Hanging is one of the most common methods of suicide in India in which death of the individual occurs almost immediately. It is a widely practiced suicidal method in all cultures and has a very effective killing potential with a mortality of 80 percent. Death in hanging occurs immediately, however, a few cases have been reported in literature in which death has occurred after a certain period of time or the patient has survived after prolonged resuscitative measures. We report those cases of delayed death in hanging, for its rarity, for the discussion of the possible delayed causes of death in case of hanging and to emphasize the complications associated with delayed hanging. Present study is conducted on all cases of hanging deaths brought to mortuary of RRMC & hospital, Bangalore for postmortem examination from Jan 2013 to June 2013. Aim: The objective of this study was to describe the demographic characteristics of a case series of patients with a clinical and histopathological diagnosis of oral lichen planus who presented to the Oral Health Unit (Auckland District Health Board) between the years 1999 and 2006 (an 8-year period). Method: The records of patients who had a clinical and histopathological diagnosis of oral lichen planus were audited. Demographic (age, gender, ethnicity), clinical and histopathological data were collated. Patients whose ethnicity was not recorded were noted but not included in this part of the analysis. Results: Between 1999 and 2006, 267 patients (82 males, 185 females; age range 21 to 93 years) had a clinical and histopathological diagnosis of oral lichen planus. Ethnicity data were available for 207 of those, of whom 108 (52.2%) were European; 65 (31 .4%) of Indian subcontinent origin (India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka); 20 (9.7%) were Asian; 14 (6.8%) were Pacific Islanders; 50 (24.2%) were 'Other'; and 10 (4.8%) were 'Unknown'. None was Maori. Conclusion: The age and gender distribution in this case series were similar to that observed in a comparable UK study. The major findings were in the ethnic distribution of oral lichen planus in the sample, with patients of Indian subcontinent origin being over-represented, and Mąori being under-represented. Background: Lack of reliable data in India drove the "Surveillance of Enteric Fever in India" (SEFI) concept. Hybrid surveillance, combining facility-based surveillance for the crude incidence, and a community-based healthcare utilization survey (HCUS) to calculate the factor needed to arrive at the adjusted incidence, was used in 6 sites. The HCUS aimed to determine the percentage of utilization of study facilities by the catchment population for hospitalizations due to febrile illness., Methods: Population proportional to size sampling and systematic random sampling, in 2 stages, were used to survey 5000 households per site. Healthcare utilization was assessed., Results: Febrile illness accounted for 20% of admissions among 137 990 individuals from 30 308 households. Only 9.6%-38.3% of those admitted with febrile illness sought care in the study hospitals. The rate of rural utilization of the private sector for hospitalization was 67.6%. The rate of hospitalization for febrile illness, per 1000 population, ranged from 2.6 in Manali to 9.6 in Anantapur; for 25.8% of the deaths associated with febrile illness, no facility was used before death., Conclusions: One in 5 hospitalizations were associated with fever. Rural utilization of the private sector for hospitalization due to febrile illness was more than that of the public sector. Healthcare utilization patterns for hospital admissions due to febrile illness varied across sites. Epidemiological studies were conducted on Fasciola giagntica infection in different geo-climatic zones (hills, tarai and plains) in six states of north India during January 2001 to December 2004. Prevalence rates of 10.79, 13.90, 2.78 and 2.35 percent were recorded in cattle, buffaloes, sheep and goats, respectively. Animals in the tarai had the highest prevalence of fasciolosis followed by those in the hills and plains, respectively. The prevalence of infection in cattle and buffaloes was highest during the winters (11.84% cattle, 15.57% buffaloes) followed by summers and rains, respectively. However, the seasonal trends in sheep and goats were the reverse, with the peak prevalence during the rains (4.60% sheep, 2.71% goats). Abattoir studies revealed a higher prevalence in buffaloes (31.14%) than in sheep and goats. Screening of Lymnaea auricularia snails revealed that 5.48% of the snails harboured larval stages of F. gigantica. Also, the snails in the tarai had a higher prevalence (7.28%) of infection compared to those in the plains (1.57%). The results of the present study may help to devise an effective control strategy against fasciolosis in north India.

The association of tuberculosis and malignancy was studied at an oncology centre in Bangalore. The study period was from January 1981 to December 1995. A total of 8779 clinical material obtained from patients were screened for Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. Out of which 675 were positive for acidfast bacilli, 385 from non malignant conditions and 290 from malignant conditions. Highest incidence is seen in Head and Neck cancer (42%) followed by Gastrointestinal cancer (14.1%), Lung cancer (13.8%), Haematological cancer (10.7%), Reproductive cancer (10.3%) and miscellaneous group (9%), Antibiogram of Mycobacterial cultures was done in 282 subjects. Resistance patterns to antitubercular drugs showed highest with Isonicotinic acid hydrochloride (INH) (17.7%), followed by para amino salicylic acid (PAS) (8.5%), Streptomycin (SM) (6.7%), Rifampicin (RIF) (4.6%) and Ethambutol (EM) (0.35%).
