Background: Body mass index (BMI) is the most frequently used method to determine the nutritional status in adolescents. School-going population in developing countries like India are susceptible to undernutrition due to several socioeconomic, demographic, and nutritional factors. Poor dietary habits, sedentary lifestyles and improper hygiene can have a deleterious effect on their BMI. Methods: The aim of the study was to determine any association of BMI with physical health, nutrition, and personal hygiene among the school-going adolescents near Patna, Bihar. Analytical cross-sectional study was conducted among 160 school-going adolescents, chosen by stratified random sampling. They were given Indian Adolescent Health Questionnaire which had close-ended questions about physical activity, nutritional, and hygienic practices. BMI was calculated from self-reported height and weight. Pearson's correlation, independent t test, ANOVA, and Chi-Square test of proportions were done. Significance level was set at P < 0.05. Results: Only 39.4% adolescents had normal BMI, and almost half were underweight. Pearson's correlation of BMI with age showed a weak positive correlation (r = 0.124, P = 0.118). Participants perceiving themselves overweight, did physical exercise to lose weight (P < 0.001), whereas who stated that they rarely consumed cooked vegetables, had the self-perception of being underweight (P = 0.009). This self-perception of their weight, physical activity, handwashing after using toilet/latrine and weekly frequency of brushing teeth significantly predicted the BMI in these adolescents (F = 10.895, df (4,155), P < 0.001, R2 = 21.9%, Adj. R2 = 19.9%). Conclusion: Malnutrition can lead to infection, impaired reproductive health, anaemia and other long-term morbidities into adulthood. Background: Workplace hygiene is vital in controlling infectious diseases in industries. The factors like unhealthy environment, unhygienic workplace, and contact between healthy and disease-affected employees cause industrial hazards in workplaces. Objectives: This study assessed various components of workplace hygiene among industrial workers. Materials and Methods: A quantitative survey has been conducted in a steel, and power industry limited in Odisha. The study surveyed 425 male contractual workers for primary data on workplace hygiene. Probability proportion to sample technique adopted for justification of the sample. The univariate and bivariate analysis models have been done according to the study's objective. Results: Nearly 92% of respondents reported proper use of washing facilities, and 97% used toilet and urinal appropriately. One-fourth of respondents use personal disinfected clothing, and 92.2% have access to safe drinking water. The factors such as education, technical education, and occupation are significantly associated with respondents' use of washing facilities, dining hall, personal protective clothing, safe drinking water, proper cleaning, and sanitation at the workplace. Background: Children who possess a good knowledge and practice of personal hygiene measures such as hand washing have lower incidence of communicable diseases. This study was done to assess the status of personal hygiene and the morbidity pattern among the children of a government school. Material & Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted among 3rd and 6th standard students of a government school situated at Liluah, Howrah district of West Bengal, India over a period of 2 weeks in August, 2017 with the help of a questionnaire. Results of the study were analysed with relevant statistical methods. Results: The importance of hand washing with soap after defecation and before meals was known to 100% and 98% students respectively, however was practised by 98% and 76% students respectively. There is significant association between knowledge and practice of hand washing with soap after meals (P value 0.04146). Brushing teeth, washing feet and taking daily bath (80.77%) are the most common practices. Most common morbidities were fever with cough (17.3%), worm infestation (13.5%) and dental caries. Conclusion: Personal hygiene practices like hand washing, trimming nails regularly, etc can reduce the incidence of many preventable diseases among children, leading them to a healthy life. Context: In India, children of upper primary school receive less attention from health-care providers. The majority of their health problems are preventable through hygienic practices. Aims: The aim of this study was to find out the association of personal hygiene with common morbidities among upper primary school children. Settings and Design: A cross-sectional study conducted in a rural upper primary school of Odisha. Subjects and Methods: A semi-structured schedule based on the Global School Health Survey Questionnaire and necessary instruments for clinical examination were used. Statistical Analysis Used: Data were entered in Microsoft Excel 2007 and analyzed by SPSS version 20 software. Results: Of 90 participants, 58 (64.4%) were girls. The mean age was 11.8 (±1.01) years. The mean body mass index of females was significantly higher than males (16.95 vs. 14.72; P = 0.001). More than 90% of children maintained good personal hygiene such as clean tongue, clean hair, handwashing, and using footwear. The most common morbidities found were dental caries (38.9%), history of worms in stool and lethargy (20%). A mean score of 6.14 ± 0.11 (out of 8) was seen for personal hygiene and not associated with any particular morbidity or gender. Brushing daily was significantly associated with reduced dental caries (χ² = 8.7; P < 0.005) and foul-smelling breath (χ² = 4.93; P < 0.05). Fungal infections were significantly less in children who bathed daily (χ² = 28.7; <0.005) and wore clean clothes (χ² = 5.06; P < 0.05). Conclusion: Dental caries, foul-smelling breath, and fungal infections were significantly associated with poor personal hygiene. Tooth cleaning frequency in relation to socio-demographic variables and personal hygiene measures among school children of Udaipur district, India. The aim of the study was to determine if frequency of tooth cleaning varies with social group, family size, bedtime and other personal hygiene habits among school children. Target population comprised schoolchildren aged 8-16 years of Udaipur district attending public schools. A two stage cluster random sampling procedure was executed to collect the representative sample, consequently final sample size accounted to 852 children. Data were collected by means of structured questionnaires which consisted of questions related to oral hygiene habits including a few general hygiene habits, bed time, family size, family income and dental visiting habits. The results show that 30.5% of the total sample cleaned their teeth twice or more daily and there was no significant difference between the genders for tooth cleaning frequency. Logistic regression analysis revealed that older children and those having less than two siblings were more likely to clean their teeth twice a day than the younger ones and children with more than two siblings. Furthermore, frequency of tooth cleaning was significantly lower among children of parents with low level of education and less annual income as compared with those of high education and more annual income. In addition, tooth cleaning habits were more regular in children using tooth paste and regularly visiting to the dentist. Background: Majority of the health problems affecting school children are preventable by promotion of hygienic practices through proper health education by the teachers, who are the first contacts. Objectives: The study was undertaken to find out the status of nutrition and personal hygiene among primary school children and their association with their varied morbidity profiles. Materials and Methods: A descriptive, observational, cross-sectional study was conducted in a primary school situated in the largest slum of Kolkata. Results: The participants included 103 boys and 81 girls, with a mean age of 6.2 years. The mean personal hygiene score of the girls (4.15 ± 0.98) was significantly higher than that of boys (3.2 ± 1.4) [P<0.05]. Most of the boys (54.37%) and girls (74.07%) were normally nourished as per the CDC growth chart. Over 70% of the children were suffering from one or more morbidities, the most common morbidity in both the sexes being pallor, followed by worm infestation. Personal hygiene scores were significantly higher (P<0.05) among those children who were normally nourished as well as those who did not suffer from any morbidity in the last 15 days. Conclusions: Care should be taken to improve the pitiable state of personal hygiene and poor sanitary practices of these school children through coordinated and concerted health education measures by teachers as well as parents.
