Objectives: Bibliometric analysis is one of the most widely used tools to quantify the research prolificacy in a specific area of knowledge. This paper aims to provide a list of the top 100 cited articles published between 2010 and 2021 on dental fluorosis to offer an up-to-date quantitative-qualitative analysis of publications. Methods: The Scopus database was reviewed with the term "dental fluorosis" in the title, abstract, and keywords to retrieve lists of the 100 most-cited articles on 16 December 2021. The number of citations, authors, publication year, country, and institution of origin were evaluated. A graphical illustration of keywords, co-authors, and countries was created using VOSviewer. Results: The number of citations of the 100 articles varied from 654 to 42. All the studies were published in English and 62% were published in journals in the first quartile. The articles were published in 62 different journals, with the most popular publication being the Journal of the American Dentistry and Science of The Total Environment (n=5). The papers originated from 40 countries, with India (n=26) accounting for the largest number. The most prolific authors were A. M. Glenny and H.V. Worthington (n=5), and the institution was Manchester University (n=8). The majority of articles were on Environmental Science (n=39), followed by Dentistry and Medicine (n=26). Conclusions: The present citation analysis provides insights into the current publications in dental fluorosis and will help researchers interested in this topic by saving considerable effort and time in finding appropriate article referrals. This study employs bibliometric analysis to assess knowledge development and current trends in five vital fields for India's progress: Demography, Economy, Environment, Defense, and Science and Technology (DEEDST). Using a strategic approach involving keywords and databases, data was extracted from Web of Science's "Social Science Citation Index" on January 30, 2023, within a ten-year period (2013–2022), focusing on publications with India as the country. The study also utilized various boolean operators to enhance the search. Key metrics such as total citations, impact factors, and author affiliations were gathered, enriching the research's value for professionals and researchers in these fields. Notably, the 'Economy' keyword yielded the most publications (625), followed by 'Environment' (469), 'Defense' (28), 'Science and Technology' (18), and 'Demography' (9). Of the publications, 984 were articles, and 72 were review articles. Indian surgeons have a substantial workload. But how much of it do we document and publish thus facilitating evidence-based practice? We undertook to document the contribution of Indian authors to the world literature in general surgery and to elicit the view of Indian surgeons regarding scientific publications. We carried out a search of articles in general surgical journals, published by Indian authors working in India. The journals chosen were those with an impact factor of more than 2. In addition, the Indian Journal of Surgery, with an impact factor of 0.55, was included as it is our flagship journal. The period of study was between January 2014 and April 2020. Additionally, a survey was carried out among the members of the Karnataka State Chapter of the Association of Surgeons of India. The survey was designed to elicit responses from surgeons regarding their attitude towards surgical publications. In American Journal of Surgery, British Journal of Surgery and Annals of Surgery only one original publication each was found. In Canadian Journal of Surgery and Journal of American Medical Association Surgery there were no publications in the study period. Surgeons put forth several reasons for this lack of publication culture—the main ones being lack of motivation, lack of data and lack of training to write. It is clear that Indian authors contributed to a minuscule number of papers in scientific surgical journals. The culture of publication must be inculcated from an early stage of surgical training. Background: Despite exponential growth in Indian research, Indian journals have low impact factors. A previous study by one of the authors (CA) of this paper showed that articles published in the Indian Journal of Psychiatry (IJP) under-referenced previously published relevant papers in the same journal. Based on this, we decided to investigate the citation characteristics of contemporary scientific articles published in the Indian Journal of Psychological Medicine (IJPM). Methods: The citation characteristics of scientific articles published in 2018 (Vol 40, issues 1–6) in the IJPM were examined to determine how well the authors cited relevant articles published during the past ten years in the IJPM and the IJP. Results: There were 145 and 142 citation-worthy articles in the IJPM and the IJP, respectively; of these, 85.5% and 65.5%, respectively, had not been cited. Conclusions: Authors publishing in the IJPM under-reference previous relevant research published in the IJPM and IJP. This suggests unawareness of, deliberate disregard of, or even disdain for prior Indian research in the field. Additionally, if Indian researchers do not cite previous Indian research in the field published in Indian journals, the citation metrics of Indian journals will not grow. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The recent years saw the widespread mushrooming of publishing agencies in India. Along with them a lot of predatory journals too were created. This is a serious problem as predatory journals gravely undermine honest, ethics, and the truth value of research. However, scholars still fail to understand the predatory nature and the reasons for this large scale mushrooming. The article analyses the causes that contribute to the growth of hoax publications both from the publication as well as the author's side. The study shows money as the major driving factor while the insistence of quantity more than quality by the higher education authorities as an aiding impetus. The current trend of conducting research and publishing the same to fulfill the academic or professional requirements can jeopardise what research actually means in health sciences. Rather than highlighting how many publications one can have, or showcase the expertise as a researcher, research can inform knowledge gaps and address the same in a replicable and scientific manner. More importantly, for low- and middle- income countries like India, research can be a powerful tool to assess healthcare problems at the primary care and develop innovative solutions to strengthen health systems at the grass root level. It can be argued that, enriching research portfolio for an individual is a misleading approach whereas research has much more to offer to the society at large. In the context of in primary care, academic and implementation research is important for several distinct reasons. The practice-based research can inform better practice through communicating the concerns or findings from research with key stakeholders of primary care. If the primary care practitioners are equipped with fundamental research skills, it may help them to become better critics and evidence-based practitioners. Publishing research findings in a good scientific journal is not an easy job. A lot of time and resources are often required from the submission process to publication. There are many obstacles for publishing a research, some are inherent some are man-made. In this article we describe our experiences about the bottlenecks that we have faced while conducting medical research and we have also prescribed some possible solutions which can help to the researchers in future while conducting medical research. The present study throws light on the scholarly communication of three leading countries in the field of pharmaceutical research as reflected in SCOPUS database during 1998-2017. In terms of publication output, United States with two leading Asian countries, China and India leads with 40.54 per cent share of the global research publication share in pharmaceutical sciences. The global outcome of scholarly communication in the field of pharmaceutical research is 1395221. The study mainly focuses both on qualitative and quantitative research growth of United States, China and India in terms of output of scholarly communication, citation impact, relative research effort, common sources used for publications and research collaboration. The growth pattern of three leading countries is highly chaotic. The relative research effort of India and China increased during 2008-2017 while in United States, it was decreased. Bioorganic and Medicinal Chemistry, Tetrahedron Letters and Tetrahedron are the common source of communication in these three countries. China and India together have more than one third of the world population and are two emerging economic giants of the developing world now experiencing rapid economic growth, urbanization, and motorization. The urban transportation sector is a major source of carbon dioxide (CO) emissions in China and India. The goal of this study is to analyze the characteristics and factors of CO emissions produced by commuters in Chinese and Indian cities and thus to identify strategies for reducing transportation CO emissions and mitigating global climate change. Xi'an in China and Bangalore in India were chosen as two case study cities for their representativeness of major cities in China and India. The trends of CO emissions produced by major traffic modes (electric motors, buses, and cars) in major cities of China and India were predicted and analyzed. The spatial distributions of CO emissions produced by commuters in both cities were assessed using spatial analysis module in ArcGIS (Geographic Information System) software. Tobit models were then developed to investigate the impact factors of the emissions. The study has several findings. Firstly, in both cities, the increase of vehicle occupancy could reduce commuting CO emissions by 20 to 50 % or conversely, if vehicle occupancy reduces, an increase by 33.33 to 66.67 %. It is estimated that, with the current increasing speed of CO emissions in Xi'an, the total CO emissions from electric motors, buses, and cars in major cities of China and India will be increased from 135 × 10 t in 2012 to 961 × 10 t in 2030, accounting for 0.37 to 2.67 % of the total global CO emissions of 2013, which is significant for global climate change. Secondly, households and individuals in the outer areas of both cities produce higher emissions than those in the inner areas. Thirdly, the lower emissions in Xi'an are due to the higher density and more compact urban pattern, shorter commuting distances, higher transit shares, and more clean energy vehicles. The more dispersed and extensive urban sprawl and the prevalence of two-wheeler motorbikes (two-wheeler motorbike is abbreviated as 'two-wheeler' in the following sections) fueled by gasoline cause higher emissions in Bangalore. Fourthly, car availability, higher household income, living outside the 2nd or Outer Ring Road, distance from the bus stop, and working in the foreign companies in Bangalore are significant and positive factors of commuting CO emissions. Fifthly, '70-20' and '50-20' (this means that generally, 20 % of commuters and households produce 70 % of total emissions in Xi'an and 20 % of commuters and households produce 50 % of total emissions in Bangalore) emission patterns exist in Xi'an and Bangalore, respectively. Several strategies have been proposed to reduce urban CO emissions produced by commuters and further to mitigate global climate change. Firstly, in the early stage of fast urbanization, enough monetary and land investment should be ensured to develop rail transit or rapid bus routes from outer areas to inner areas in the cities to avoid high dependency on cars, thus to implement the transit-oriented development (TOD), which is the key for Chinese and Indian cities to mitigate the impact on global climate change caused by CO emissions. Secondly, in Bangalore, it is necessary to improve public transit service and increase the bus stop coverage combined with car demand controls along the ring roads, in the outer areas, and in the industry areas where Indian foreign companies and the governments are located. The paper brings out the results of a bibliometric study of research output of eight universities of Punjab namely Panjab University (PU), Punjabi University (PBU), Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Punjab Agriculture University (PAU), Thapar University, IKG Punjab Technical University, Central University Bhatinda, and Lovely professional university in sciences. The analysis has been made for the two periods of time i.e. 1991-2002 and 2003-2014 for each university. The research activity of each university has been determined in terms of total publications, year wise distribution of papers, citations, authorship pattern, impact factor, h-index, collaborations within institute and foreign etc. The progress of each university has been compared between the periods of two decades and accordingly the ranking to the universities has been given both in terms of publication number and also in terms of total citations. In terms of h-index of each university, PU, GNDU and PAU were first second and third for the period 1991-2002 but for the period 2003-2014, PBU ranks third after PU and GNDU. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study is a scientometric analysis of research publications on Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) by Indian authors appearing in the Science Citation Index-Expanded during 1991-2014. The research output is analyzed on several parameters including total research output, its growth, rank and global publication share, activity index, relative citation impact, impact factor. It also presents the characteristics of most productive institutions, authors and high-cited papers. In the field of ANNs research, the top most prolific publishing countries are China and USA respectively. India is at 3rd position in the world with 3411 papers contributed by 5654 authors affiliated to 1025 institutions of India. The activity index suggests that India's research activity has improved greatly since 2008 onwards. Highest number of papers are contributed by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur and all the prominent IITs are the major contributors to the research on ANNs in India. Indian authors preferred to publish in journals originated from USA, United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Germany. Citation analysis for Indian publications gives 8.98 citations per paper. An attempt to analyse the pattern of organic chemistry papers in national and international journals was made in this article. We have reviewed the papers published in various subject areas and presented our findings. There is a growing interest in publishing papers in heterocyclic compared to other areas. There is a need for publishing more review papers in fundamental areas in the frontier research segment particularly to benefit the university teachers. We also have analysed the trend of the researchers and their papers. It was found that there is more enthusiasm to publish papers in higher ranking international journals than the premier journals like IJC(B). The neglect of national journals would hurt the research in the country. Effective uses of new synthetic methodologies involving metal catalysed reactions are found in international publications. Impact Factor (IF) is a popular bibliometircs and scientometrics tool for assessing the performance of scholarly journals. But there are many national journals from developing and under developing countries which are not indexed by SCI and are without IF. National journals play a vital role for a country. It is suggested that the performance of a journal cannot be measured by a single indicator. Diffusion of information is a basic notion of publications and citations. So diffusion study has been used to measure the influence of a journal. In this study two Indian non-SCI medical journals, viz., Indian Journal of Cancer and Journal of Communicable Diseases were selected for diffusion measure. New JDF and equivalent IF is calculated using citations data. Data is collected from Elsevier's SCOPUS database for the period of 2001-2010. It is found that there is improvement in Diffusion factors for both journals, but there is significant rise for Indian Journal of Cancer. As Journal of Communicable Disease is cited by more number of countries than Indian Journal of Cancer, so the former is more international in nature. Generally they have published papers mostly from India, but number of foreign authored papers has been increased in IJC. Open access of IJC may be one of the factors for better performance. In this study, the publications of Odisha are collected from ISI Web of Science and quantitatively analysed. Total 14,899 items were retrieved for the period 1967-2011, and there was no publications available from 1945-1966. From 1972, the publications grow steadily up to 1982 but after that the growth is irregular, then rapidly growth is notices from 2006 onwards. Authors of State have collaborated with most of the developed countries of the world. It is a good sign that the publications of new institutes are increasing but publications of old colleges have decreased. The authors have published some of their publications in high impact journals. Indian researchers have published more than 43,400 papers in over 4,600 journals in 2009 as seen from Science Citation Index (SCI) - Expanded. Of these, over 6,900 (or one in six) papers were published in 445 open access (OA) journals. The proportion of papers published by Indian researchers in OA journals is considerably higher than the world average, which is estimated to be 8.5-10.0%. Although India publishes well over a thousand journals, including about 360 OA journals, SCI Expanded indexed in 2009 only 101 Indian S&T journals including 46 OA journals. It is likely that the percentage of Indian papers in OA journals as seen from SCI will be higher if more Indian journals are indexed in SCI Expanded. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Most of the papers published in the more than 360 Indian open access journals are by Indian researchers. But how many papers do they publish in high impact international open access journals? We have looked at India's contribution to all seven Public Library of Science (PLoS) journals, 10 BioMed Central (BMC) journals and Acta Crystallographica Section E: Structure Reports. Indian crystallographers have published more than 2,000 structure reports in Acta Crystallographica, second only to China in number of papers, but have a much better citations per paper average than USA, Britain, Germany and France, China and South Korea. India's contribution to BMC and PLoS journals, on the other hand, is modest at best. We suggest that the better option for India is institutional self-archiving. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research papers published by Chinese and Indian researchers during 1998-2007 and cited at least 100 times by end of 2009 are analysed. There were 776 papers with at least one author from India (amounting to 0.32% of all papers from India) and 2260 papers with at least one author from China (0.4% of all papers from China) that have gone on to be cited at least 100 times. We have identified prominent authors and institutions, journals used and fields of research. Although highly cited Chinese papers were cited on average less often than the highly cited papers from India, Chinese authors have been able to place their papers in high impact journals such as Nature and Science far more often than Indian authors. The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai and Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore are the prominent Indian institutions, whereas universities in Hong Kong, Peking University, Tshing Hua University and several institutions under the Chinese Academy of Science dominate in China. Abstract: The structure and infrastructure of the Indian research literature were determined. A representative database of technical articles was extracted from the Science Citation Index/Social Science Citation Index (SCI/SSCI) [SCI. Document clustering was used to identify the main technical themes (core competencies) of Indian research. Aggregate India bibliometrics were also performed, emphasizing the value of collaborative research to India. A unique mapping approach was used to identify networks of organizations that published together, networks of organizations with common technical interests, and especially those organizations with common technical interests that did not co-publish extensively. Finally, trend analyses were performed using other year data from the SCI/SSCI to place the 2005 results in their proper historical context. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Background: Citations are an important measure of the quality and content of scientific communications. Since no study regarding the most cited articles in surgical literature from India exists, this article aims to identify these top cited articles. Materials and Methods: The 100 most frequently cited articles in surgery that originated from India were identified using the database of Scopus using a three pronged search. Results: The top 100 most cited articles were tabulated in descending order as Table 1. The most cited article received 196 citations, whereas the 100th received 20. The majority of the articles were published in the decade 1991 to 2000, with 39 institutions authoring these 'landmark' articles. Conclusions: When compared to other published 'citation classics', the Indian scenario has lot of scope for improvement.
