ABSTRACT: Background: Vaccine hesitancy has been inching up and its root cause lies in the factors that influence the vaccination. The present study was conducted to find out the proportion and factors contributing to vaccine hesitancy for routine childhood vaccinations in the slum population. Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was carried out among 210 children between the age group of 0 and 59 months residing in the urban slums of Ranchi in 2021. Data were collected during the household visit by interviewing the parents using a predesigned pretested interview schedule which was developed based on the validated version of the vaccine hesitancy survey questionnaire originally developed by the World Health Organization Strategic Advisory Group of Experts' working group on vaccine hesitancy. Associations between variables were analyzed using logistic regression. Results: A total of 210 children whose parents had given consent were included in our study. The majority of the families, 188 (89.5%), were not hesitant while only 22 (10.5%) were vaccine hesitant. Tribal children and unreserved category children had adjusted odds ratio of 4.41 (95% CI, 1.61–45.46) and 7.75 (95% CI, 1.07–56.08) for the delay as against their reference category. Conclusions: Most of the children were vaccinated in our study area and the families have shown confidence in vaccines. Although there were delays in vaccination and the reasons for the delays must be addressed to prevent these vaccine-hesitant populations from turning into vaccine-refusal population. Uniformity in vaccination days in different health facilities in slum areas, appropriate antenatal information, and counseling regarding childhood vaccinations, widespread awareness, and improving mother's education can help address the issue of vaccine hesitancy. Introduction: Iron acts as a cofactor in Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) activity, and low iron levels can impact thyroid hormone metabolism. The function of ferritin and iron has been extensively documented in various studies in patients with Overt Hypothyroidism (OH), but their role in Subclinical Hypothyroidism (SH) remains largely unexplored. Aim: To evaluate the serum ferritin and iron levels in patients who have SH. Materials and Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted between March 2018 and October 2018 at the Biochemistry Department of Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad, Telangana, India. For the study, a total of 100 cases of SH were enrolled, and these patients were matched in terms of age and sex with 50 healthy controls. A fasting sample was obtained and analysed for serum ferritin, Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC), TT3, TT4, and Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH). MedCalc software was used to perform statistical analysis. Results: In the SH group, there were 32 males (32%) and 68 females (68%); in the control group, there were 21 males (42%) and 29 females (58%). The median values of TT3 (nmol/L), TT4 (µg/dL), and TSH (µIU/mL) were 1.55 (1.4-1.95), 7.8 (5.9-9.75), and 3 (1.9-3.75) for controls, and 1.4 (1.1-1.75), 6.85 (5.5-8.15), and 6.2 (4.8-8.05), respectively, for cases. In comparison to controls, the TSH level was significantly higher (p<0.0001) in cases. The median iron (µg/dL), ferritin (ng/mL), TIBC (µg/dL), and % saturation in cases were 56.5 (41.5-82), 110 (31.5-194.5), 329 (258-390), and 19 (11.25-26.75), respectively, while in controls they were 84 (68.5-96.5), 195 (121.5-338.5), 233 (188.5-294), and 25 (18-37.5). There was a significant decrease in iron level (p<0.00001), % saturation (<0.00001), and ferritin level (p<0.00001), and a significant increase in TIBC (p<0.0001) in cases when compared to controls. Conclusion: In conclusion, the present study showed a significant negative correlation between SH and iron deficiency. Patients with this condition should be evaluated for ferritin and iron levels and treated appropriately to prevent hypothyroidism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Forests are the renewable resources, which are under continuous threat due to various anthropogenic interferences. The present paper discusses the risk caused due to the residual forest patches of eastern ghats of Andhra Pradesh, India, and the actions to be taken to protect them before they go into the phase of extinction. The paper focuses mainly on the significance of Kondapalli reserved forest of eastern ghats and on the role of anthropogenic factors in modifying the structure of these forests and on the possible causative and underlying factors that drive such changes. Though Kondapalli forest was declared as reserve forest, it is subjected to human disturbances, threatening the biodiversity and its population. The establishment of industries near to this forest and easy movement of people into the forest have caused a lot of damage to the vegetation. Encroachment, indiscriminate cutting of trees and haphazard grazing in forest areas have resulted in vast stretches of useless degraded scrub, eroded soils and bare hills. In this context, there is a need to analyze the current status of these forests and suggest measures to retain the remnant forests and recover wherever possible, thus providing various types of resources and for becoming a repository for biodiversity of the area. Heavy metal pollution and its impact on the distribution and periodicity of phytoplankton in the river Moosi has been investigated continuously for a year at two highly polluted sites. The metals are in the order of Fe > Zn > Pb > Mn > Co > Cu > Ni and the different groups of algae are in the sequence of—Chlorophyceae > Bacillariophyceae > Cyanophyceae > Euglenophyceae. Green algae are more tolerant to the metals. Certain planktonic species serve as indicators of heavy metal pollution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Coal mining activities in the North Karanpura basin have significantly increased the trace element (TE) concentrations in the soil, resulting in soil pollution and potential health risks. To assess this, 113 soil samples, along with coal, shale, and overburden rocks, were collected from open-cast mining areas during pre-monsoon (Pre-M) and post-monsoon (Post-M) seasons. Seasonal analysis revealed higher TE concentrations in the Post-M period, especially in the SE direction, followed by NE and NW, likely due to surface runoff and deposition, demonstrating temporal variability in TE distribution which corroborated from the spatial distribution maps. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) model identified four factors: mixed sources (F1 Pre-M : 37.6 %; F4 Post-M : 28.9 %), coal-fired emissions (F2 Pre-M : 20.5 %; F3 Post-M : 26.0 %), overburden rocks (F3 Pre-M : 25.5 %; F2 Post-M : 16.7 %), and agricultural and lithogenic origin (F4 Pre-M : 16.4 %) during the Pre-M period, attributed to coal mining. Post-M sources were similar, but agricultural and lithogenic origins were replaced by atmospheric deposition (F1 Post-M : 28.4 %), enhanced by monsoon effects. Carcinogenic risk assessment revealed that As, Cr, and Ni exceeded acceptable levels for children via ingestion, though adults remained within safe limits. Inhalation and dermal contact were also considered, but ingestion posed the highest risk. The hazard index (HI) via ingestion showed that children had an HI of 1.6 in Pre-M, increasing to 2.66 in Post-M, highlighting their potential vulnerability to non-carcinogenic risks, while adults stayed within safe limits. The expansion of mining areas in the study region led to decrease in vegetative areas which could affect agriculture and local communities, raising a comprehensive environmental and public health issues. Second-generation bioenergy, a carbon neutral or negative renewable resource, is crucial to achieving India's net-zero emission targets. Crop residues are being targeted as a bioenergy resource as they are otherwise burned on-field, leading to significant pollutant emissions. But estimating their bioenergy potential is problematic because of broad assumptions about their surplus fractions. Here, we use comprehensive surveys and multivariate regression models to estimate the bioenergy potential of surplus crop residues in India. These are with high sub-national and crop disaggregation that can facilitate the development of efficient supply chain mechanisms for its widespread usage. The estimated potential for 2019 of 1313 PJ can increase the present bioenergy installed capacity by 82% but is likely insufficient alone to meet India's bioenergy targets. The present study has been carried out to assess the quality of groundwater and surface water resources of Thettiyar watershed, Kerala, India. Sixty-six water samples were collected during pre-monsoon (April, 2019) and monsoon (July, 2019) season, and analyzed for pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), total hardness and major cations and anions and microbiological parameters as well. According to the piper diagram's plot, Ca and Mg dominate over Na among the cations, and Cl is the most prevalent anion in groundwater throughout both the studied seasons. The hydrochemical analysis of water samples revealed that all the parameters are within the permissible limit except for pH. For microbiological analysis, the samples were tested for total coliform and fecal coliform. Most of the groundwater samples collected have higher total coliform and fecal coliform (E. coli) content than the recommended count by BIS (2012). The pre-monsoon surface water samples owned a maximum number of 3700 cfu/100 ml (TNTC-too numerous to count) of total coliform and 1400 cfu/100 ml (TNTC) of fecal coliform. In monsoon, the number of total coliform and fecal coliform has increased to 3800 cfu/100 ml and 1900 cfu/100 ml respectively. E. coli and total coliform are effectively correlated with each other in both seasons, in accordance with the statistical study. Domestic, sewage dump, and other household wastes are the main sources of bacterial contamination in the study area, which in turn nourishes contaminant organisms. According to the results, the government or municipality should implement an appropriate system for managing solid waste and should take all necessary measures to clean up the study area., (© 2023. Background: Breast and cervical cancers are the two leading causes of cancer-specific mortality and morbidity amongst Indian women. Screening methods are cost-effective. However, the uptake of screening methods in India is very low. Knowledge and attitude of healthcare professionals (HCPs) play an important role in reducing the mortality related to cancer., Materials and Methods: This study aimed to assess the knowledge and utilisation of screening methods for cervical and breast cancer and to elaborate barriers for non-utilisation amongst female HCPs, both doctors and nurses. A cross-sectional study was carried out from April to July 2017 in a tertiary healthcare hospital of eastern India amongst 200 female HCPs using a pre-designed, pre-tested, self-administered questionnaire. Data were analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 20.0. Statistical tests such as proportion and mean were calculated and the Chi-square test was used as a test of significance for categorical variables., Results: Clinical breast examination and mammography were practiced by only 26.5% and 7% of respondents, respectively. Only seven doctors and one nurse had ever undergone Pap smear. More than 90% of respondents knew risk factors, signs and symptoms and the availability of screening tools for the detection of cervical and breast carcinoma., Conclusions: The utilisation of breast and cervical cancer screening was unsatisfactory despite having good knowledge of the preventable cancers and screening methods amongst HCPs. Background: Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) may be a risk factor for poorly controlled asthma in children. The studies regarding prevalence and risk factors of ABPA in children with poorly controlled asthma are limited in number., Objectives: To determine prevalence and risk factors of ABPA and aspergillus sensitization (AS) in children with poorly controlled asthma., Methods: In this prospective cross-sectional study from a tertiary care center in India, we enrolled asthmatic children 5-15 years of age with poorly controlled asthma. We did the following investigations: spirometry, skin prick test, serum total immunoglobulin E (IgE), aspergillus-specific IgE and immunoglobulin G, serum precipitin for Aspergillus, absolute eosinophil count, chest X-ray and high-resolution computed tomography of the chest. ABPA and AS were diagnosed as per the recently proposed criteria., Results: We enrolled 106 children [boys 72 (67.9%); mean age of 10.2 ± 2.6 years] with poorly controlled asthma. The prevalence of ABPA and AS were 11.3% (95% CI, 5.2-17.5%) and 61.3% (95% CI, 52.0-70.7%), respectively. The presence of brownish sputum was significantly more in ABPA compared with non-ABPA patients (33.3 vs. 4.2%, p = 0.002). The age, gender, allergic rhinitis and gastroesophageal reflux were not significantly different in ABPA compared with non-ABPA patients., Conclusion: The prevalence of ABPA and AS was 11.3 and 61.3%, respectively in children with poorly controlled asthma. We could not find any risk factors for ABPA except that the presence of brownish sputum was more in children with ABPA. Because of the excellent ability of α-particles to transfer a high amount of energy over a short tissue range, targeted α-therapy has been attracting rising numbers of nuclear medicine centers. In this study, we estimated the radiation exposure to the occupational workers with pocket dosimeters during handling of the α-emitter 213 Bi, used for targeted α-therapy of neuroendocrine tumor and castration-resistant prostate cancer patients. The dose rates from patients at different distances and time points after injection of the therapy were also evaluated. Methods: This prospective study was done in the Department of Nuclear Medicine at Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurgaon, India. Twelve patients with neuroendocrine tumors or castration-resistant prostate cancer were enrolled to receive 213 Bi-DOTATOC or 213 Bi-prostate-specific membrane antigen therapy, respectively. Each patient received 2-3 intravenous injections of 213 Bi-peptide, 266-362 MBq (7.2-9.8 mCi) in a single cycle over 2-3 d. The radiation exposure to nuclear medicine personnel at the chest and extremity levels was assessed for tasks such as elution, dispensing, injecting, and collecting blood samples. Radiation levels were measured at distances of 1 cm and 1 m from patients immediately after, and at 1, 2, and 4 h after, the administration of 213 Bi-peptide. Results: The external dose incurred at the chest level by radiopharmacists during synthesis, by physicians during injection, by technologists during imaging, and by nurses during sample collection was 2-7 μSv/procedure. The extremity dose was 1-14 μSv/procedure. The dose rate at 1 m from patients immediately after 213 Bi-radiopharmaceutical injection was 0.02-0.03 μSv/MBq⋅h. Leaf rust (Puccinia triticina Eriks.) is a fungal disease of wheat (Triticum spp.), which causes considerable yield loss. Adult plant resistance (APR) is one of the most sustainable approaches to control leaf rust. In this study, field-testing was carried out across ten different locations, followed by molecular screening, to detect the presence of APR genes, Lr34+, Lr46+, Lr67+ and Lr68 in Indian wheat germplasm. In field screening, 190 wheat accessions were selected from 6,319 accessions based on leaf tip necrosis (LTN), disease severity and the average coefficient of infection. Molecular screening revealed that 73% of the accessions possessed known APR genes either as single or as a combination of two or three genes. The occurrence of increased LTN intensity, decreased leaf rust severity and greater expression of APR genes were more in relatively cooler locations. In 52 lines, although the presence of the APR genes was not detected, it still displayed high levels of resistance. Furthermore, 49 accessions possessing either two or three APR genes were evaluated for stability across locations for grain yield. It emerged that eight accessions had wider adaptability. There is a persistent need to assess the effects of TiO2 nanoparticles on the aquatic ecosystem owing to their increasing usage in consumer products and risk of environmental release. The current study is focused on TiO2 nanoparticle-induced acute toxicity at sub-ppm level (≤1ppm) on the three different freshwater sediment bacterial isolates and their consortium under two different irradiation (visible light and dark) conditions. The consortium of the bacterial isolates was found to be less affected by the exposure to the nanoparticles compared to the individual cells. The oxidative stress contributed considerably towards the cytotoxicity under both light and dark conditions. A statistically significant increase in membrane permeability was noted under the dark conditions as compared to the light conditions. The optical and fluorescence microscopic images showed aggregation and chain formation of the bacterial cells, when exposed to the nanoparticles. The electron microscopic (SEM, TEM) observations suggested considerable damage of cells and bio-uptake of nanoparticles. The exopolysaccrides (EPS) production and biofilm formation were noted to increase in the presence of the nanoparticles, and expression of the key genes involved in biofilm formation was studied by RT-PCR., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Inc. Fluorescence in situ hybridization based physical localization of 45S ribosomal DNA in eight horticulturally important species of Cymbidium (Orchidaceae) from north-east India (South-East Asia) has been carried for the first time. Observations revealed only one pair of chromosomes had NOR loci. Three, out of eight Cymbidiums showed decondensed, dispersed, extended form of hybridization signals of rDNA as dots of fluorescence (transcriptionally active), where as the rest of the Cymbidiums revealed condensed (non-active) forms, hence demonstrated the heteromorphism in size, intensities and their appurtenance which may be under epigenetic control. Except for the ribosomal genes, no other active genes have been reported to reside within the nucleoli. Such observations provide useful chromosome landmarks and provide valuable evidence about the genome evolution, speciation and ploidy both at molecular and chromosomal levels which is more or less highly ambiguous in family Orchidaceae., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Femoral artery is frequently accessed by radiologists and surgeons. Anatomical knowledge of the variations of femoral artery and its branches including profunda femoris, medial and lateral femoral circumflex arteries is required to minimize complications and hence it is suggested for the clinicians planning surgery and intervention around the aforementioned vessels. Present study was undertaken on Indian population and dissection was performed on 64 extremities of 32 embalmed cadavers. The level of origin of the profunda femoris artery was studied in relation to the midpoint of the inguinal ligament. Prevalence of the mode and configurations of origins of the medial and lateral femoral circumflex arteries was observed. The median distance of separation of the profunda femoris artery from the femoral artery was 4.2 cm distal to the midpoint of the inguinal ligament. The medial femoral circumflex artery in 43 out of 64 (67.2%) extremities originated from the profunda femoris artery; whereas in 21 out of 64 (32.8%) extremities it originated from the femoral artery. On the other hand, the lateral femoral circumflex artery in 52 out of 64 (81.25%) extremities originated from the profunda femoris artery; whereas in 12 out of 64 (18.75%) extremities it originated from the femoral artery. We further suggest that origins of the medial and lateral femoral circumflex arteries directly from the femoral artery is associated with lower level of separation of the profunda femoral artery from the femoral artery.

Radial nerve innervation to the brachialis muscle has been studied previously by different authors in Caucasian, Chinese, and Thai population. Present study was aimed to describe the radial nerve and musculocutaneous nerve contribution to the brachialis muscle and to elucidate racial differences between Indian and other populations. Hundred-forty superior extremities of 70 embalmed cadavers including 29 female and 41 male cadavers were dissected to study the innervation of brachialis muscle by musculocutaneous nerve and branch from the radial nerve. All the specimens were studied for site of penetration, level of distribution and nature of course and pathway of the branch of the radial nerve to the brachialis muscle. The musculocutaneous nerve innervated the brachialis muscle in 100% specimens, whereas the radial nerve in 72.14% specimens. The radial nerve branch to brachialis pierced the muscle in the lower one third of the humerus in 65.71% specimens; on the other hand in the middle one third in 34.29% specimens. The radial nerve branch to brachialis in 50.71% specimens had relatively straighter course before penetration into the muscle, whereas in 49.29% specimens the nerve had relatively curved course and pathway. Aforementioned results regarding brachialis innervation by radial nerve in Indian population is different from studies reported in other populations. These anatomical facts are important for humeral surgery including both the anterior and posterior approaches especially for orthopedic interventions on the Indian population.

Short saphenous has most variable anatomy in the inferior extremity which become more relevant especially in varicose vein surgery. Present study on cadavers was undertaken to report the prevalence of the thigh extension of the short saphenous vein (Giacomini vein) in the Indian population and to discuss it with the prior studies reported in the literature on other populations. Dissection was performed on both the sides of 50 embalmed cadavers to study the prevalence of the Giacomini vein. Mode of termination of the proximal extension of the short saphenous vein in the thigh was studied for different criteria. Ninety-two percent of the lower extremities showed prevalence of the Giacomini vein. In 71% specimens the short saphenous vein terminated into the popliteal vein. Most common mode of extension in the thigh was anastomosis with the great saphenous vein. Prevalence of Giacomini vein in Indian population was highest (92%) compared to previous studies by various authors in other populations. Aforementioned anatomical facts including the mode of termination of the thigh extension of the short saphenous vein can be important for surgeons planning intervention in this area. The complex anatomy of this vein and different reports in the literature regarding its clinical significance suggest further studies in this direction.

We have previously reported natural infection of Hanuman langurs (Semnopithecus entellus) from Lucknow, India by a novel simian retrovirus, SRV-6, a beta-retrovirus (type D retrovirus). Here we describe infection by a closely related SRV-6 in an isolated feral population of Hanuman langurs from Jodhpur in the Northwestern desert region of India. Serological analyses, using in-house ELISA and WB, genomic amplification, and sequencing of env region (gp70 and gp20) of the viral genome were carried out. SRV-6-infected langurs from the two regions were serologically cross-reactive. The env gene was used for phylogenetic analyses, being the most variable part of a retroviral genome. The surface glycoproteins (gp70) were almost identical between the two SRV-6 isolates and related to but distinct from equivalent regions from other exogenous SRVs. We could sequence the transmembrane glycoprotein gp20 from SRV-6 infecting the Jodhpur langurs, which was again shown to be related to but unique compared to the other known SRVs. The study suggests that natural infection by related strains of SRV-6 occurs in wild langurs from different parts of India.

Distortions in mother-infant, mother-child and father-child segregation for the ABO system as well as in the sex of offspring are described in a sample from a maternity service and from families of Visakhapatnam, India. Some distortions follow the expected fetomaternal incompatibility depression, others the expected feto-maternal induction of tolerance, and some remain unexplained. A differential action of selective factors on male and female fetuses, infants and children was also found, but no hypothesis could be postulated to explain it. The mother-infant matrix was found to be different from the mother-child matrix probably due to the inclusion of the reproductive time only in the mother-infant matrix. Unexpectedly, father-child segregation distortions were also found.

During 1972-74 and 1977-78 data on sex composition of children were collected in the Visakhapatnam District of Andhra Pradesh, India. Significantly more parents ceased having children when the first few children were of different sexes. Among those families with children of the same sex, there were significantly more all-male children than all-female children. Positive correlations were observed between the sexes of successive births.

The relationship between maternal stature, number of conceptions, offspring mortality and number of surviving children was studied in 291 Jalari women. Maternal stature averaged 150.98 cm, maternal age 35 years, number of conceptions 5.1 and number of surviving children 4.2. Adjusting for age and number of conceptions, the relationship between maternal stature and surviving children is significantly negative. Shorter women show significantly higher number of conceptions and surviving children than taller women (P less than 0.05). Intensity of natural selection (I) is computed for height and weight.
