting to a referral centre in India., Methods: Retrospective interventional study., Results: Of 438 patients, the mean age at presentation was 49 years. Human immunodeficiency virus infection was noted in 72 (16%), xeroderma pigmentosum in 22 (5%), hepatitis B virus infection in 14 (3%), and systemic cancer in 8 (2%) patients. Tumor pigmentation was noted in 243 (54%) tumors with a mean percentage of tumor pigmentation of 44% (median, 40%; range, 1 to 100%). Intraocular tumor extension was noted in 12 (3%), and orbital tumor extension in 16 (4%) eyes. Of the 381 treated lesions, excisional biopsy (n = 247; 65%) was the most common treatment modality. Of the 311 lesions with histopathology diagnosis of OSSN, invasive squamous cell carcinoma (n = 92; 30%) was the most common. Over a mean follow-up period of 11 months (median, 5 months; range, 1 to 108 months) in 368 patients, tumor recurrence was noted in 16 (4%) eyes, globe salvage was achieved in 341 (90%) eyes, vision salvage in 338 (89%) eyes, regional lymph node metastasis occurred in 9 (2%), and metastasis-related death in 9 (2%) patients., Conclusion: Pigmented OSSN is common in Asian Indian population. Aims: To describe the clinical profile of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) in patients presenting to a multitier ophthalmology hospital network in India., Methods: This retrospective hospital-based study included 2 408 819 patients presenting between August 2010 and February 2020. Patients with a clinical diagnosis of EKC in at least one eye with a recent onset (≤1 week) were included as cases. The data were collected using the eyeSmart electronic medical record system., Results: Overall, 21 196 (0.9%) new patients were diagnosed with EKC, of which 19 203 (90.6%) patients reported a recent onset (≤1 week) and were included for analysis. The median age was 32 (IQR: 22-45) years and adults (84.5%) were commonly affected. Most of the patients were male (62.1%) and unilateral (53.4%) affliction was commoner. The most common presenting symptom was redness (63.7%), followed by watering (42.1%). Preauricular lymphadenopathy or tenderness was documented in 1406 (7.3%) cases at presentation. A minority of the eyes had visual impairment worse than 20/200 (7.8%) due to associated ocular comorbidities. The involvement of the cornea was seen in 7338 (38.2%) patients and corneal signs included subepithelial infiltrates (26.3%), epithelial defect (1.4%), corneal oedema (0.9%) and filaments (0.4%). Of the patients who had corneal involvement, 496 (2.6%) patients had a chronic course beyond 1 month of which 105 (0.5%) had a course beyond 1 year., Conclusion: EKC is a self-limiting condition that is commonly unilateral and predominantly affects males. Ophthalmomyiasis is the infestation of human eye by the larvae of certain flies. Sheep botfly commonly manifests as Ophthalmomyiasis externa when there is conjunctival involvement or rarely as Opthalmomyiasis interna when there is larval penetration into the eyeball. It appears to be more common than what has been indicated by previously published reports. We present a report of seven cases of Ophthalmomyiasis by Oestrus ovis, from central India who presented with features of conjunctivitis varying between mild to severe. The larvae were seen in bulbar and palpebral conjunctiva and also entangled in lashes with discharge. Since the larvae are photophobic, it is prudent to look for them in the fornices and also in discharge. Prompt removal of the larvae from the conjunctiva helps in relieving the symptoms and also prevents serious complications. Taxonomic identification of the species is important to estimate the risk of globe penetration by the larvae. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Pterygium is a fibrous growth seen in bulber conjunctiva. It is a non malignant growth which may cause visual impairment. Material and Methods: Pterygium study was done on rural population in out patient department of NIMS Hospital and medical college, Jaipur, Rajasthan, India. Two hundred patients with 300 eyes which had Pterygium who attended the Eye OPD during 01/06/2011 to 01/03/2012 were taken for study. A detailed history, Visual Acuity, Refractive Status, Size of Pterygium and duration of the work which was done outdoors were recorded. All other physical illness were ruled out. The aim of the study is to find the incidence of Pterygium, male/female ratio, Comparison of size of Pterygium with duration of working hours in the outfield. Conclusion: The maximum number of patients of pterygium were seen in the age group 20-60years and there is no difference in male/female ratio. Purpose: To evaluate the prevalence of pterygia and associated factors in a rural population in a mostly undeveloped agrarian region. Methods: The Central India Eye and Medical Study is a population-based study performed in a rural region of Central India. The study comprised 4711 subjects (aged 30+ years). A detailed ophthalmic and medical examination was performed. A pterygium was diagnosed during the slit lamp examination and confirmed on corneal photographs. It was defined as a fleshy fibrovascular growth, crossing the limbus and typically seen on the nasal, and sometimes temporal, conjunctiva. Results: A pterygium was detected in 798 eyes (prevalence rate: 8.47±0.29%) of 608 (12.91±0.49%) subjects. Bilateral pterygia were present in 190 subjects (4.0% of study population). Pterygia prevalence increased from 6.7±0.8% in the age group 30-39 years, to 13.5±1.2% in the age group 50-59 years, to 25.3±2.1% in the age group 70-79 years. Prevalence of pterygia was associated with older age (P<0.001; regression coefficient B: 0.02; odds ratio (OR): 1.02; 95%CI: 1.01, 1.03), male gender (P<0.001;B:-0.73;OR: .48;95%CI:0.39,0.61), lower level of education (P<0.001;B:-0.30;OR:0.74;95%CI:0.69,0.80), lower body height (P=0.001;B:-0.02;OR:0.98;95%CI:0.97,0.99), and higher cylindrical refractive error (P<0.001;B:0.23;OR:1.26;95%CI:1.18,1.34). If the education level was dropped, the number of hours spent with vigorous activity outdoors (P=0.001;B:0.001;OR:1.001;95%CI:1.000,1.0001) was significantly associated with the prevalence of pterygia, in addition to older age (P<0.001;B:0.03;OR:1.03;95%CI:1.03,1.04), male gender (P<0.001;B:-0.49;OR:0.62;95%CI:0.49,0.77), lower body height (P=0.005;B:-0.02;OR:0.98;95%CI:0.97,0.99), and higher cylindrical refractive error (P<0.001;B:0.23;OR:1.25;95%CI:1.18,1.34). Conclusions: Pterygium prevalence in rural Central India is about 13% among adult Indians aged 30+ years. Older age, male gender, lower educational level, lower body height and more time spent outdoors with vigorous work were associated factors. Since the living conditions in the study location were mostly untouched by modern developments, the results may show the prevalence and associations of pterygia without major medical or technologic influences.
